Newsbreakers
November 19, 2008
Foxsports.com is reporting that Mike Mussina will retire but won't make the official announcement until later in the week.

Our View:If last year was Mussina's last, it was a pretty successful swan song. The veteran won 20 games and had an ERA of 3.37.
November 19, 2008
Mike Mussina could make his decision regarding retirement as early as today, according to Newsday.

Our View:There wouldn't be much room for him in the Yankees' rotation next season if the club lands CC Sabathia and AJ Burnett, but there is no doubt he can still pitch at a high level as he maintained a 1.22 WHIP over 200.1 innings in 2008.
November 8, 2008
Yankees manager Joe Girardi said he had a conversation with pitcher Mike Mussina in which he said he would likely hang 'em up, according to the New York Daily News. "Moose told me after the season that he was probably going to retire," Girardi said.

Our View:Mussina had a great year in 2008, with 20 wins and a 3.37 ERA with a 1.22 WHIP. There is no word on when Mussina will make his final decision.
November 4, 2008
Mike Mussina's agent said there is no timetable for Mussina to decide whether or not he'll retire, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View:The Yankees are proceeding as if Mussina will not be with them next year.
October 29, 2008
Arn Tellem, the agent for pitcher Mike Mussina, said he will travel to the right-hander's home next week to discuss what Mussina's plans are for the future, according to the New York Post.

Our View:Mussina is still deciding whether or not he wants to play another season. He has 270 wins, and getting closer to 300 would only enhance his Hall of Fame credibility.
October 26, 2008
Most expect Mike Mussina to announce his retirement sometime in the next month, but agent Arn Tellem said the veteran hasn't made up his mind yet, according to Newsday.

Our View:Moose has played 20 years, but he also had his first ever 20-win season in 2008, so it's clear that he still has some ability. We'll let you know when he makes a decision on his future.
October 24, 2008
Mike Mussina will more than likely retire, according to Newsday.

Our View:Mussina won 20 games this year for the first time in his career, while posting a 3.37 ERA. Financially, it may not make much sense, but it would allow him to go out on top personally, even though the Yankees missed the postseason for the first time since he arrived.
October 15, 2008
Mike Mussina appears to still be leaning toward retirement, according to a report on Fox Sports by Ken Rosenthal. The report doesn't speak to what Mussina has said instead relying on "friends" who think that Mussina just isn't convinced the Yankees will be able to win enough to give him a legit shot at 300 wins.

Our View:Mussina currently has 270 victories, and though he has at least 11 victories over each of the past 17 years, it really speaks to how much trouble the Yankees are in if he truly doesn't think he could pick up 30 victories in three years.
October 7, 2008
Yankees pitcher Mike Mussina says he has not yet decided whether or not he will pitch next season, according to the New York Daily News. "The playoffs are still going on and it still seems like the season just ended. I'm not rushing after it, but I know sooner or later I'm going to have to figure out what I want to do," he said.

Our View:Mussina is at 270 wins, and though he would not get to 300 career victories next year, getting to 280 or 285 would certainly help his iffy Hall of Fame candidacy.
October 2, 2008
At his press conference on Wednesday, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said he thinks that Yankees hurler Mike Mussina is leaning towards retirement, according to the Lower Hudson Journal News.

Our View:Mussina shocked the fantasy world by achieving his first 20-win season this year, to go with a 3.37 ERA and 1.22 WHIP. He has 270 career wins, and is a borderline Hall of Fame player.
September 28, 2008
Mike Mussina won his 20th game of the season as the Yankees beat the Red Sox 6-2 on Sunday. He threw six shutout innings and allowed only three hits. It was the first time in his professional career, which started in 1991, that Mussina has won 20 games despite making 536 career starts. He has won 19 games twice and 18 games three times.

Our View:A year ago, Mussina appeared to be all but done as he went 11-10 with a 5.15 ERA. This season was clearly a different story as he went 20-9 with a 3.47 ERA. Opponents hit .281 off the vet. His 200.1 innings makes this the first year since 2003 that he has gone for more than 200.
September 28, 2008
Mike Mussina will decide over the winter if he wants to pitch for three more campaigns, or just retire now, according to the NY Times.

Our View:Mussina can still pitch at a high level, and is shooting for his first 20-win season today against the rival Red Sox. He currently has 269 career wins, and will either invest the time to reach 300, or hang up his cleats.
September 23, 2008
Mike Mussina won his 19th game of the season by throwing five shutout innings and striking out six in the Yankees' 3-1 win over Toronto.

