Newsbreakers
December 23, 2008
Corey Patterson has signed a minor league deal with the Nationals worth $800,000, according to the Denver Post.

Our View:Patterson has favorable speed but only hit 47 homers over his last four seasons after breaking out with 24 with the Cubs in 2005. The 29-year-old outfielder is not likely going to get his career back on track with the Nationals. He notably parted ways with high-profile agent Scott Boras in the off-season.
December 8, 2008
Corey Patterson has fired high-profile agent Scott Boras and is now employing Jim Bronner and Bob Gilhooley, according to ESPN.

Our View:It is unclear why he decided to part ways with Boras at the onset of Winter Meetings. Perhaps Boras didn't hold him in high regard as some of his elite clients, such as Mark Teixeira.
October 7, 2008
The Cincinnati Reds will not bring back outfielder Corey Patterson, according to MLB.com. "I don't think he'll be back. We'll turn the page." Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said.

Our View:Patterson was awful this year, hitting .205 with a worse than pathetic .238 on-base percentage. It probably didn't help that there were rumors in the media that Patterson was dating manager Dusty Baker's daughter. Baker was so unhappy with the rumor, that he took time out to squash it publicly.
September 25, 2008
Reds manager Dusty Baker had heard enough of the gossip about his 28-year-old daughter dating Cincinnati outfielder Corey Patterson, so he went out of his way to squash the rumor, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. "This is so far out of line. It's hurtful to my wife and daughter. How can people stoop that low?" Baker asked.

Our View:This is an odd step for the manager to take, as many people are probably hearing about this for the first time. She can probably do better than a .206 hitter, anyway.
August 24, 2008
Reds outfielder Corey Patterson's batting average remains under the Mendoza line after a 1-for-4 performance in the Reds loss to Colorado.

Our View:The good news is that Patterson stole his 13th base of the season. However, even if he had 25 steals, it wouldn't be enough to compensate for that average in fantasy play.
