Newsbreakers
September 30, 2008
Joey Devine, who ended the season with a 0.59 the second lowest in baseball history for a hurler with 40 innings pitched, Buck O'Brien had a 0.38 mark in 1911, may or may not end up as the A's closer in 2009, according to the The Mercury News. "The idea that you have three guys that can pitch the ninth inning and that at some point all three might, I actually think that's a great way to run a bullpen," GM Billy Beane said.

Our View:The two others involved in the mix are obviously Huston Street and Brad Ziegler, and though Devine wasn't in the mix this season with only one save, he would appear to be operating with the best stuff of the trio at this point.
September 21, 2008
Joey Devine picked up his first save of the season on Sunday working a scoreless inning against the Mariners.

Our View:On this day Devine closed and was set up by Brad Ziegler, a reversal of the roles the players have filled for the past month or so. Though Zielger set the world on fire with his scoreless inning streak of 39.1 innings, it is Devine who is currently working on the scoreless streak having failed to permit a run in 21.2 innings since the All-Star break.
September 14, 2008
Joey Devine pitched a scoreless eighth inning on Sunday to puck up his sixth win of the year for the Athletics.

Our View:In 19 appearances since the All-Star break, Devine has 17 K in 18.2 innings without allowing a single run (that's a 0.00 ERA folks). Toss in a 0.54 WHIP and you simply have one of the most dominating relievers in the AL at the moment.
September 9, 2008
Joey Devine pitched a spotless seventh inning and improved to 5-1 with a win over the Tigers on Tuesday. The reliever has allowed only two hits over his last 15.2 innings.

Our View:Devine remains in a setup role, but it'll be interesting to see what happens over the offseason and into next spring. Huston Street, Brad Ziegler, and Devine may all end up competing for the ninth inning role in 2009 - even though Ziegler currently holds the spot.
July 27, 2008
Joey Devine, who is recovering from an elbow strain, will pitch at Triple-A Sacramento on Monday and Thursday, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View:Barring a setback, it is possible he can be activated from the DL next weekend. Also worth noting, if Huston Street is traded, Devine would be a top candidate to inherit the closer's role.
July 23, 2008
Joey Devine hopes to return to action some time next week from his elbow strain, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:As important as that news is the fact that the Chronicle speculated that if the A's do move Huston Street in a deal that it would be Devine who would take over ninth inning duties. For those of you who like to speculate, you'll want to keep that in mind.
July 22, 2008
Joey Devine, who is recovering from right elbow inflammation, will throw a simulated game Wednesday or Friday, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View:Barring a setback, he is then expected to head on a rehab assignment and he could be activated from the DL by the end of next week.
July 21, 2008
Joey Devine, who is recovering from right elbow inflammation, threw 35 pitches in a side session on Sunday that involved hitters standing at the plate but not swinging, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View:Devine will throw a simulated game at Tampa Bay on Tuesday and then go on a rehab assignment.
July 20, 2008
Joey Devine, who is recovering from right elbow inflammation, will throw to hitters in a side session today (they will stand in the box but won't swing), according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View:Devine expects to throw a simulated game at Tampa Bay, likely on Tuesday. He will go on a rehab assignment after that, barring a setback.
July 9, 2008
Joey Devine, who is recovering from a strained elbow, made 45 throws from a distance of 120 feet and he could be throwing off the mound again soon, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View:Devine still hopes to return to the Athletics' bullpen right after the All-Star break.
July 8, 2008
Joey Devine, who is recovering from right elbow inflammation, made 30 throws at a distance of 100 feet Monday, according to the SF Chronicle. He said he quickly will be back throwing at a distance of 200 feet and then working off the mound.

Our View:Devine still hopes to return to Oakland's bullpen right after the All-Star break.
July 6, 2008
Joey Devine experienced inflammation in his right elbow on Saturday, and his rehab will be stalled for about a week, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View:The team was hoping he could throw a simulated game Sunday prior to suffering the setback.
July 2, 2008
Joey Devine had a successful mound session on Monday and will begin pitching simulated innings as early as Sunday, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:Devine had an incredible 11.45 K:BB ratio before being bothered by his elbow. He is worth keeping an eye on once he returns both in AL only leagues and deep leagues. If the A's become sellers at the deadline and move Huston Street, Devine would be in line to pick up saves for the A's.
June 25, 2008
Joey Devine (elbow strain) extended his long tossing to 200 feet on Tuesday and he could be throwing off the mound in the next few days, this according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:The Giants reliever will likely head on a rehab assignment toward the end of next week and barring a setback return to the Giants bullpen within two weeks.
June 14, 2008
Joey Devine will begin playing catch on Saturday, a first step in a return from right elbow inflammation, the Oakland Tribune notes.

Our View:Assuming all goes well, we imagine the promising reliever could return in a couple weeks.
June 12, 2008
Joey Devine, who is recovering from an elbow strain, said he isn't scheduled to visit Dr. James Andrews in Alabama for a second opinion, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View:But Andrews will look at all of Devine's medical information and decide if a visit is warranted. Devine was pain free for the second day in a row and he said he hopes to be allowed to throw Saturday.
June 3, 2008
Joey Devine, who is nursing a strained ulnar collateral ligament, said that he is feeling much better, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View:Devine is hoping to be allowed to play some light catch today. Devine earned three wins and held a 1.23 ERA and 1.05 WHIP over 22 innings, with 28 strikeouts, and this is favorable news.
May 30, 2008
Reliever Joey Devine has been placed on the 15-day DL due to right elbow inflammation, according to the AP.

Our View:Devine earned three wins and held a 1.23 ERA and 1.05 WHIP over 22 innings, with 28 strikeouts. The team already lost fellow setup man Santiago Casilla, and this is a very tough loss for the Athletics' pen.
May 15, 2008
Joey Devine picked up four outs on Thursday, three via the strikeout, to lower his ERA to 0.55 on the year.

Our View:Devine now has 20 K and just three BB on the year. Combined with Santiago Casilla's 0.93 ERA over 19.1 innings, and the A's have two excellent setup men in front of Huston Street.
April 10, 2008
Joey Devine was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento to replace the disabled Rich Harden. Devine will fill the relief role of Lenny DiNardo who is expected to start for Harden on Saturday.
March 18, 2008
The A's officially optioned Joey Devine to Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday after informing him of the planned move the day prior, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He was slowed earlier this month by back spasms but should be recalled in the not-to-distant future.
March 6, 2008
Joey Devine, out the past couple of days because of back spasms, threw no Wednesday on the sidelines and could see game action on Saturday, this according to MLB.com. Devine figures to be little more than an arm in the A's bullpen early in the year, but if the team end's up trading Huston Street as has been rumored, Devine could find himself in the closers role for the rebuilding A's.
March 2, 2008
Joey Devine will sit out a few days because of back spasms, according to the AP. He's yet to appear in a game this spring but has a good chance to make the roster as a setup man if he pitches well.
February 28, 2008
The San Jose Mercury News reports, that Joey Devine, who was acquired in a trade with Atlanta looked sharp in his one inning work on Wednesday. He threw fastballs past Richie Robnett and Wes Bankston, both for called third strikes. Devine, who is playing for a bad A's team, will be a big part of the bullpen this season. Devine throws his fastball about 95 mph but has command issues.
January 14, 2008
Joey Devine and minor league pitcher Jamie Richmond were sent to Oakland Monday as part of the Mark Kotsay deal. Devine, Atlanta's 2005 first-round pick, has dealt with injuries and has been hit-or-miss at the big-league level so far. He could be given a shot to close if Oakland ends up trading Huston Street.
