Former NHLer Martin dies in drowning accident Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Hubert "Pit" Martin, who spent 18 years in the
NHL with four clubs, including more than 10 seasons with the Chicago
Blackhawks, passed away Monday after a drowning incident in Canada.
The 64-year-old Martin was riding his snowmobile with a friend on Sunday on a
lake in northern Quebec near his hometown of Rouyn-Noranda, when his vehicle
fell through an area of thin ice. Martin was plunged into the icy water and
did not surface. He was pronounced dead on Monday.

Former defenseman Brad McCrimmon has signed a three-year deal with the Red Wings to serve as an assistant coach, according to the Detroit Free Press.
Our View:McCrimmon spent four seasons as an assistant coach in Atlanta and previously was on coaching staffs with Calgary and the New York Islanders. He played 18 seasons in the NHL, including three seasons in Detroit in the early 1990's.
The Sports Ticker reports that the Detroit Red Wings signed 24-year-old free agent center Valtteri Filppula to a five-year contract worth $15 million.
Our View:Last season, he recorded 19 goals and 17 assists in 78 games with Detroit and he should improve upon those numbers in the upcoming campaign. Any center in Detroit's offense warrants fantasy consideration.
Jonathan Ericsson has re-signed with Detroit, according to the AP. He agreed to a three-year deal, and will make $550,000 next season.
Our View:The defenseman scored one goal with four penalty minutes over eight games with Detroit last season, with his lone score coming on the power-play. He could see more action with the team next season, but isn't likely going to be fantasy worthy.
