Newsbreakers
September 7, 2008
Hernandez has been suspended 50 games by Major League Baseball for testing positive for amphetimines, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View:Hernandez has had trouble returning to glory since early-career success with Kansas City. He made four starts for Houston this season and posted a 8.38 ERA. He will serve the 50-game suspension at the beginning of next season.
July 28, 2008
Runelvys Hernandez has been sent down to Triple-A following four poor starts with the Astros. He had a 8.38 ERA and a 2.22 WHIP while going 0-3.

Our View:He was sent down to make room for pitcher Roy Oswalt. If Oswalt were to go down yet again, he may get another chance to get hammered with the big league club.
July 19, 2008
The Astros recalled Runelvys Hernandez from Triple-A Round Rock Saturday to replace the injured Roy Oswalt on the DL.

Our View:Hernandez will start on Monday against the Pirates. He holds an ugly 10.29 ERA in three starts this year.
July 18, 2008
Runelvys Hernandez will be recalled from Triple-A Round Rock in order to make the start on Monday against Pittsburgh, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Hernandez has an unseemly 10.29 ERA in three starts this season and should not be considered for fantasy play.
July 9, 2008
Runelvys Hernandez has been sent down to Triple-A Round Rock, according to the Houston Chronicle. The team recalled reliever Chad Reineke as the adjoining move.

Our View:He was actually pleased to be sent down, as he expected to be waived after allowing 13 hits and 10 runs over a mere four innings on Tuesday against the Pirates.
July 7, 2008
Runelvys Hernandez allowed 10 runs on 13 hits, walked four and struck out three in four innings of work on Monday night against the Pirates. The right-hander suffered his third loss of the season without a win.

Our View:Long before the season started most in the know, knew, the weak link of the Houston team would be starting pithing. As the Astros begin their fade in the NL Central the pitching has be, and will be, their continuing downfall.
July 2, 2008
Runelvys Hernandez allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits over five innings in Wednesday's 4-1 loss to the Dodgers, with two walks and four strikeouts.

Our View:Hernandez is 0-2 as a starter, and gave up six earned runs over 10 innings of work. He should not be considered for your fantasy rotation.
March 26, 2008
Runelvys Hernandez was reassigned to minor league camp on Wednesday, according to MLB.com.
March 16, 2008
Runelvys Hernandez has been informed by manager Cecil Cooper that he is no longer in the running for a spot in the Astros' starting rotation, according to MLB.com. Hernandez, a non-roster invitee, will instead compete for a bullpen job. "He's out of the picture as a starter," Cooper said. "I just told him, 'Look, the performance we saw [on Saturday] and what I've seen in the past, it just wasn't what we thought it would be.' We just don't have the innings to keep things going, so we want to give him an opportunity in the bullpen. He might fit in there." Hernandez has allowed 11 earned runs over 10 1/3 innings this spring over four outings. He has given up three homer and walked seven while striking out five. This only adds to frustrations already felt throughout the pitching staff in Houston. Beyond Roy Oswalt, the rest of the starting rotation is aging and/or questionable. Adding to the bullpen is a nice option to bring Hernandez along as he has the arm to make it work in the show, but the lack of progress is concerning, both for the team and the individual.
March 5, 2008
Runelvys Hernandez allowed one run and four hits in 2.1 innings of work on Wednesday for the Astros. Hernandez is trying to prove he belongs at the major league level a year after he was one of the worst pitchers in baseball (6.48 ERA, 1.76 WHIP). With a solid spring he could make the bullpen, but even then, he is best left on waivers.
