Newsbreakers
September 6, 2008
Brandon Webb was pulled after just 5.2 innings against the Dodgers on Saturday and has now posted three terrible starts in a row. He gave up seven runs on five hits and seven walks. Manny Ramirez was the only Dodger to hit a home run off of him - a three-run shot in the fifth.

Our View:Webb has combined to go just 13.2 innings in his last three starts. He has surrendered 21 runs in that span to go with 13 walks and 22 hits. It's difficult to explain the struggles and despite them, we still feel he is one of the best starters in the NL. With this recent string of catastrophic appearances, he may be in danger of losing a Cy Young award to CC Sabathia, who has only made 12 NL starts.
August 31, 2008
Brandon Webb was rocked by the Dodgers on Sunday night. He allowed eight hits and eight runs (six earned) over 3.1 innings. Webb hurt himself by walking five and giving up two homers.

Our View:That's back-to-back awful outings for the Cy Young contender. We're not ready to panic.
August 27, 2008
Brandon Webb had a hiccup Tuesday, as he gave up six runs on nine hits and a walk over just 4 1/3 innings in a loss to the Padres.

Our View:Webb failed to reach the 20-win plateau, but he's still the favorite for the NL Cy Young.
August 21, 2008
Brandon Webb's monster season continued Thursday night against the Padres as he won his 19th game of the season. Webb pitched seven scoreless innings, striking out eight and only allowing three hits.

Our View:Webb has been outstanding this season and is a leading candidate for the NL Cy Young. Expect his dominance to continue as he seeks his 20th win of the season next start.
August 21, 2008
Brandon Webb (18-4, 2.85) hopes to continue his dominance tonight in his start against the struggling San Diego Padres.

Our View:Webb has been outstanding this season and is a leading candidate for the NL Cy Young. Expect his dominance to continue tonight against the lackluster Padres.
August 15, 2008
Brandon Webb made another case for his second Cy Young award Friday, giving up only two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out six over eight innings.

Our View:Webb has 18 wins now and is a clear favorite for the Cy.
August 10, 2008
Brandon Webb earned yet another victory, his 17th, in pitching Arizona to a 6-1 win over Atlanta. Webb only threw six innings, but he struck out five and gave up only one run.

Our View:Webb is making a strong bid for the Cy Young Award, and in his last two outings, he has given up just two runs in 15 innings.
August 5, 2008
The ace was at it again as Arizona turned to the dominating arm of RHP Brandon Webb to get the 3-1 win over Pittsburgh. Webb pitched the full game, allowing just one run on nine hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

Our View:The guy was 3-0 last month, he's touting an ERA of 2.93, and he's got his first win of August. It's business as usual for Brandon Webb.
August 5, 2008
MLB.com reports Arizona SP Brandon Webb (15-4, 3.04 ERA) will start Tuesday, August 5, against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Our View:Look for Webb to continue his dominance against the anemic Pirates lineup.
July 31, 2008
Brandon Webb won his 15th game of the season by throwing eight innings and giving up just one earned run in Arizona's 2-1 win over L.A.

Our View:Webb's ERA dropped to 3.04, and he is on his way to picking up another Cy Young Award if he keeps it up.
July 26, 2008
Brandon Webb won his 14th game of the season in the Diamondbacks 5-3 win over the Giants. He threw seven innings, surrendering three runs on four hits and striking out eight.

Our View:Webb continues his bid for the Cy Young Award, and though his counterpart, Tim Lincecum, was better, Webb still managed the win.
July 20, 2008
The Dodgers and Diamondbacks locked horns today with Arizona ruling the bulk of the day, but they fell in the top of the ninth to allow five Dodger runs and suffer the 6-5 loss. As a result, ace Brandon Webb failed to get a decision, going eight strong innings to allow just one run on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

Our View:Webb watched in horror as reliever Brandon Lyons threw 27 pitches over 2/3 of an innings, allowing five runs on five hits to blow the win. Webb has just one decision, a win, over his four July starts, allowing just eight combined earned runs over that stretch with seven walks and 22 strikeouts.
July 15, 2008
Brandon Webb officially ruled himself out for tonight's All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium, according to the Arizona Republic. He said, "I've probably got a zero percent chance of throwing. A little bit disappointing, but, obviously, I'm still here, and I'm excited just to be here and be a part of it."

