Pirates recall Van BenschotenSunday 7/20, 11:38 PM CT
Updating an earlier report, turning rumor into fact, the Pirates have announced RHP John Van Benschoten has been recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis and will start tonight against the Astros in Houston, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Our View: Van Benschoten is 1-2 with a 9.77 ERA, leaving his fantasy value rather low.
Carpenter off on the right footSunday 7/20, 10:50 PM CT
Earning his first start of the year, Chris Carpenter worked four impressive innings and gave up only one hit in his start for Double-A Springfield, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Carpenter's Cy Young arm felt fine during and after his first start in a game since undergoing Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery on July 24, 2007. Carpenter struggled with his location throughout the evening, issuing four walks. Carpenter threw 62 pitches over his four innings -- around the number the club was looking for -- but only 33 landed for strikes.
Washburn to start on MondaySunday 7/20, 10:36 PM CT
LHP Jarrod Washburn is set to return to the mound after missing eight days with the flu, according to MLB.com.

Our View: The flu bug, which swept through the Washburn family during the All-Star break, has been conquered, and he said the illness cost him three pounds -- and postponed his first start of the second half by two days. Washburn returns to the mound on Monday night in the Mariners' series opener against the Red Sox.
Wagner to undergo medical examSunday 7/20, 10:32 PM CT
The Mets report closer Billy Wagner will undergo medical examination on Monday after experiencing cramping and mild tightness in his left shoulder, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View: Wagner warns this is a precautionary measure, but we've heard similar statements before and seen troublesome results. We will update the findings as we get them in our hands.
40th save for K-RodSunday 7/20, 9:27 PM CT
Francisco Rodriguez posted his 40th save of the season this evening, closing the door on the Boston Red Sox once again as the Angels sealed the 5-3 win. K-Rod struckout all three batters he faced in the ninth, throwing just 18 pitches to get it done.

Our View: That's 12 strikeouts for the month of July, matching his total for all of June. His team is starting to surge and K-Rod is a big part of their success. He's allowed just three earned runs over his last 12 innings of work.
Garland keeps Boston in checkSunday 7/20, 9:21 PM CT
Angels RHP Jon Garland failed to get the win, but his teammates made sure the offense came through late to put the Boston to the loss, 5-3. Garland went 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts.

Our View: This was a nice rebound for Garland after surrendering seven runs over 2 2/3 innings in his last outing. He failed to get the decision today and now stands at 8-6 on the season with a 4.12 ERA.
Wakefield takes the loss vs AngelsSunday 7/20, 9:16 PM CT
The Sox failed to pull in a win that was well within reach, falling 5-3 due to late-inning misgivings once again. For Boston, the frustrating waste of a respectable night from veteran starter Tim Wakefield is the most damaging mark, pitching seven innings to allow four runs (all earned) on six hits with no walks and one strikeout.

Our View: Wakefield is struggling to find wins in consecutive starts and continues to let homers hamper his efforts, allowing four home runs over his last three starts with 18 homers allowed this season. He's working deep into games, but if the offense can't get at least three or four tallies on the board, times are tough.
Vlad homers, but error nearly brings lossSunday 7/20, 9:11 PM CT
The Red Sox and Angels hooked up for today's nightcap, putting another exciting baseball battle on the field for fans to enjoy with the Angels once again emerging victorious, 5-3. A run-producing error by outfielder Vladimir Guerrero nearly cost them the game, but he did contribute to the cause as well by going 1-for-4 at the dish with his 17th homer of the season. The error on a dropped fly ball by Guerrero allowed Boston outfielder Coco Crisp to score the go-ahead run in the seventh, but Casey Kotchman bailed him out with a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth followed by another stellar performance by closer Francisco Rodriguez to seal the deal.

Our View: Guerrero hit .375 with six homers and 15 RBIs through June but has posted an average of just .310 with four homers and 10 RBIs through July, respectable numbers but far from the furious pace he was on last month.
Complete-game winner for LeeSunday 7/20, 8:56 PM CT
Cleveland LHP Cliff Lee continues to roll, lifting his Indians to a 6-2 win over Seattle today with his third complete game of the season. Lee pitched all nine innings, allowing two runs (both earned) on 11 hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

Our View: Lets go over some impressive numbers. For starters, Lee has pitched five starts, going at least six innings in each, without giving up a homer. During that same stretch, he has surrendered six walks versus 34 strikeouts. During that stretch, he's allowed a combined total of nine earned runs.
Shoppach homers, drives in four vs SeattleSunday 7/20, 8:51 PM CT
Cleveland enjoyed another strong effort off the mound but catcher Kelly Shoppach was there to bring the offense in the Indians' 6-2 win over the Mariners. Shoppach went 2-for-4 with his eighth homer of the season, hit with two men on to give Shoppach a total of four RBIs and one runs scored on the day.

Our View: Shoppach is trying to keep his power-hitting prowess going, coming off four homers for 14 RBIs in June with three homers for seven RBIs thus far through July.
Vidro, Cairo go 3-for-4 in loss vs ClevelandSunday 7/20, 8:47 PM CT
The Mariners failed to make good on 11 hits versus Cleveland today, falling 6-2 to continue a season of frustration. The bulk of that offense came from just two players sharing nearly identical days at the plate. Designated hitter Jose Vidro and first baseman Miguel Cairo both went 3-for-4 at the dish, both posting one RBI.

Our View: Vidro is showing a bit of promise, hitting .290 through July with six RBIs (three over his last five games). It's not much, but it represents a noteworthy improvement.
Parra gets the win over San FranSunday 7/20, 8:34 PM CT
Milwaukee LHP Manny Parra was on the mark today, helping his team to the 7-4 win over San Francisco. Parra pitched 7 2/3 innings, allowing just two runs (both earned) on seven hits with two walks and nine strikeout.

