Newsbreakers
August 22, 2008
It was yet another shellacking for Livan Hernandez to endure in Colorado, as he picked up his second loss and again gave up six earned runs in 3.2 innings as Colorado fell to the Reds 8-5.

Our View:This is getting painful to watch, as Hernandez has started three games for Colorado and has allowed nine, six and six earned runs, respectively, in his starts.
August 22, 2008
Livan Hernandez is 1-1 with a 15.58 ERA since arriving in Colorado. On the season he's allowed 216 hits and 108 runs in 148.1 innings of work. Hernandez is 2-6 with a 5.21 ERA in 12 career starts against the Reds, his Friday night opponent.

Our View:There will plenty of balls put in play tonight with Livan and the not-right Aaron Harang pitching. The Reds figure to break out of their RISP slump and the Roks shouldn't have trouble getting good swings off the injured Harang (neck and forearm).
August 10, 2008
It was not a good debut for Livan Hernandez in a Rockies uniform. He pitched just 2.2 innings, allowed seven hits and nine earned runs while walking four in his team's loss to the Padres.

Our View:Hernandez's NL ERA now stands at 30.37. Just say no to putting him on a fantasy team.
August 10, 2008
Livan Hernandez has been activated and will start Sunday's game against San Diego, according to the AP. Kip Wells has been designated for assignment to make room for Hernandez on the roster.

Our View:Hernandez, who was claimed off waivers from Minnesota on Wednesday, was 10-8 with the Twins before being designated for assignment on August 1. His record is solid, but his ERA (5.48) and WHIP (1.63) are poor. He has allowed 18 homers over 23 starts, which should not bode well while playing his home games at Coors Field.
August 8, 2008
Livan Hernandez will make his first start as a member of the Rockies organization on Sunday, according to MLB.com. Jorge De La Rosa will move to the bullpen to provide Livan a spot in the rotation.

Our View:Want to know the truth? De La Rosa and Hernandez are simply atrocious. There, we said it. If you are depending on either hurler, you are likely at the bottom of the standings in your league.
August 6, 2008
Confirming an earlier report, Livan Hernandez has indeed been claimed by the Rockies off waivers, according to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal. The Rockies will pay the approximately $1.6 million remaining on Hernandez's contract for the year, while the Twins, who designated Hernandez for assignment last week, are responsible for the incentives the pitcher has already earned this season. At least one other National League club also made a claim on Hernandez, but the Rockies were awarded the pitcher because they had the worst record of any of the claiming teams.

Our View:Hernandez is likely to take Jorge De La Rosa's spot in the rotation. Pitching at Coors Field negates any sort of uptick Livan receives in value by going back to the NL.
August 5, 2008
Updating an earlier story, Colorado general manager Dan O'Dowd would not confirm a report that the team had claimed starter Livan Hernandez on trade waivers Tuesday, according to the Associated Press. “I can’t comment on that,” O’Dowd said. “I will say we are looking for another starting pitcher.” A Denver Post report on its Website cited a major league source confirming the Rockies put in a claim for the Hernandez. The right-hander was put on waivers by the Minnesota Twins.

Our View:Why the Rockies feel the need to be coy is intriguing, though the waiver claim now opens the door for trade negotiations, and we can understand a desire to remain quiet while those take place. We'll keep you posted.
August 5, 2008
RHP Livan Hernandez , designated for assignment by the Twins, was claimed off waivers by the Rockies on Tuesday, according to FoxSports.com.

Our View:The Twins and Rockies now have 48 hours to work out a trade. If no agreement is reached, the Twins likely will let Hernandez go to the Rockies without receiving a player in return. It is unclear whether the Twins can pull back Hernandez after removing him from their 40-man roster. The Twins' priority is to escape the remaining obligation on Hernandez's contract — the balance of his $5 million salary, plus as much as $2 million in incentives. The defending NL champion Rockies need a pitching boost as they attempt to rally from an eight-game deficit in the NL West. They have been scrambling to fill the back of their rotation all season, and their 4.81 team ERA is third worst in the majors.
August 3, 2008
If RHP Livan Hernandez clears waivers, recently optioned for assignment by the Minnesota Twins, the Colorado Rockies are said to be waiting in the wings to bring him aboard, according to the Denver Post.