Our View:Webb threw 108 pitches Sunday against the Phillies. He was hoping to be able to pitch in the All-Star Game if he had a less strenuous outing.
July 13, 2008
Brandon Webb threw well in the Diamondbacks 6-3 loss to the Phillies on Sunday. Webb pitched seven innings and struck out six while allowing two runs on seven hits.

Our View:Despite some recent less-than-perfect outings, Webb had a very good first half and is a fantasy stalwart as a pitcher.
July 8, 2008
Brandon Webb threw six shutout innings on Tuesday against the lowly Washington Nationals. He scattered six hits and two walks while striking out six.

Our View:Webb had been looking sorta shaky, given his standards, and the Nats came along at just the right time.
July 5, 2008
Brandon Webb will be the NL starter for the 2008 All-Star game, the New York Post reports. The 2006 Cy Young winner is tied for the major league lead with 12 wins, and he boasts a 3.43 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 100 strikeouts.

Our View:Some people will undoubtedly quibble with this choice, but Webb has to enter any discussion about the best pitchers in the majors.
July 3, 2008
After seemingly recovering from a rough patch of starts by defeating the Florida Marlins last Saturday, Brandon Webb struggled through six innings on Thursday afternoon. The right-hander allowed five runs on nine hits, walked two and struck out six.

Our View:Because of the miracle at Chase Field, that saw the D'backs score six runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Webb didn't factor into the decision. He pitched poorly enough to deserve the loss, and at one point looked completely disinterested in pitching.
June 28, 2008
Brandon Webb struck out eight and gave up two runs in six innings for the Diamondbacks, who ended a three-game losing streak and beat Florida 6-2 on Saturday night.

Our View: The Diamondbacks' ace gave up 11 earned runs in his previous two starts, both losses, but bounced back strong to keep Arizona (41-40) from falling below the .500 mark for the first time this season.
June 28, 2008
The Diamondbacks will be enjoying the efforts of the best pitcher on the staff as they face the Florida Marlins this evening, one of few non-interleague slates on the day, according to the Sports Network. Brandon Webb comes in hoping to get his season back in dominating form, but there is reason for concern.

Our View:Webb began the season with nine straight victories, but has since dropped four of six decisions, including a 3-1 loss at Florida on May 21st, allowing six hits and three runs over seven innings in that outing, walking none and striking out seven. Webb pitched for two more wins on May 31st and June 6th to improve to 11-2, but is winless in three subsequent starts, allowing 21 hits and 12 earned runs in 15 1/3 innings against the New York Mets, Oakland and Minnesota.
June 22, 2008
Brandon Webb lost his second straight game on Sunday as he gave up five runs, four earned, over seven innings against the Twins

Our View:Since taking a ball off his hip and suffering from a "dead arm" period, Webb is 0-2 with a 8.22 ERA, awful numbers for such an excellent pitcher. The good news is that he has walked just five batters against 10 batters in those three outings, but it is clear that something could physically be bothering the big guy.
June 22, 2008
The Diamondbacks will push ace Brandon Webb to the mound today as they face the Minnesota Twins and Livan Hernandez, according to the Sports Network.

Our View:In six starts since going 9-0, Webb as struggled to three losses, going 2-3 with an ERA of 4.54 in that span. On June 17th Webb struggled through his shortest outing in four years, giving up seven runs on nine hits over 3 1/3 innings. Overall Webb now sits at 11-3 with a 3.27 ERA. On the other hand, Hernandez is 7-4 with a 5.56 ERA, picking up his first win in six starts with his last trip to the mound.
June 20, 2008
Brandon Webb still wants to remain with the D'backs but contract talks have been put on hold for the moment, according to MLB.com. Webb is under contract for 2009 and the club holds an option for the 2010 season ($8.5 million).

Our View:Arizona is simply being fiscally responsible here as they control Webb for two more years, and with the fragile nature of pitcher's arms, it will probably prove beneficial if they remain patient with their ace.
June 18, 2008
Even Brandon Webb has a hiccup every now and then. The former Cy Young winner allowed seven runs on nine hits and five walks in 3 1/3 innings in Tuesday's loss to Oakland.

