Newsbreakers
November 30, 2008
Week 13 inactives: QB Brian Griese, WR Dexter Jackson, QB Josh Johnson (3rd), RB Noah Herron, DB Donte Nicholson, LB Matt McCoy, OT James Lee, DT Greg Peterson.

Our View:Wide receiver Ike Hilliard, tight end Alex Smith, safety Jermaine Phillips, and guard Aaron Sears are notable actives. With Smith back, fantasy owners can't count on Jerramy Stevens.
November 13, 2008
Brian Griese was a limited participant for the Bucs at practice on Thursday because of his injured elbow, according to The Pewter Report. "We're just trying to get the arm totally healed," said HC Jon Gruden. "We think he'll be okay, hopefully in a few days. We have plenty of quarterbacks to work with."

Our View:With Jeff Garcia doing a fine job, even when Griese is healthy all he will likely be asked to do is to fill the backup quarterback role. He is irrelevant at this point.
November 12, 2008
Brian Griese is not participating in Wednesday's practice, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View:He was previously practicing prior to today, and it is uncertain why he was absent. Either way, he holds no fantasy value as Jeff Garcia's backup.
November 2, 2008
QB Brian Griese, DB Dexter Jackson, DB Jermaine Phillips, RB Warrick Dunn, FB B.J. Askew, OG Aaron Sears, WR Maurice Stovall, and QB Josh Johnson are all inactive for today's game.

Our View:Griese holds no fantasy value while backing up Jeff Garcia. Michael Bennett will see an increased workload with Warrick Dunn out.
October 30, 2008
Brian Griese was back on the field on Thursday but only had limited participation, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View:Griese is battling a shoulder injury and will most likely be out again this week. Jeff Garcia will continue to be the starter.
October 12, 2008
Buccaneers inactives: QB Josh Johnson (3rd), QB Brian Griese, FB BJ Askew, LB Matt McCoy, T Anthony Davis, T James Lee, WR Joey Galloway, DT Greg Peterson.

Our View:Jeff Garcia starts in place of Brian Griese (elbow) and veteran wide receiver Joey Galloway (foot) is becoming a staple on this list.
October 10, 2008
Do not expect Bucs quarterback Brian Griese to play on Sunday, as he was at practice Friday, but tossing a football with his left arm, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View:Jeff Garcia will get the call in Griese's stead. Should he perform well, Griese may not have his starting job back.
October 6, 2008
Brian Griese is on shaky ground regarding his status as the Buccaneers' starting quarterback, according to the Tampa Tribune. When asked whether Griese would start Sunday against Carolina if he was cleared by the team’s medical staff, coach Jon Gruden stated, "Right now, we’re concerned about Griese’s arm, and we’re encouraged by Jeff Garcia's progress. Brian played pretty well, and Jeff did pretty well. Under the circumstances, both quarterbacks did some decent things." Griese was replaced by Garcia Sunday against Denver after injuring his right elbow and shoulder.

Our View:Even if he does remain the starter, Griese should not be considered for fantasy lineups, as he has thrown six interceptions with a poor 64.6 efficiency rating.
October 5, 2008
Brian Griese left the Bucs Week 5 loss early with an elbow bruise. Griese said it was his understanding that there is no structural damage in the elbow, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:Greise will undergo will wait for the swelling to go down until they make a decision on what kind of treatment he will have to receive.
October 5, 2008
Quarterback Brian Griese was shaken up during the third quarter of the Week 5 game against the Broncos. He left the field under his own power, but Jeff Garcia took his place. The early word is that Griese is questionable to return due to a right shoulder injury.

Our View:We saw with Aaron Rodgers last week how tricky it can be to assess a shoulder injury, and we won't be surprised if Garcia plays the rest of this contest.
September 29, 2008
Brian Griese threw three interceptions against the Packers, but coach Jon Gruden stated that he won't be benched for Jeff Garcia, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Griese's job is safe for now, but Gruden did add, "Garcia was our starter and might be our starter again at some point in time."

Our View:Griese lit up the Bears for 407 yards and two scores in a close win in Week 3, but holds a poor 62.5 efficiency rating, with four touchdown passes and six interceptions. Griese is not a favorable fantasy option, especially in leagues that enforce a heavy scoring penalty for turnovers.
September 23, 2008
Brian Griese has been nominated for the FedEx Air Player of the Week award after passing for 407 yards and two scores in a come from behind win over the Bears at Soldier Field, according to the Pewter Report. He set a franchise record with 67 passing attempts in the game.

Our View:Griese will likely remain the starter over Jeff Garcia, and merits a look on the waiver wire as a fantasy backup. Other nominees for the weekly honor are Jason Campbell (Washington) and Philip Rivers (San Diego).
September 21, 2008
Brian Griese completed 38-of-67 passes for 407 yards with two touchdowns against three interceptions in the Buccaneers Week 3 victory over Chicago.

