NEWSBREAKERS MLB
Pedro officially ruled out for TuesdaySaturday 7/19, 11:54 PM CT
Pedro Martinez has officially been ruled out for Tuesday's start, according to Newsday. Pedro is dealing with a groin injury.

Our View: Johan Santana will start Tuesday instead, with John Maine getting the ball Wednesday and Oliver Perez on Thursday. Assuming he doesn't have any setbacks, Pedro should be back next weekend against the Cardinals.
Nady back with teamSaturday 7/19, 11:46 PM CT
Xavier Nady got a pinch-hit single in Saturday's loss to Colorado. Nady had been away from the team due to the birth of his son.

Our View: When should see X back in the starting lineup on Sunday.
Salty expected to return MondaySaturday 7/19, 11:42 PM CT
Jarrod Saltalamacchia will probably return on Monday, according to the AP. He is recovering from a groin strain and more recently from the flu.

Our View: Taylor Teagarden will likely be sent down once Salty is ready.
Bradley won't play field until MondaySaturday 7/19, 11:40 PM CT
Manager Ron Washington plans to wait until at least Monday before playing Milton Bradley in the outfield, according to the AP. Bradley's time in the outfield has been limited this year as he is coming back from knee surgery.

Our View: Milton has played 19 games in the outfield this year, so unless you require a crazy number of games to be eligible at a position, he'll be eligible in the outfield next season.
Tulowitzki could be back MondaySaturday 7/19, 11:25 PM CT
Troy Tulowitzki could be activated from the DL Monday, manager Clint Hurdle told the AP. He is out with a right hand laceration.

Our View: The Rockies offense has been red-hot lately, and getting Tulo back could allow them to crawl back into the NL West race.
Big Papi homers again in rehab gameSaturday 7/19, 11:21 PM CT
David Ortiz belted his third home run Saturday in as many rehab games for Triple-A Pawtucket. Big Papi has been sidelined since he partially tore the tendon sheath in his left wrist.

Our View: Ortiz will take tomorrow off and then go to Double-A Portland for three rehab games. He should be back with the Sox by late next week.
Zimmerman slated for Tuesday returnSaturday 7/19, 10:53 PM CT
The Nationals plan to activate Ryan Zimmerman from the DL on Tuesday. He will replace Dmitri Young on the roster. Zimmerman is coming back from a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder.

Our View: Hopefully Ryan isn't hindered at all by the shoulder in the second half. He wasn't hitting well before going down with the injury.
Young lands on DLSaturday 7/19, 10:48 PM CT
The Nats placed Dmitri Young on the DL Saturday in an effort to get Young's diabetes under control. He has been unable to play the last two games because lightheadedness and an inability to focus.

Our View: The Nats plan to activate Ryan Zimmerman from the DL to replace Young on the roster.
Hernandez hits game-tying homer in ninthSaturday 7/19, 10:39 PM CT
Ramon Hernandez hit a game-tying solo homer off the Tigers' Joel Zumaya in the ninth inning Saturday. It was Ramon's second hit of the game, which was won by the O's in the 10th.

Our View: A lot of people like Hernandez to bounce back this year. It hasn't happened, but hopefully this will get him turned in the right direction.
Robertson's struggles continueSaturday 7/19, 10:34 PM CT
Nate Robertson was staked to a 6-0 lead before he even toed the rubber Saturday, but the southpaw squandered it, allowing seven runs on eight hits over 2 1/3 innings.

Our View: Given Nate's performance this year, this outing isn't altogether surprising. His ERA sits at 5.69, and he's fallen a long ways since his solid 2006 season.
Zumaya blows saveSaturday 7/19, 10:26 PM CT
Joel Zumaya was given a chance to close out the win for the Tigers Saturday. Whoops. The flamethrower served up a game-tying homer to Ramon Hernandez, and Detroit ultimately lost the game in the 10th.

Our View: In fairness, Joel was mowing 'em down before giving up the tater, as he struck out four of the first five batters he faced. His ERA still sits at a nifty 1.77, but he has been prone to wildness (13 walks in 14 1/3 innings). It's possible Zumaya could see some more save opportunities in the second half if the Tigers realize that Todd Jones is, in fact, Todd Jones.
De La Rosa superb SaturdaySaturday 7/19, 10:20 PM CT
Jorge De La Rosa was on his game Saturday, allowing just one run on seven hits and two walks while striking out seven over six innings in a 7-1 win over Pittsburgh.