Our View:This is the most runs Webb has allowed since, ironically, the last outing of his Cy Young winning 2006 campaign. Don't worry. He'll surely bounce back just fine.
June 17, 2008
Brandon Webb will be shooting for his 12th win of the season tonight when the Diamondbacks host the Athletics, according to MLB.com. Webb faced the Athletics back in 2006 and threw a complete game, while allowing one run on four hits at McAfee Coliseum. Webb is 11-2 with a 2.73 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over 14 starts this season.

Our View:Webb has been nursing a bruised hip, but Manager Bob Melvin isn't concerned, and Webb got an extra day of rest with Monday's off day.
June 12, 2008
Brandon Webb is a little sore after sustaining a bruise (above his right hip) when struck by a line drive by Carlos Delgado of the Mets, but he is not injured, according to MLB.com. Webb has experienced a decrease in velocity on his pitches, but is not concerned, as he stated, "I don't know what to say about it. My arm doesn't hurt as of yet, so I'm not concerned. I think all pitchers, over the course of the year, go through a span where they have a dead-arm period, and I think that's what this is. I don't know, we'll see."

Our View:Manager Bob Melvin isn't concerned either, and noted that a decrease in velocity at points during a season is common. His next start is scheduled for Tuesday, and he will get an extra day to rest as the team has an off day Monday.
June 12, 2008
Brandon Webb experienced decreased velocity in his last start in which ended after five innings, and stated on Wednesday that he may be going through a "dead arm" period, according to the Arizona Republic. Webb added, "Yeah, it doesn't hurt. Maybe a dead-arm period or something like that. Like I said, it doesn't hurt, so it's tough to tell. Everything feels good."

Our View:The team is hopeful he will bounce back refreshed in his next start on Tuesday against Oakland. He will be getting an extra day of rest with Monday's off day. Fantasy owners shouldn't be concerned unless he continues to struggle in his next start.
June 11, 2008
Brandon Webb was pulled after throwing 58 pitches, 40 for strikes, in five innings against the Mets. Webb allowed five hits, he didn't walk anyone, and permitted three runs to score.

Our View:Webb entered the game with a 1.06 ERA in five games at Shea. There are no injury reports floating around, so we assume that there was nothing physically wrong with Webb when he was pulled, though we are concerned given the low pitch count.
June 6, 2008
Brandon Webb picked up his 11th win of the season Friday, limiting the Pirates to one run on three hits while striking out three over seven innings of work.

Our View:Webb is as automatic as they come in the game right now.
May 31, 2008
Brandon Webb hurled a complete game shutout, with only six hits allowed, in Saturday's 4-0 win over Washington. He issued no walks with eight strikeouts.

Our View:Webb had registered back-to-back losses heading into tonight's contest, but bounced back with a vengeance against the Nationals. He is now 10-2 with a 2.69 ERA.
May 31, 2008
The Arizona Diamondbacks will look to RHP Brandon Webb today as the team hopes to put an end to a season-high five-game losing streak against the Washington Nationals tonight, according to the Sports Network.

Our View:Webb is coming off consecutive losses after winning his fist nine starts of the season. He has six career appearances against Washington with five starts, touting a record of 2-2 with a 3.89 ERA over those performances. However, being home may be the biggest gift of all: The 2006 National League Cy Young winner has won all five of his starts at Chase Field this season, while posting a 3.47 earned run average in those games.
May 26, 2008
Brandon Webb suffered his second loss of the season on Monday, as Arizona was topped by Atlanta 7-3. Webb was rocked for seven runs on 10 hits over a mere 4.1 innings of work, with three walks and eight strikeouts.

Our View:He has now lost back-to-back starts, but should bounce back fine and fantasy owners shouldn't be concerned. He held a 2.69 ERA and exceptional 0.98 WHIP heading into today's battle.
May 21, 2008
Brandon Webb suffered his first loss of the season Wednesday after nine straight wins. The righty pitched well, allowing three runs on six hits and no walks while striking out seven over seven innings, but the D'Backs fell to the Marlins, 3-1.

Our View:Well, it had to come to an end sometime, right?
May 16, 2008
Brandon Webb had another quality start on Thursday as he allowed three runs in 7.1 innings to improve his perfect record to 9-0 with a victory over the Rockies.

Our View:Should we just give him the Cy Young right now? Webb is on some kind of roll right now and tonight he added a season best eight strikeouts to the mix. If you have any hitters who are facing Webb bench them as they aren’t very likely to generate much of anything at the plate.
May 8, 2008
Brandon Webb improved to 8-0 with his 13th career complete game against the Phillies. Webb, who became the first NL pitcher to win his first eight starts since Pedro Martinez in 1997, allowed two earned runs with no walks in nine innings.