Our View:Manager Clint Hurdle planned to talk with general manager Dan O'Dowd about Hernandez after Saturday's game. The Twins designated the right- hander for assignment Friday, giving them 10 days to trade or release him. He must be placed on waivers during that time — meaning he won't clear until Tuesday at the earliest. He can be claimed by any team, though that's not a certainty given the roughly $1.7 million remaining on his salary.
August 1, 2008
Updating an earlier report, Livan Hernandez has indeed been designated for assignment to open up a roster spot for Francisco Liriano, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:Livan will certainly latch on with someone, but no matter where he ends up, his value will continue to be that of an injury replacement when the matchup is just right and nothing more.
August 1, 2008
Twins pitcher Livan Hernandez is likely to be designated for assignment as the club will call up Francisco Liriano to take his spot in the rotation, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Our View:Hernandez has not been good, and his 10 wins are an indicator of how overrated that statistic is in terms of evaluating pitchers. He has a 1.63 WHIP, a 5.48 ERA, and gives up nearly 13 hits per nine innings. He didn't have a whole lot of fantasy value before, and has even less now.
July 25, 2008
Livan Hernandez displayed his usual rubber arm, throwing 119 pitches in an eight inning complete game for the Twins. Hernandez picked up the loss however, as he allowed five runs on 12 hits.

Our View:Typical Hernandez. Despite his 10 wins, the other numbers he puts up are not worthy of fantasy baseball. He doesn't strike people out enough, and he gives up far too many hits.
July 19, 2008
Who needs Francisco Liriano? Livan Hernandez held the Rangers to two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out a pair over seven innings Saturday to pick up his 10th win of the season.

Our View:The 10 wins are nice, but there's no hiding the fact that Livan has been horrible this year, with a 5.29 ERA, 3.3 K/9 rate and 12.5 H/9 rate. We still expect Liriano to replace him in the rotation before long.
July 9, 2008
Livan Hernandez allowed six runs on eleven hits, walked none and struck out two in an 18-5 loss to the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday afternoon.

Our View:Hernandez was typical in the loss. The right-hander gave up 11 hits in 4.1 innings of work and with 173 hits in just over 100 innings, the right-handed veteran is on pace to allow 300 hits on the season.
July 4, 2008
Livan Hernandez gave up three earned runs on five hits over six innings in Friday's 12-3 win over the division rival Indians at home, with three walks and four strikeouts. He allowed two homers, one to Kelly Shoppach and the other to Ben Francisco.

Our View:Hernandez improves to 9-5, and is 3-1 over his last four starts.
June 28, 2008
Livan Hernandez lost for the first time in three starts as the Milwaukee Brewers beat Minnesota 5-1 on Saturday night to end the Twins' 10-game winning streak. Livan allowed four earned runs on five hits, walked four and struck out five in the loss.

Our View:The veteran fought through some early inning troubles to pitch seven innings, but did so by recording a season-high 115 pitches. Hernandez has allowed 157 hits in 110 innings this year.
June 28, 2008
The Twins will be sending veteran Livan Hernandez to the mound today to keep the good vibes going against the Milwaukee Brewers, according to the Sports Network.

Our View:The Twins have collected 10 consecutive wins and now sit just a half-game back of the AL Central leading Chicago White Sox. During this impressive stretch Minnesota swept National League opponents Washington, Arizona and San Diego, and are tied with the Kansas City Royals for the best record in interleague play this season at 13-3. Since going 0-3 over a span of six starts, Hernandez has won back-to-back starts, including a 5-3 decision over Arizona this past Sunday. The 33-year-old hurler is a perfect 6-0 in nine starts at home.
June 22, 2008
Livan Hernandez picked up his eighth win of the season on Sunday as he limited the young Diamondbacks to three runs, one earned, over seven innings.

Our View:After being beaten around like a pinata at a seven year olds birthday party over five starts, Livan has now turned in back-to-back seven innings outings with one earned run allowed. He is currently scheduled to take on the Brewers the next time out.
June 17, 2008
The Nationals and Twins fought through a pitcher's duel this evening, but in the end it was Minnesota pulling the 2-1 win, led by RHP Livan Hernandez . Hernandez pitched seven innings to allow just one run on five hits, giving up no walks but striking out just one.

Our View:This gives Hernandez a 5.51 ERA on the season, rebounding after consecutive losses and three failures in his last six outings before this evening.
June 12, 2008
Livan Hernandez was abysmal on Thursday allowing 12 hits and seven runs to the Indians in his fourth loss of the season.

