November 10, 2008 Mike Van Ryn could be out longer than the previously estimated 4-6 weeks, according to the Toronto Sun. He is dealing with a concussion, broken finger, and recovery from dental surgery. GM Cliff Fletcher said, "We know the hand injury will sideline him four to six weeks. As for the concussion, he has headaches, we have to wait for him to see the specialist to get an idea of what the future holds."
Our View:Van Ryn will be missed, as the defenseman contributed three goals and five assists over 14 contests.
November 9, 2008 Mike Van Ryn will miss around a month due to multiple injuries sustained from a hit from Tom Kostopoulos on Saturday night, according to the Toronto Star. Van Ryn ended up with a concussion, a broken nose, and a broken hand.
Our View:The hit was a dirty one and resulted in a five minute power play for the Leafs. It is not yet known if Kostopoulos will be suspended by the league for the hit, but it's fairly likely that he will as the NHL is trying to crack down on these types of plays.
November 8, 2008 The AP reports that defenseman Mike Van Ryn left Saturday’s game against the Montreal Canadiens in the first period after he was on the receiving end of a hit from Tom Kostopoulos. Van Ryn collapsed to the ice and was bleeding from his head. He was helped off the ice and sent to the locker room.
Our View:Van Ryn has played very well this season with eight points, including four on the power play. It is currently unknown how severe the injury is.
