Young hurlers Edinson Volquez and Johnny Cueto will not be going anywhere, as they will not be traded, said Reds general manager Walt Jocketty, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View:The two are likely to be brought up in any trade discussions with the Reds, but you simply can't trade young pitching anymore. Jocketty likely learned his lesson after his horrific trade of Dan Haren and Daric Barton for Mark Mulder in St. Louis.
September 27, 2008
The Reds got good news on Saturday about Edinson Volquez's knee. An MRI showed that Volquez is suffering from tendinitis, according to the Reds' official web site.

Our View:What a year for Volquez who burst onto the scene with 17 wins and 206 strike outs in 196 innings. Volquez will be one of the top 10 pitchers taken in drafts in 2009.
September 24, 2008
Edinson Volquez will be scratched from his final start of the season to rest his right knee according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Adam Pettyjohn will start in his place.

September 23, 2008
Edinson Volquez got win No. 17 Tuesday, limiting the Astros to just one run on six hits and a walk while striking out nine over 7 1/3 innings.

Our View:A 3.21 ERA, 17 wins and 208 strikeouts. Not bad for a late-round flyer, eh?
September 18, 2008
Edinson Volquez only allowed four runs on three hits in seven innings but took the loss in the Reds' 5-4 defeat.

Our View:Thursday's loss was the first for Volquez in eight starts. If he was on a better team Volquez might be getting some more pub for the NL Cy Young. Fantasy owners who selected Volquez found a diamond in the rough.
September 13, 2008
Edinson Volquez only allowed two earned runs on five hits over six innings in Saturday's 3-2 win over Arizona, with six walks and eight strikeouts. He exited the game with a 1-1 tie and was dealt a no decision.

Our View:Other than the six walks, it was another solid outing for him. He remains 16-5, and has not suffered a loss in seven straight starts.
September 8, 2008
Edinson Volquez had 10 strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work in a no-decision against the Brewers on Monday night. He allowed four runs on five hits as the Reds would go on to defeat the Brewers 5-4.

Our View:Volquez's monster season continues as he shows no signs of slowing down. Look for this youngster to be a force for years to come.
September 3, 2008
Edinson Volquez had 13 strikeouts in Wednesday no-decision against the Pirates. Despite the strong performance the Reds fell to the Pirates 6-5.

Our View:Volquez's monster season continues as he shows no signs of slowing down. Look for this youngster to be a force for years to come.
August 29, 2008
Edinson Volquez issued six earned runs on eight hits over 5.1 innings in Friday's 11-7 win over the Giants at the Great American Ballpark, with three walks and six strikeouts.

Our View:He suffered through a poor outing, but still claimed his 16th win of the season thanks to strong run support. He finished August with a 3-1 mark.
August 20, 2008
Edinson Volquez and Kyle Lohse exchanged pitches high and tight, but Lohse was the one that got suspended for five games. The punishment seemed to surprise Reds manager Dusty Baker, according to Reds.com. "Five games and they didn't even kick him out of the game. Wow. The umpires don't kick him out but the league suspends him. That's a first, isn't it? I haven't seen that," said Baker.

Our View:Lohse got suspended, even though Volquez actually hit Cardinals infielder Felipe Lopez later in the game. Not to mention that the pitch Lohse threw to Volquez was a strike, as it hit his bat. Lohse has appealed his suspension.
August 19, 2008
Edinson Volquez will not throw on Friday in Colorado when his turn in the rotation comes, according to the Dayton Daily News. The team simply wants to give Volquez an extra day of rest, and he will be in line to start on Saturday.

Our View:Volquez has been a gem for fantasy owners, who should not mind the Reds doing their part to keep the young right-hander healthy.
August 17, 2008
Edinson Volquez hurled seven scoreless innings, with only three hits allowed, in Sunday's 7-3 win over the Cardinals, with four walks and four strikeouts.

Our View:Other than the four free passes, he was dominant. He improves to 15-5, and has only issued one earned run over his last 13.2 innings (two starts).
August 12, 2008
Edinson Volquez won his 14th game of the year by throwing 6.2 innings, allowing one run and striking out five in the Reds 5-1 win over Pittsburgh.

Our View:Volquez had been shaky as of late, as his ERA had gone up every month of the season. This was a solid performance though, and maybe he'll get back on track.
August 8, 2008
With the return of Aaron Harang on Sunday, Edinson Volquez will have his start pushed back to Tuesday, though he says talk of his being tired is overblown, according to MLB.com. "I feel good," he said. "I threw a good bullpen [session] today, and I feel like I can pitch."

