Brian Griese completed 6-of-7 passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns on Friday night in the preseason opener. Griese out-played Rex Grossman by a good margin, but it's not clear if the door is actually open for Griese to win the starting job.

Brian Griese told reporters that he's going to enter 2006 with an eye on beating out Rex Grossman as the team's starter, according to the Chicago Tribune. Lovie Smith indicated in the same conference call that Grossman was still the team's No. 1 quarterback, but said he needed to perform in order to hold onto the job.

The Bengals talked to the agent of Brian Griese on Monday, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. They will talk again today about a possible contract. The Chicago Tribune reports that the Bears were also in serious discussions with the veteran quarterback on Monday, as well. Griese was released by the Bucs earlier this month.

The number of potential suitors for Brian Griese is dwindling know that the Dolphins, Saints and Lions have recently signed quarterbacks, according to the Tampa Tribune. Griese has drawn interest from the Ravens, and the Raiders still need a starter, but it's also possible that Griese will re-sign with the Bucs to back up Chris Simms.

Brian Griese will not restructure his contract to remain in Tampa unless the value remains the same, according to the St. Petersburg Times. He's owed a $2.6-million roster bonus in March, and his salary cap value will rise to more than $7-million this fall. The Bucs' priority is to sign Chris Simms to a long-term contract.