Our View: The win moves Parra to 9-2 on the season with an ERA of 3.68. After goingn 5-0 through five starts in June, Parra was without decision through three starts in July before this win, allowing just four combined earned runs over 13 total innings (one of those starts lasting just one inning).
Braun homers off Lincecum in winSunday 7/20, 8:28 PM CT
The Brewers faced one of the toughest arms in the National League today and left with a convincing victory, emerging 7-4 against the Giants and Tim Lincecum. The effort was led by All-Star outfielder Ryan Braun , going 2-for-5 with his 26th double and 24th homer of the season, earning five RBIs and one run scored for the effort.

Our View: Braun is on fire, hitting .351 through July with four homers (including two in his last three games) with 13 RBIs thus far. Today, he even added a stolen base, his ninth of the year.
Lincecum suffers third lossSunday 7/20, 8:22 PM CT
The Brewers found some cracks in the San Francisco pitching ace, putting Tim Lincecum in the loss column for only the third time this season by taking the 7-4 win over the Giants. Lincecum pitched six innings to allow five runs (all earned) on six hits with four walks and eight strikeouts.

Our View: Lincecum "falls" to 11-3 with an ERA of 2.79, allowing two homers in a game for the second time in his last three starts (and for the third time in his last seven).
Loney goes 3-for-4 versus ArizonaSunday 7/20, 8:14 PM CT
The Dodgers struggled to get to Brandon Webb today, but they found the offense needed against relief pitching to earn the 6-5 win over Arizona with a five-run flurry in the top of the ninth. The effort was led by first baseman James Loney , going 3-for-4 with his 26th double of the season to post two runs scored on the night.

Our View: Outfielder Andre Ethier hit a homer to get the Diamondbacks going in the right direction late in that game, but Loney set the tone by showing the Dodgers had hits to chase. He needed a lift, hitting just .267 with two homers and 10 RBIs this month.
Drew goes 4-for-5 versus DodgersSunday 7/20, 8:02 PM CT
The Diamondbacks were all over the Dodgers today until the relief pitching gave up the win in the ninth, losing 6-5 to LA. Arizona's charge on offense was led by shortstop Stephen Drew , going 4-for-5 with his sixth triple of the year to post one RBI and one run scored.

Our View: Drew has turned it on this month, hitting .323 through July. He needs to find better run production (just six RBIs through July) and better efficiency (.364 OBP) to make fantasy owners happy, but he's improving.
Relief lets Webb down vs DodgersSunday 7/20, 7:58 PM CT
The Dodgers and Diamondbacks locked horns today with Arizona ruling the bulk of the day, but they fell in the top of the ninth to allow five Dodger runs and suffer the 6-5 loss. As a result, ace Brandon Webb failed to get a decision, going eight strong innings to allow just one run on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

Our View: Webb watched in horror as reliever Brandon Lyons threw 27 pitches over 2/3 of an innings, allowing five runs on five hits to blow the win. Webb has just one decision, a win, over his four July starts, allowing just eight combined earned runs over that stretch with seven walks and 22 strikeouts.
Cook gets much-needed winSunday 7/20, 7:50 PM CT
The offense was the name of the game for Colorado, getting the 11-3 win over the Pirates, but give ace Aaron Cook full credit, going seven innings to allow three runs over five hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Our View: Cook is 12-6 on the season with an ERA of 3.58, though today represents just his second win over his last six starts.
Stewart goes double-double vs PittSunday 7/20, 7:48 PM CT
Colorado third baseman Ian Stewart contributed a productive bat to the 11-3 win over Pittsburgh today, going 2-for-4 at the plate with two doubles to earn three RBIs and two runs scored for the effort.

Our View: Stewart has done rather well in his first two games since returning from injury, going 3-for-8 (.375) with four RBIs and three runs scored.
Holliday hits sixth July homerSunday 7/20, 7:38 PM CT
The Rockies were rolling in offensive fun today, posting an impressive 11-3 win against Pittsburgh. The charge at the plate was led by outfielder Matt Holliday , going 3-for-5 at the plate with his 22nd double and 16th home run of the season, posting two RBIs and two runs scored.

Our View: Holliday trade rumors will start glowing as Colorado seeks an inflated cost on their top offensive weapon. The guy hit .360 last month, is hitting .333 this month, and has surged in the power categories with six homers and 16 RBIs thus far in July.
Padilla gets 11th winSunday 7/20, 7:26 PM CT
The Rangers failed to enjoy much success at the plate today, leaving RHP Vicente Padilla to earn the 1-0 victory almost entirely with his pitching arm. Padilla went seven innings, allowing no runs on three hits with two walks and no strikeouts.

Our View: Padilla coerced 12 ground-outs on the day and threw just 80 pitches, getting his 11th win to move to 11-5 with an ERA of 4.41.
Baker takes disappointing lossSunday 7/20, 7:22 PM CT
The Rangers and Twins hooked up for barnburner today, posting six combined hits between them in a battle of pitching with Texas emerging with the 1-0 win. For Minnesota, it was the effort of RHP Scott Baker that went wasted, pitching eight innings to allow just one run on two hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.

Our View: Baker falls to 6-3 on the season, though the three losses have come over his last eight starts.
Padres fail to utilize good day from BaekSunday 7/20, 7:15 PM CT
The Padres took the 9-5 loss against St. Louis today, much to the dismay of RHP Cha Seung Baek , going 6 1/3 innings to allow two runs (one earned) on six hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Our View: Baek walked with no decision after his relief pitching failed to close the deal. That two consecutive no-decision results, "earning" the same results in four of his last eight starts, allowing 21 combined earned runs over that span. He also posted a homer today, one of few Padres finding worthwhile results at the plate.
Glaus homers, drive in threeSunday 7/20, 7:11 PM CT
The Cards put the 9-5 win against San Diego on the board today with some help from third baseman Troy Glaus , going 2-for-4 at the plate with his 18th home run of the season to rope in three RBIs and two runs scored on the day.

