| Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has been charged with insider trading by the Securities and Exchange Commission in regards to selling 600,000 shares of stock in 2004 in order to avoid a loss of nearly $750,000, according to the Dallas Morning News. |
Our View: Cuban got information saying a company called Mamma.com would be selling their shares under market value, so he sold his to avoid losing money. It is illegal to use information that is not available to the public when selling stock. The charge has come in the form of a lawsuit that wants Cuban to forfeit the money he would have lost and also pay an additional penalty, so it is unclear if he could potentially receive time in prison (a la Martha Stewart). |
