Newsbreakers
December 11, 2008
The Rockies have garnered interest in Mets' reliever Luis Ayala, according to the Denver Post.

Our View:The righty reliever lost 10 games last season, with a poor 1.45 WHIP for the season. He would only be worth employing near the back of the Rockies' bullpen.
September 24, 2008
Luis Ayala lost his 10th game of the season on Wednesday night when the Mets fell to the Cubs 9-6 in 10 innings. The default closer threw two innings and gave up three runs on three hits.

Our View:And the bullpen woes continue for the Mets. Ayala threw a perfect ninth but did not have anything during the second inning of his appearance. It was the first time he threw more than an inning since August 13th when he did it with the Nationals - against the Mets.
September 15, 2008
Luis Ayala will remain the Mets closer, manager Jerry Manuel informs the New York Post. Ayala blew a save against the Braves on Sunday by allowing three runs without recording a single out. The reliever will be on a short leash moving forward.

Our View:The Mets don't exactly have other closer-worthy arms piling up in the bullpen, so Manuel is in a tough spot. Ayala will maintain a bit of fantasy value as long as he's in line to get saves.
September 14, 2008
Ayala picked up his sixth blown save and ninth loss of the season on Sunday, allowing three runs on three hits in the ninth inning and failing to record an out.

Our View:Simply horrendous. Ayala hadn't allowed a run in his previous six appearances, so the Mets may not pull the plug on his save chances just yet.
September 1, 2008
Luis Ayala pitched a clean inning on Monday to pick up his fourth save of the season for the Mets.

Our View:Ayala hasn't walked a batter in eight innings with the Mets, but he also has only four strikeouts. Still, he has been as effective as any other option the Mets have in the pen right now so he will continue to pick up the save chances until Billy Wagner returns.
August 27, 2008
Luis Ayala pitched a perfect ninth inning Wednesday. He collected his second save as the Mets beat the Phillies 6-3.

Our View:Ayala is now 2-for-3 in save opportunities for the Mets. Look for him to continue to see save opportunities with Billy Wagner missing more time.
August 23, 2008
According to the New York Journal News, when asked if Luis Ayala was now his closer, manager Jerry Manuel replied, "If that opportunity comes up again tonight I wouldn't hesitate to go with him again."

Our View:Manuel has refused to name a closer while Billy Wagner is out, but this is pretty close. Ayala picked up the save Friday and has pitched three scoreless innings since arriving in New York.

Updating a previous report, the Mets have acquired Luis Ayala from the Nationals for a player to be named, according to the AP. To make room on the roster, the Mets transferred Moises Alou to the 60-day DL.

Our View:The Mets coveted a reliever and Ayala fills that need. His fantasy value will be low as a middle reliever, though. It remains to be seen if the "player to be named" is infielder Anderson Hernandez, who was previously believed to be part of the deal.
August 17, 2008
Newsday indicates that the Mets are close to finalizing a deal that would send infielder Anderson Hernandez to the Nationals in exchange for Luis Ayala

Our View:The Mets covet a reliever and Ayala would help fill their need. His fantasy value would be low as a middle reliever, however.
July 31, 2008
The Mets badly want a reliever, and Luis Ayala is on their radar, according to SI's Jon Heyman.

Our View:Ayala has been very good in the past but it's hard to imagine him representing much of an upgrade given how he's pitched this year (1-6, 5.54 ERA, 1.49 WHIP).
July 24, 2008
Luis Ayala picked up his fourth blown save of the year and his sixth loss of the season by allowing the Giants to score three times in the bottom of the eighth inning on Wednesday night.

Our View:Let those who question the move to trade Jon Rauch start to complain. Ayala will have to play a significant role in the pen now, and given his 5.77 ERA and WHIP of 1.53, that could certainly be viewed as a negative outcome of a suddenly thin bullpen situation.
May 11, 2008
Luis Ayala's tough May continued on Sunday. The reliever served up three hits and three runs over one inning against the Nationals. Ayala gave up two homers and took the loss. He has allowed nine runs in his last five appearances.

Our View:Ayala was solid earlier in the year, and the Nats can't afford to have him break down alongside Chad Cordero. This recent work is quite worrisome.
February 22, 2008
Luis Ayala said he's progressively gotten better since being hit by a shotgun pellet in December and is ready to pitch, according to the Washington Post. Ayala said he felt intense pain and numbness in his fingers for the first couple of weeks. The pellet remains lodged in his left shoulder, but hopefully it won't irritate the nerve in the joint again.
January 4, 2008
Luis Ayala suffered a bruised nerve in his upper forearm when he was hit by a shotgun pellet during a hunting trip. However, the reliever has no artery damage and the nerve is intact, and he's expected to participate fully in spring training, according to the AP. Ayala was solid last year in his return from Tommy John surgery, posting a 3.19 ERA in 44 games.