Our View: De La Rosa might have saved his spot in the rotation with this effort. Don't expect him to look like this next week in Cincy, though.
Herrera isn't ready for the showSaturday 7/19, 10:17 PM CT
Yoslan Herrera was rocked for seven runs on eight hits in just 1 2/3 innings Saturday in a loss to Colorado.

Our View: The Cuban defector holds an ugly 19.50 ERA in two outings. Expect him to be sent down soon.
Fogg solid for Reds againSaturday 7/19, 10:15 PM CT
Josh Fogg was terrific again for the Reds Saturday, allowing just one run on eight hits and a walk while striking out one over six innings in a win over the Mets.

Our View: Fogg has been terrific since filling in for the injured Aaron Harang, posting a 2.55 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in three starts. He'll get the Rockies at home next week.
Wright homers in lossSaturday 7/19, 10:10 PM CT
David Wright had three hits, including his 19th homer of the year, in the Mets' loss to the Reds Saturday.

Our View: Wright's steals have been down, but he's on pace to set a new career high in homers this year.
Haren terrific over sevenSaturday 7/19, 10:04 PM CT
Dan Haren kept the Dodgers' bats in check Saturday, tossing seven scoreless innings while allowing four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.

Our View: Brandon Lyon tried to blow Haren's win in the ninth but hung on. Haren is 9-5 on the year.
Lannan goes six strongSaturday 7/19, 10:01 PM CT
John Lannan put together a nice effort against the Braves Saturday, allowing just one run on seven hits and three walks while striking out four over six innings.

Our View: The lefty is 6-9 on the year, but his 3.29 ERA over 19 starts has been one of the few positive storylines for the Nats this season.
Wandy keeps Cubs' bats silentSaturday 7/19, 9:57 PM CT
Wandy Rodriguez befuddled the Cubs hitters Saturday, allowing one run on nine hits and no walks while striking out seven over 6 2/3 innings.

Our View: Well, Wandy was at home... what did you expect? The southpaw always looks like an ace at Minute Maid.
Big Z walks six in loss to AstrosSaturday 7/19, 9:54 PM CT
Carlos Zambrano's first start of the second half didn't go so well. He allowed four runs on six hits and six walks over 6 1/3 innings. The only thing he did well was hit a solo homer, his second of the season. It was the only offense the Cubs could muster off Wandy Rodriguez in the 4-1 loss.

Our View: Big Z had been doing a great job at limiting the free passes this year, so his wildness Saturday was disappointing.
Hernandez picks up 10th winSaturday 7/19, 9:51 PM CT
Who needs Francisco Liriano? Livan Hernandez held the Rangers to two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out a pair over seven innings Saturday to pick up his 10th win of the season.

Our View: The 10 wins are nice, but there's no hiding the fact that Livan has been horrible this year, with a 5.29 ERA, 3.3 K/9 rate and 12.5 H/9 rate. We still expect Liriano to replace him in the rotation before long.
Harrison lit up againSaturday 7/19, 9:48 PM CT
Matt Harrison was ripped for eight runs on nine hits and three walks over five inning Saturday. His ERA ballooned to 9.20.

Our View: The lefty looked good in his first big league outing but has been shelled the last two times out. A demotion could be coming.
Young hits rare homerSaturday 7/19, 9:46 PM CT
Delmon Young was 3-for-5 with a homer, two runs and two RBI Saturday. The dinger was just his fourth of the year.

Our View: Young has two homers this month, which we suppose could be considered a power surge for him. He is batting .350 since June 1, but his lack of pop this year has been discouraging.
Morneau homers, drives in fiveSaturday 7/19, 9:42 PM CT
Justin Morneau homered and drove in five runs in Saturday's blowout win over Texas. He it hitting .325-15-72 on the year.

Our View: The 15 bombs are a bit of a low total for Justin, but his owners certainly can't be upset at the level of production he's given them.
Davis goes yard againSaturday 7/19, 9:40 PM CT
Chris Davis went deep again Saturday, hitting a two-run shot off the Twins' Livan Hernandez in the second inning. Davis has seven bombs in just 64 at-bats since being recalled.

Our View: Davis is batting just .250, but he's certainly made up for it with power. The team has decided to put Hank Blalock back at third, so Davis' job is safe for now.
Meche holds White Sox in checkSaturday 7/19, 9:20 PM CT
Gil Meche mowed down the White Sox Saturday, allowing just one run on two hits and a walk while striking out six over 6 1/3 innings.