Our View:How good is this guy? Others get more publicity, but few can match the sustained level of dominance that Webb has shown the past three plus years. Continue to ride this horse.
May 8, 2008
The Diamondbacks have resumed talks with Brandon Webb on a long-term contract extension, and the sides are getting closer to an agreement, according to the Arizona Republic. Webb said, "Yeah, some progress has been made. We've been talking a little bit more. We've made some headway. We'll see where it goes."

Our View:Webb is 8-0, with a 2.45 ERA and 1.00 WHIP, and the team is wise to want to lock him up for the long-term right now.
May 3, 2008
Brandon Webb improved to 7-0 in Saturday's 10-4 win over the Mets. He allowed four runs on five hits over six innings, with two walks and three strikeouts. Most of the damage came off a three-run homer by Carlos Delgado.

Our View:Webb was named the NL Pitcher of the Month for April, and is off to a strong start in May.
May 3, 2008
Brandon Webb has been named the NL Pitcher of the Month for April, according to MLB.com. Webb went 6-0 with a 1.98 ERA in the month to earn the honor.

Our View:Webb also tied for fourth with 41.0 innings pitched in April, while racking up 34 strikeouts. He currently holds a 1.05 WHIP.
April 27, 2008
Brandon Webb, the 2006 Cy Young winner, allowed just one unearned run and twice escaped bases-loaded jams against the Padres to earn Sunday's win.

Our View:Webb became the first six-game winner in the majors and lowered his ERA to 1.98.
April 23, 2008
In a game of opposites, where Giants' starter Barry Zito is struggling to find wins and control, Arizona starter Brandon Webb picked up his 5th win, sporting a record void of defeat, as the Diamondbacks took the 4-5 win over the San Francisco Giants. Webb pitched six innings, throwing 96 pitches (65 strikes) to allow three runs (all earned) on nine hits.

Our View:More impressively, Webb walked just two batters while striking out seven and allowing just two fly balls, giving him an ERA of 2.31. Webb also needs to be noted for hitting 1-for-2 at the plate with a double and two RBIs and a run scored.
April 16, 2008
Brandon Webb dominated the Giants eight innings to begin a season 4-0 for the first time. Webb allowed three hits, two walks and just one run while striking out five.

Our View:Webb also lowered his ERA to 1.86 as he pounded the strike zone all game with that nasty sinker. Webb has been about as consistent as any NL pitcher the past few years, and he is at the top of his game right now.
April 16, 2008
Brandon Webb will be aiming for a 4-0 start as he takes the hill against the Giants tonight, according to MLB.com. He currently holds a strong 2.14 ERA over 21 innings, with 17 strikeouts.

Our View:The D-Backs ace will duel with lefty Barry Zito, who remains winless at 0-3.
April 11, 2008
Brandon Webb improved to 3-0 on the young season as he scattered four hits over eight innings against the Rockies. Webb continues to dominate the competition with a 2.14 ERA and 0.86 WHIP, and there is no reason to think he will be anything less than a top-10 starting pitcher at the end of the season.
April 5, 2008
Brandon Webb scattered five hits over seven innings to pick up his second victory of the season. Webb allowed only one walk and two runs (one earned) on the night) and now has allowed 13 baserunners over 13 innings. Do you really need us to tell you he is a top-10 hurler? Didn't think so.
March 31, 2008
Brandon Webb pitched six strong innings Monday in a 4-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Webb allowed three runs, two runs, four walks and struck out six.
March 4, 2008
Brandon Webb continues to give fans and fantasy owners optimism for 2008 with another strong outing against the Texas Rangers today, according to ESPN. Webb got eight of his nine outs on groundballs with one strikeout in his second start of spring training. Webb did allow one homer and two earned runs in three innings of work, but the continued ability to influence those ever-popular groundouts is certainly a reason to smile.
March 1, 2008
Brandon Webb pitched two strong innings on Friday despite an upper respiratory infection, this according to the East Valley Tribune. The Diamondbacks' ace needed only 16 pitches in his two innings, facing only six batters. Webb is scheduled to pitch again Tuesday, on three days’ rest, in the D-Backs’ exhibition opener against Texas in Surprise.
