Newsbreakers
December 5, 2008
As expected, the Braves have inked David Ross to a two-year deal, according to the Associated Press. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Our View:Ross won't hold much fantasy value, but will provide adequate depth behind Brian McCann at catcher.
December 3, 2008
David Ross is close to signing with the Braves to back up Brian McCann, according to Fox Sports.

Our View:Ross hit .225 with three home runs and 13 RBI in 60 games. The Red Sox don't look like they're going to bring him back.
November 25, 2008
David Ross is on the Astros' radar, according to the Hot Stove Blog on MLB.com.

Our View:Brad Ausmus isn't returning, and Humberto Quintero and J.R. Towles may not be ready for a full-time role behind the plate. There are six other clubs believed to be interested in Ross as well.
August 29, 2008
Catcher David Ross was called up to take the roster spot of pitcher Josh Beckett, who was put on the disabled list, according to RedSox.com.

Our View:Ross has no fantasy value as the third catcher on the team, behind Jason Varitek and Kevin Cash.
August 21, 2008
The Red Sox have signed David Ross to a minor league deal, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:He will report to Triple-A Pawtucket, and eventually get called up to work as the No. 3 catcher behind Jason Varitek and Kevin Cash. The Sox would need to promote Ross by August 31 to make him eligible for their post-season roster. He will provide solid insurance at the position, but his fantasy value shall remain minimal.
August 20, 2008
The Phillies remain interested in catcher David Ross, but he would not be expected to replace Carlos Ruiz or Chris Coste on the 25-man roster, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. He would likely work at Triple-A Lehigh, and join the Phillies when rosters expand in September.

Our View:The Phillies cannot make a move for Ross until he clears waivers, which takes two business days. Since Ross was released Monday, he could be claimed or clear waivers today. Boston is also reportedly interested in Ross.
August 18, 2008
The Phillies are interested in the recently released David Ross, according to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal.

Our View:Rosenthal speculates that the Phils could add Ross as a replacement for Carlos Ruiz right away, or they could send Ross to Triple-A and then bring him up when rosters expand.
August 10, 2008
David Ross has been designated for assignment, according to the AP. The Reds recalled catcher Ryan Hanigan from Triple-A Louisville as the adjoining move.

Our View:Ross failed to find his power stroke with only three homers over 134 at-bats, and failed to keep his job with a mere .231 batting average.
July 10, 2008
David Ross hit two of the Reds seven home runs on Thursday after entering the game with but a single long ball in 94 games.

Our View:Ross had three hits on the day to boost his average to .265. More telling is the fact that perhaps this will signal a power outburst for a backstop who has hit 38 home runs the past two seasons in just 558 AB.
July 4, 2008
The Florida Marlins are looking into acquiring David Ross from the Cincinnati Reds in a trade, according to the Miami Herald.

Our View:Ross is of no use to fantasy players, but he would provide the Marlins depth behind the plate.
July 1, 2008
Cincinnati catcher David Ross normally does not sit behind the plate when Edinson Volquez is on the mound, but that will change tonight as the Reds face Pittsburgh and LHP Zach Duke, according to MLB.com.

Our View:The right-handed-hitting Ross was favored over lefty Paul Bako, as left-handed hitters are batting just .218 against Duke this season. Righties, meanwhile, are hitting .313. Ross' bat has also come alive as of late. He's hit safely in five of his last six games, including a ninth-inning double on Monday that set up Ken Griffey Jr.'s walk-off home run. Ross has raised his average from .224 to .244 since June 17.
May 28, 2008
The Cincinnati Reds put a hurt on the Pittsburgh Pirates this evening, winning 9-1 in effort led by catcher David Ross . Ross went 2-for-3 with a walk at the dish with his first home run of the season, good for four RBIs on the night.

Our View:Ross has been struggling in limited action this season, but he has gone 10-for-31 through May .
April 23, 2008
David Ross has been activated from the DL, according to the AP. He was recovering from back spasms. The team placed outfielder Norris Hopper on the DL, to make room on the roster for Ross.