Our View:If you had Livan in there today, you just haven't been paying attention as Livan has done his best pitching machine impersonation over his last five starts allowing at least five runs in each outing (good for a 11.10 ERA).
June 7, 2008
Livan Hernandez took another beating on Saturday as he allowed seven runs in four innings to fall to 6-3 with the loss to the White Sox.

Our View:This was the fourth straight outing that Livan permitted five or more runs as his ERA has balloned from 3.88 to 5.32 in that time. He will get his double-digit wins, but it's going to be a very bumpy ride.
May 22, 2008
Livan Hernandez allowed 10 hits and two walks to the Rangers, and though five of the six runs that scored were earned, he still managed to escape with a no decision.

Our View:Livan has a shining record at 6-2, but that's about all you have to look forward to here. More often than not he gives the Twins a chance to win, but with a K/9 below three and with a WHIP north of 1.40, he just isn't worth trotting out there in most mixed leagues.
May 17, 2008
Livan Hernandez retired the first 15 batters he faced before Jeff Baker hit a double to left leading off the sixth inning in Saturday night's loss to the Rockies. Hernandez allowed eight hits and three runs in 7.1 innings, and drove in a run with a bunt.

Our View:A very nice effort by Livan at Coors field on Saturday nigh, and he deserved better than a loss for his work.
May 12, 2008
Livan Hernandez will be shooting for his sixth win of the season tonight when the Twins host the Red Sox, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Hernandez is 5-1 with a 3.83 ERA and passable 1.39 WHIP over 51.2 innings, with 20 strikeouts. He has been lucky to have five wins over eight starts so far, as his numbers are merely average. He is not a solid starting fantasy pitcher despite his record, especially with low strikeout totals.
May 7, 2008
Livan Hernandez pitched a complete game on Wednesday night though he lost his shutout in the ninth inning against the White Sox. He allowed one walk and nine hits on the night to improve to 5-1.

Our View:Livan lowered his ERA to 3.66 with the outing. With only 20 K in 51.2 IP, Livan continues to defy the odds by having success despite some mediocre, at best, peripherals.
May 2, 2008
Livan Hernandez did something not too many pitchers have done recently by shutting down the Detroit offense. The veteran gave up just one run on eight hits to bounce back from a poor performance against Texas.

Our View:Hernandez struck out four and walked two lowering his ERA to 4.43 in the 11-1 win over the Tigers.
April 22, 2008
Livan Hernandez looks to remain unbeaten when he takes the hill against Oakland tonight, according to MLB.com. He is currently 3-0 with a 3.00 ERA over 27 innings, and is 2-2 with a 4.76 ERA over four career starts against the Athletics.

Our View:He will duel with Joe Blanton, who is 1-3 with a 4.24 ERA. He only has eight strikeouts so far, but Hernandez has a WHIP of 1.22 and should remain penciled into your lineups.
April 16, 2008
Livan Hernandez lasted eight innings on Wednesday night allowing five runs, three earned, to the Rays. Livan allowed eight hits and three BB, but the big news was that he allowed three home runs.

