The AP reports that Brandon Phillips had two pins inserted into his right index finger on Friday to help repair the break in it. Phillips suffered the fracture when he was hit by a pitch on a bunt attempt in the 11th inning of Wednesday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers. He stayed in the contest and delivered the go-ahead RBI single later in the at-bat, lifting the Reds to a 5-4 victory.

Our View:Phillips, 27, posted a .261 batting average with 21 home runs, 23 stolen bases and 78 RBI in 141 games this campaign. Although a good season for a second baseman, the numbers were lower than most expectations. This surgery may have owners questioning his worth for next season, but it should not take a hit. The Reds will be more explosive next season and Phillips' numbers should benefit across the board.

Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips broke his right index finger in a bunt attempt on Tuesday and he will miss the rest of the regular season, according to The Sports Network.

Our View:This is a significant blow to fantasy owners who certainly enjoyed Phillips' 20-20 season and 78 RBI.
August 17, 2008
Brandon Phillips went 2-for-5 with a three-run homer in Sunday's 7-3 win over the Cardinals at the Great American Ballpark.

Our View:Phillips has impressively homered in three straight games, giving him 20 for the season.
August 13, 2008
Brandon Phillips went 0-for-4 to contribute to his team's 5-2 loss to Pittsburgh.

Our View:Phillips' batting average dropped below .200 for the month of August, and he is struggling with his plate discipline with an OBP under .270.
July 20, 2008
The Reds failed to match the stout offensive effort of the Mets, fallling 7-5, though second baseman Brandon Phillips did what he could to reverse their fortunes. Phillips went 2-for-4 at the dish with his 16th homer of the season along with one stolen base (his 20th thus far) to total two RBIs and two runs scored on the day.

Our View:Phillips is hitting .277 through July with four stolen bases, three home runs, and 15 RBIs thus far. He's doing fantasy owners proud and helping the Reds stay respectable.
July 3, 2008
Brandon Phillips went 3-for-4 with three RBI and the Cincinnati Reds rallied for a 5-3 win over the Nationals on Thursday night.

Our View:Phillips now has 54 RBI, 50 runs scored, 16 stolen bases and 14 home runs on the season.
July 1, 2008
Brandon Phillips went 3-for-5 with four RBI in Tuesday's 6-5 loss to Pittsburgh. He hit two singles and a two-run homer.

June 21, 2008
Brandon Phillips went 2-for-4 and generated a pair of RBI in Saturday's 6-0 shutout victory against the Yankees. He hit a single and a double, and also scored two runs.

Our View:Phillips has racked up a solid 43 runs and 43 RBI over 73 games, with 13 stolen bases. He just needs to raise his .267 average.
June 19, 2008
Brandon Phillips went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI in Thursday's 7-4 loss to the Dodgers. Both of his hits were singles. He also chipped in a stolen base.

June 12, 2008
Brandon Phillips knocked in three runs for the Reds on Thursday on a bases loaded triple that broke open a close game in the seventh inning.

Our View:Phillips has struggled to keep the batting average respectable (.269), but the rest of his offensive line has been solid with 12 home runs, 11 stolen bases and 40 runs scored.
June 11, 2008
Moving Brandon Phillips to shortstop is not an option for the Reds, Dusty Baker told the Cincinnati Enquirer. "No," Baker said. "I know everybody says that, and he could probably do it, but how many guys do you want out of position? You want one or you want two or three?"

Our View:The Reds have had a rash of injuries at short, but Jeff Keppinger should be back before too long.
June 4, 2008
Cincinnati second baseman Brandon Phillips went 1-for-3 with a walk against Philadelphia this evening, but more importantly, he swiped two bases that helped him earn two runs scored.