Our View: Maybe Gil was peeved that manager Trey Hillman "demoted" him to the No. 2 starter role.
Butler goes deep againSaturday 7/19, 9:17 PM CT
Billy Butler went deep Saturday for the second straight game, a three-run shot of White Sox reliever Nick Masset. He also added a single.

Our View: Butler has been a big disappointment at the plate this year, so hopefully this is a sign of things to come.
Doc knocked aroundSaturday 7/19, 9:06 PM CT
Roy Halladay was knocked around by the Rays Saturday, allowing five runs on eight hits and three walks over six innings.

Our View: Even Doc is human. Expect him to be back in top form next week in Baltimore.
Garza dominates JaysSaturday 7/19, 9:03 PM CT
Matt Garza shut out the Blue Jays over 7 2/3 innings Saturday, allowing just two hits and no walks while striking out six.

Our View: It's good to see Matt rebound from his poorest outing of the year. He's been terrific since May.
Longoria hits first grand slamSaturday 7/19, 9:01 PM CT
Evan Longoria hit his first career grand slam in Saturday's 6-4 win over Toronto. The rookie now has 17 dingers and 57 RBI on the year, to go along with a .272 batting average.

Our View: Longoria has been all the Rays and fantasy owners could have hoped for in his rookie season. The 17 homers are even more impressive when you consider he spent the first couple weeks in the minors.
Escobar could be DL-boundSaturday 7/19, 8:58 PM CT
Yunel Escobar could be headed to the DL, as he just can't get over his left shoulder injury. The shortstop will be evaluated by team physician Dr. Xavier Duralde on Sunday, at which time the Braves will determine whether they need to place him on the disabled list, according to MLB.com. "He wants to play, and that's great," GM Frank Wren said. "But at the same time, we don't want him to jeopardize the rest of the season by playing a day or two too early."

Our View: We expect Escobar to land on the DL, as the Braves need to clear a roster spot for Rafael Soriano. He would be eligible to return next Friday.
Soriano slated to come off DL MondaySaturday 7/19, 8:55 PM CT
Rafael Soriano completed a short bullpen session Saturday and is expected to be activated from the DL on Monday, according to MLB.com. He has been out since June 5 with right elbow inflammation. "He threw [Saturday] and felt very good," GM Frank Wren said. "[Braves pitching coach] Roger [McDowell] said that he threw good."

Our View: With Mike Gonzalez dominating, Soriano will probably slide into a setup role.
Buckner recalled from Triple-ASaturday 7/19, 8:25 PM CT
The D'Backs recalled Billy Buckner from Triple-A Tucson Saturday to replace the injured Doug Slaten on the roster. Buckner allowed two runs in 2 2/3 innings earlier this year with the D'Backs. He holds a 4.73 ERA in 19 starts with Tucson.

Our View: Buckner will work as a long man out of the pen. He holds no fantasy value.
Slated placed on DLSaturday 7/19, 8:23 PM CT
The D'Backs placed Doug Slaten on the DL Saturday with a strained right knee. Billy Buckner was recalled to replace him on the roster.

Our View: Arizona will be without a southpaw in their pen for the time being.
Brewers to announce trade tomorrowSaturday 7/19, 8:21 PM CT
The Brewers are expected to announce a trade tomorrow, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. It is expected to be with the Giants and involve either Ray Durham, Jack Taschner, or both. The Brewers will send outfield prospect Darren Ford to San Francisco, but it's not clear if he is the only player Milwaukee is giving up.

Our View: Durham would help out at second base with Rickie Weeks scuffling, while Taschner would give the team another lefty out of the bullpen.
Matthews has tear in kneeSaturday 7/19, 8:16 PM CT
Gary Matthews Jr. has a slight tear in his left knee, but at this point there are no plans for surgery or to place him on the disabled list, according to the AP. "The plan now is to continue to treat it and strengthen it," Matthews said. "Sooner or later, hope it gets better; probably a little more aggressive with the treatment. It's a lengthy surgery to have, we don't feel the surgery is completely necessary. If it blows out and becomes detached, you have to have the surgery, no choice."

Our View: Matthews has started only one of the last seven games and is five for his last 36, so this has clearly affected him at the plate. He'll play through it, but don't expect a big second half.
Bankston has to exit after cramping upSaturday 7/19, 7:38 PM CT
Wes Bankston began cramping up late in Saturday's game and was pulled for a pinch-hitter, according to the AP.