Our View:Ross will return to his starting role at catcher, pushing Paul Bako back to the bench as the top backup. Javier Valentin has been used mainly as a pinch-hitter. Ross will hit for a low average and won't generate a strong RBI count, and holds value primarily for his power, as he hit 17 homers over 112 games in 2007.
April 11, 2008
David Ross, in the minors on a rehab assignment because of back spasms, suffered a setback recently with a sore left groin, and as a result he likely won't be activated from the DL on on Tuesday as previously hoped, this according to MLB.com. Javier Valentin and Paul Bako have been holding down the fort with the Reds so there is no urgency to get Ross back in the lineup until he is 100% healthy.
April 9, 2008
David Ross has missed a couple of games on his rehab assignment with a slight leg muscle strain, but he is scheduled to catch Thursday, according to The Cincinnati Enquirer. Ross is eligible to come off the DL on Monday.
April 4, 2008
David Ross headed to Single-A Sarasota on Thursday to begin a rehab assignment, the Cincinnati Enquirer notes. Ross is dealing with back spasms, and we imagine he'll only need 3-5 days before jumping back to the majors.
March 30, 2008
The Reds placed catcher David Ross on the 15-day disabled list Saturday. Ross is suffering from lower back spasms and missed the majority of spring work. Ross will see some Triple-A at-bats before returning to the starting lineup. Expect Paul Bako and Javier Valentin to share time in Ross' absence.
March 28, 2008
It looks like David Ross has a good shot at being ready for the start of the season and avoiding the disabled list, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. He was able to work Wednesday night's game and follow that up with seven innings in Thursday's afternoon contest. Ross has been out with back spasms, and so long as he makes it through the weekend without a setback, he should be ready for the regular season.
March 24, 2008
Though the club hasn't made it official, it appears almost certain that David Ross will begin the year on the DL because of back spasms, this according to MLB.com. "He's closer," Baker said. "The one thing we want to make sure is if he's not going to be ready, you don't want to waste a DL spot." If Ross begins the year on the DL, the team will go with Javier Valentin with Paul Bako serving as the backup. This is a big year for Ross as the team loves his power (he had 17 HR in 311 AB last year), but he needs to improve on his horrible .203 batting average to become a fantasy force.
March 22, 2008
David Ross has missed all 18 spring exhibition games for the Reds, and his opening day status is in question, this according to Fox Sports. When asked if Ross would be active for the team's opening game, manager Dusty Baker raised his eyebrows and paused for a long time. "It is going to real tough on him," Baker said. "He hasn't done any hitting or squatting. He has to get his at-bats for his timing and also his timing for catching." Expect Ross to begin the season on the disabled list.
March 18, 2008
The Cincinnati Enquirer's John Fay reported a rumor that the Reds are actively seeking help at catcher, because of growing concerns about David Ross and his ailing back. Ross hasn't played in three weeks due to the ailment, and his .203 batting average last season isn't exactly appetizing, either. Fay also said the club would gladly deal Ryan Freel and may be showcasing him as a utilityman by playing him some in the infield. The trouble is that Freel's owed $7 million over the next two seasons, so there may not be a lot of interest.
March 14, 2008
David Ross hopes to be able to hit on Friday, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. He was able to catch Thursday without any problems. Ross is battling back spasms and has yet to take part in an exhibition game this spring.
March 7, 2008
David Ross is expected to miss at least another three or four days due to his back spasms, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. "He's making progress," manager Dusty Baker said. "But it's two steps forward, one step back. They're trying to eliminate and alleviate it altogether. (Back problems) are tough when you're trying to swing and catch." While the Reds say they're just being cautious to keep this from lingering into the regular season, Ross already has missed nine days because of the ailment, so it's clearly become somewhat of a concern.
March 1, 2008
David Ross hasn't played in a spring game yet due to a sore back, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. "We're going to give him another day, just in case, another day before he starts hitting," manager Dusty Baker said. "Back spasms, they let go when they want to and they can grab you when they want to. We want to make sure it subsides." Right now, this sounds like just a minor early spring ailment that shouldn't affect his status for the regular season.
