Newsbreakers
January 7, 2009
Walt Jocketty told the Cincinnati Enquirer that recently re-signed Jerry Hairston Jr. is not expected to be the starting shortstop for the Reds next season, citing the positive rehab of Alex Gonzalez's knee. He expects to use him more in left firld.

Our View:Hairston will almost undoubtedly man shortstop if Gonzalez is unable to go at the start of the season. If he does not find a regular job, he will have no fantasy value.
January 7, 2009
Jerry Hairston Jr. has agreed to a one-year deal worth $2 million (guaranteed) to remain with the Reds, according to the Hot Stove Blog on MLB.com. It could be worth up to $4 million with incentives.

Our View:He opted to stay in Cincinnati, rather than join other interested clubs Kansas City and St. Louis. Hairston will likely be the Reds' starting shortstop unless Alex Gonzalez proves he is ready following knee surgery.
January 5, 2009
The Reds had talks with Jerry Hairston Jr. over the weekend, according to MLB.com. The Reds are looking to re-sign him after he had a productive season in 2008 when healthy. "I would expect something to happen this week, one way or another," Reds GM Walt Jocketty said. "We're hopeful."

Our View:Hairston Jr. would give the Reds' roster lots of versatility as he can play the outfield or middle infield for the club.
December 27, 2008
The Cincinnati Reds remain interested in signing Jerry Hairston Jr., reports the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View:Hairston was a nice contributor to fantasy teams last season - that is, when he wasn't injured. He played in just 80 games, but did wind up hitting .326 with 15 stolen bases.
December 23, 2008
The Royals like Jerry Hairston Jr. but don't have the funds to sign him, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Our View:The utility man is desirable to MLB clubs as he held a .427 OBP when working in the leadoff spot, and stole 15 bases over 80 games.
