December 3, 2008 The Chicago White Sox are willing to listen to offers on DH Jim Thome and first baseman Paul Konerko, according to Yahoo! Sports.
Our View:Chicago moved Javier Vazquez and is apparently doing everything in their power to get younger and eliminate payroll.
October 2, 2008 In one of the most tiring traditions in sports, Chicago Mayor Richard Daley bet St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker, Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio and Clearwater Mayor Frank Hibbard on who would win the playoff series between the White Sox and Rays, according to the Tampa Tribune. Daley bet polish sausages, and assorted food and drink items from the Chicago area, such as peanuts from Fisher Nuts. The three Florida mayors also bet local food items such as oranges, along with locally made cigars. The two cities also pledged to donate sporting goods (Chicago) and beach wear (St. Petersburg) to 150 children in the Boys and Girls Club.
Our View:We wonder if the winning mayors will be taxed on these items, as they could certainly be construed as profit, right?
September 30, 2008 Jim Thome hit a home run, his 34th of the year, the only run in the White Sox 1-0 victory over the Twins in the 163rd game of the season.
Our View:Thome ends the year with 34 home runs and 90 RBI, the 12th time in 13 seasons that he has hit at least 30 home runs with 85 or more RBI. The power is still there, even if the average is a completely downer at this point (.245).
September 6, 2008 Jim Thome's only hit in six at bats on Saturday was a timely one. In the 15th inning, he took Angels' reliever Justin Speier deep for a walk-off home run.
Our View:The blast helped put another game of distance between the White Sox and the Twins and was Thome's 30th of the season.
August 31, 2008 When White Sox slugger Jim Thome hit a home run in the first inning of Sunday's game, it was the 536th of his career, which tied him with Mickey Mantle for 14th on the all-time list, according to WhiteSox.com.
Our View:Thome has not done a whole lot with his batting average, but fantasy owners continue to get home runs and RBI from him.
