Newsbreakers
November 20, 2008
There is a rumor circulating that Tim Wakefield may be considering retirement because his shoulder has reportedly been bothering him, according to TheBottomLine.com. This is the same injury that forced the knuckleballer to miss the 2007 postseason.

Our View:The 42-year-old recently had his 2009 option for $4 million exercised. The Red Sox are currently targeting AJ Burnett and Derek Lowe, and the club would still be in great shape with either hurler if Wakefield decides to hang up his cleats.
October 31, 2008
As expected, the Red Sox have exercised Tim Wakefield's 2009 option for $4 million, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:The 42-year-old ranked second on Boston's staff and third in the AL with a .228 opponents batting average against. He comes at a bargain for next season, as he threw 181 innings in 2008, while maintaining a solid 1.18 WHIP.
October 22, 2008
The Red Sox will "almost certainly" pick up Tim Wakefield's 2009 option for $4 million, according to the Boston Herald.

Our View:He is 42, but will come at a bargain for next season, as he racks up a lot of innings, and held a 1.18 WHIP over 30 starts in 2008.
October 14, 2008
Tim Wakefield 's knuckleball wasn't fluttering Tuesday, as he allowed five runs on six hits and two walks in just 2 2/3 innings. He was removed in favor of Justin Masterson.

Our View:Needless to say, this was not the performance the Sox were hoping for. Their bats will need to rally if they want to avoid falling into a 3-1 hole in the series.
September 28, 2008
Tim Wakefield threw five shutout innings against the Yankees in Boston's final game of the season on Sunday. He allowed just two hits and struck out three.

Our View:With the news of Josh Beckett's injury, Wakefield may now go in Game 3 of the NLDS. He has been as inconsistent as any pitcher in September.
