Newsbreakers
December 3, 2008
Yao Ming contributed 24 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and one steal.

Our View:Ming needs to keep putting up numbers like this to keep the Rockets winning until Tracy McGrady can return to the Houston lineup.
November 30, 2008
Yao Ming led all Rockets scorers with 18 points but it wasn't enough as his team fell 94-104 on Sunday. He also chipped in 11 rebounds and three blocks.

Our View:Yao has all sorts of value but his 17.3 points per game is his lowest mark since his second season.
November 30, 2008
Yao Ming scored 12 points on Saturday and also added three blocks, two assists, one rebound, and one steal to the Rockets 103-84 rout of the Spurs.

Our View:The offense was spread around a lot on Saturday, as Houston has seven different players score in double figures including all five starters.
November 26, 2008
Yao Ming scored 19 points and had 10 rebounds, but he couldn't quite get Houston over the hump as they lost to the Pacers, 91-90.

Our View:Ming was almost exactly at his season averages, but he only made five of his 14 shots from the field, a very poor number compared to his usual 53 percent.
November 24, 2008
Yao Ming racked up 28 points while collecting 12 rebounds as the Rockets beat the Heat, 107-98.

Our View:Ming scored more than 10 points more than his season average, though he somehow had zero blocks on the evening despite going up against the Heat, which features Udonis Haslem (6-foot-8) and Joel Anthony (6-foot-9) at center. Ming stands at 7-foot-6.
November 22, 2008
Yao Ming won the battle with Dwight Howard on Saturday night as the Rockets defeated the Magic 100-95. He finished with 22 points and 13 rebounds as Howard battled foul trouble most of the night.

Our View:Ming gave his owners a good scare last week when he hurt his ankle. However, he has played well since his return and seems a good bet going forward.
November 21, 2008
As expected, Yao Ming returned to action Friday night against the Wizards, according to the Associated Press. He only missed one game with a sore left foot.

Our View:He should be fine to employ in fantasy lineups if he gets through tonight's game without any problems.
November 21, 2008
The Houston Chronicle reports that Yao Ming (ankle) went through Friday’s morning shootaround and declared that he was ready to play tonight against the Washington Wizards.

Our View:This is obviously exceptional news as many feared his annual February injury had come early this season. His scoring is down and he somehow fails to average 10 or more boards a game, but Ming is still a No. 1 center when healthy.
November 20, 2008
Rockets center Yao Ming will suit up on Friday for the team in their game against the Wizards, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View:Ming was forced to miss Wednesday's game with a sore left foot but he has been cleared.
November 19, 2008
Yao Ming is likely to miss tonight's battle with Dallas due to his ankle injury, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:He will be a game-time call, and fantasy owners should proceed with another option at center to be safe.
November 18, 2008
Yao Ming didn't practice on Tuesday, but insisted he would play in Wednesday's game according to the Houston Chronicle. Ming said that the x-ray didn't reveal any problems and that he felt much better.

Our View:Ming should be in your lineup for Wednesday.
November 17, 2008
Yao Ming scored 19 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and blocked three shots while shooting 7-of-8 from the field as the Rockets defeated the Thunder 100-89 on Monday.

Our View:Ming's numbers have been down slightly this season, but he remains one of the best centers in the game.
November 16, 2008
Yao Ming had a big night on Saturday for the Rockets, scoring 21 points in the 91-82 win over the Hornets. He also had six rebound and an assist.

Our View:Ming having a big night certainly made the difference, a night after he was held to 13 and the Rockets lost.
November 14, 2008
Yao Ming had a decent game on Friday for the Rockets, by notching 13 points, eight rebounds, and an assist.

Our View:Ming is a good source of points, rebounds, and blocks in fantasy.
November 13, 2008
Yao Ming had 17 points, 15 rebounds and two blocks in his matchup against Shaquille O'Neal and the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday.

Our View:Ming remains one of the most consistent centers in the game when he is healthy. However, he has already undergone X-rays once this season (knee) and owners should be aware of his fragility.
November 8, 2008
Rockets center Yao Ming had X-rays on his knee, but they were negative, and it turned out to be just a bruise, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View:Ming should be fine, and he is performing fairly well, putting up over 17 points, nine points and nearly two blocks per game for fantasy owners.
November 1, 2008
Yao Ming contributed 16 points and 11 boards in Saturday's 89-77 win over the Thunder, with two assists and a block.

Our View:Yao notched a double-double in each of the first three games of the season, while guiding the Rockets to a 3-0 record. He should continue to generate strong fantasy numbers, as long as he stays intact.
October 30, 2008
Yao Ming led the Rockets in scoring with 30 points on Thursday night's 112-102 win over the Mavericks.