Our View:Mussina tossed only 73 pitches on the day, and now has a shot at winning 20 games, which absolutely nobody could have predicted at the beginning of the year.
September 18, 2008
Mike Mussina won his 18th game of the year on Thursday night against the White Sox. Moose gave up one run over six innings and also struck out four.

Our View:Mussina got back in the win column after dropping his last two starts. After almost being released early in the season, Mussina has rewarded fantasy owners with a very good year on the hill.
September 8, 2008
Mike Mussina noted that the welt on his chest didn't compromise his pitching and does not believe what will turn into a black and blue bruise will prevent him from making his next start, according to the NY Post.

Our View:His next start would likely be Friday against the Rays. Mussina was dealt a loss in his last start, but that was his first defeat since July 28.
September 7, 2008
Yankees pitcher Mike Mussina suffered his eighth loss of the season, tossing six innings and surrendering four earned runs in his team's 5-2 loss to Seattle.

Our View:This is the first time Mussina has picked up a loss since July 28, and after appearing dead in the water last season, there is no reason for fantasy owners to lament his contributions this year.
September 4, 2008
Yankees pitcher Mike Mussina could be pitching every fifth day, instead of every fifth game, meaning he would get one more turn in the rotation this season, according to the Newark Star-Ledger.

Our View:Mussina would have an extra shot at accumulating 20 wins, and with the Yankees pitching woes, it won't hurt to have him on the mound as much as possible.
September 2, 2008
Despite giving up 10 hits, Mike Mussina held the Rays to just two runs in six innings while striking out eight and picking up his 17th win of the year in the Yankees 7-2 win.

Our View:Nobody could have seen this coming from Moose at the beginning of the year, and he has gotten better as the season has worn on. Only in April did he have an ERA over 4.00 for a month.
August 28, 2008
Even though Mike Mussina did not get the win in the Yankees 3-2 victory, he did exactly what the Yankees needed him to do. He gave them seven strong innings surrendering two runs on only five hits and struck-out six.

Our View:Mussina continued his streak of lowering his ERA each and every outing lowering it to 3.41.
August 28, 2008
It has been an up and down year for Mike Mussina who started the season with a record of 1-3 and an ERA as high as 5.75. But after the rough start Mussina reeled off nine wins in his next 11 starts and lowering his ERA to as low as 3.27. If there has been one thorn in the side of Mussina it has been the Red Sox, he is 1-3 on the year against the Yanks biggest rival with an ERA of 5.75.

Our View:In the month of August Mussina is 3-0 with an ERA of 3.00. Today Mussina is trying to stop the Red Sox train from rolling in and out of Yankee Stadium with a three-game sweep. Mussina has been a very solid fantasy starter all year and should continue down the stretch.
August 24, 2008
The Yankees seem to be in the dumps as we stand, fighting to stay in the playoff mix (and failing), but the eye towards tomorrow indicates the team will use the experience to rebuild with new-found dollars for free agency, according to the Boston Globe. Jason Giambi has a $21 million option that will not be picked up. Bobby Abreu is also up and seems likely to go. Mike Mussina is at the end of his deal. The four-year, $39 million pact of Carl Pavano is ending. Half-year rental catcher Ivan Rodriguez will likely be gone. Andy Pettitte also goes year to year, and while his often-balky left elbow has held up well, he has not committed to next season yet. There's the uncertainty of Jorge Posada, who wants to catch next year, though the Yankees have no idea how much his surgically repaired right shoulder will bounce back.

Our View:That's more than enough dollars with more than a few players that will be available to eat it up should the Yanks take it all to market. Improved pitching will be priority #1, but only time will tell how they roll the dice. With Alex Rodriguez secured, Derek Jeter returning, and Xavier Nady all but certain to see a long-term commitment from the Yankees, it is fair to suggest they will serve as the battery for a full-blown reconstruction effort.
August 22, 2008
Mike Mussina, who is looking for his 17th win of the season tonight at Baltimore, has won six of his last seven overall decisions with a 6-0 record and a 2.68 ERA in eight road starts since early April. However, the O's have been Moose's nemesis this season. Mussina has allowed 13 runs and 13 hits over 5.2 innings in two starts against his former team.