Our View:Phillips now carries 11 stolen bases on the season and has posted at least one hit in six of his last eight games.
May 25, 2008
From time to time, professional baseball needs a marathon to spice things up a bit. Tonight, Cincinnati and San Diego put forth such an effort, needing 18 innings to complete their matchup, and in the end it was the visiting Reds taking it on the chin, 12-9. The players at the top of the order racked up eight or nine at-bats on the day, led by second baseman Brandon Phillips , going 3-for-8 at the dish with one walk and his ninth home run of the season to total two RBIs and three runs scored on the day, also throwing in a stolen base for good measure.

Our View:Phillips is no power monster by any means, but he's hitting .316 through the month of may and has flashed a bit of speed, swiping five bases along the way.
May 20, 2008
Brandon Phillips had a big night on Monday as he went 4-for-5 at the plate and stole his seventh base of the season on the bases.

Our View:Phillips has six 2-hit or better games in his last 10 outings to boost his average up to .308. He continues to be in the middle of the second tier of second baseman behind Chase Utley.
May 12, 2008
Brandon Phillips hit is seven home run of the season in the seventh inning off of losing pitcher Taylor Tankersley as the Reds defeated the Marlins 8-7 on Monday night.

Our View:Phillips added a single in his two hit performance. The Reds second baseman raised his average to .290 on the season.
May 9, 2008
Second baseman Brandon Phillips was out of the Friday starting lineup against the Mets due to a sore left calf, sustained on a foul ball Wednesday.

Our View:Cincinnati manager Dusty Baker said Phillips might have been available to pinch hit on Friday night. With the postponement of the game due to rain, Phillips is expected to be in the lineup during Saturday's double-header for at least one of the games.
May 9, 2008
Brandon Phillips is not in Friday's starting lineup. The Reds are using Jerry Hairston Jr. at second base and hitting him second in the order.

Our View:Phillips is hitting .276 with 20 runs scored, 16 RBI, five stolen bases and six home runs. Far from All Star numbers but not the kind of funk that would get a player of his tools benched. It's likely Dusty Baker is giving Phillips a night off against Mike Pelfrey and the Mets.
May 7, 2008
Brandon Phillips helped the Reds break out of their offensive funk on Wednesday afternoon by hitting his sixth home run of the season. Phillips left with a bruised left calf, sustained on a foul tip. The team is calling him day-to-day.

Our View:Phillips and the Reds offense has been stale as of late. The fifteen run performance against Chicago comes on the heels of being shutout by Carlos Zambrano on Tuesday. The Cincinnati second baseman now has 20 runs, 16 RBI and five stolen bases on the season.
May 3, 2008
Brandon Phillips went 1-for-4 and registered the Reds' lone RBI in Saturday's 9-1 loss to Atlanta.

April 27, 2008
Brandon Phillips homered twice and the Cincinnati Reds routed the Giants by a score of 10-1 on Sunday.

April 25, 2008
Brandon Phillips was given the day off Friday and it's all because of his recent struggles, according to the team website. Phillips had a career year in 2007 hitting 30 home runs and recording 94 RBI. Reds manager Dusty Baker told MLB.com, "He's chasing balls and his concentration is not there." Since April 12, Phillips has hit .158 (6-for-38) and seen his batting average plummet to .250 from .320.

Our View:Edwin Encarnacion, who entered the game on a 14-game hitting streak, made his first appearance of the season as the Reds' cleanup hitter.
April 19, 2008
Brandon Phillips and Ken Griffey Jr. will swap spots in the batting order with Phillips moving into the third hole, this according to MLB.com.

Our View:This move now puts two lefties, Griffey and Adam Dunn back-to-back, but given the talents of both that means that there shouldn't be much concern of late inning specialists being effective. Plus, Phillips has struggled early on and his 30/30 talents seem better suited for the third hole than the cleanup role anyway.
April 18, 2008
Brandon Phillips came back from his day off on Thursday to pick up two hits and a run scored on Friday night. He was also thrown out for the second time on the bases trying to steal.

