Updating an earlier story, Brian Westbrook's newly signed deal with the Eagles appears to include an additional $13 million over what he was scheduled to make the next couple of seasons, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Our View:Westbrook will make $21 million over the next three seasons and that he cold earn up to $24 million if certain individual performances levels are reached. None of this is official yet, but a "source" for the paper stands behind the figures.

Brian Westbrook has agreed to terms with the Philadephia Eagles on a new contract Friday, according to the AP. The Eagles did not disclose details of the agreement with Westbrook, who had been seeking a contract similar to the eight-year, $60 million contract that LaDainian Tomlinson signed with the San Diego in 2004. Coach Andy Reid said, "As I’ve said many times, I believe Brian Westbrook is the best running back in football. He can do it all from that position, whether it’s running, catching the football or blocking."

Our View:Westbrook got his new deal out of the way, and should resume his role as a top-5 fantasy running back this season.

Eagles rusher Brian Westbrook spoke with reporters today and indicates he is optimistic the Eagles and his agent will reach terms on a new contract agreement soon, according to PhiladelphiaEagles.com. While the Eagles' star running back focuses on football, his agent and the team's front office are working on the specifics to ensure a deal gets worked out. "I'm positive. I'm really optimistic about how things have been going," Westbrook said during his press conference on Wednesday.

Our View:Westbrook said that he could play as much as a quarter-and-a-half on Friday in Pittsburgh, but his time on the field hinges on what head coach Andy Reid wants. The preseason is not a time where No. 36 tries to shine. Fantasy owners agree and would prefer to see those efforts saved for games that matter. We'll keep you posted on his efforts to get paid.

Running back Brian Westbrook was excused from training camp practices on Saturday due to flu-like symptoms, according to Philly.com.

Our View:Coach Andy Reid sent Westbrook off the field fearing he would be contagious. We didn't want fantasy owners to worry, but it will likely be a few days before you see Westbrook struggling out in the heat (and that might be a relief for owners hoping to see their top commodity resting rather than straining).

Brian Westbrook stated that he wants a new contract before the start of the regular season, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. Westbrook is in camp, but when asked if he would participate in the first preseason game, August 8 at Pittsburgh, Westbrook said he would cross that bridge when he came to it.

Our View:Westbrook is the focal point of the Eagles' offense, and the team intends to ink him to a new deal, but it remains to be seen if it comes prior to Week 1 of the regular season.

Brian Westbrook is still looking for a new contract, but reported to training camp Thursday, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

Our View:Missing camp would have cost Westbrook a fine of $15,000 a day plus a prorated portion of his signing bonus. He considered not reporting, but opted to honor his commitment as a leader of the team.
July 23, 2008
With training camp set to commence and the Eagles looking to start on a positive note, reports from Philadelphia indicate the agent for rusher Brian Westbrook has contacted the team to suggest his client is worthy of a new contract paying $10 million per season for the first three years of the deal, according to ProFootballTalk.com.

Our View:The stories out of the city of brotherly love suggest Westbrook's decision to hire his new agent, Todd France, was based solely on France's assertions that he would get the 29-year-old rusher a certain level of compensation for his services, and now the time has come to see if he can live up to his word. Sources also report that several top NFL player agents withdrew their name from consideration for the opportunity to serve Westbrook after they heard the numbers he was set to demand, implicating such a deal is not likely to be found.
July 18, 2008
Brian Westbrook has decided to fire his agent (Fletcher Smith), which could potentially lead to the elite running back holding out from the start of training camp, according to the AP. Westbrook is currently unhappy with his current five-year, $25 million contract with the Eagles. Unable to negotiate a new deal, Westbrook fired Smith on Monday and is considering holding out from training camp, which opens Monday for rookies and selected veterans in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. According to the NFLPA, Westbrook cannot officially hire a new agent until Saturday, but Westbrook likely will name John Rickert as Smith’s replacement.

Our View:Westbrook knows how valuable he is to the Eagles' offense, and you cannot fault him for wanting a lucrative new deal. We will continue to monitor the situation heading up to training camp.

Brian Westbrook commented on his workload for the upcoming season, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. Westbrook said, "They haven’t talked to me about lightening my workload, or anything like that. I’m a fan of carrying the ball, and having the ball in my hands, but I also want the best for this team. I know sometimes it’s better to spread the ball, allow them to get the ball into different people’s hands so that we can present problems for a defense."

Our View:Westbrook should continue to be the focal point of the Eagles' offense, especially when you consider the news circulating that Donovan McNabb may have a shoulder ailment.

Eagles' offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said that the best thing for the team could be to use Brian Westbrook less, according to the PhillyBurbs.com. Mornhinweg commented, "We really leaned on him hard last year. We had to. We had no choice. We were forced to because of injuries. Donovan McNabb was just coming back, L.J. Smith was hurt, and Brian had such an unbelievable season. Two-thousand yards rushing and receiving. He did everything." Westbrook added, "I wouldn't mind it being the same. I think I've been very productive with the ball in my hands with that many touches. I think I can continue to do that. Of course, with us adding more playmakers like DeSean Jackson and guys like that, you need to get the ball in his hands, and Booker as well. You can try and do some different things that might take the ball a little bit out of my hands."

Our View:As dynamic and versatile as Westbrook is, Mornhinweg believes the Eagles grew predictable last year. Westbrook racked up 2104 total yards and 12 touchdowns in 2007, but the Eagles only finished 17th in the NFL in scoring. That's why Mornhinweg thinks more balance will not only help the offense become less predictable but will also make Westbrook more dangerous. While Westbrook will be hard-pressed to put up the numbers he did last year, he should still remain an elite fantasy back. Less touches also limit the risk of injury, as Westbrook is still only 5-10 203 pounds.
