September 28, 2008
The AP reports that Jose Lopez made his 12th start of the season at first base. Seattle was trying the usual second baseman there this month to see if he could possibly be a first baseman in 2009. Asked what he thought of that, Lopez said, “No. I don’t want to move.”

Our View:Lopez set career highs in home runs (17), RBI (89), runs (80) and batting average (.297) in 2008. The 24-year-old from Anzoategui should continue to improve regardles of where he plays.
September 27, 2008
Jose Lopez went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBI in Friday's 10-8 win over Oakland. Both of his hits went for home runs, at the expense of pitcher Sean Gallagher.

Our View:Lopez now has 17 homers for the season, and has collected a hit in six of his last seven games.
September 16, 2008
Jose Lopez made another start at first base on Tuesday but it was his bat that got the most attention. He hit his 15th home run on a night where he went 3-for-4.

Our View:He has raised his average to .299, which is worth noting since he hit just .252 last season. His 15 home runs is also a career high.
September 14, 2008
Lopez made his first career start at first base on Saturday, the Mariners' team website reports.

Our View:This seems unlikely to become a trend, but Lopez does gain first base eligibility in some leagues.
September 12, 2008
Jose Lopez went 2-for-4 on Thursday night as he knocked in his 80th run of the year for the Mariners to best his career-high mark of 79 from two years ago.

Our View:Lopez has proven that last season's sub par effort was the result of the off field issues that he dealt with including the death of his brother. Second baseman that hit .292 with 14 home runs and 80 RBI are still pretty valuable pieces even in this day and age of big offensive numbers, and therefore Lopez has been worthy of starting all year.
August 13, 2008
Second baseman Jose Lopez returned to the team's lineup yesterday after being pulled during the middle of the game on Sunday after making an error, according to the Tacoma News Tribune. Mangaer Jim Riggleman wanted to make sure Lopez understood that you have to focus at all times.

Our View:Lopez is one of the few viable fantasy players on Seattle's team, so owners are happy to see there will be no long-term consequences.
August 2, 2008
Jose Lopez extended hit hitting streak to 19 games on Friday night as he went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Our View:A .306 average for guy who plays second base and was a late round pick is great value. Lopez is proving that last years regressing was due to off field family issues and not the result of pitchers figuring him out.
July 29, 2008
The Mariners may have been frustrated with the end result, falling 11-10 against the Rangers, but the burst of offense was reason for optimism. Second baseman Jose Lopez was a force for the cause, going 3-for-5 with his eighth homer of the season, posting one RBI and three runs scored along the way.

Our View:Lopez is enjoying solid success at the plate this month, hitting .303 with 17 RBIs and 13 runs scored through July.
July 28, 2008
Jose Lopez was 2-for-4 on Monday and extended his hitting streak to 15 games.

Our View:His average is up to .301 and he is hitting fifth in the Mariners lineup. He has 57 RBI on the year and is having his best season yet. At just 24-years old, it appears Lopez is the real deal and should be a solid fantasy contributor at his position for years to come.
July 26, 2008
The Mariners failed to find the offense needed, despite matching the Blue Jays in the hit column, and suffered the 8-3 loss to Toronto despite a strong day from second baseman Jose Lopez . Lopez went 2-for-4 with his 27th double and seventh homer of the season to drive in all three runs for the Jays.

Our View:Lopez is now hitting .299 on the season, riding the fun of a 13-game hit streak.
July 23, 2008
Jose Lopez extended hit personal hitting streak to 11-games on Monday as he went 2-for-6 with a run scored for the Mariners.

Our View:Lopez continues to produce solid numbers with a .297 average, six home runs and 52 RBI, and though he isn't a sexy name or a big time contributor, he has proven to be a reliable option up the middle this season.
June 20, 2008
Jose Lopez was the Mariners big bat on Friday night as he had three hits and four RBI in the 10-2 victory over the Braves.

Our View:Lopez is hitting .295 with 39 RBI in his attempt to make us all forget his dreadful second half to the 2007 season that included terrible performance on the field, and personal tragedy off it.
June 18, 2008
The Mariners put the 5-4 win on the board in interleague action against the Marlins tonight, led by second baseman Jose Lopez . Lopez went 2-for-5 with two doubles, posting two RBIs and one run scored on the night.

Our View:Lopez is starting to heat up a bit, hitting .288 through June with three home runs and seven RBIs (after hitting no homers with nine RBIs through May).
June 2, 2008
Jose Lopez went 2-for-4 with a homer and an RBI double on Monday night. Unfortunately, he accounted for all two of the Mariners' runs against the Angels.

Our View:What's new? Lopez is hitting pretty well out of the No. 2 hole this year, but the Mariners rarely hit well as a team.
May 18, 2008
Jose Lopez had three RBI on Sunday to push his season total to 24 from the second base position for the Mariners.

Our View:Lopez, who hit third today, is batting .307 on the year and has done a great job putting the bat on the ball with only 11 K. However, he swings at everything as evidenced by his five walks, so he will likely need to improve that eye if he wants to keep his average around the .300 mark.
May 11, 2008
The Mariners moved Jose Lopez from second to fifth in the batting order on Saturday. "I thought we needed some more punch in the middle of the lineup, that's why I moved Lopez down," manager John McLaren tells the Seattle Times.

Our View:Punch? Lopez's career slugging percentage is .380, and he's swatted two homers this year. The second baseman was doing a nice job in the two hole, and we can only hope this move doesn't get him off track.
April 15, 2008
Jose Lopez became the 12th player in major league history to hit three sacrifice flies in a game. Seattle put a 11-6 beat down on the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night.

Our View:Lopez finished the game 1-for-2 with four RBI. Incredibly, the M's second baseman has 13 RBI in 15 games so far this year.
April 2, 2008
Jose Lopez enjoyed a nice evening at the ballpark in support of Seattle's 4-1 win over the Texas Rangers. Lopez went 1-for-4 at the plate, hitting his first home run of the season in the 5th inning off Jason Jennings with two on and two out.
March 31, 2008
Jose Lopez was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI in the Mariners home opening win over the Rangers. Lopez, only garners AL attention, but has the potential to find his way into mixed formats as a middle infielder with any April success.
March 31, 2008
Jose Lopez has nailed down the number two spot in the Mariners' batting order, according to MLB.com. Manager McLaren stated, "I think he's grown up a lot," McLaren said. "I think he's ready to handle it. He's got some pop in his bat, he's got bat control, he can hit behind the runner. He came into camp with such a great attitude. I feel good about Jose." Lopez hit .252 in 2007.
March 26, 2008
Jose Lopez has been spending time in the second spot of the batting order this spring, and the Mariners may stick with that role. "We're thinking about it strongly, I think that's safe to say," manager John McLaren tells the Seattle Times. "He's hit behind the runner. He's swinging at more strikes. He's going to get more strikes with Ichiro going first. I'm not going to say it's 100 percent, but we're leaning that way." Lopez spent the bulk of his time batting eighth or ninth in 2007. A bump up to the second slot could mean more runs and an increased fantasy value.
February 22, 2008
Jose Lopez finally joined the Mariners on Thursday, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. He had been delayed due to a problem getting a visa to travel from Venezuela.
February 20, 2008
Jose Lopez remained in Venezuela Tuesday due to a visa problem, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. "Jose's not going to be on time," manager John McLaren said. "It is out of his control. He did everything he should have. The consulate down there can be tough to deal with. They have you completely at their mercy. It's not like he showed up yesterday looking for a visa. The consulate has just dragged its feet." Lopez should only miss a few days, but you never know when dealing with a bureaucracy.
