Veteran lefty Rogers files for free agency New York, NY (Sports Network) - Veteran hurler Kenny Rogers was the only
player to file for free agency on Tuesday.
The 20-year journeyman went 9-13 last season in 30 starts for the Detroit
Tigers, his third year with the club. His 5.70 earned run average was his
highest since 2001, when he was tagged with a 6.19 ERA in 20 outings with the
Texas Rangers.
The 44-year-old lefty has appeared in 762 games -- 474 career starts -- with
Texas, Oakland, Minnesota, Detroit and both New York franchises, compiling a
219-156 record with a 4.27 ERA.
Dontrelle Willis is working out at home to strengthen his lower body after a hyperextended knee in April was to blame for a disappointing 2008 campaign, according to the Hot Stove Blog on MLB.com.
Our View:There was news circulating that the Red Sox were considering trading shortstop Julio Lugo to Detroit for either Willis or Nate Robertson. Deals were reportedly progressing, but nothing is imminent. Willis is aiming to report to training camp in the best shape of his life, making him a potential comeback player of the year candidate.
The Detroit Tigers are thinking about putting Brandon Inge at shortstop should they be unable to fill the void left by Edgar Renteria, reports Peter Gammons of ESPN.com.
Our View:Inge was slated to take over the third base role next season, and he is a slick fielder who was a shortstop in college, so it is not an idea that comes out of nowhere.