Our View:He is 10-8 with a 4.78 ERA in 25 starts against the O's. Consider that Brian Roberts is 20-for-42, Kevin Millar is 18-for-41 with three homers and Melvin Mora is 15-for-46 with a home run lifetime against Mussina, the Yankee right-hander is in deep tonight.
August 17, 2008
The Yankees and their fans have to be happy to see ace Mike Mussina emerging once again in 2008, today picking up his 16th win of the season by putting the Royals in the loss column. Moose pitched six innings, allowing three runs (all earned) on six hits with no walks and five strikeouts.

Our View:The overall record moves to 16-7 with a 3.35 ERA for Mussina. Since the end of June, he has been a stud, going 6-1 with six walks and 48 strikeouts.
August 12, 2008
He may have got lost in the shuffle, but Yankee RHP Mike Mussina did worthy work off the mound this evening in support of the extra-inning 9-6 win over the Twins. Mussina pitched seven innings, allowing three runs (all earned) on eight hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

Our View:Moose walks with no decision, halting a two-game win streak. In fact, Mussina boasts five wins over his last eight starts with two no-decisions and one loss.
August 12, 2008
Mike Mussina (15-7, 3.27 ERA) will try to end the Yankees current four game skid as he faces the Twins, Tuesday, August 12.

Our View:In a rotation filled with year-long uncertainty, Mussina has been the one constant. Look for the Yankees to rally behind this old veteran.
August 7, 2008
Mike Mussina won his 15th game of the season by allowing no earned runs in seven innings while striking out six in New York's 3-0 win over Texas.

Our View:Mussina continues his surprising season, and he has given up just one earned run in his last 14 innings.
August 2, 2008
Mike Mussina enjoyed another strong outing in Saturday's 8-2 win over the Angels at Yankee Stadium, as he only allowed one earned run on two hits over seven innings, with two walks and five strikeouts.

Our View:Mussina improves to 14-7, and trimmed his ERA to 3.44. He bounced back nicely, as he was lit up for six earned runs over five innings in his last start against Baltimore on July 28.
July 28, 2008
Mike Mussina, who has pitched very well for the past month, was hit hard by his former team, the Orioles, once again on Monday night. He lasted five innings and gave up six runs on eight hits, two of which were home runs.

Our View:Earlier this season, the Orioles scored seven runs in 0.2 innings off of Moose. For some reason he doesn't bring his best stuff with him against the O's.
July 23, 2008
Mike Mussina improved to 13-6 by pitching eight masterful innings against the Twins on Wednesday. Mussina allowed six hits and didn't walk a single batter on his way to seven strike outs and zero runs allowed.

Our View:Mussina has now worked five straight games of at least six innings with less than two runs allowed each outing. He continues to amaze given his recent history, largely the result of simply not walking any batters (only 16 in 21 games).
July 18, 2008
Oakland couldn't get the offense going this evening as they fell 7-1 to the Yankees, giving RHP Mike Mussina his 12th win of the season. Mussina pitched six innings, allowing just one run on nine hits with no walks and six strikeouts.

Our View:Mussino now sits at 12-6 on the year with an ERA of 3.49. He had earned just one win over his last four starters before tonight, signs that he may be getting back on track.
July 13, 2008
The Yankees wore black armbands on their left sleeve Sunday at Toronto in honor of former player Bobby Murcer, who passed on Saturday. The players will continue to wear the bands for the remainder of the season. The team also announced during the broadcast of their 4-1 loss to the Blue Jays that Mike Mussina will start against Oakland on Friday, the first game following the All-Star break.

Our View:Mussina will be followed in the rotation by Joba Chamberlain, Andy Pettitte, Sidney Ponson and Darrell Rasner.
July 10, 2008
The Yanks failed to support the efforts of their pitcher this evening, ruining a good outing to fall 4-2 to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The pitcher in question was Mike Mussina , going six innings to allow just two runs (both earned) on nine hits with no walks and five strikeouts.

Our View:Mussina walks with no decision, but adding to an impressive 11-6 record would have been nice. He has five wins and just two losses over his last nine starts, allowing a total of just four earned runs in those two no-decisions during that span.
July 5, 2008
Mike Mussina strengthened his all-star bid on Saturday as he held the Red Sox without a run over six innings to up his record to 11-6. Mussina allowed four hits, a walk, and struck out five in the win.