Our View:To go along with Mings's 30 points he added 13 rebounds. In two games of the season Yao is averaging a double-double.
October 29, 2008
Yao Ming led the Rockets to a 82-71 victory over the Grizzlies on Wednesday. He had 21 points and 10 rebounds in the game.

Our View:This should be pretty standard production for Ming. However, he had just one block and owners have to hope for more than that on a nightly basis.
October 25, 2008
Yao Ming is fine after tweaking his left groin muscle, according to the Houston Chronicle. He said, "I was more scared. I was never hurt there before. I never had that problem before. I didn’t know the situation. It was more like scared than hurt."

Our View:He looks to be in good shape heading into the regular season, and is looking forward to making the playoffs with the Rockets.
October 23, 2008
There were reports that Yao Ming was retiring from the Chinese national team, but he denied those, according to the Houston Chronicle. "I don’t know where the news came from. I’m not aware of that. Maybe he heard something from somebody I know. It was not from me," Ming said.

Our View:Ming said he is focused on making a playoff run with the Rockets. He recently played for China in the Olympics.
October 17, 2008
Yao Ming played 26 minutes on Friday night scoring 15 points before being forced from the game with a twisted ankle, according to The Sports Network.

Our View:The report states that the injury was minor but the team chose to play it safe rather than risk aggravating the injury in a meaningless preseason game.
October 13, 2008
Yao Ming seemed smoother and more effective offensively in his third preseason game than in his first two contests while shaking off the rust, according to the Houston Chronicle. He said, "I was more comfortable, but I had four turnovers and just three rebounds in 24 minutes. It’s never perfect. There is always something to do better. I won’t say I have a long way to go, but I have a way to go."

Our View:He looks to be in good shape by the start of the regular season, and should be drafted accordingly.
October 7, 2008
Yao Ming had 10 points, nine rebounds and a block in 22 minutes of action in the preseason win over Memphis on Tuesday.

Our View:Yao was 6-for-6 from the line where he holds great fantasy value. He converted 85 percent of his 345 free throw attempts last season.
September 30, 2008
Rockets center Yao Ming says his foot is now completely healthy, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View:Ming fractured it last February and it hampered him in the Olympics a bit, but he now says that he's ready to go. Fantasy owners should keep this injury in the back of their minds during drafts, but at the thin center position, he should still be a hot commodity.
August 25, 2008
Yao Ming said he was limping throughout the Olympics due to blisters, not due to the foot injury (stress fracture) that ended his season with the Rockets, according to the Houston Chronicle. He said, "Did I get everyone in Houston worried with the limp? The bone in the foot is fine. I just had some blisters."

Our View:He left the Olympics without a medal, but looks to be fine for training camp with Houston.
August 20, 2008
Yao Ming's Team China has been eliminated from the Olympics Wednesday with a 94-68 loss to Lithuania, according to the Houston Chronicle. Yao shot 4-for-8 from the field, and scored 19 points with seven rebounds. Yao said, "I think we have taken a journey on Olympic history. I am glad at the situation, but am regrettable about the results."

Our View:He played 33 1/2 minutes in the loss, which was his longest outing in Beijing.
August 18, 2008
Yao Ming scored a team-high 16 points with five rebounds (over 18 minutes) for Team China, but was not enough to overtake Greece, who comfortably won 91-77.

Our View:Yao will try to get China back on track against Lithuania on Wednesday (in the quarter finals).
August 16, 2008
Center Yao Ming had a great game against Germany, scoring 25 points and snaring 11 rebounds to lead China to a 59-55 win, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View:Ming scored 30 in his previous game against Angloa, so he has clearly turned it on. Fantasy players should be pleased that the stress fracture in his foot appears to be fine.
August 14, 2008
Yao Ming scored 30 points to lead China to a 85-68 win over Angola in the Olympics, according to the Houston Chronicle. He hit 10-of-11 shots in the game.

Our View:After blowing a double-digit fourth-quarter lead against Spain, China needed the win to keep alive the hope of advancing out of the preliminary round of the Olympic tournament.
August 7, 2008
Yao Ming will be the flag bearer for China for the second straight Olympics, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View:Yao will be the sixth consecutive male basketball player to carry China’s flag at the Summer Olympics, dating back to 1984. Wang Libin carried the flag that year in Los Angeles, followed by Song Tao (1988, Seoul), Song Li (1992, Barcelona), Liu Yudong (1996, Atlanta and 2000, Sydney) and Yao (2004, Athens). Yao and the Chinese national basketball team will make their debut at the 2008 Olympics when they battle Team USA on Sunday before a sellout crowd that is expected to include President Bush, along with Chinese president Hu Jintao and premier Wen Jiabao.
July 30, 2008
Yao Ming was 5-for-8 from the field and scored 14 points as Team China lost 67-55 to Team Australia, according to the AP.

