Newsbreakers
November 12, 2008
Greg Smith has officially been traded to the Rockies, along with outfielder Carlos Gonzalez and closer Huston Street, in exchange for elite outfielder Matt Holliday, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:Smith maintained a passable 1.35 WHIP over 32 starts in 2007 with Oakland, and should easily improve upon his seven wins with better run support from his Rockies' teammates.
November 10, 2008
USA Today reports that Greg Smith's involvement in the Matt Holliday trade has been confirmed.

Our View:The rookie had a solid season in 2008 despite his 7-16 record in 32 starts. He had a 4.16 ERA and walked 88 batters in 190.1 innings. He also gave up 21 home runs which will likely be a problem in Colorado.
November 10, 2008
Greg Smith is believed to be part of the deal involving Matt Holliday being dealt from Colorado to Oakland, according to ESPN.

Our View:The Rockies need pitching and Smith should be a favorable acquisition, as the rookie maintained a 1.35 WHIP over 190.1 innings in 2008.
October 28, 2008
Greg Smith underwent surgery on his pitching elbow to remove some loose bodies, according to the A's official web site.

Our View:Smith had a pretty respectable rookie season. The lefty won seven games and struck out 111 hitters in 190 innings.
September 22, 2008
Greg Smith allowed two runs over five innings on Monday against the Rangers, but he was left with a no-decision after the game went into extra innings.

Our View:Smith has been the victim of the worst level of run support in baseball at 2.70 runs per nine innings entering tonight's outing, though the A's did manage to score a whopping three runs for him on this night. He has pitched much better than his 7-15 record would indicate.