Our View:Mussina looked completely lost last year with a 5.15 ERA and 1.47 WHIP, and despite barely reaching 89 mph with his fastball, he has seemingly turned back the clock this season, thanks in great part to just 16 walks in 18 starts. His margin for error remains small, but he continues to have success regardless.
June 30, 2008
Mike Mussina allowed only two runs on five hits, walked two and struck out eight in a 2-1 loss to the Rangers on Monday night.

Our View:Mussina is now 10-6 with a 3.87 ERA and 1.24 WHIP. Surprisingly the veteran right-hander been the most consistent Yankees' starter this season.
June 26, 2008
Mike Mussina and his Yankee teammates had their game with the Pirates called due to rain, lighting and thunder on Thursday night, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The game has been rescheduled for a mutual off day on July 10th at 7:05 at PNC Park.

Our View:For those of you in weekly leagues this is bad news, but it creates the chance for an extra start for pitchers in the week when the game is being made up.
June 20, 2008
Mike Mussina lost his fifth game of the year in a matchup with the Reds Edinson Volquez on Friday night. Mussina allowed 10 hits and two walks, in permitting the Reds to score four runs.

Our View:Mussina allowed double digit hits tonight for the first time this season, though he still made it through eight innings with just 110 pitches. Don't let the 10-5 record fool you, Mussina's margin for error is pretty slim these days.
June 20, 2008
Mike Mussina will be aiming for his 11th win of the season tonight when the Yankees host the Reds in inter-league action, according to MLB.com. Mussina is 10-4 with a 3.87 ERA and solid 1.22 WHIP.

Our View:He hasn't faced the Reds since June 4, 2003, when he allowed six earned runs and eight hits over 5.1 innings. He has allowed two or less earned runs in nine of 15 starts this season, and hasn't issued a walk in either of his last two outings.
June 14, 2008
Yankees RHP Mike Mussina was as reliable as ever this evening, putting a strong performance on the mound in the team's 8-4 win over the Houston Astros. Mussina pitched six innings, surrendering three runs (all earned) on six hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

Our View:Mussina now touts four wins over his last five starts, taking a no-decision in between. Take it back April 23rd and the record takes full form: 9-1.
June 9, 2008
Mike Mussina allowed two runs on seven hits over eight innings in Monday's 3-2 loss to Kansas City, with no walks and three strikeouts. Most of the damage came on a two-run homer by Miguel Olivo. Mussina ended the day with a no decision.

Our View:He pitched well enough to win, and just didn't get adequate run support from his team-mates. He has allowed two or less earned runs in three straight starts.
June 4, 2008
Mike Mussina tied for the American League lead in wins pitching the New York Yankees to a 5-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday night.

Our View:It is difficult to believe, but it appears that Mussina has taken on the Jamie Moyer arsenal and found a way to be successful doing so. Mussina's fastball topped out at 87 mph tonight, but the difference between his fastball and change-up (76-78 mph) is enough to fool even the best major league hitters.
May 24, 2008
Mike Mussina allowed four runs on seven hits, walked one and struck out four in five shaky innings Saturday. In a game that figured to be high scoring, the Yankees bombed Mariners' starter Carlos Silva, and New York recorded their 24th victory of the season with a 12-6 win.

Our View:Mussina game way to Joba Chamberlain who entered in the sixth, his second appearance since starting the transition from setup man to starter. Chamberlain faced eight batters and threw 40 pitches, 22 for strikes.
May 20, 2008
Mike Mussina didn't do his best Jamie Moyer impression on Tuesday night against the Orioles. The veteran right-hander allowed seven runs (one earned) on five hits, walked two and struck out one in two-thirds of an inning before giving way to Ross Ohlendorf.

Our View:After winning five straight, Mussina was bombed. While we don't expect the veteran to get lit up like he did against the O's, his five straight wins were a bit of an aberration for an arm that is throwing in the mid-eighties.
May 20, 2008
Mike Mussina has won five straight starts and will aim to extend his streak tonight when the Yankees host the Orioles, according to MLB.com. He has also allowed three earned runs or fewer in every start over the streak.

Our View:Mussina is 6-3 overall, with a 3.99 ERA and 1.17 WHIP. He only has 24 strikeouts over 49.2 innings, but is solid in the other stat categories, and should remain in your lineups tonight.
May 14, 2008
Mike Mussina allowed one run on five hits, walked one and struck out four in 6.1 innings to win his fifth consecutive decision. He improved to 18-7 in 31 starts against Tampa Bay, which held on to its slender lead in the AL East.