Our View:Ming went up opposite Milwaukee center Andrew Bogut, who helped limit Ming's touches. Ming just recently recovered from a stress fracture in his foot, so it may take him some time to re-acclimate himself to the game.
July 29, 2008
The AP reports that Yao Ming shot 8-for-10 on his way to tallying 21 points, five rebounds and two blocks over 28 minutes in a China win over Angola on Tuesday night.

Our View:Yao is recovering from surgery on his foot last March. It appears he is coming around as scheduled, though we still find it hard to believe that a 7-foot-6 giant can only grab five rebounds in a game featuring players from China and Angola.
July 18, 2008
Yao Ming, who is trying to bounce back from a stress fracture in his left foot, scored 11 points in 12 minutes of play with the Chinese national team in an Olympic tuneup Thursday, according to the Houston Chronicle. Yao helped his club to a 96-72 win over the Serbian squad in the four-team Stankovic Cup tournament, and he walked off the court after the game without speaking to reporters.

Our View:Yao returned to light training late last month after X-rays and an MRI scan taken in Houston showed his recovery was on schedule, at about 80 percent healed. Such injuries typically take a full year to heal.
July 17, 2008
Yao Ming returned to the court Thursday (with the Chinese national team) for the first time in almost six months, according to the AP. He scored six points in seven minutes of action, and appeared rusty, as this was his first game since suffering a stress fracture in February.

Our View:The injury is said to take a full year to heal, but Yao describes it to be 80 percent back to health. The Olympics are set to begin in August, and his minutes, barring a setback, will gradually rise heading up to that point.
July 15, 2008
Yao Ming is aiming to play in the Stankovic Cup this week, Reuters reports. It is a four-team, round-robin tournament that serves as a warm-up for the Olympics. "Yao will definitely go to the Stankovic Cup in Hangzhou, and the chance of him playing is very high," Hu Jiashi, vice chief of Chinese Basketball Association, says. China will face Serbia on Thursday. Ming is coming back from a stress fracture in his left foot.

Our View:It's a good sign that Yao is this close to returning to the court. Barring any setbacks, the Rockets center will be ready for the 2008-09 season. The lingering question, though, is if he'll be able to stay healthy.
June 26, 2008
Yao Ming is shooting for a July return to participate on China's national team, according to the Houston Chronicle. He said tests on Tuesday indicated that his recovery is on schedule and his left foot is 80% healed. The remaining 20% takes a full year to heal, and he said, "I've now done everything I can possibly do to get fit. In terms of being basketball fit, the only way to do that is to play games."

Our View:There will remain concern that Yao is returning to the court too soon, but playing in games could actually be good for him.
June 16, 2008
Despite earlier reports that he was ready to return to the court, Yao Ming has not been medically cleared by his doctors to return from his injured foot, according to the Houston Chronicle. "He's doing great," agent John Huizinga said. "The reports that he's been cleared to play are not correct. The checkups have been very good. He had one today. But it's much too early for him to be cleared. He has a series of check points to continue to go through."

Our View:Ming has returned to practice in drill form, but he has not been cleared for any full contact work putting his availability to play in the Stankovic Cup in July in doubt.
June 16, 2008
Yao Ming has recovered favorably from foot surgery and is expected to play for China against Iran in the Stankovic Cup in July, according to ESPN.com.

Our View:He had been given the all-clear by the Rockets medical staff to return to China on June 24. If he performs well and looks healthy during his run with China, his fantasy stock should go back up heading into next season.
May 28, 2008
Yao Ming informs the Shanghai Daily that he remains on pace to play a couple exhibition games before the Olympic opener on August 10. The center is rehabbing a stress fracture in his left foot. He underwent surgery in March and began running last week. Yao hopes to scrimmage in a couple weeks.

Our View:Our primary concern remains the 2008-09 fantasy season, but it will be good to see Yao in action before next preseason. The center is a star, but injuries will subdue his fantasy value heading into the next NBA campaign.
April 25, 2008
Yao Ming traveled with the Rockets to Utah in order to support his teammates. He reiterated that his rehab from a stress fracture in his left foot is going well. "It's better than I thought," Yao tells the Houston Chronicle. "They told me that I would be using crutches for 10 weeks. But this is the eighth week, and I'm walking without crutches."