Our View:Volquez has fallen on some hard times of late with an ERA approaching six in his last eight starts, but he is still on pace for 18 victories and 197 K, and those are startling numbers for a youngster with no major league success prior to the start of this season.
August 5, 2008
Reds RHP Edinson Volquez suffered through one of his worst outings of the season tonight, taking the 8-1 loss against the Brewers. Volquez pitched just five innings, allowing five runs (all earned) on nine hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Our View:Volquez moves to 13-5 on the season with a 2.93 ERA. That's two losses over his last three starts, and while the shorter outings have been an issue all season long, the lack of progress in working later in games is concerning.
July 30, 2008
Edinson Volquez improved to 13-4 on the year by holding the Astros to just a single earned run over 6.1 innings. Volquez did give up five runs on the night but he also only walked one in the outing.

Our View:This was the third straight game that Edinson has allowed four or more runs, and it was also his second straight game with two home runs allowed. He certainly isn't the pitcher he was earlier in the year, but there is no shame in that since there have been very few pitchers who were that dominating at any point in the past 20 years.
July 25, 2008
Reds right-handed sensation Edinson Volquez went through his second bad outing in a row, giving up five runs in four innings while throwing 99 pitches.

Our View:Volquez's ERA as gone from 2.08 on July 1 to 2.77, and he is clearly not what he was at the beginning of the season.
July 20, 2008
It hasn't happened often, but Cincinnati RHP Edinson Volquez suffered through a horrific outing on the mound as his Reds fell 7-5 to the Mets. Volquez allowed four runs (all earned) on eight hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

Our View:Put the official warning light on for those fearing the All-Star Game has ruined yet another arm. Volquez walked with no-decision, but the outing ranks as his worth since June 26th, one of just three losses on the season.
July 15, 2008
Edinson Volquez was hit hard in his All-Star Game debut, allowing a double to Justin Morneau and a home run to J.D. Drew in his one inning of work. He also struck out two batters.

Our View:Volquez has been dealing this season, but he was hurt by two power-hitting left-handed bats.
July 13, 2008
Edinson Volquez will not be the National League starter for the All-Star Game, according to MLB.com. Volquez threw 114 pitches in Saturday's game.

Our View:Volquez certainly deserved to be considered for the honor considering the season he is having. He may still throw an inning in the game, however.
July 12, 2008
Cincinnati RHP Edinson Volquez put yet another strong outing on the mound this evening, helping his Reds to the dominating 8-2 win over the Brewers. Volquez pitched seven innings, allowing just two runs (one earned) on six hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts.

Our View:Volquez now stands at 12-3 on the season with an impressive ERA of 2.29, though this is his first win over his last four starts.
July 6, 2008
Edinson Volquez allowed three earned runs on five hits over six innings in Sunday's close 6-5 win over the Nationals, with three walks and three strikeouts.

Our View:Volquez improves to 11-3 with a 2.36 ERA. He was winless over his previous two starts.
July 1, 2008
Edinson Volquez surrendered three earned runs on seven hits over 5.1 innings in Tuesday's 6-5 loss to the Pirates, with three walks and three strikeouts. He ended his outing with a no decision, and the game took 11 innings to decide.

Our View:Volquez has allowed eight earned runs over his last two starts. Now is a good time to try and steal him away for a reduced price before he gets back on track and generates strong numbers again.
June 26, 2008
Edinson Volquez suffered his third loss of the season, lasting just 4.1 innings in the Reds 7-1 loss to Toronto. Volquez allowed seven runs, five of them earned, which raised his ERA to over 2.00 for the first time this season.

Our View:This was easily Volquez's worst outing of the year, and the only one he has given up more than three earned runs. The 24-year-old was clearly off, as he failed to strike out anybody for the first time this season. Volquez was bound to have a clunker at some point, but it shouldn't be anything to worry about.
June 20, 2008
Edinson Volquez won his 10th game of the season on Friday by holding the Yankees to just two runs over seven innings for the Reds. Volquez walked only one batter while striking out five Yanks on the evening.

Our View:Somebody stop this guy. Volquez continues to be just about the best story on the hill in baseball this year as he now owns a 1.71 ERA after 15 starts. Truly amazing.
June 20, 2008
Edinson Volquez will be in action tonight against the Yankees in the Bronx, according to MLB.com. Volquez is 9-2 with a strong 1.64 ERA and 1.17 WHIP over 88 innings, with 105 strikeouts.