Our View:Mussina is finding a way to get hitters out. He's discovered how to use his slight velocity difference between his 87 mph fastball and his 82 mph change, and be successful.
May 8, 2008
Mike Mussina notched his fifth win of the season on Thursday, as the Yankees topped the Indians 6-3. Mussina allowed three runs on four hits over five innings, with no walks and three strikeouts.

Our View:Mussina is displaying strong control this season, as he has only issued five walks over 52 innings. Two of those walks came in his first start of the season.
May 3, 2008
Yankee RHP Mike Mussina was in strong form for New York today, leading his team to an impressive 6-1 over the Seattle Mariners. Mussina pitched six innings, allowing just one run on seven hits, failing to surrender a single walk while striking out five.

Our View:Moose now touts just five walks allowed this season versus 17 strike outs, also failing to surrender a single home run for only the second time this season.
April 28, 2008
Mike Mussina allowed two runs on seven hits in five innings of work in Monday night's 5-2 win over the Indians. It was Mussina's 253rd win, tying Hall of Famer Carl Hubbell on the career list.

Our View:The 39-year-old isn't the same pitcher he once was. The right-hander threw mostly breaking balls that registered speeds in low 60s to high 70s, with an occasional 88 mph fastball. Mussina is now officially nothing more than junk-baller that will occasionally turn in a performance like he did on Monday night. After tonight's win, his third of the season, his value has peaked. Consider finding a buyer for the leagues new Jamie Moyer.
April 23, 2008
Yankee starter Mike Mussina looked like the Mussina of old this evening, earning his second victory of the season in the Yanks' 6-4 win over the Chicago White Sox. Mussina completed seven innings, throwing 101 pitches (66 for strikes), allowing two runs (both earned) on four hits. Moose did allow two home runs, both with no one on base, but he surrendered just one walk with three strike outs earned.

Our View:Homers have been Moose's problem this season, now touting seven allowed over five starts.
April 7, 2008
Mike Mussina earned his first victory of the season, the 251st of his career, to tie Bob Gibson for 42nd on the all-time list on Monday night. Mussina was sharp as he mixed his pitches all night allowing only one run over six innings against the Rays. Mussina will live on the edge all season as his stuff has declined to the point that his margin of error is razor thin.
April 2, 2008
Mike Mussina suffered through a rough evening on the mound, using 5 2/3 innings to surrender 4 runs (3 earned) on 8 hits, including a home run for Vernon Wells, as the Yanks lost 2-5 at home to the Blue Jays. The Yanks are in need of much more from their starting pitching if they hope to keep pace with the always-competitive AL East, and while it is very early and this struggle should not weigh on the minds of fans and fantasy owners, it is a bit frustrating to see the Yanks start so poorly.
March 23, 2008
Mike Mussina looked solid in his minor league intrasquad session on Sunday, according to MLB.com. He threw seven innings of one-run ball (83 pitches), with four strikeouts and only one walk. This was a good day for him and his final spring start will come on Friday against the Marlins.
March 13, 2008
Mike Mussina had his best outing of the spring on Thursday as he was perfect over five innings, with two strikeouts. He threw 64 pitches, 41 of them strikes. He continues to battle for a spot in the Yankees' rotation.
March 3, 2008
Mike Mussina made his spring debut on Monday and allowed six hits and five runs (four earned) over two innings. He served up one homer, walked none, and struck out none.
February 27, 2008
Mike Mussina reported to camp with the hopes of erasing a terrible 2007 season that has some wondering if his HOF career is over, this according to MLB.com. "A normal spring for being 39?" Mussina said. "I don't know what that is. It takes a lot of work. There's a lot of people out there who want to do what I do. I've got to stay after it and be ready to go." The Yankees really need a healthy and productive Mussina this year to take the pressure off the teams triad of superb youngster in Philip Hughes, Ian Kennedy and Joba Chamberlain. Mussina should only be a target in AL Only leagues at this point after last year's 5.15 ERA and 1.47 WHIP. Keep an eye on him to see if a rebound is in the cards.
January 6, 2008
Mike Mussina and Ian Kennedy will enter spring training battling for the No. 5 spot in the rotation, according to the New York Daily News. Mussina didn't make much of a case last year, posting a 5.15 ERA over 152 innings.
