Newsbreakers
October 6, 2008
J.P. Howell worked 1.1 scoreless innings in Game 4 to run his line in the ALDS to 4.1 innings with two hits allowed, six strikeouts and nary a run allowed.

Our View:Howell, who posted the third best regular season ERA of any hurler who threw at least 80 innings, baffled White Sox hitters all series long with solid stuff and excellent control.
October 3, 2008
J.P. Howell was exceptional out of the bullpen for the second straight game against the White Sox in the ALDS. He lasted two innings and struck out three while only allowing one hit.

Our View:That marks his second hold in as many nights. Howell's stuff was nasty as he was able to cut his fastball in and out and often baffled the White Sox hitters...and apparently the umpire. Howell benefitted from a number of favorable calls.
August 23, 2008
J.P. Howell is feeling better after his heavy workload has been lightened, according to the Tampa Tribune. He said, "I was getting back spasms, leg cramps, one day it was one thing, the next day another. I could feel it a couple weeks ago, little things just popping up, and I kind of hit a wall and decided to just cut back. It's my first time in this territory." After some much needed rest (about a week) he said, "I'm just glad to be rested up, man. It was definitely a learning experience."

Our View:This is encouraging news for one of the league's best middle relievers. He holds a 6-0 record (with two saves) over 69.2 innings, with 72 strikeouts and a 1.22 WHIP.
June 26, 2008
J.P. Howell doesn't have a big name, and he is available in many fantasy leagues, but his production this year has been substantial, according to MLB.com. Howell is 6-0 leaving him just one win short of the club record for relievers while his ratios are sterling (2.90 ERA, 1.09 WHIP).

Our View:Wins can't be counted on with relievers, but Howell has still been a valuable reliever, especially when you toss in his K potential (45 in 49.2 IP). He warrants a look in deep mixed leagues to be sure.
May 11, 2008
J.P. Howell pitched three scoreless innings in relief of starter Andy Sonnanstine to get his second win of the season as the Rays scored a 8-5 victory over the Angels.

Our View:Howell made his 11th appearance of the season. He has pitched 24 innings this year allowing 19 hits, walking nine and striking out 22.
