Jeff Bagwell officially announced his retirement Friday, the AP reports. The 38-year-old Bagwell retired as Houston's leader in homers, RBI (1,529), walks (1,401) and extra-base hits (969). He finished with a .297 career average. Bagwell's last pro at-bat came in the 2005 World Series; his problems with an arthritic right shoulder kept him from playing last season.

The Astros declined their $18 million option Jeff Bagwell Tuesday, according to the AP. Instead, the 'Stros will pay him a $7 million buyout to complete his $85 million, 5-year contract. Bagwell, who didn't play at all in 2006 because of back issues, hasn't said whether or not he intends to retire, but there's little doubt that he's hung up his cleats for the last time.