Our View: This shouldn't be anything that would keep Bankston out of the lineup, but we'll keep you posted.
Damon says he's good to goSaturday 7/19, 7:36 PM CT
Johnny Damon pronounced himself ready to come off the disabled list Sunday as a DH after a successful batting practice session Saturday, according to the AP. However, the Yankees are still undecided as to whether to activate him. He's been out with a shoulder injury.

Our View: It sounds like you'll be able to stick Johnny back into your lineups for the upcoming week.
Blister problems could land Wood on DLSaturday 7/19, 7:31 PM CT
The blister on Kerry Wood's right index finger could force the closer to the DL, according to MLB.com. "With Woody, the news wasn't good," manager Lou Piniella said. "He threw today, and he's still not ready, so we're going to ride this thing out as long as we can and hope that we'll get some good results from it a few days from now. We'll close with either [Carlos] Marmol or [Bob] Howry."

Our View: Well, at least Kerry isn't having elbow problems or anything. Still, blister problems can linger, and the Cubbies won't rush Wood back.
Pedro not expected to start TuesdaySaturday 7/19, 7:27 PM CT
The Mets were thinking about holding Pedro Martinez back from Tuesday's start even before his bullpen session Saturday was delayed. According to MLB.com, it is all but understood that Johan Santana would start Tuesday instead, with John Maine getting the ball Wednesday and Oliver Perez on Thursday. Pedro is dealing with a groin injury.

Our View: The Mets don't want to take any chances with Pedro, especially in a game against the Phillies. He could be back next weekend against the Cardinals.
Milledge to begin rehab assignment SundaySaturday 7/19, 7:22 PM CT
Lastings Milledge will begin a rehab assignment Sunday with the rookie Gulf Coast League, according to MLB.com. He has been on the disabled list since June 28 with a strained right groin. "He's running the bases, he's ready to start his rehab tomorrow," manager Manny Acta said.

Our View: The Nats gave no timetable for the outfielder's return, but one would think he could return in a week or so if all goes well.
Young sits out againSaturday 7/19, 7:19 PM CT
Dmitri Young missed his second straight game Saturday because of symptoms related to high blood sugar, according to MLB.com. A diabetic, Young complained of feeling lightheaded and had difficulty focusing when he arrived at Turner Field Saturday. "[He's] pretty much the same," manager Manny Acta said. "He's still not feeling well enough to play."

Our View: Paul Lo Duca started again at first in Young's place. Hopefully Dmirti is feeling well enough to play tomorrow.
Glavine has successful bullpen sessionSaturday 7/19, 7:16 PM CT
Tom Glavine completed a modified bullpen session Saturday without any setbacks, according to MLB.com. It was the first time he'd thrown off a mound since landing on the DL with an elbow injury. "It went about as well as I thought it would go," Glavine said. "I actually threw pretty good, considering I hadn't pitched [since June 10]. All in all, it went pretty well."

Our View: Glavine hopes to return to the Braves' rotation by mid August. If he has any setbacks, he'll likely undergo surgery with the intention of giving himself an option to pitch again next year.
Stewart to play third while Helton is outSaturday 7/19, 7:07 PM CT
Ian Stewart will be the regular third baseman until Todd Helton returns from the DL. Garrett Atkins will slide over the diamond to handle first, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Helton is expected to be out a while longer, and the promising Stewart would be a savvy pick-up for owners hoping to catch lightning in a bottle.
Vizquel leaves with foot injurySaturday 7/19, 7:03 PM CT
Omar Vizquel exited Saturday's game in the sixth inning with an apparent foot injury, according to the AP. Ivan Ochoa replaced him in the lineup.

Our View: We doubt the Giants would shed any tears if they have to place the veteran on the DL. He's batting just .167 on the year, though he did have a pair of hits Saturday before leaving.
Choo homers, doubles twiceSaturday 7/19, 6:58 PM CT
Shin-Soo Choo had two doubles and a two-run homer in the Indians' win Saturday.

Our View: Choo needed this, as he hasn't been hitting a lick this month.
Batista blasted for eight runsSaturday 7/19, 6:51 PM CT
Miguel Batista was blasted for eight runs on seven hits and a walk in just two innings Saturday.

Our View: Batista came out of his last outing with a groin injury, so perhaps it was still bothering him a bit. Or it could just be that Miguel is simply not very good.
Baker making case for more playing timeSaturday 7/19, 6:42 PM CT
John Baker made a case to be the Marlins' regular behind the plate Saturday with a three-run homer and an RBI single in the team's win over the Phillies.

