Bill Mueller announced his retirement on Friday, according to the AP. Mueller played just 32 games with the Dodgers last season due to a career-ending knee injury. He has taken a job with the Dodgers' front office.
July 21, 2006
Bill Mueller said that doctors have ruled out all known procedures to repair his deteriorating right knee, according to the Dodgers website. "We don't know what's left," said Mueller, who will continue rehab in hopes of a miraculous recovery. Though he is signed through 2007, Mueller's career could very well be over.

Not only could the knee injury of Bill Mueller prevent him from playing this year, but it could be career-threatening, according to the LA Times. The surgery Mueller had in May was the third on the same knee in three years, and recovery has been very slow. "He gets to a certain point in treatment and starts getting sore," trainer Stan Johnston said. "He's got degenerative, arthritic changes in his knee. There is cumulative damage from all the procedures." When asked if Mueller's career could be over, Johnston replied, "That's still up in the air."
June 21, 2006
Dodgers GM Ned Colletti admitted yesterday that he is "not convinced" that Bill Mueller will be able to return to action this season, citing the slow pace of the third baseman's recovery from knee surgery, according to the LA Times. The Dodgers moved him to the 60-day DL Tuesday, so he won't even be eligible to return until the middle of next month.
June 20, 2006
The Dodgers moved Bill Mueller from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL to make room on the 40-man roster for Cesar Izturis. Mueller, recovering from knee surgery, is expected to be sidelined for at least another month.
