Newsbreakers
November 7, 2008
The Orioles remain interested in Khalil Greene, but he is not ranked high on their target list of shortstops, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:The Orioles would prefer to get a longtime solution at the position, and Greene is eligible to become a free agent after the 2009 season. He has a poor track record with durability as well.
November 6, 2008
Despite a rumor that is floating out there, Khalil Greene will not be joining the Reds any time soon, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. "We've still got (Alex) Gonzalez," Reds GM Walt Jocketty said. "If he's not healthy, we've got options with (Jeff) Keppinger and (Paul) Janish."

Our View:Greene will look to resurrect his career in '09 after falling to .213 with 10 home runs in 389 AB, due to injury, a season after he blasted 27 home runs and knocked in 97 for the Padres.
November 5, 2008
The Blue Jays are the latest team to garner interest in Padres' infielder Khalil Greene, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. It was previously noted that the Orioles, Reds, and Tigers are interested in him.

Our View:Padres' GM Kevin Towers noted that trading Greene would likely be in a deal separate from Jake Peavy. Greene has a poor track record with durability, but provides solid power at shortstop when healthy, as he crushed 27 homers in 2007.
November 3, 2008
The San Diego Union Tribune reports that the Orioles, Reds and Tigers are among those interested in shortstop Khalil Greene. He is guaranteed $6.5 million next season.

Our View:Greene hit just .213 in 389 at-bats last season, however he is only a year removed from 27 home runs and 97 RBI.
October 4, 2008
Mike Weiner of the major league players association has said that the grievance the Padres are pursuing against shortstop Khalil Greene likely will not be heard before spring training, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. The club is attempting to recover up to $1.47 million in salary paid after Greene's self-inflicted hand injury ended his season on July 30. Padres CEO Sandy Alderson has said the grievance goes beyond trying to recover salary. "In the larger sense, it's about deterring this kind of conduct in the future because the consequences can be critical to a team," he said.

Our View:There is precedent to this, as pitcher Doyle Alexander won a grievance in 1982 after the Yankees tried to recover salary paid while he was sidelined for two months as a result of a fractured knuckle that he suffered after punching a dugout wall. You've got to wonder if it is worth "sending a message" when this will likely alienate Greene, as well as possibly other players on the team, as well.
