Triple-A Columbus outfielder Alex Escobar has been released, according to the Washington Post.

Our View:He played for the Nationals briefly in 2006, and hit .356 over 87 at-bats, with four homers.

The Nationals reassigned Alex Escobar and Humberto Cota to minor league camp on Tuesday, the Washington Post confirms. Cota refused the assignment and became a free agent.

Alex Escobar will have to wait until next season to play in a game. He's slated to undergo ankle surgery that will rule him out for the remainder of this campaign, according to the Washington Post. Offseason shoulder surgery and the ankle problem kept Escobar from taking part in any games this year, so hopefully he'll be able to get back in the mix next season.

Alex Escobar was expected back on Tuesday, but general manager Jim Bowden told that Washington Post, "I'm not ruling out this weekend." Escobar is returning from a shoulder and ankle injuries. The Nationals plan on playing him in left field everyday once he returns and moving Ryan Church to center.

Alex Escobar will go on a minor league rehab assignment over the weekend and could rejoin the club after the All-Star break. He has been out all season while recovering from offseason shoulder surgery and a more recent sprained ankle. Escobar could work his way into an everyday job when he returns. "I don't think we can be getting too picky over where to place a guy with a bat like his," manager Manny Acta tells the Washington Post.