Our View: Glaus is glazing in July, hitting .371 with seven homers and 14 RBIs thus far. Over his last six games, he's roasted five long balls into the seats, good for nine RBIs.
Miles goes off versus San DiegoSunday 7/20, 7:08 PM CT
The Cardinals were as efficient as any team in the league today, producing nine runs on 10 hits to get the 9-5 win over San Diego. The path to riches was led by middle infielder Aaron Miles , going 3-for-5 at the dish with his third home run of the season to post four RBIs and three runs scored on the day.

Our View: Miles made it exciting, hitting the homer in the ninth with three men on to seal the deal. After hitting .337 last month, Miles is going at just .302 through July, but he has more than doubled his run production and seems to be working towards better power numbers as well (two homers in his last five games).
Backe falls to CubsSunday 7/20, 7:01 PM CT
The Astros failed to make a case for much applause today, falling 9-0 to the Chicago Cubs and wasting a respectable effort from RHP Brandon Backe . Backe pitched 6 2/3 innings to allow four runs (all earned) on eight hits with no walks and eight strikeouts.

Our View: The loss brings Backe to 6-10 on the season with an ERA at 4.79, but today the offense let him down. Turning in just six hits as a team will not get the job done, especially against the Cubs.
Dempster dominates AstrosSunday 7/20, 6:58 PM CT
With plenty of offense to back his cause, Chicago RHP Ryan Dempster pulled a win and insured the victory with a stellar performance off the mound, going eight innings of shutout baseball to allow just six hits and one walk measured by seven strikeouts.

Our View: Dempster now sits at 11-4 with an impressive 3.05 ERA, posting just two losses over his last 11 starts.
Lee drives in three vs 'StrosSunday 7/20, 6:53 PM CT
The Cubs found more than enough offense to pull the win today, topping the Astros 9-0. First baseman Derrek Lee did his part, going 2-for-5 at the plate with his 27th double of the season to post three RBIs and one run scored on the day.

Our View: Fantasy owners may have been disappointed with early efforts, but Lee is getting on track with a few of his numbers this month. He's hitting .371 through July, though he has not homered since June 20th.
Fontenot drives in three, scores threeSunday 7/20, 6:50 PM CT
The Cubbies made quick and dirty work of the Houston Astros today, pulling the dominating 9-0 win with the outstanding efforts of second baseman Mike Fontenot . Fontenot went 3-for-4 at the plate with his 14th double and eighth homer of the season to total three RBIs and three runs scored.

Our View: Fontenot posted an unassuming two homers with three RBIs on a .250 batting average last month, but through 36 at-bats in July he is hitting .361 with four homers and nine RBIs.
Lopez drives in three, scores threeSunday 7/20, 6:36 PM CT
With more than a few of the hitters for Washington finding their names and faces on our list of headlines for today, second baseman Felipe Lopez is also deserving of credit in the Nats' 15-6 win over Atlanta. Lopez went 3-for-4 with his 18th double of the season, totaling three RBIs and three runs scored on the day.

Our View: This was Lopez's first multi-hit game since July 6th, also posting his first RBIs since July 1st. Clearly there is no need to rush him to the fantasy lineup, hitting just .238 through July.
Flores goes 5-for-6 vs BravesSunday 7/20, 6:32 PM CT
Among the flurry of hitters for the Nationals today was catcher Jesus Flores , going 5-for-6 at the plate with five singles, posting two RBIs and two runs scored.

Our View: Flores' 11 RBIs this month are just two shy of his mark in June, but his hitting is way up, posting an average of .306 thus far through July after hitting .238 through June.
Five runs scored for KearnsSunday 7/20, 6:28 PM CT
Four players combined to post 12 RBIs against Atlanta today, giving the Nationals the 15-6 win over the Braves. One of those players was outfielder Austin Kearns , going 3-for-5 with the stick, posting one walk, one double, and one homer to total two RBIs and five runs scored.

Our View: That's five homers on the season for Kearns, hitting .327 through July with 11 RBIs and a .414 OBP for that same span.
Nats keep enjoying Harris' giftsSunday 7/20, 6:23 PM CT
The Nationals enjoyed an outstanding team effort on offense today, turning 17 hits into 15 runs to get the win over Atlanta, 15-6. The effort got started on the right foot bay leadoff hitter Willie Harris , going 2-for-3 with three walks and his sixth homer of the season, totaling a whopping five RBIs and one runs scored.

Our View: That's a huge day for any fantasy owner lucky enough to have Harris in the lineup, gifts he's been giving all month long. Harris is hitting .333 for the month of July, touting seven hits over his last three games with seven RBIs to match.
Teixeira homers twice in lossSunday 7/20, 6:17 PM CT
The Braves continue to look more like sellers than buyers as we move away from the All-Star break, falling 15-6 to the Nationals today to lose the series. However, one player rumored as trade bait served as a positive note. First baseman Mark Teixeira went 3-for-4 at the plate with one walk and two homers (his 18th and 19th this season), finishing with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Our View: Teixeira is doing what he can to draw attention, hitting .291 with three homers and 10 RBIs through July, also touting an evenly-balanced 11 walks and 11 strikeouts along the way.
Delgado swingin' hot through JulySunday 7/20, 6:03 PM CT
The Mets enjoyed a throng of hits to get the 7-5 win over the Reds today, giving first baseman Carlos Delgado the stage to shine. Delgado went 3-for-4 at the dish with one walk and his 20th double of the season, recording two RBIs and one run scored on the day.

Our View: Delgado is as hot as it gets, hitting .419 through July with a .500 OBP, four homers, and 12 RBIs. He's also improving with his eye, posting 11 walks versus 14 strikeouts this month (compared to nine walks versus 21 strikeouts in June).
Phillips keeps it going despite lossSunday 7/20, 5:57 PM CT
The Reds failed to match the stout offensive effort of the Mets, fallling 7-5, though second baseman Brandon Phillips did what he could to reverse their fortunes. Phillips went 2-for-4 at the dish with his 16th homer of the season along with one stolen base (his 20th thus far) to total two RBIs and two runs scored on the day.