Our View:He has allowed two or less earned runs in 14 of 15 starts, and has reached at least eight strikeouts seven times.
June 14, 2008
Cincinnati RHP Edinson Volquez hit the mound today and pitched another gem for his Reds, and once again the team failed to support his cause with proper relief pitching, falling 6-4 to Boston. Volquez lasted seven innings, surrendering three runs (two earned (on seven hits) with one walk and nine strikeouts.

Our View:Edinson now carries an ERA of 1.64 with just three home runs surrendered through 15 starts.
June 9, 2008
Edinson Volquez allowed three runs for the first time all year Monday but still won his ninth game of the season. The righty gave up three hits and five walks while striking out five.

Our View:Well, we guess Volquez was due for a "bad" start. In all seriousness, the 24-year-old is probably due for a rough patch shortly, so selling high on him might not be a bad idea.
June 4, 2008
Cincinnati RHP Edinson Volquez was strong off the hill in support of the 2-0 win over the Phillies this evening. Volquez pitched seven innings of shutout baseball, allowing just two hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Our View:This bring Volquez to a dominating 1.32 ERA on the season and is now 4-1 over his last seven starts.
May 25, 2008
It boggles in the mind, but on an evening that laid witness to the Reds pushing 10 different pitchers to the mound in an 18-inning marathon with the San Diego Padres, RHP Edinson Volquez walked off the mound with the loss.

Our View:Volquez came in after fellow starter Aaron Harang completed four shutout innings, worked one inning without issue, and then surrendered the walk-off home run to Adrian Gonzalez in the bottom of the 18th for the loss. Volquez finished with 1 2/3 innings pitched with one walk, two strikeouts, and just his second loss of the season.
May 24, 2008
The legend of Edinson Volquez continues to grow. The rookie recorded his sixth quality piece of work in ten starts this season and he still hasn't allowed more than two earned runs in a start.

Our View:Volquez found out what it would be like to throw his home games in PETCO instead of Great American Park on Friday night. His ERA is now 1.34 and his K/9 is a ridiculous 11.04. One would be hard pressed to find a rookie pitcher that had a 4.77 BB/9 ratio with a 1.21 WHIP after 10 starts in the history of the league.
May 23, 2008
The Reds wasted another stellar outing by youngster Edinson Volquez Friday, as the righty allowed just one run on two hits and two walks while striking out a career-high 12 in six innings. Volquez left with a lead, which the bullpen gave up.

Our View:Volquez's ERA actually went up to 1.34 with this effort. All 10 of his starts this year have been terrific, and he now has 74 Ks in 60 1/3 frames.
May 18, 2008
Cincinnati RHP Edinson Volquez picked up his team-leading seventh win of the season today, going six innings to allow just two runs (both earned) on four hits with four walks and five strikeouts.

May 13, 2008
Edinson Volquez improved to 6-1 thanks to holding the Marlins to a single run in six innings. Volquez also allowed seven hits and two walks while striking out five.

Our View:With a fastball/changeup combo that makes him look like a right-handed Johan Santana, Volquez continues his march to the all-star game, an amazing statement to make for a guy who was 3-11 record and 7.20 ERA in his career before this season.
May 7, 2008
Edinson Volquez earned his fifth win of the season on Wednesday afternoon with a 9-0 win over the Chicago Cubs. The rookie struck out 10 while lowering his ERA to 1.04, best in the National League.

Our View:The right-handed rookie is garnering accolades from players and coaches around the league for his high 90s fastball and the maturity he's shown in his first full season.
May 2, 2008
Edinson Volquez failed to win his fifth straight game in a 2-0 loss to the Braves on Friday night. The right-hander allowed two runs on five hits in six innings of work. He struck out nine and walked two.

Our View:One of the runs Volquez allowed was unearned and he finished the Friday loss with a 1.27 ERA. A very good outing for the Reds' rookie, but without any run support he was never in a position to receive a win.
April 28, 2008
While Johnny Cueto was the hot topic during March drafts, Edinson Volquez has been the most impressive of the two rookies. Volquez improved to 4-0 on Saturday and has a 1.23 ERA in April after seven strong innings against the Triple-A Giants.

Our View:While Cueto has complete command of his arsenal, he's subject to giving up the long ball. Volquez has turned from avoiding contact to essentially being a groundball pitcher. With a GB Rate approaching 60%, he will have much more success at Great American than his rookie teammate.
April 27, 2008
Edinson Volquez struck out a career-high 10 over seven innings in Sunday's 10-1 win over the Giants. It is Volquez's fourth April win.

