Brandon Webb was named the National League Cy Young winner on Tuesday. Webb was 16-8 with a 3.10 ERA and 1.13 WHIP this season.

Bob Melvin says he isn't considering pulling Brandon Webb from his final scheduled start Sunday in order to keep Webb's numbers where they are to help his Cy Young candidacy, the Arizona Republic reports. A rough outing conceivably could damage Webb's chances of winning the award. "I haven't even looked at that," Melvin said. "It would be more if I felt there was a physical problem with Webby or he's thrown too many innings. But the way he pitched (Tuesday) and the fact he's been extremely healthy since that (elbow) problem he had, I don't see any reason not to (let him pitch) right now."

Brandon Webb will probably get two more starts as he angles for the NL Cy Young Award, compared to one more for Chris Carpenter. The Cardinals' rotation is currently set up for Carpenter to pitch the season finale, but it's doubtful they'll use him then with the playoffs to follow. Webb has a 16-7 record, 2.95 ERA and 167 strikeouts through Thursday's start (seven innings, three runs, tough loss), while Carpenter is at 15-7, 2.93, with 178 strikeouts.

A close friend and college teammate of Brandon Webb's died in a Kentucky plane crash on Sunday, according to the Arizona Republic. He's expected to make his scheduled start tonight, then head to Kentucky on a bereavement leave.
August 12, 2006
Brandon Webb, who was scratched from his last start with elbow soreness, did not have his best stuff on Friday, but he pitched well enough to win. He threw five innings while allowing three runs (two earned) and seven hits and struck out four.
August 9, 2006
The Arizona Republic reports that Brandon Webb tossed 55 pitches -- about 15 more than had been planned -- in a bullpen session yesterday. Afterward, he said he would be ready to start Saturday's game. He missed his scheduled start last weekend due to soreness in his pitching elbow.
August 7, 2006
Brandon Webb is expected to play catch today and toss a bullpen session tomorrow, according to the Arizona Republic. Assuming all goes well with his sore pitching elbow, he should return to the rotation on Friday or Saturday.
August 6, 2006
Brandon Webb is slated to throw a bullpen session on Monday night after which the Diamondbacks will decide whether he's ready to return to the rotation, likely on Friday, according to the Arizona Republic. He missed his scheduled start Saturday due to a sore pitching elbow.
August 5, 2006
As expected, a sore pitching elbow will keep Brandon Webb from making his scheduled start on Saturday, according to the Arizona Republic. At this time, the Diamondbacks appear to be certain that the injury is not serious and simply needs to be rested. Dustin Nippert will start in place of Webb, who would aim to start Friday if he doesn't end up on the disabled list.
August 4, 2006
Brandon Webb will most likely miss his scheduled start Saturday because of a sore right elbow, but it doesn't appear that a trip to the DL is necessary, according to the Arizona Republic. Webb through a good bullpen session Thursday, so it's possible he could still make the start, but the D'Backs may err on the side of caution and call a pitcher up from Triple-A to make a spot start.
August 3, 2006
The Diamondbacks announced that Brandon Webb has been sent back to Phoenix because of soreness in his right elbow. Webb will probably miss his scheduled start on Saturday. An MRI on Wednesday showed no structural damage. "How much we push back, we'll see whether it's just a couple of days or a skip," Diamondbacks general manager Josh Byrnes said. "Saturday is unlikely."
April 27, 2006
With Juan Cruz now slated to start against the Giants on Saturday, Brandon Webb will have his next start bumped back to Sunday. Webb is 3-0 this year with a 2.21 ERA in five starts.
March 13, 2006
The Arizona Republic reports that Brandon Webb has been working in some cut fastballs and is tossing first-pitch breaking balls and mixing in changeups more than ever before. "He's become a little less predictable," manager Bob Melvin said. "In the past, he's been sinker, sinker, sinker, and when he needs to make an adjustment, he goes to something else. . . . You can just tell from his demeanor on the mound right now that he's taking this role, he knows he's No. 1 and is going to pitch like a horse."
January 13, 2006
The Diamondbacks signed Brandon Webb to a contract extension through the 2009 season with a club option for 2010, according to the AP. No financial terms were disclosed. Webb finished with a career-high 14 wins against 12 losses with a 3.54 ERA in 33 starts last season.