Our View: Phillips is hitting .277 through July with four stolen bases, three home runs, and 15 RBIs thus far. He's doing fantasy owners proud and helping the Reds stay respectable.
Reyes lights the way in Mets winSunday 7/20, 5:51 PM CT
With 14 hits for the team on the day, the Mets had more than enough offense to go around, posting the 7-5 win over the Reds. Give the cigar to shortstop Jose Reyes as the top man of the effort, going 4-for-6 with a triple (his 11th of the season), a stolen base (his 33rd of the season), and three runs scored.

Our View: Reyes is making his rise this month, hitting. .338 through June with five stolen bases, nine walks versus six strikeouts, and 11 runs scored through July. He's already matched his RBI total from last month (9) and hopes to keep rolling as the Mets gain momentum.
Pelfrey avoids another lossSunday 7/20, 5:45 PM CT
The Mets left RHP Mike Pelfrey on the mound despite struggles today, and in the end the team found the win, 7-5, over the Reds. Pelfrey pitched seven innings, allowing five runs (all earned) on six hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Our View: Allowing three dingers to the big hitters of Cincy served as the most concerning mark of the day for a pitcher has otherwise shined in recent weeks. Pelfrey walked with no decision, thus he continues to carry a six-win streak forward (having not suffered a loss since May 26th).
Volquez suffers surprising struggle vs MetsSunday 7/20, 5:40 PM CT
It hasn't happened often, but Cincinnati RHP Edinson Volquez suffered through a horrific outing on the mound as his Reds fell 7-5 to the Mets. Volquez allowed four runs (all earned) on eight hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

Our View: Put the official warning light on for those fearing the All-Star Game has ruined yet another arm. Volquez walked with no-decision, but the outing ranks as his worth since June 26th, one of just three losses on the season.
Johnson gets another no-decisionSunday 7/20, 5:34 PM CT
The Marlins ran through six pitchers today, but the pace for the 3-2 win over Philadelphia was set by RHP Josh Johnson , going 6 2/3 innings to allow just two runs (both earned) on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

Our View: Johnson walked with no decision on the day, the win falling to the sixth and final pitcher of the afternoon (Doug Waechter). That's two starts for Johnson, pitching 11 2/3 total innings with just three combined walks and five earned runs allowed.
Hermida homers to get Marlins on trackSunday 7/20, 5:30 PM CT
The Marlins found a way to fight through the top-shelf pitching and earnt he 3-2 win over the Phillies, giving Jeremy Hermida a chance to play hero. Hermida went 2-for-5 on the game with his 12th homer of the season, representing one of few runs scored on the day.

Our View: Hermida has fallen off the pace of promise posted last month, hitting .278 last month only to fall to .196 through July. However, he now touts four homers and six RBIs on the month and carries just eight strikeouts versus seven walks.
Phillies fail HamelsSunday 7/20, 5:24 PM CT
A pitcher's duel erupted through the battle between the Phillies and Marlins today, with Philly LHP Cole Hamels suffering from the lack of offense as his Phillies fell 3-2. Hamels pitched eight innings, allowing two runs (both earned) on four hits with just two walks and seven strikeouts.

Our View: Both runs were allowed on solo homers, one to Jeremy Hermida, the other to Cody Ross. Hamels walked off with no decision despite the performance, a disappointing trend of late (his second no-decision in a row, his sixth since April 29th, a span that has seen Hamels go 7-3 in 16 starts).
Swisher tops in White Sox lossSunday 7/20, 5:17 PM CT
The White Sox suffered a disappointing series-closing loss versus the Kansas City Royals today, losing 8-7 despite working from behind to overtake two leads during the game, an effort led by outfielder Nick Swisher that fell just short. Swisher went 2-for-4 at the plate with one walk and his 13th homer of the season, touting three RBIs and two runs scored through the struggle.

Our View: After hitting .315 with seven homers and 23 RBIs last month, Swisher is hitting just .213 with one homer and five RBIs through July.
DeJesus helps the cause versus ChicagoSunday 7/20, 5:12 PM CT
The Royals and White Sox decided to turn up the offense today and put on a great show for local Chicago fans, but in the end it was Kansas City emerging victorious, 8-7. Outfielder David DeJesus led the way, going 2-for-5 at the dish with three RBIs and one run scored to show for his efforts.

Our View: DeJesus is hitting just .254 this month, well short of the .361 average he enjoyed in June. His OBP has dropped in more dramatic fashion, sitting at .288 for July after going .431 through June.
German drives in winners vs ChicagoSunday 7/20, 5:07 PM CT
The Royals found a way to pull the 8-7 win against the White Sox today, using the bat of Esteban German to get the job done. German went 3-for-3 at the dish, hitting two doubles with one walk to post two RBIs and one run scored on the day.

Our View: This was the Royals' first series win at US Cellar field since 2003. The team tried to steal defeat from the jaws of victory, blowing two leads early in the game, but getting two runs off German's double in the eighth sealed the deal.
Longoria homers in lossSunday 7/20, 5:01 PM CT
With a total lack of pitching worthy of discussion on the day, the Jays and Rays did battle with the bats with Toronto earning the victory, 9-4, despite the efforts of designated hitter Evan Longoria . Longoria went 1-for-3 with one walk and his 18th home run on the season, serving as one of three players with one RBI and one run scored on the day for Tampa Bay.

Our View: Longoria needs to pick up the pace a bit to match the eight homers he posted in June, now touting just three through July. He's also touting a regressing walk/strikeout ratio, earning just four free bases thus far through July versus 16 strikeouts (posting 13 walks and 24 strikeouts last month).
Scutaro drives in three vs RaysSunday 7/20, 4:57 PM CT
The Jays needed all of the offense they could muster today with a total of seven pitchers hitting the mound, but the troops in the batting order made good to get Toronto the 9-4 win over Tampa Bay. Second baseman Marco Scutaro was one of the top soldiers for the cause, going 1-for-4 with one walk and his fourth homer of the season to drive in three, adding two runs scored to the stat line along the way.

