The New England Patriots signed guard John Welbourn, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View:Welbourn is 32 years of age, but he started every game for the Kansas City Chiefs last year. He will likely be a backup behind starting guards Stephen Neal and Logan Mankins.

The Chiefs released veteran John Welbourn on Thursday, according to the Kansas City Star. Welbourn started every game for the Chiefs under performing offensive line last year. The move saves the Chiefs about $2 million against the salary cap. Welbourn, who retired last year before training camp, decided to return and play one more year - but had to serve a six-game suspension for violating the leagues substance abuse policy. The ex-Eagle is expected to announce his retirement sometime this spring.

John Welbourn has completed his six-game NFL suspension for violation of the league’s steroid policy, and he's set to practice with the Chiefs on Wednesday, according to the Kansas City Star. "I saw him today," coach Herm Edwards said Monday. "He’s in pretty good shape. Don’t know what kind of football shape, but pretty good. He’s got an exemption for two weeks where he’ll count as a 54th player." The earliest he'll play is Week 9 against the Rams.

John Welbourn, who was suspended for the first six weeks of the season for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing drugs, plans to practice with the Chiefs next week, according to ESPN.com. He is eligible to return on Oct. 23.

The Chiefs may be getting John Welbourn back in the mix to help out their offensive line, according to the KC Star. Welbourn retired over the summer before being suspended six weeks for violating the NFL's drug policy. He is scheduled to work out Oct. 23, after which the Chiefs will have two weeks to determine whether he's healthy enough to play.