Our View:Phillips has only one home run and five RBI through 16 games so he has a long road to travel to justify the faith of those who chose him in the top-25 picks this season.
April 17, 2008
Brandon Phillips will be given the day off on Thursday, this according to MLB.com. "I think he needs it. He's played every day, every inning," manager Dusty Baker said. "You see him swinging at bad pitches and taking good ones. He's not trusting himself right now." Ryan Freel will play in his place.

Our View:Phillips is 6 for his last 31 (.194) and is without a hit in 10 AB, so perhaps a mental day off will allow him to get his game back on track.
April 11, 2008
Brandon Phillips has fared well over his career against Paul Maholm, today's opposing pitcher for Pittsburgh, according to MLB.com. Phillips is hitting 7-for-20 against the Pirates' lefty, with three homers and seven RBI. Phillips should have continued success against him today.
April 2, 2008
Brandon Phillips went deep on Wednesday night as he was able to record two hits, two RBI and two runs scored for the Reds. Phillips, universally regarded as the second best option at second base this season, will once again target another 30/30 season from second base this year from while batting in the cleanup spot.
April 1, 2008
Brandon Phillips went 1-for-4 with an RBI against Arizona on opening day, but he struck out three times in a 4-2 loss. Phillips is an elite 2B and he should bounce back fine.
March 23, 2008
Brandon Phillips went 2-for-4 against Houston on Saturday with one RBI, his 15th of the spring. Phillips knocked in 94 RBI in his breakout season of 2007, and is off to a great start in that department.
March 13, 2008
Brandon Phillips went 1-for-3 with a two-run double, as he pushed his spring RBI count to 11. Phillips knocked in 94 RBI in 2007 and is off to a great start in that department.
March 8, 2008
With a three-run homer from Friday fresh in our memories, Brandon Phillips continued to carry a heavy stick, homering again and adding a two-run double on Saturday with four runs batted in, leading the way in a 13-8 win for the Reds over the split-squad Braves. Phillips also carried a sacrifice fly into the box score. The second baseman hit 30 homers and stole 32 bases last season, joining Eric Davis and Barry Larkin as the only players in franchise history to reach 30-30. Now the Reds are all but sold on moving him from 2nd in the batting order to 4th, and fantasy owners should adjust accordingly.
March 7, 2008
With the wind gusting up to 25 mph out to left field Friday in Sarasota, the Pirates banged out 14 hits and beat the Cincinnati Reds, 13-8. According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, in the first inning of the Reds loss, Brandon Phillips rode the strong breeze for a three-run homer. "It was 3-2 (count), so I might as well have told him what was coming," Van Benschoten said. "The wind helped." Phillips is one of the Big Three when fantasy owners speak of the best second baseman in mixed formats.
February 25, 2008
Reds skipper Dusty Baker told the Cincinnati Enquirer on Monday he will keep Brandon Phillips in the cleanup spot this season. "Brandon will probably hit third someday," Baker said. "But, right now, I need to him break up Junior and (Adam) Dunn." On who would hit from the No. 1 spot - Baker wasn't definitive. The three candidates are Jay Bruce, Ryan Freel and Norris Hopper, who are fighting for the starting center field role. Reds Insider, John Fay, doesn't give rookie Bruce any billing in his projected opening day lineup. Fay lists both Freel and Hopper as the two candidates to lead off.
February 15, 2008
The terms of Brandon Phillips' new deal have been announced. The second baseman will receive $27 million over four years, and the Reds have an option for a fifth year. If Phillips is traded, the option becomes mutual and would bring the total value of the contract to $43.25 million, according to the AP. Phillips became the second second baseman in major league history to join the 30-30 club last season.
February 15, 2008
Brandon Phillips agreed in principle to a long-term contract with the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday night, according to the Dayton Daily News. The terms and length of the agreement were not yet available. Phillips, who plays what most media outlets consider a shallow fantasy position, second base, is being drafted as the top second baseman in many early Mock Drafts. Phillips is going before the Yanks Robinson Cano and the Phillies Chase Utley -- whom are the big three at their position.
