Our View:The team has been for sale because current Padres owner John Moores and his wife are in the midst of a divorce.
December 24, 2008 Brian Giles has come out to say that his ex-girlfriend's lawsuit is all about money, according to ESPN. "The marriage never took place because the plaintiff changed her mind about a prenuptial agreement," Giles said. "The statement that I promised before marriage to divide my property to plaintiff if we ever separated or died is nonsense."
Our View:It's hard to tell who's telling the truth at this point, but Giles' explanation seems plausible.
December 17, 2008 Padres outfielder Brian Giles was sued by his ex-girlfriend for more than $10 million, as she alleges that he hit, slapped, shook and kicked her while she was pregnant, leading to a miscarriage, according to Padres.com.
Our View:We certainly hope this is not true. Giles will not comment on the suit.
November 19, 2008 Brian Giles expects to begin the 2009 campaign with the Padres, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Giles said, "I don't see how that would be a thought for them, to pick up my option and try to trade me before spring training. I think they picked up my option to be one of the pieces to try to win here. I don't think they picked up my option to try to trade me. I'm going to play here."
Our View:Giles has the power to veto any trade. Giles' power may be on the decline, but he still hit .306 with a .398 OBP in 2008 with 81 runs scored.
November 7, 2008 The Padres exercised Brian Giles's option for $9 million on Friday, according to the Padres' official site.
Our View:With a buyout of $3 million, this move makes a lot of sense. Even with Giles' power numbers down, the Padres are unlikely to get an outfielder with the same production for $6 million, the difference between his buyout and option.
