Our View:He scored a point in three straight games, and notched two goals for the second time this season.
November 17, 2008
Barry Melrose was fired as Tampa Bay head coach, and the St. Petersburg Times reports that he thinks the players complained to ownership about him. "Obviously, a lot of guys didn't like to be held accountable with this team. ... Now they can play who they want and how much they want and when they want and (not) demand a lot of them," Melrose said.

Our View:Melrose did not mention any specific players, and the team's ownership denied the reports of the inmates running the asylum.
November 16, 2008
The Lightning have a new coach, but the result for them was the same, as they lost to the Carolina Hurricanes, 3-2. Vincent Lecavalier scored his seventh goal of the year in the contest.

Our View:Tampa took the game to overtime, but lost in a shootout. Lecavalier now has 12 points in 17 games on the year.
November 14, 2008
In a shocking move, Barry Melrose has been fired by the Tampa Bay Lightning just 16 games into the season, according to TSN. He will be replaced by associate coach Rick Tocchet.

Our View:The Bolts have gone 4-5-1 in their last 10 games and are currently tied for 10th in the Eastern Conference with 14 points. The team has certainly underachieved, but that's what happens when you bring in basically an entire new roster of players. The Lightning are almost ready to enter Oakland Raiders territory in terms of stupidity, and that certainly isn't a club you want to be a part of.
November 2, 2008
The ice time for Lightning stars Vincent Lecavalier and Martin St. Louis are seeing less ice time this year than they did in the past, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:Lecavalier is down about three and a half minutes, and St. Louis is down about three minutes. Lecavalier has still been productive for fantasy owners, with five goals and three assists in nine games.
November 1, 2008
Vincent Lecavalier scored his sixth goal of the season in Saturday's 3-2 shootout win over Ottawa.

Our View:Lecavalier is hot with three goals and two assists over his last three games. Three of his six goals have been scored on the power-play.

October 11, 2008
Center Vincent Lecavalier scored his first goal of the season on Saturday night. His effort put the Lightning up 3-0 during the second period, but they went on to lose 4-3.

Our View:Hopefully this is a sign that Lecavalier is beginning to find his rhythm. It's nice to see the Lightning finish with more than one goal for the first time this season.
October 1, 2008
ESPN.com reports that Vincent Lecavalier still isn't close to being top-notch as he tries to recover from offseason shoulder surgery. He showed some frustration Tuesday night as he continues to struggle with his timing and conditioning. But the good news is, he said those issues have nothing to do with the shoulder, which he says is feeling better every day.

Our View:This would point to a slow start for the 92-point center but expect him to get in the flow very soon after the start of the season.
September 30, 2008
Vincent Lecavalier and Jussi Jokinen scored in the shootout to help the Lightning beat HC Slovan Bratislava of Slovakia 3-2 in the first ever preseason game between an NHL club and a Slovakian one.

Our View:Lecavlier appears to be fully ready to go for Game 1 despite the shoulder he had surgery on during the off-season. This was the second of two preseason games in Europe for the Lightning who will play their first two regular season games against the Rangers.
September 26, 2008
Vincent Lecavalier will return ahead of schedule from his off-season shoulder surgery by playing on Sunday night, according to the St. Petersberg Times. "My goal is to play on Sunday so I can start testing getting hit," Lecavalier said.

Our View:Lecavalier was said to be targeting the final two preseason games for his return, but he is beating that estimate if he suits up this weekend. This is great news and just another reason why it's totally fine to select Lecavalier early in all fantasy drafts.
September 25, 2008
Vincent Lecavalier believes he will be able to skate in the team's first game of the regular season as he attempts to work his way back from right shoulder surgery, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:The team is obviously being cautious with their captain as what happens in October is obviously much less important that what happens in April and May. Look for Lecavalier to be limited somewhat in the early going, but this isn't enough of a concern to knock him out of the top 10-15 fantasy selections.
September 18, 2008
Vincent Lecavalier was named captain on Thursday by the Tampa Bay Lightning, the second time he has been so honored, according to TSN.

Our View:Lecavalier was the clubs captain for parts of the 1999 and 2001 seasons, but the team wanted him to mature as a player before putting that type of pressure back on him. With his excellence on ice, and his dedication off it, he is clearly ready for the challenge.
September 16, 2008
The Tampa Bay Lightning will open training camp on Tuesday with a plethora of new faces, according to the Tampa Tribune. "It's very strange, there are a lot of new guys," said Vincent Lecavalier.