Our View:Griese, who might have bought himself another week as the starter with this performance, will be a very popular commodity on the waiver wire this week.
September 15, 2008
The Buccaneers announced on Monday that Brian Griese will once again start at quarterback in Week 3. Griese led the club to a Week 2 win over the Falcons, and the team will travel to Chicago next Sunday. "I thought [Griese] did a nice job really," head coach Jon Gruden informs The Sports Network. "We had the one turnover late in the football game. He managed the offense. He made some great decisions in the running game. We won the football game. I thought he was solid. I thought he played pretty good."

Our View:Jeff Garcia has a (phantom?) sprained ankle and a (real?) sprained relationship with Gruden. This news isn't too shocking considering the rumors about the Bucs trying to trade Garcia. Griese should be very familiar with the Bears, but we have no reason to trust him in fantasy leagues.
September 14, 2008
In all likelihood, Brian Griese will be the starting quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their Week 3 game against Chicago, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:Griese was not spectacular in his team's Week 2 victory, throwing for 160 yards, and knowing Jon Gruden, should Griese come up short against the Bears, Jeff Garcia will once again be back in the mix.
September 14, 2008
Brian Griese did his job and managed the game for Tampa, hitting on 18 of 31 passes for 160 yards and one touchdown in his squad's 24-9 win over the Falcons.

Our View:Griese is not the type of quarterback that will usually put up huge numbers for fantasy owners, so avoiding him is probably a smart idea, unless you are desperate.
September 12, 2008
SI.com reports that there is a strong chance that Brian Griese will remain the starter at quarterback for Tampa Bay the rest of the season.

Our View:Griese has a good matchup with Atlanta this week and he holds some fantasy value long term. If you are desperate for a QB, he is not a terrible option.
September 10, 2008
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will start Brian Griese at quarterback for the injured Jeff Garcia Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View:Griese has some fantasy value, in part because he has a pretty good match-up against the Falcons, but Garcia's ankle injury isn't supposed to be a long-term issue, so only pick up Griese if you are desperate.
September 10, 2008
Brian Griese took first team snaps at the Buccaneers walkthrough on Wednesday, and neither he nor Jeff Garcia met with the media, so all the signs are there that Griese will be the starter Week 2, according to ESPN.com.

Our View:Garcia has an injured ankle and skipped the media session that he usually attends, adding to the speculation. More should be known by the end of the day on Wednesday.
August 28, 2008
Brian Griese has performed well enough in the preseason to be the Buccaneers' starter and has likely held off Luke McCown for the primary backup job behind Jeff Garcia, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Griese said, "It's a system I feel very comfortable in. There is a lot of responsibility put on the quarterback's lap to get in and out of the right plays, so I take a lot of pride in that. I enjoy that part of it, so it works well for me."

Our View:McCown has a superior arm to Griese, but has displayed poor decision-making in the preseason. McCown seems best suited to hold the clipboard as the No. 3 option this season.
August 16, 2008
Brian Griese will make the start for Tampa Bay when they take on New England during preseason action on Sunday, according to ESPN.com.

Our View:Griese is fighting with Luke McCown to be the backup to Jeff Garcia for the Buccaneers. As such, he has no fantasy value.
August 1, 2008
With Jeff Garcia possibly out of action for a week due to his strained calf, look for the club to turn to Luke McCown to take the majority of snaps and not Brian Griese, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View:Griese hasn't looked good in the early going and has clearly fallen behind McCown. Still, HC Jon Gruden is always messing with his quarterbacks, so other than Jeff Garcia starting, the backup role is far from clear.
March 3, 2008
The Buccaneers have acquired Brian Griese from the Bears in exchange for a sixth or seventh-round draft pick, the Chicago Tribune reports. He will likely be the primary backup to Jeff Garcia, although he'll need to fight for that job.
March 3, 2008
The Chicago Bears are expected to release quarterback Brian Griese today if they are unable to trade him, according to Fan Nation. Griese, who is due a $300,000 roster bonus today, could be headed back to Tampa Bay, as they are the only team who have expressed interest in his services.
February 28, 2008
The Chicago Bears are shopping quarterback Brian Griese before his $300,000 roster bonus comes due next Tuesday, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. ``Brian is extremely disappointed that he will not have the opportunity to be free to talk with whomever he wants,’’ said his agent Ralph Cindrich. ``There’s not any question whatsoever that would be his preference. But that’s what they’re doing.’’ Sounds like general manager Jerry Angelo is trying to get someone to throw him a second day bone in the NFL draft. That would seem unlikely, given the fact the team will almost certainly release Griese prior to the roster bonus deadline. The organization has already stated that Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton will battle for the starting job, so Griese is the odd man out.
February 26, 2008
Brian Griese could be cut next week before he is due a $300,000 roster bonus, according to ChicagoSports.com. The organization recently signed re-signed quarterbacks Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton, so it appears the Bears could draft a rookie later in the draft to hold down the third quarterback slot in 2008.
