July 22, 2008 The San Francisco 49ers have signed rookie cornerback Reggie Smith , the team's 3rd-round draft pick this season, according to NinersNation.com.
Our View:Smith will have a good opportunity to battle for starting snaps in a defensive system that will utilize a number of package schemes this season. His true role remains to be determined in training camp, but it appears the Niners are excited to have him in the mix. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
May 2, 2008 The San Francisco 49ers envision third round rookie cornerback Reggie Smith as a candidate to eventually take over for Walt Harris on the side opposite Nate Clements, according to USA Today. "I don't feel comfortable with the depth that we have right now because of the durability issues that we have," head coach Mike Nolan said. "I love Walt (Harris) to death, but he's getting up there (in age) and practices only one day a week."
Our View:Smith is a player that can play both corner and safety, though the 49ers will likely play him at the nickel position to start out his career. He lacks elite speed, but hides a lot of flaws by being a solid tackler.