Our View:Hernandez ERA sits at 3.00 after four starts, so anyone who complains about this outing from Livan should have their head examined.
April 11, 2008
Livan Hernandez has turned back the clock as he continues a marvelous start to the '08 campaign as he picked up his third victory of the season for the Twins. Livan allowed only seven hits and one walk over seven scoreless innings, and he now boasts a 2.57 ERA and 1.05 WHIP thanks to only a single walk over 21 innings. It might be wise to explore trade opportunities quickly before things turn south with the portly hurler.
April 10, 2008
Thursday night's game between the Minnesota Twins and Chicago White Sox was postponed by rain. The game was been rescheduled for June 9 at 1:05 p.m. CDT. While rainouts are not usually considered beneficial for pitching rotations, the Twins might have caught a break with this cancellation. Due to Kevin Slowey's strained right biceps muscle and Francisco Liriano's struggles in two Minor League starts, the Twins saw the rain as an answer to their pitching dilemma. Livan Hernandez will now start Friday against the Royals, and the rest of the rotation will be pushed back a day. It allowed the team to skip Slowey's scheduled start on Sunday and not to have to make a decision on an additional starter until Tuesday.
March 31, 2008
Livan Hernandez scattered seven hits without issuing a walk, while giving up two runs in his first appearance as an American Leaguer Monday night. The 12-year veteran struck out one and threw any one of his ugly arsenal. From 59 mph curveballs to a fastball that registered in the mid-80s. Hernandez lives dangerously and eventually, especially in the AL, it will catch up to him. The Cuban-defector pitched 201 innings in 2007, but gave up an unfathomable 247 hits. Hernandez lives dangerously and eventually, especially in the AL, it will catch up to him. The Cuban-defector pitched 201 innings in 2007, but gave up an unfathomable 247 hits. These peripherals simply won't work in the American League.
March 26, 2008
Livan Hernandez had a strong showing against Tampa Bay on Wednesday as he improved his record to 2-2 with a win. He only allowed one run on four hits over six innings, with one walk and five strikeouts. The Twins must be pleased with his showing today and he will provide depth to their rotation.
March 21, 2008
Livan Hernandez threw 87 pitches on Friday and the results were encouraging as he lasted five innings and gave up only two runs. Livan, who lowered his ERA this spring to 8.00, struck out six batters on the day. Here is a bold prediction; Livan will win at least 10 games and throw 200 innings this season, something he has done each of the past eight years, though he is coming off a season of a 4.93 ERA and 1.60 WHIP marking him as waiver wire fodder in mixed leagues.
March 16, 2008
In a concerning sign for the Twins, hoping to turn to a veteran pitcher to carry the load, Livan Hernandez struggled in a Grapefruit League loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, 8-3, according to the Associated Press. The Blue Jays stole three bases on Hernandez during his four-plus innings of work on Sunday. The steals weren't the only time the Blue Jays were attempting to run on Hernandez, as many times when balls were hit, the runners were already in motion. Hernandez admitted after the game that he was not too pleased with his inability to stop the running game and that he'll try to make adjustments the next time he's on the mound. "Sometimes, you get lazy and they run easy," Hernandez said. "I was not going to home plate like I'm supposed to go -- fast." With the season right around the corner, it would seem a bad sign that the veteran hurler is playing lazy now. However, it is early and the problem should be fixable. What may be more concerning is his work as the Twins' ace as the right-handed Hernandez gave up six runs. He allowed nine hits and has posted a 9.69 ERA in four starts this spring.
March 12, 2008
Livan Hernandez has made seven career opening day starts, according to the Star Tribune, and the Twins are leaning toward giving him the ball for the 2008 opening event. "We're kind of trying to go with that, but we'll see how everything goes," manager Ron Gardenhire said. "He should be the guy." Hernandez lowered his spring training ERA to 8.00 in Tuesday's 7-1 loss to Tampa Bay, giving up two runs on three hits in four innings. This move says a lot about the Twins chances of winning the AL Central; slim to none.
March 6, 2008
Livan Hernandez, who signed a one-year deal with the Twins in February, was hit hard on Thursday. The Minnesota right-hander gave up six runs, five earned, on 10 hits over three innings in his second start of the spring. He walked one, struck out one and gave up one home run. The team is expecting more for their $5 million investment.
February 12, 2008
Livan Hernandez has signed a one-year deal with the Twins, according to RotoTimes.com sources. The Twins were just one of several organizations trying to lock Hernandez into a one-year contract. FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the deal is worth $5-6 million, though Hernandez can earn more if he hits some incentives.
February 10, 2008
Troy Rench of the Denver Post reports that the Dodgers have an interest in free agent Livan Hernandez. The projected rotation for LA has Brad Penny, Derek Lowe, Chad Billingsley, Hiroki Kuroda and Jason Schmidt rounding out the starting five; but Schmidt's health has reportedly raised some red flags within the Dodgers front office and the organization will make sure they have plenty of options if Schmidt isn't registering 90 plus on the radar gun this spring.
February 7, 2008
Livan Hernandez is interested in returning to the Nationals. "I was the Opening Day starter when the Nationals came to Washington [in 2005]. It would be nice to have that same feeling [at the new park]. Sometimes, it's not about the money. It's how you feel," Hernandez said by phone to MLB.com. "I would love to go to Washington. There are things to do over there. Maybe the [Nationals'] budget [is low]. I'm willing to work with anything." The Nats are interested in Hernandez, but they are apparently willing to offer only one year, while Livan would like three.
January 25, 2008
The Rocky Mountain News reports that the Mets are close to signing free-agent right-hander Livan Hernandez to a contract. Hernandez was 11-11 with a 4.93 ERA and a scary 1.60 WHIP for the NL West champion Diamondbacks last season. He's the epitome of an "inning eater," as he's topped 200 innings in eight straight seasons, but his ERA has spiked in each of the last four years. Livan will join his brother Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez in New York.