Our View: The Fish have been pleased with Baker's handling of the pitchers, and he's given them a bit of offense in his 19 at-bats. NL-only owners might want to take a look at him.
Cantu picks up four hitsSaturday 7/19, 6:34 PM CT
Jorge Cantu had four hits and two RBI in the Marlins' win over the Phillies Saturday. He is hitting .393 with four homers and 10 RBI this month.

Our View: Cantu continues to be a surprise fantasy producer for his lucky owners.
Pat the Bat belts two dingersSaturday 7/19, 6:23 PM CT
Pat Burrell had a pair of solo homers and a double in the Phillies' loss to the Marlins Saturday. He now has 25 bombs on the year.

Our View: Apparently Pat the Bat is still seething over his All-Star snub. He's batting .280 with 59 RBI to go along with his 25 dingers.
Wolf can't hold leadSaturday 7/19, 6:19 PM CT
Randy Wolf was staked to a 5-0 lead Saturday but couldn't hold it. The lefty allowed six runs (four earned) on eight hits and two walks over 5 2/3 innings.

Our View: The Wolfman has now allowed six runs in consecutive starts. The Padres would like to deal him before the deadline, but he's not doing anything for his value with his performance lately.
Wellemeyer guts it out and picks up WSaturday 7/19, 6:17 PM CT
Todd Wellemeyer allowed five runs in the first two innings Saturday but then settled in, holding the Padres scoreless over the next 4 1/3 frames to pick up his eighth win in the Cards' 6-5 victory.

Our View: Wellemeyer has had a rough go of it in July, and Saturday's outing was shaping up to be another dud. He gutted it out, though, and hopefully he can carry the positive momentum into his next outing.
Gonzalez continues surprising playSaturday 7/19, 6:11 PM CT
Edgar Gonzalez continued his surprising hitting Saturday, belting a three-run homer and picking up another hit in the Pads' 6-5 loss to the Cardinals Saturday. He is hitting .309-5-20 in 175 at-bats this year.

Our View: Adrian's big brother is making a case to be owned in mixed leagues, but we have a feeling he's due for a rough patch.
Pedro might not pitch Tuesday after allSaturday 7/19, 6:09 PM CT
The Mets are having second thoughts about letting Pedro Martinez return to the rotation on Tuesday, according to the AP. Martinez strained his groin while running the bases on July 7 and left his next outing after because of tightness in his shoulder. It is the groin injury that's keeping him out. "We're kind of wavering a little bit simply because he hasn't picked up a ball, hasn't been able to throw since his last outing," manager Jerry Manuel said.

Our View: Martinez got a cortisone shot for the groin ailment on Thursday and plans to throw in the bullpen during a game this weekend to see how he feels. How that session goes will likely determine whether or not he takes the ball Tuesday.
Arredondo vultures another winSaturday 7/19, 5:58 PM CT
Jose Arredondo vultured his fourth win of the season Saturday, as he allowed a walk and struck out one batter in a third of an inning.

Our View: Arredondo has been quite a find this year. He sports a nifty 1.11 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 24/8 K/BB rate over 24 1/3 frames.
Beckett goes the distance but losesSaturday 7/19, 5:55 PM CT
Josh Beckett completed his first game of the season Saturday. Unfortunately, he also picked up his sixth loss of the season. Becket allowed four runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out six over eight frames in a loss in Anaheim.

Our View: Beckett was undone by a four-run seventh inning, which included a Vlad Guerrero homer and Erick Aybar base-clearing triple.
Cano has four hits SaturdaySaturday 7/19, 5:51 PM CT
Robinson Cano had four hits, including two doubles, in the Yankees' 4-3 win Saturday. He is batting exactly .300 since his woeful April.

Our View: Cano is a great buy low candidate for anyone looking to add punch to their middle infield for the second half.
V-Mart closer to resuming drillsSaturday 7/19, 5:24 PM CT
Victor Martinez, recovering from right elbow surgery, is closer to resuming drills. "[He's] getting close to baseball activity. I think that hopefully towards the end of this week he can start getting more involved in baseball activity," manager Eric Wedge said on MLB.com. Wedge added: "He's still two or three weeks away, though. It's where we are."

