September 17, 2008 Ryan Whitney was walking without the aid of crutches at the start of training camp in Pittsburgh, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He underwent surgery to correct his left foot August 15, and believes his recovery is coming along favorably. He added, "I saw the doctor last week, and he said the X-rays look fantastic and the scars are healing nicely. I see him again in 2 1/2 weeks. Then you can really start strengthening it and do more weight-bearing exercises."
Our View:Whitney is hoping after his next doctor visit he'll have a better idea of when he can start skating and set an exact timetable for returning. As of now, he is expected to be out at least until mid-November and perhaps until January.
August 16, 2008 Penguins defenseman Ryan Whitney had surgery to correct an undisclosed chronic foot problem, according to the AP. The surgery will keep him off the ice for three to five months.
Our View:Whitney was a solid fantasy blue-liner, accumulating 40 points last season and 59 the season prior to that. This injury means it's possible he could be out until '09.
February 22, 2008 Ryan Whitney had a goal and two assists on Thursday night in the Penguins victory over the Habs. Whitney now has 12 goals on the year, just two less than last season, but he has just 20 assists a year after totaling 45. Even worse, Whitney's production with the man advantage has really suffered as he has only 17 PP points this year a year after totaling 33.