Our View:Yao was playing like a first-round fantasy pick until he busted his foot. He's logged only 57, 48 and 55 games in the last three seasons, and it will be interesting to debate his value heading into the 2008-09 season. The center should be healthy well in advance of training camp and may even play in the Olympics.
April 18, 2008
Yao Ming will be allowed to lose the crutches he has been on since he had surgery on his left foot, this according to the Houston Chronicle. "I still need to wear the walking boot for a couple weeks, but at least I can walk by myself. My hands are not busy anymore."

Our View:Yao still hopes to be able to participate in the Olympics, and it sounds like he is off to a good start in his recovery.
April 17, 2008
The Rockets will be the only team missing its starting center when their first-round series against the Utah Jazz begins on Saturday. The Rockets will be without Yao Ming and point guard Rafer Alston making the Rockets all the more dependent on All Star shooting guard Tracy McGrady.

Our View:McGrady, arguably the best shooting big guard in the league, can't carry the Rockets to the second round himself.
March 13, 2008
The Houston frontcourt hasn't missed a beat since losing Yao Ming to a foot injury. On Wednesday, power forward Luis Scola and his back-up Chuck Hayes both pulled down 12 rebounds in the Rockets' 83-75 win over the Hawks. The teams 20th consecutive win.
March 7, 2008
Yao Ming expects to be ready to play for China in the Olympics, according to the AP. "The surgery was very successful and I'll start physical recovery very soon," he wrote. "I'll do whatever I can to overcome the difficulty and play for China in Olympics and be in my best form. "I'll see you in the Olympics. Thanks, everybody." Yao is recovering from surgery that repaired a stress fracture in his foot. He's basically going to be the face of China at the Olympics, so he'll face incredible pressure to play. Let's hope that doesn't set him back for the 2008-09 fantasy season.
March 1, 2008
Yao Ming has opted for surgery to repair the stress fracture in his left foot, this according to the Houston Chronicle. The decision wasn't a hasty one as Yao met with several specialists to review his options. The surgery will be performed by Rockets team physician Dr. Tom Clanton on Monday. Ming is expected to be fully recovered for the start of the 2008-09 season.
February 26, 2008
Yao Ming will miss the remainder of the season and post-season with a stress fracture in his left foot. The Rockets center was diagnosed with the fracture after Monday’s practice. According to the Houston Chronicle the Rockets plan to announce a diagnosis at 1 p.m. this afternoon.
February 20, 2008
Yao Ming had 16 points and 14 rebounds Tuesday night as Houston won their ninth straight game 93-85 over Cleveland. Ming's double-double came despite a poor shooting performance from the floor (3-for-17). His perfect night from the line (10-of-10) though, helped the Rockets hold off LeBron James and the Cavs.
February 13, 2008
Yao Ming had three blocks on Wednesday to bring his career total to 759. The historic throw back moved him past Moses Malone for second most in team history. Hakeem Olajuwon is Houston's all time team leader with 3,740 in his career.
February 13, 2008
Yao Ming scored 25 points and pulled down 14 rebounds assisting the Rockets to their eighth straight win, a 89-87 victory over the Kings on Wednesday night. Ming hadn't recorded double-digit rebounds in his last two contests. The double-double came at just the right time as Houston collapsed in the fourth quarter, giving up an 18-point lead, but holding on for a squeaker over Sacramento.
February 9, 2008
Yao Ming led the Rockets, who never trailed, to a thrashing of the Hawks 108-89 on Saturday night. Ming scored 28 points and added nine rebounds in their 10th victory in 11 games. With or without Tracey McGrady in the lineup, Ming is an absolute monster in the middle. Ming posted a double-double in five of the past six games, not surprising considering he averages about 22 points and 11 boards a game.
February 8, 2008
Yao Ming registered 22 points and 12 rebounds in the Rockets' 92-77 victory over Cleveland on Thursday night, their ninth win in 10 games. Ming led Houston on the backboard as the Rockets outrebounded the Cavs 55-35. Cleveland recorded a porous seven offensive boards.
January 28, 2008
Yao Ming missed Sunday's game due to an upper-respiratory infection. "He is just sick," Rockets coach Rick Adelman said, according to the Houston Chronicle. "He came in this morning not feeling good. We had our walk-through and he felt worse. The doctors looked at him, and they don't think it's worth the chance." He won't practice Monday and currently is listed as questionable for Tuesday's run with Golden State. We'll have to wait to see how quickly he recovers before finding out whether he'll be able to play tomorrow, but he should be back soon, regardless.
January 27, 2008
Yao Ming sat out the Sunday's game with an upper respiratory infection. He told team officials he felt sick when he arrived at the Toyota Center for a workout on Sunday morning, coach Rick Adelman said. "The doctors looked at him and they don't think it's worth the chance," Adelman said in the AP. "We'll just have to move on." It's not clear at this point if this will keep Yao out any longer, but we'll keep you posted.