Our View: The floundering Indians aren't about to rush V-Mart back into the lineup. We should see him sometime next month.
Loewen done as a pitcherSaturday 7/19, 5:19 PM CT
Adam Loewen has decided he wants to be the next Rick Ankiel. After three injury-filled seasons with the O's, Loewen has decided to reinvent himself as an outfielder/first baseman, perhaps as early as the fall instructional league, according to the Baltimore Sun. "I'm always going to be a pitcher," he said. "I've been doing it since I was 9 years old. It's going to be hard to let it go, but God has a plan for me."

Our View: Loewen was a highly regarded prospect, so it's disappointing he didn't make it as a pitcher. He had been due for another elbow surgery but won't need the operation as a position player.
Nix designated for assignmentSaturday 7/19, 5:04 PM CT
The Rockies designated Jayson Nix for assignment Saturday. He batted .125 over a couple stints with the team.

Our View: Nix was the opening day second baseman but just hasn't hit enough to stick in the show.
Stewart recalled from Triple-ASaturday 7/19, 5:02 PM CT
The Rockies recalled Ian Stewart from Triple-A Colorado Springs Saturday. To make room on the roster, Jayson Nix was designated for assignment.

Our View: Stewart should get some time at first while Todd Helton is out and also at second.
Hernandez recalled SaturdaySaturday 7/19, 4:54 PM CT
The Astros recalled Runelvys Hernandez from Triple-A Round Rock Saturday to replace the injured Roy Oswalt on the DL.

Our View: Hernandez will start on Monday against the Pirates. He holds an ugly 10.29 ERA in three starts this year.
Oswalt lands on disabled listSaturday 7/19, 4:52 PM CT
The Astros placed Roy Oswalt on the DL Saturday with a strained left hip. Oswalt will begin his rehabilitation immediately, and the team is hoping he can return to the rotation on July 28, according to SportsTicker.

Our View: The 'Stros are playing it safe here. Expect Roy to be back on July 28 against Cincinnati.
Aquino placed on DLSaturday 7/19, 4:50 PM CT
Greg Aquino was placed on the DL Saturday with a left hamstring strain. The move was retroactive to July 13.

Our View: Considering Aquino held a 12.54 ERA in nine games, the O's likely aren't upset about making this move. Randor Bierd replaces him on the roster.
Bierd activated from DLSaturday 7/19, 4:48 PM CT
The Orioles activated Randor Bierd from the DL Saturday. He had been out with a shoulder impingement.

Our View: The Rule 5 pick was throwing well before the injury, holding a 2.03 ERA in nine outings.
Castro acquired by O'sSaturday 7/19, 4:45 PM CT
The Orioles acquired Juan Castro from the Rockies Saturday in exchange for minor league infielder Mike McCoy. The veteran was 0-for-10 for the Reds this year before hitting .300 in 50 at-bats with Triple-A Colorado Springs. Freddie Bynum was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk to clear a roster spot.

Our View: The O's have gotten no production from their shortstop position this year. Apparently they think Castro can change that. We disagree.
Bartlett may need rehab assignmentSaturday 7/19, 4:39 PM CT
Jason Bartlett's next test in his rehab of a right knee sprain will run the bases Monday or Tuesday, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Manager Joe Maddon said Bartlett may need a rehab assignment before coming back.

Our View: Ben Zobrist had the game-winning homer for the Rays last night while filling in at short for Bartlett, but the team will be eager to get their starter back.
Percival appears close to returningSaturday 7/19, 4:36 PM CT
Troy Percival, on the DL with a strained left hamstring, had no problems Saturday, throwing 10 pitches and fielding balls from the mound. He also was able to cover first base without any limping, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View: Manager Joe Maddon said he plans to talk to Percival again before deciding when his closer will return, but it appears the veteran will be back soon.
Upton hitting seventh SaturdaySaturday 7/19, 4:29 PM CT
B.J. Upton, mired in a 8-for-42 (.190) slump, is hitting seventh in the Rays' order tonight. He had yet to hit lower than fourth this year.

Our View: Upton's power this year has been down, but he's added more steals to his game, so owners can't be too disappointed. Hopefully this new spot in the order will allow him to refocus and get back on track.
Myers gets his swagger backSaturday 7/19, 4:21 PM CT
Brett Myers is back with the Phillies after a much-needed four-start stint in the minors to get his stuff back. "I had to get my swagger back," Myers said in the AP. "I felt like I accomplished that." Myers went 1-3 in his four starts but boasted a 3.00 ERA with 28 strikeouts in 27 innings.

