May 10, 2008 Philadelphia athletic trainer Scott Sheridan reports top prospect RHP Scott Mathieson is likely to undergo a second surgery to reconstruct his right elbow next week, according to MLB.com.
Our View:Mathieson underwent Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery in September of 2006, but a recent visit with Dr. James Andrews for an arthroscopic procedure on Thursday revealed the ulnar collateral ligament is likely to be a significant problem and needs to be reconstructed. This is horrific news for Mathieson as only 10% of today's patients fail to recover from Tommy John surgery, but only 30% of patients that need a second procedure are able to recover.
