Emmitt Smith, the NFL career rushing leader, announced his retirement on Thursday during a press conference in Jacksonville. He signed a ceremonial contract with the Cowboys on Thursday in order to retire as a member of the franchise.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that Emmitt Smith will retire today and join an investment group that is trying to buy the Vikings.

Although Emmitt Smith admitted he could have played his last game yesterday, he said he planned to talk it over with his family before making any decisions, according to the Arizona Republic. "It's not in my hands any longer," he said. "I can make a decision based upon whether I want to continue or not, but still somebody has to make a decision on whether or not they want me to continue. That part is out of my hands."