Our View: Myers has yet to officially be activated, but he's slated to return next Wednesday against the Mets. It would be hard for fantasy owners to trust him given his numbers on the year.
Rivera is the starterSaturday 7/19, 3:51 PM CT
Despite some questionable fielding, Juan Rivera's hot bat is keeping him as the right fielder in the Angels' starting lineup. He went 1-for-3 in last night's victory over the Red Sox and is in the lineup once again on Saturday.

Our View: Rivera won't likely keep up his July damage (he's hitting .375). There are better long term options in the outfield.
Lowrie starting for Sox at shortSaturday 7/19, 3:41 PM CT
Jed Lowrie is in Saturday's starting lineup at short and the expectation is that he will get the majority of the playing time at the position in the coming weeks, according to the Providence Journal. "I want to play this kid a little bit," said Terry Francona, "because I'm excited. He's steady and has good at-bats."

Our View: Francona compared Lowrie to former Red Sox third baseman Bill Mueller -- a switch-hitter who will hit a lot of doubles -- if not for much power -- and "grind out at-bats."
Chamberlain whiffs eightSaturday 7/19, 3:28 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain struck out eight batters in six innings against the A's on Saturday. He allowed one earned run but did not factor in the decision.

Our View: Chamberlain continues to be a strikeout machine but he has not gotten much run support in his first nine starts.
Durham out of tonight's lineupSaturday 7/19, 3:21 PM CT
Ray Durham is dealing with flu-like symptoms for the second straight day and is not in Saturday's lineup.

Our View: Don't expect Durham to miss much more action.
Sanchez eyeing returnSaturday 7/19, 3:12 PM CT
Anibal Sanchez will make one more rehab start on next Wednesday for Class AA Carolina, according to the Palm Beach Post.

Kershaw could be recalledSaturday 7/19, 2:47 PM CT
The Press-Enterprise reports that Clayton Kershaw is a candidate to replace Chan Ho Park in the rotation.

Sayanora, KosukeSaturday 7/19, 12:28 PM CT
Kosuke Fukudome might be wearing down. He is hitting .152 in July with 15 whiffs to just three walks.

Buchholz hit hard againSaturday 7/19, 12:25 PM CT
Clay Buchholz was tagged for eight runs, four earned, in 4.2 innings. He gave up eight hits and two walks in his abbreviated outing.

Our View: Gerut has been hitting well lately and should continue to start for the offensively inept Padres.
Robertson Ks the sideSaturday 7/19, 12:14 PM CT
David Robertson struck out all three batters he faced on Friday against Oakland.

Our View: Robertson may become a good candidate for holds in the second half. To this point he looks like one of the more reliable arms in the Yankees bullpen. He has 12 strikeouts in nine innings.

Delmon Young was 4-for-4 with an RBI in Friday nights game. His average is up to .294.

Coming soon: Brett MyersSaturday 7/19, 11:54 AM CT
Brett Myers lasted 6.2 innings on Friday and gave up just two runs at Single-A. He will likely receive the call to start against the Mets on Wednesday.

Bankston called back to OaklandSaturday 7/19, 11:48 AM CT
Wes Bankston has been recalled from Triple-A to take the roster spot of Daric Barton who was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained neck.

Our View: Bankston hit .294 in nine games on his previous tour. If he can produce during this stretch, the A's will have to consider keeping him in the lineup over Barton, who has been very ineffective this season.
Barton placed on DLSaturday 7/19, 11:46 AM CT
Daric Barton has been placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 14, with a neck strain.

Our View: Barton should come back once he is eligible, but this is a good opportunity for Wes Bankston or Jack Hannahan to show they belong in the everyday lineup.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that LHP Dallas Braden has been moved into the A's rotation in place of the departed Joe Blanton.

Ryan Sweeney was back in the lineup from a dislocated finger. He went 1-for-4.

Troy Tulowitzki got off to a good start in his recovery from a lacerated hand. He went 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBI in a Double-A game on Friday.

Our View: Tulowitzki has looked nothing like the superstar of last season, but he should be due for a solid rebound once he gets back to Colorado. The Rockies' offense has been heating up and Tulowitzki will likely join the party.

Jonathan Broxton recorded his first save of the year on Friday night when he struck out two Diamondbacks in a perfect ninth.

Our View: With Takashi Saito sidelined, Broxton will close for the majority of the second half for a Dodgers team that is competing for the playoffs. 15 saves is a very possible number for the flame-thrower.