Our View: Scutaro hasn't been too helpful for fantay owners this season, hitting just .269 through July with a disappointing .333 OBP. Today he made one good swing of the bat, and you know that's nothing to get too excited about.
Rios surges to get Jays rollingSunday 7/20, 4:52 PM CT
The Jays found their offense to be in rare form today, helping Toronto get the 9-4 win over Tampa Bay. Outfielder Alex Rios was the man in charge of the surge, going 3-for-5 at the dish with two doubles (his 25th and 26th of the season) and his fifth homer of the season, totaling three RBIs and two runs scored for the effort.

Our View: Rios has been a strong force for those seeking batting average, hitting .320 through June with a matching .319 through July. He's failed to post a hit just twice over his last 11 games.
Soriano schedule to start rehab on MondaySunday 7/20, 4:43 PM CT
As hopes and desired by fans and fantasy owners alike, Chicago Cubs outfielder Alfonso Soriano will begin a rehab assignment on Monday with Chicago's rookie league team in Arizona and is expected to come off the disabled list on Thursday, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Soriano has been on the DL since June 12 because of a broken left hand. He took batting practice in Houston on Friday and felt good enough afterward to target a return this week. If all goes well in Mesa on Monday, Soriano will play with Triple-A Iowa in Tucson on Tuesday and could rejoin the Cubs for their four-game series against Florida, beginning Thursday at Wrigley Field.
Aardsma placed on DL Sunday 7/20, 3:59 PM CT
David Aardsma has been placed on the 15-day DL due to a groin injury, according to the AP. The team recalled Justin Masterson from Triple-A Pawtuckett to fill his spot on the roster. Aardsma said, "I’ll make sure I give it a lot of rest so I’ll be able to come back healthy. I know it’s one of those things where the last thing I want to do is make it a lot worse than what it is."

Our View: Aardsma was pitching well for the Red Sox bullpen this season prior to landing on the DL, as he held a 3-2 record with a 2.75 ERA and 1.40 WHIP over 39.1 innings, with 41 strikeouts. He held little fantasy value in leagues that don't use middle relievers, however.
Scott provides only source of scoring Sunday 7/20, 3:50 PM CT
Luke Scott went 1-for-3 with an RBI and provided the Orioles' lone source of scoring in Sunday's 5-1 loss to the Tigers at home. His hit, which was one of three mustered by the Orioles in the game, was good for a double.

Our View: He extended his RBI streak to three games, with six recorded over the span. He also has three home runs over his last three games, and could be headed for a strong second half. He is worth targeting if you can get him for a favorable price.
Ordonez homers in win Sunday 7/20, 3:45 PM CT
Magglio Ordonez went 2-for-5 with a solo homer in Sunday's 5-1 win over the Orioles.

Our View: He collected his 13th homer of the season, and snapped an eight-game drought.
Burres suffers loss at Camden Yards Sunday 7/20, 3:42 PM CT
Brian Burres allowed three earned runs on six hits over 5.1 innings in Sunday's 5-1 loss to the Tigers at Camden Yards, with four walks and five strikeouts.

Our View: He falls to 7-6 for the year, but this was his first loss since June 1.
Verlander shuts down Orioles Sunday 7/20, 3:37 PM CT
Justin Verlander shut down the Orioles in Sunday's 5-1 win, as he only surrendered one earned run on three hits over 8.2 innings, with three walks and three strikeouts.

Our View: He improves to 8-9 for the season, and just missed his second complete game. He extended his winning streak to four games, and has allowed two or less earned runs in eight straight starts. He is seemingly headed for a strong second half of the season.
Masterson recalled Sunday 7/20, 3:30 PM CT
Justin Masterson has been recalled from Triple-A Pawtuckett, according to the AP. The team placed David Aardsma on the 15-day DL with a strained right groin to make room on the roster.

Our View: Masterson fared well as a starter this season, but he looks to work out of the bullpen for now. He could prove to be effective as a setup man to closer Jon Papelbon, but his fantasy value will be limited in standard leagues that don't use middle relievers.
Hammock optioned Sunday 7/20, 3:21 PM CT
Robby Hammock has been optioned to Triple-A Tucscon, according to the AP. The team moved him to free up a roster spot for Chris Snyder, who has been activated from the DL.

Our View: The utility catcher only hit .171 with no homers and two RBI over 41 at-bats this season, and held no fantasy value prior to his demotion.
Snyder activated Sunday 7/20, 3:18 PM CT
As expected, Chris Snyder has been activated from the DL, according to the AP. Utility catcher Robby Hammock has been optioned to Triple-A Tucson as the adjoining move.

Our View: Snyder is worth activating for the new fantasy week in NL-only leagues, as he hit .246 with seven homers and 33 RBI over 64 games this season.
Giambi blasts 20th home run Sunday 7/20, 3:15 PM CT
Jason Giambi went 2-for-2 with a solo home run in Sunday's close 2-1 win over the Athletics at Yankee Stadium.

Our View: His homer was his 20th of the season, and his second over his last three games. His average may be on the decline, but he is still coming up big for fantasy owners in the power department.
Sweeney records lone RBI for A's Sunday 7/20, 3:11 PM CT
Ryan Sweeney went 2-for-4 and registered the A's lone RBI in Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Yankees in the Bronx.

Our View: That was the fourth time he recorded multiple hits over his last six games, and he has four RBI over his last three outings. He should remain in AL-only league lineups while he is hot.
Dye injured Sunday 7/20, 3:06 PM CT
Jermaine Dye was forced out of action against the Royals on Sunday after getting hit in the right knee by a pitch, according to the AP.

Our View: Brian Anderson replaced him in the outfield. We will keep you posted when more is known regarding Dye's injury.
Rowland-Smith optioned Sunday 7/20, 3:01 PM CT
Ryan Rowland-Smith has been optioned to Triple-A Tacoma, according to the AP. He was moved to free up a roster spot for J.J. Putz, who has been activated from the DL.

