Mather injured the hand while trying to check his swing during a third-inning at-bat against Diamondbacks' lefty Randy Johnson. Mather felt pain but stayed with the at-bat, striking out on the next pitch.
Our View:Mather has been seeing more action while working in a platoon with Skip Schumaker, but Mather isn't optimistic about his injury, and there is a chance he won't return this season.
