Newsbreakers
September 29, 2008
Justin Speier has been left off the Angels' postseason roster as the club opted to go with rookie Kevin Jepsen, according to the LA Times. Speier said, "It's definitely disappointing. I felt like I've pitched well lately, so I know that they probably had a tough decision. But the bottom line is I didn't have the kind of year that I wanted to have."

Our View:Speier is no longer a dominant setup man, and struggled with a 5.03 ERA and 1.41 WHIP over 68 innings of relief this season.

The Angels are missing K-Rod already. With their closer sidelined for the next few days with an ankle injury, the Halos turned to Justin Speier, who served up a two-run homer to Travis Hafner in the ninth inning of a 4-3 loss. We're betting Scot Shields will get the next save opportunity.
March 23, 2008
Justin Speier threw a perfect inning against the Dodgers on Saturday, with two strikeouts. He is yet to allow a run over five spring innings, and could play a larger role if setup man Scot Shields isn't ready for Opening Day due to forearm soreness.
September 16, 2007
Justin Speier, out with a strained right knee, played long toss Saturday and will throw a bullpen session today, according to the LA Times. Barring any setbacks, he could return to action on Monday.
September 15, 2007
Justin Speier has been unavailable since Tuesday due to a strained MCL in his right knee. The problem has bothered him for about a week, but he aggravated it during Tuesday's outing, according to the LA Times. "The trainers think it's a small issue, but they want me to calm it down, take one step at a time. You don't want to change your delivery or mechanics and do something you're not used to doing." He was able to throw 20 pitches in a bullpen session while wearing a brace Friday, so hopefully he will be ready to get back in the mix for the Angels soon.