Our View: He held a 3.44 ERA and 1.36 WHIP over 55 innings this season, with 42 strikeouts. He fared well as a spot starter (made two starts), but was expendable to the club when moved back to the bullpen.
Putz activated Sunday 7/20, 2:55 PM CT
J.J. Putz has been activated from the DL following his battle with a hyperextended right elbow, according to the AP. Ryan Rowland-Smith was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma to make room on the roster.

Our View: Putz made two trips to the DL this season, and hopefully he can stay healthy this time. Barring another issue, he could serve as a solid number two closer during the stretch run of the season. He should be eased back in slowly for now.
Pettitte claims 11th win Sunday 7/20, 2:50 PM CT
Andy Pettitte pitched a gem against the Athletics at Yankee Stadium in Sunday's close 2-1 win. He only issued one earned run on four hits over eight innings, with no walks and nine strikeouts.

Duchscherer pitches well, takes loss Sunday 7/20, 2:45 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer pitched well against the Yankees on Sunday as he only allowed two earned runs on six hits over seven innings, but was dealt a loss, his sixth of the season. Oakland fell 2-1 at Yankee Stadium.

Our View: Duchscherer was still feeling the effects of a throat infection, and fantasy owners should be pleased with his performance despite the loss. He is now 2-1 over four starts in July, and has 10 wins for the season.
Jenkins injured by broken bat Sunday 7/20, 2:14 PM CT
Geoff Jenkins has been injured during Sunday's game, according to the AP. He bruised his shoulder when he was hit by the barrel of his broken bat. Jenkins’ bat broke on contact, and the left-handed hitter was struck in the right side near his neck.

Damon remains on DL Sunday 7/20, 1:59 PM CT
Johnny Damon could not convince the Yankees to activate him from the DL Sunday, according to the NY Daily News. He resumed a light throwing program before Sunday’s game, but GM Brian Cashman suggested the Yankees want to remain cautious and might still send Damon on a one-game rehab assignment this week, and maybe not until Thursday’s off-day, according to skipper Joe Girardi, before activating him. Damon said, "I let it be known to them that I was ready. I think they want to be extra cautious because what’s hurt this team all year has been injuries and I don’t think they want to see me jump back on the DL. But I actually think I’m fine."

Our View: So it looks like he won't be back until late next week, meaning you shouldn't activate him from your bench yet.
Longoria playing as DH Sunday 7/20, 1:37 PM CT
Evan Longoria is serving as the Rays' DH Sunday after after fouling two pitches off his left ankle Saturday night, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View: He didn't miss a game, and said he feels fine, so fantasy owners should not be worried about him. Willy Aybar started in his place at third base.
Guillen available in emergency Sunday 7/20, 1:32 PM CT
Carlos Guillen has rejoined the Tigers Sunday but is available to only play in an emergency, according to MLive.com. He said his wife, Amelia, was in stable condition and expected to be released from the hospital Monday, after being admitted Tuesday for surgery to correct bleeding problems connected to the birth two weeks ago of their daughter, Camelia. Guillen added, "She's doing better. Tuesday morning, she woke up bleeding, and the doctor sent her to the hospital for surgery to stop the bleeding."

Our View: He is missing a fourth straight start, and it is unclear when he will return to the Tigers' lineup.
Hamilton gets a rest Sunday 7/20, 1:28 PM CT
Josh Hamilton is getting a rest on Sunday and is not in the Rangers' starting lineup, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Our View: He isn't nursing an injury, he just needs a day of rest.
Butler adjusts stance Sunday 7/20, 1:15 PM CT
Billy Butler has altered his batting stance, and so far he is seeing strong results, according to the KC Star. He said, "I looked at some video. I don’t know if it was the cause of my slump or not, but I thought I was a little too close to the plate."

Our View: Butler is 4-for-9 over his last two games, with a home run in both outings and a total of seven RBI. He could be headed for a strong second half, and is worth targeting if you can get him for a good price.
Meche named in trade rumorsSunday 7/20, 1:09 PM CT
Gil Meche has been named in trade rumors, but he has a no-trade clause in his contract and said he doesn't plan to waive it, according to the KC Star. GM Dayton Moore also noted that Meche is part of the Royals plans to build a contender in the coming years.

Our View: The team is also disinclined to trade away David DeJesus, Jose Guillen, Zach Greinke, or Ron Mahay, unless overwhelmed by an offer.
Willingham scratched Sunday 7/20, 12:59 PM CT
Josh Willingham was scratched from Sunday's lineup due to a sore wrist, according to the Miami Herald.

Our View: He told Fredi Gonzalez he was available to play, and the skipper just wanted him to take a break, so fantasy owners shouldn't be concerned with his ailment. Luis Gonzalez got the start in left field.
Duran optioned Sunday 7/20, 12:25 PM CT
Infielder German Duran has been optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma, according to the Sports Network. The team activated Vincente Padilla from the DL, and Duran was viewed as expendable to free up a roster spot.

Our View: Duran held little fantasy value prior to his demotion, as he was hitting .225 with three homers and 11 RBI over 102 at-bats.
Padilla activated Sunday 7/20, 12:21 PM CT
Vicente Padilla has recovered from his strained neck muscle and has been activated from the DL, according to the Sports Network. The team optioned infielder German Duran to Triple-A Oklahoma to make room on the roster.

Our View: Padilla is slated to start Sunday's game against the Twins. Padilla holds a less than impressive 4.70 ERA and 1.45 WHIP this season, but maintains a 10-5 record. He should remain a favorable option in AL-only leagues.
Teixeira believes he'll remain with ATLSunday 7/20, 11:48 AM CT
Mark Teixeira believes he will remain with the Braves and doesn't expect to be dealt prior to the July 31 trade deadline, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He said, "Bobby Cox pointed out that there had been rumors about me and reliever Will Ohman, and he told us not to listen to media reports and to those rumors, because this team is still trying to win the NL East." Cox added the Braves are buyers, not sellers.

