Newsbreakers
September 22, 2008
Joe Mather has been activated from the DL, according to the Associated Press. Mather had been out of action due to a broken bone in his left wrist.

Our View:He might get an at-bat or two in the final week, but his activation shouldn't eat into anyone's playing time in the Cardinals outfield.

Joe Mather is scheduled for surgery Thursday for removal of a bone in his left hand, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:An exam Tuesday morning revealed a crack in a wedge-shaped bone located near the base of Mather's left ring finger and pinkie. Removal of the bone is considered routine, and a six-week rehab is expected. He should be ready to compete for an outfield spot next spring.

Cardinals outfielder Joe Mather broke a bone in his wrist, and will not play again this season, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Mather saw a hand specialist who recommended surgery on the wrist. Oddly, he did it while checking his swing. He should compete for a spot in the St. Louis outfield next spring.

Joe Mather will be examined by a local hand specialist Tuesday after leaving Monday's fourth inning with what initially was deemed to be a left wrist sprain, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Mather injured the hand while trying to check his swing during a third-inning at-bat against Diamondbacks' lefty Randy Johnson. Mather felt pain but stayed with the at-bat, striking out on the next pitch.

Our View:Mather has been seeing more action while working in a platoon with Skip Schumaker, but Mather isn't optimistic about his injury, and there is a chance he won't return this season.
July 30, 2008
Joe Mather hit his fourth home run of the season on Wednesday as he went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI for the Cardinals.

Our View:Mather continues to impress playing mostly because of an injury to Rick Ankiel. Tonight's effort gives Mather six hits and four RBI in his last three starts.