Our View:One of those new guys is former ESPN NHL analyst Barry Melrose, who will coach the squad. Lecavalier will remain a fantasy force despite the changes and his shoulder surgery.
September 12, 2008
Vincent Lecavalier had arthroscopic surgery on his shoulder this off-season, and though his recovery has gone as planned, he could end up missing all but the last two games of the Lightning's preseason schedule, according to the St. Petersberg Times. My goal is to play the last two games," he said. "I just started again this week and it feels pretty good for slap shots and wristers," he said. "It's mostly when the puck is far away, reaching, it feels a little weak."

Our View:We believe Lecavalier will be ready to rumble in game one and that he has a great shot at a third straight 90+ point campaign with the Bolts. Stay tuned for updates, but this news doesn't do much other than knocks him down a spot or two on draft boards.
September 1, 2008
Vincent Lecavalier is recovering from shoulder surgery, but is back on the ice in Tampa and feels well, except that he finds it difficult to take slap shots, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View:Lecavalier's health is an issue, but fantasy owners should still covet him come draft time. Even if he is at less than 100 percent to start the season, he should be healthy enough to contribute before he fully recovers.
August 28, 2008
Vincent Lecavalier came out of the locker room Thursday to take his first skate at the Ice Sports Forum in Brandon in preparation for the upcoming training camp, took one step onto the ice and fell on his face, according to the St. Petersburg Times. He said, "As I started walking on the ice, I was ,like, 'Oh, no. When I put my skates on, I saw them and said, 'Oh,' and took one off. And I started talking to somebody else. I forgot about my left one." Lecavalier had forgotten to take the skate guard off his left skate, which caused him to comically fall on the ice.

Our View:On a more serious note, Lecavalier met Wednesday with Dr. James Andrews, who did the arthroscopic surgery on Lecavalier's right shoulder to repair a torn labrum. Andrews is pleased with his progress, though he has not been cleared for contact.

July 11, 2008
Vincent Lecavalier's new deal may be worth less than the $77 million that was initially reported, according to the Tampa Tribune. Lightning VP Brian Lawton indicated that the reported figure was presumptuous and added, "The numbers are not as advertised. We are putting the final touches on it. Everything you have read and all that's been reported in the media, they are all false. We'll announce it all next week."

Our View:The official deal is expected to be announced on Tuesday.

Vincent Lecavalier won the King Clancy award on Thursday night awarded to the player who combines on ice efforts with off-ice contributions in the community, according to TSN.

Our View:Lecavalier scored 40 goals and 92 points on ice, and off it he donated $3 million to help construct a center for pediatric blood disorders. Way to go Vincent, you're an athlete people of all ages can look up to, so don't be afraid to purchase a Lecavalier jersey, it's a keeper.
June 4, 2008

June 1, 2008
The Lightning continue to talk with Vincent Lecavalier about a contract extension, the Tampa Tribune reports. Lecavalier shares an agent (Kent Hughes) with Luc Bourdon, who was killed in a motorcycle accident on Thursday.

Our View:As one might imagine, Hughes has had more important issues to deal with. We expect the two sides to hammer out a new contract in the near future, and Lecavalier will continue to be a fantasy stud.
May 31, 2008
The Tampa Bay Lightning are hoping to announce current ESPN analyst Barry Melrose as their new coach soon, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View:The Tribune quotes reporter Damien Cox of the Toronto Star who claims to have spoken with Lightning owner Oren Koules, set to take control of the team following a Board of Governors meeting on June 18th. Koules is said to be in full support of offering Melrose an enticing $2 million-per-season contract and luring the former Kings coach to Florida. Melrose has avoided comment on the reports, but we await that date for things to progress and find no reason to believe this will not come to fruition.

Medical testing revealed Lecavalier suffered damage to the Glenoid Labrum of the right shoulder, and recovery will require 12 to 15 weeks. The procedure has not been officially schedule at this time.
April 3, 2008
Not surprisingly, Vincent Lecavalier has been ruled out of Saturday's season finale after suffering a shoulder injury Thursday, according to the Canadian Press. Tampa Bay coach John Tortorella was not happy about the hit on his star. ''It's an absolute cheap shot,'' he said. ''We have stick fouls - stick foul after stick foul - and then I see that. It's a guy in a vulnerable position. It's an interference if the puck isn't anywhere near him, and that isn't called. It's an absolute cheap shot.'' Vinny ends the year with 92 points in 81 games.
