"If this was the playoffs, it would probably be a totally different story, but we want to be careful with him."

Joe Sakic said he will decide soon regarding his decision to play or retire, according to SI.com. He commented, "I needed some extra time this year. It's been a very, very difficult decision to make. I'm hoping to have something here in the next couple of weeks, make my final decision and go forward with it. I should make my final decision pretty soon. Whatever that is, I want to make sure it's 100 percent sure."

June 24, 2008
Joe Sakic won't make a decision regarding his playing status before July 1, according to the Denver Post.

Our View:Sakic made $6.75 million in 2007-08 and likely would continue to make something in that range in a new deal. If Sakic decided to retire before July 1, Colorado GM Francois Giguere would have that much more money freed up under the salary cap. If Sakic retired well after July 1, the top NHL free agents could be gone. While he could compromise the team's free agency spending plans, VP Jean Martineau stated that Sakic has earned the right to take his time with his decision.

We told him that we would wait for when he would be ready to let us know."

Our View:Sakic, who turns 39 in July, is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, but will either re-sign with Colorado or retire. He can still get the job done, as he scored 40 points over 44 games in 2007-08.
June 16, 2008
Joe Sakic still hasn't decided if he will return for a 20th NHL season, according to the Denver Post. "Joe has not told me of any decision yet, and I assume that means he hasn't told the team anything yet," Don Baizley, his agent, said.

Our View:Sakic is coming off a rough season abbreviated by injury, but he was his normal high scoring self when on the ice with 40 points in 44 games. Sakic can still play, so it would be a shame to see him end his HOF career when he still has gas left in the tank.

May 1, 2008
Joe Sakic may or may not return for another season, but if this was his final game he acquitted himself well with two assists in a Game 4 loss to the Red Wings.

"Every day has felt a little better, and things felt pretty good today, so we'll see. I want to play, for sure, but it'll be up to the trainers before I get the full go-ahead." Consider Sakic, who is recovering from heria surgery, to be a game-time call Sunday.

"It's encouraging to see the progress he's making, and that he's not so far away." Even though he's pushing 40, Sakic is still an elite offensive player.

Joe Sakic returned to the ice on Monday as he skated prior to the Avalanche's practice according to the AP.