Our View: Cox's assurance will help prevent the trade rumors from becoming a distraction for Teixeira heading up to the deadline. He only holds a .273 average, but belted 17 homers with 69 RBI over 95 games.
Percival activated Sunday 7/20, 11:36 AM CT
Troy Percival has been activated from the DL following his fight with a strained left hamstring, according to the Tampa Tribune. The team placed Gary Glover on the 15-day DL to make room for Percival on the roster.

Our View: Percival is not offering a guarantee, but is feeling 10 times better than he did following his previous stint on the DL this season. The Rays’ medical team figured out that a nerve problem in Percival’s back was actually causing most of his hamstring issues and they have begun to treat his back rather than his leg. He is expected to resume his role as the Rays' closer and should be safe to insert back into your lineups.
Sox and Brewers inquire about Street Sunday 7/20, 11:28 AM CT
Sports Illustrated indicates that the White Sox and Brewers have inquired about Oakland closer Huston Street.

Our View: The Brewers interest in no surprise, but Chicago's interest is a bit puzzling as they have one of the most effective bullpens in the league this season, and an elite closer with Bobby Jenks. Perhaps the club wants insurance for Jenks, who recently came off the DL following a bout with painful shoulder bursitis.
Walker to throw sim. game Tuesday Sunday 7/20, 11:21 AM CT
Jamie Walker is scheduled to throw a simulated game on Tuesday, according to the Baltimore Sun. He is recovering from left elbow inflammation.

Our View: At that point, the club will decide whether or not to activate him from the DL.
Jones scratched for Sunday Sunday 7/20, 11:18 AM CT
Adam Jones has been scratched from Sunday's lineup after tweaking his ankle during Saturday action, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View: Jay Payton will start in center field in his place. Jones was experiencing some swelling and the team decided to hold him out. Consider him day-to-day.
Carrasco recalled Sunday 7/20, 11:05 AM CT
D.J. Carrasco has been recalled from Triple-A Charlotte, according to the AP. He was called up to fill the open roster spot for Jose Contreras, who landed on the DL with elbow tendinitis.

Our View: The reliever fared well with Chicago this season, as he only allowed four hits and one earned run over 5.1 innings, with five strikeouts, but holds no value in standard leagues that don't use middle relievers.
Contreras placed on DL Sunday 7/20, 11:00 AM CT
Jose Contreras has been placed on the 15-day DL due to right elbow tendinitis, according to the AP. The move is retroactive to Friday. D.J. Carrasco has been recalled from Triple-A Charlotte to fill his spot on the roster.

Our View: Contreras is 1-2 over his last six starts, and has allowed 12 earned runs over his last two outings. He will be missed in Chicago's rotation, but won't be missed as much as a fantasy hurler while he is out.
Pierre ahead of schedule Sunday 7/20, 10:10 AM CT
The LA Times reports that Juan Pierre is ahead of schedule in his rehab from a sprained ligament in his left knee. Though Pierre was expected to need six weeks to recover, skipper Joe Torre said that he could be playing in the next couple of weeks with the Dodgers or in the minors on a rehab assignment.

Our View: Pierre started jogging over the All-Star break and had a rigorous workout on Saturday, sprinting and catching balls on the run in the outfield at Chase Field. It looks like he will be back at some point in early August.
Johnson remains on schedule to startSunday 7/20, 10:03 AM CT
Jason Johnson pitched three innings in relief on Friday, but remains on schedule to start against the Rockies on Tuesday, according to the LA Times.

Our View: Johnson is worth a look in larger NL-only leagues for Tuesday if you need help, but shouldn't expect much from the 35-year-old hurler.
Sweeney to be activated soon Sunday 7/20, 9:56 AM CT
Mark Sweeney is set to be activated from the DL in the next day or two, according to the LA Times. He has been battling a strained right hamstring.

Our View: Sweeney holds no fantasy value, as he only hit .094 over 64 at-bats with the Dodgers this season, with no homers and three RBI.
Jones was out of lineup Saturday Sunday 7/20, 9:52 AM CT
Andruw Jones was out of Saturday's lineup due to stomach problems that forced him out in the fifth inning of Friday's game, according to the LA Times. He candidly said, "I've had to go to the bathroom quite a few times."

Our View: He should be back soon, but fantasy owners should not care, as he still only holds a .162 average, and has gone hitless in his last 10 at-bats. He has gone 16-straight games without a home run as well.
Penny throws pen session Sunday 7/20, 9:45 AM CT
Brad Penny, who is recovering from mild tendinitis in his right shoulder, throw a 40-pitch bullpen session on Saturday, according to the LA Times. He said he was pain-free following the outing.

Our View: Penny is scheduled to throw on the side again on Tuesday. He could provide a boost to fantasy lineups during the stretch run at the playoffs, but the Dodgers are yet to reveal a timetable for his return.
Miner officially named fifth starter Sunday 7/20, 9:36 AM CT
Zach Miner has been officially named the fifth starter of the Tigers' rotation, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Our View: He will make his first start on Monday against the Royals, and pushes Eddie Bonine out of the slot. Miner held a 4.23 ERA and 1.52 WHIP over 44.2 innings as a reliever this season, with only 23 strikeouts, but he merits fantasy consideration in larger mixed-leagues following his promotion to the starting rotation.
Beltre deal not likely? Sunday 7/20, 9:09 AM CT
The Star Tribune indicates that a deal for Seattle slugger Adrian Beltre to join the Twins is not likely to happen. The Twins recently contacted the Mariners regarding Beltre, but the team reportedly felt the asking price was too high. The Mariners could be asking for one of the Twins' young starting pitchers, plus minor league prospects.

Our View: Beltre is the Mariners' best defender in the infielder and he belted 16 homers with 46 RBI in an underachieving lineup so far. The team is not going to deal him for a low price.
Snyder expected to be activated Sunday 7/20, 8:54 AM CT
Chris Snyder is expected to be activated from the DL today following his recovery from a left testicular fracture, according to the East Valley Tribune. Robby Hammock is the likely candidate to get sent down to make room on the roster, unless manager Bob Melvin opts to carry three catchers.