Our View: On Monday, Matsui will visit Dr. Scott Rodeo, who performed the arthroscopic surgery on Matsui's right knee last November. Following that appointment, the Yankees should have a better idea of Matsui's status.
Garcia is still a long ways offSaturday 7/19, 8:26 AM CT
Ozzie Guillen spent some time with free agent Freddy Garcia over the All-Star break. According to MLB.com, he does not expect him back anytime soon. "When I saw him and where he's at right now, I don't see that happening. I don't think by August, maybe September. Freddy hasn't even thrown off the mound yet. He's throwing flat and he's throwing good and he said his velocity is coming around."

Our View: Hopefully Garcia does not rush back. The once effective pitcher carried a 5.90 ERA thru 11 starts last season.
Nomar belts two home runsSaturday 7/19, 7:48 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra recorded a pair of home runs on Friday during a 3-for-5 night. He had three RBI hitting out of the five-hole.

Our View: Nomah has been respectable since his return but this was by far his best game. It's still too early to jump on the bandwagon with Garciaparra, although he does have three position eligibility and is hitting in a good spot of the order for a team capable of scoring more often.
Kuroda is lit upSaturday 7/19, 7:43 AM CT
Hiroki Kuroda lasted just two innings against the Diamondbacks on Friday. He allowed eight hits, six runs and a walk in that time frame.

Our View: Kuroda has become consistent at throwing in a stinker like this every fourth start or so which makes him one of the more frustrating pitchers to own.
Mariners fielding offers for WashburnSaturday 7/19, 1:14 AM CT
Rumors out of Seattle suggest several teams have contacted the Mariners and may be interested in trading for the services of LHP Jarrod Washburn , according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

Our View: Washburn presents an intriguing commodity, touting one of the hotter hands in the league that happens to be attached to a left arm. Philly had called but is out of the picture following the trade for Joe Blanton. Any team in need of a solid lefty starter (and that's any team in contention for the playoffs) may be on that list as well. We'll keep you posted as more news becomes available.
Matthews Jr awaiting MRI results on kneeSaturday 7/19, 1:05 AM CT

Our View: Matthews' test was given on Thursday and will he will be giving a follow-up examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum on Sunday, according to manager Mike Scioscia. Matthews irritated his patellar tendon last September, an injury that knocked him out of the American League division series against the Boston Red Sox. The knee continues to bother the outfielder in 2008, a disappointing campaign in which he is batting .235 with seven home runs, 34 RBIs and a .310 on-base percentage. Whenever the team announces the official diagnosis, we'll be passing it along to you.

Cain walks fiveSaturday 7/19, 12:05 AM CT
Matt Cain threw six innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits while striking out five while getting the loss for the Giants as they succumbed to the Brewers by the score of 9-1. Wildness was Cain's undoing, as he walked five batters.

Our View: Cain is a generally effective pitcher, and his strikeout totals help fantasy owners, but he will have trouble picking up more than nine or 10 wins on the year.

King Felix Hernandez is starting to round into form for the Mariners, tonight earning his seventh win in leading his Mariners to the 8-2 victory over Cleveland. Hernandez pitched six innings, allowing two runs on four hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Cleveland couldn't get the offense moving but Seattle sure did, posting 13 hits (more than double that of the Indians) to earn the 8-2 win. Tonight it was outfielder Raul Ibanez leading the way, going 3-for-4 with his 12th homer of the season, posting four RBIs and two runs scored on the night.

Our View: Ibanez has hit well, posting a .314 average in June, though is power numbers are down with just nine homers through the start of July.
Laffey falls flat in lossSaturday 7/19, 12:02 AM CT
The Indians found frustration at the park this evening, falling 8-2 to the Mariners. With only six total hits on the night, the team failed to post the bats needed to win, though their starting pitcher didn't help the cause. LHP Aaron Laffey pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing eight runs (only three earned) on nine hits with two walks and one strikeout.

Our View: Laffey is still young and growing but had shown great promise over recent starts. Tonight only proves there is work to be done before Laffey realizes his full potential.
Sabathia dominant Saturday 7/19, 12:02 AM CT
CC Sabathia was absolutely dominant for the Brewers, pitching a complete game, allowing just four hits and one run while striking out 10 in the team's 9-1 victory over San Francisco. This was Sabathia's second complete game in a row, and he has allowed just five earned runs in 24 innings with the Brewers. He also doubled in the contest.

Our View: Sabathia has been destroying the opposition , and if you were lucky enough to pick him up in NL-only leagues, he has provided quite a boost to your fantasy squad.