Our View:Volquez allowed one run and five hits to win his third consecutive start.

Cincinnati RHP Edinson Volquez picked up his third win of the season and remains unbeaten after four starts as the Reds put a 1-8 whipping on the LA Dodgers. Volquez pitched 7 full innings, allowing just one run on three hits while walking just four and striking out seven.

Our View:Of the 26 batters faced, VOlquez allowed just one fly ball and now has 23 strike outs versus just 13 walks on the season.
April 11, 2008
Edinson Volquez had another solid outing for the Reds on Friday as he allowed just three hits and no runs over five innings against the Pirates. Volquez now has a 0.87 ERA over 10.1 innings, and though he has nine K overall he had just one punchout on this night.
April 7, 2008
Edinson Volquez struck out eight in 5.1 innings on Sunday, the second time during the homestand a young Reds pitcher made a good first impression. Rookie Johnny Cueto had one of the best big league debuts in franchise history Wednesday, striking out 10 in seven innings of a 3-2 victory over Arizona.
April 6, 2008
Edinson Volquez is set to make his first start for the Reds today as they battle the Phillies, according to the Sports Network. The 24-year old Volquez was acquired by the Reds in a December 21 trade that sent Josh Hamilton to the Rangers. He has appeared in 20 Major League games over three seasons, going 3-11 with a 7.20 ERA in 80 innings.
March 26, 2008
Edinson Volquez will open the season as the Reds No. 5 starter, the Cincinnati Enquirer notes. The 24-year-old right-hander has had a strong spring after coming over in the Josh Hamilton trade. He didn't pan out in his three brief major league stints with the Rangers, but we have higher hopes with the Reds. At the least, Volquez has become an interesting keeper league candidate.
March 25, 2008
Edinson Volquez enjoyed another strong showing on Tuesday as he only allowed one run on five hits over five innings of work against Philadelphia, with one walk and five strikeouts. He improved his record to 2-0 and lowered his ERA to 2.70.
March 16, 2008
The Reds continue to express pleasure with RHP Edinson Volquez who has been a shining light in spring training and once again looked solid in Cincy’s loss to Philadelphia (6-2) in the Grapefruit League today. Volquez allowed just three hits and one walk in five scoreless innings. In one of the more open and competitive rotation battles in the majors this season, Volquez has made his mark and seems well on his way to making noise in the show. “Volquez was awesome,” said manager Dusty Baker, speaking about the hurler after today’s loss. “It was an awesome display. Their hitters were talking. They couldn’t pick up his pitches. He is just what the scouts said he was when they traded (Josh) Hamilton for him.” Those are strong votes of confidence from a man that has seen far too many pitchers go south to throw around such words with ease, and it appears this kid needs to be tracked moving forward.
March 10, 2008
Edinson Volquez had a fantastic outing on Monday as he punched out eight Yankees on Monday night, this according to MLB.com. "Volquez threw the ball very well -- he's throwing the ball great," manager Dusty Baker said. Volquez allowed two runs and six hits in four innings, but all those punchouts are what everyone will be talking about.
March 5, 2008
Edinson Volquez was the winning pitcher for the Reds on Wednesday as he allowed four hits and one walk in 2.1 innings. Though he allowed too many baserunners, he didn't allow the Red Sox to push any runs across the plate. Volquez is in a heated battle for the Reds fifth rotation spot, so the fact that he was able to work around the baserunners he allowed today has to be seen in a very positive light with the Reds brass.
February 29, 2008
Edinson Volquez was so close to having a terrific spring debut, but things went sour quickly. The righty retired the first five batters he faced in order, but then he hit the Rays' Jonny Gomes with a pitch and ended up allowing three runs on two hits and a walk over 1 2/3 frames. Volquez is shooting for a rotation spot, but the only rotation he'll be in is Louisville's if he keeps this up.
February 19, 2008
The Reds plan on letting five guys compete for the final two spots in the rotation. Homer Bailey has to be considered a heavy favorite for one of the spots, but he'll have to hold off Edinson Volquez, Johnny Cueto Jeremy Affeldt and Matt Maloney. Volquez, acquired from Texas in the Josh Hamilton trade, threw for the first time Monday. "He needs to work on his off-speed stuff," Jose Valentin, who caught Volquez,. said in the Cincinnati Enquirer. "It was his first day. Maybe he was trying to impress. But he's got a good arm. His fastball moves. He's got a real live arm. That's what you need. Put him in the bullpen or whatever."