Our View: Snyder is worth activating in NL-only leagues, as he hit .246 with seven homers and 33 RBI over 64 games this season.
Cruz to throw pen session today Sunday 7/20, 8:47 AM CT
Juan Cruz, who is recovering from a strained left oblique, is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Sunday, according to the East Valley Tribune.

Our View: Cruz will likely need to throw at least one more pen session before the team decides when to activate him from the DL. He has fared well as a fantasy middle reliever this season, as he namely racked up 46 strikeouts over 30.2 innings. He didn't record any saves, but has two wins to his credit.
Van Benschoten still in line for start Sunday 7/20, 8:40 AM CT
The team is yet to officially announce it, but John Van Benschoten remains in line to be recalled from the minors to start on Monday, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: He will only hold fantasy value in larger NL-only leagues, as he allowed 17 earned runs, 25 hits, and 12 walks over 15.2 innings of action with the Pirates this season prior to his demotion to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Sanchez to remain in second spot Sunday 7/20, 8:35 AM CT
Manager John Russell has stated that he will keep Freddy Sanchez in the second spot in the batting order despite his struggles at the plate, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Russell said, "Yeah, we'd like to get Freddy going. But you also have to look at how the lineup balances out. Best case scenario: Freddy hits in the two-hole, and we've got a very potent top of the order. If we move him to the bottom, now we're looking at too many potential outs in one spot. If Freddy's not hitting where he is now, we've got Nate McLouth and Ryan Doumit right there."

Our View: Sanchez is only hitting .154 in July, and his .256 on-base percentage ranks among the worst of everyday players in the league. Russell does have faith that Sanchez will regain his form, and he notably went 3-for-4 with a double on Saturday. Keep him stashed in NL-only leagues.
Quintero fares well in rehab outing Sunday 7/20, 8:10 AM CT
Humberto Quintero, who is trying to bounce back from a concussion, fared well in his first rehab outing on Saturday, as he went 2-for-4 with Double-A Corpus Christi, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View: That was the first of three rehab games set for him. He will likely be activated from the DL on Tuesday, and J.R. Towles could be sent back to Triple-A Round Rock at that time. Quintero should resume his role as the starting catcher.
Tejada to get more time off Sunday 7/20, 8:03 AM CT
Manager Cecil Cooper noted that Miguel Tejada will be given more time off in the second half of the season, according to the Houston Chronicle. Cooper said, "The first half we probably didn't monitor it as closely as we should have."

Our View: Tejada started 93 of the Astros' first 97 games at shortstop. He started off hot, but slumped a bit in June. More time off will keep him fresher, and likely more productive over the duration of the second half, which should benefit fantasy owners during their run at the playoffs.
Mulder ordered to restSunday 7/20, 7:48 AM CT
Mark Mulder has been ordered to rest and do nothing for two weeks, while he nurses his shoulder strain, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. GM John Mozeliak said, "We felt that taking a step back, let him not feel like he has to go to the training room, stop it, halt it, let him clear his head. He’s coming off a stringent program and we are deviating from that to see if it works. We are halting all throwing programs, all strengthening programs, and he will not be required to go to the training room."

Our View: Visits with two specialists, including Dr. James Andrews, revealed no structural damage in Mulder’s shoulder, but the team is not optimistic he will return, and he is not counted on to contribute this season.
Wainwright to meet with doctors Sunday 7/20, 7:42 AM CT
Adam Wainwright, who is recovering from a sprained right middle finger, is scheduled to meet with team doctors Monday to get clearance to throw off a mound early next week, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: Barring a setback, he could be back in the Cardinals' rotation in early August. He should make a few rehab starts in the minors prior to his return.
Carpenter to begin rehab tonight Sunday 7/20, 7:38 AM CT
As expected, Chris Carpenter is set to begin his rehab assignment Sunday night at Double-A, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: The Cardinals remain hesitant to set a timetable for his recovery, but pitching coach Dave Duncan hopes it doesn’t take Carpenter the allotted 30 days to return to the team.
Sweeney running again Sunday 7/20, 7:23 AM CT
Mike Sweeney did his first running on Saturday since undergoing arthroscopic surgery on both knees back in May, according to the SF Chronicle. He is also taking batting practice.

Our View: He is hopeful to come off the DL when first eligible on July 28. He was hitting .292 with two homers and 12 RBI over 40 games prior to going down, and is a decent option in larger AL-only leagues.
Devine to throw side session Sunday 7/20, 7:18 AM CT
Joey Devine, who is recovering from right elbow inflammation, will throw to hitters in a side session today (they will stand in the box but won't swing), according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View: Devine expects to throw a simulated game at Tampa Bay, likely on Tuesday. He will go on a rehab assignment after that, barring a setback.
Duchscherer still feeling sick Sunday 7/20, 7:15 AM CT
Justin Duchscherer is still feeling the effects of a throat infection that bothered him during his last start and the All-Star Game, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View: Manager Bob Geren told him that he didn't need to come to the ballpark Saturday. Duchscherer is still scheduled to start today against the Yankees, and should be penciled into your lineups.
Lincecum is fine, will start Sunday 7/20, 7:10 AM CT
Tim Lincecum is showing no signs of illness and is expected to start today against the Brewers, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View: Lincecum was drained to the point he needed to be hospitalized during the All-Star break due to his illness (flu-like symptoms) but manager Bruce Bochy stated he is fine. Get him into your lineups for Sunday.
Durham bound for Milwaukee? Sunday 7/20, 7:03 AM CT
The SF Chronicle reports that there is strong indication that the Giants are finalizing a deal that would send second baseman Ray Durham to the Brewers. One of the Brewers' outfield prospects, Darren Ford, was pulled from the starting lineup Saturday, and is believed to be involved in the trade.

Our View: The Brewers are looking for a bench player who hits left-handed, and Durham fits the bill as a switch-hitter. He wouldn't hold much fantasy value while stuck behind Rickie Weeks on the Brewers' depth chart.
