NEWSBREAKERS MLB
Zimmerman is hitlessSaturday 7/26, 11:44 PM CT
For the first time since coming off the DL, Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman failed to get a hit, as he went 0-for-3 with a walk in Washington's 6-0 loss to the Dodgers.

Our View: Zimmerman is 6-for-19 since coming off the DL, but he will be hard pressed to put up great fantasy numbers because of how poor Washington's lineup is.
Blake gets two hits in L.A. debutSaturday 7/26, 11:41 PM CT
Casey Blake went 2-for-3 with a double, and he also scored a run in his debut with the Dodgers in their 6-0 victory over the Nationals.

Our View: Blake hit sixth in the lineup, and if he stays at that spot in the order, he'll have plenty of opportunities to drive in runs and keep fantasy owners happy.
Perez gives up sixSaturday 7/26, 11:35 PM CT
Odalis Perez went just four innings, allowing six earned runs and earning his eighth loss of the season while raising his ERA to 4.38.

Our View: Perez brought a sub-4.00 ERA into this game, but that was deceiving, as he had not pitched quite as well as that might indicate. The numbers are now catching up to his talent, and if he fooled you into putting him on your fantasy team, get rid of him.
Lowe allows one hitSaturday 7/26, 11:32 PM CT
Amid rumors that he could be traded, Los Angeles starter Derek Lowe was dominant, throwing eight innings and giving up just one hit to the lowly Washington Nationals in the Dodgers 6-0 win.

Our View: Lowe is now 8-8 on the season, with a 3.74 ERA. The Nats are a cure for many pitchers, but Lowe has been solid enough to warrant a spot on fantasy rosters.
Delgado hits two outSaturday 7/26, 11:30 PM CT
Carlos Delgado hit two home runs on Saturday in the Mets 10-8 loss to St. Louis. Delgado was 2-for-6 on the night and drove in three runners, giving him 66 RBI on the season.

Our View: Reports of Delgado's demise earlier in the season were obviously premature, and he is paying dividends to fantasy owners who stuck with him.
Pujols nails home runSaturday 7/26, 11:27 PM CT
Albert Pujols went 5-for-8 with a home run and three RBI in New York on Saturday. The home run was Pujols' first since July 4, and it proved to be the game winner.

Our View: There's the power that has been missing. When Pujols hits home runs, they tend to come in bunches, so this may be the beginning of a power streak.
Reyes has three extra base hitsSaturday 7/26, 11:25 PM CT
Jose Reyes went 4-for-8 in the Mets extra inning loss to St. Louis, and among his hits were two doubles and his 12th home run of the season.

Our View: Reyes can still do it all, and he is now hitting an even .300 on the year, and he is obviously one of the top players in all of fantasy baseball.
Schumaker collects six hitsSaturday 7/26, 11:23 PM CT
Cardinals outfielder Skip Schumaker went 6-for-7 and scored three runs in St. Louis' 14 inning, 10-8 victory over the Mets. He was the first Cardinal to get six hits in one game since 1935.

Our View: Schumaker raised his average 11 points, to .302 in the game. He won't give you much in the way of power or RBI production, but you could do much worse in NL-only leagues.
Rowand drives in twoSaturday 7/26, 11:09 PM CT
Aaron Rowand went 2-for-4 with two RBI in the Giants loss to Arizona. He raised his batting average to .292 with the performance.

Our View: Before today's game, Rowand's average had dropped more than 50 points since it was .340 on June 1. He won't make up that much ground the rest of the season, but his 55 RBI are solid enough to keep him in fantasy lineups.
Drew's hitting streak endsSaturday 7/26, 11:05 PM CT
The 11-game hitting streak that Stephen Drew was in the midst of came to an end with a bad performance against the Giants. Drew went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in the Arizona win.

Our View: Drew has raised his fantasy stock with this streak, but his plate discipline still needs to improve, as an on-base percentage under .310 is not good enough for fantasy owners.
Webb wins 14thSaturday 7/26, 11:01 PM CT
Brandon Webb won his 14th game of the season in the Diamondbacks 5-3 win over the Giants. He threw seven innings, surrendering three runs on four hits and striking out eight.

Our View: Webb continues his bid for the Cy Young Award, and though his counterpart, Tim Lincecum, was better, Webb still managed the win.
Lincecum strikes out 13Saturday 7/26, 10:59 PM CT
Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum made his presence felt against the Arizona Diamondbacks, throwing seven innings, allowing two runs and striking out 13 hitters. Alas, he did not get the win as the San Francisco bullpen promptly came in and allowed three runs.

Our View: Lincecum is a fantasy stalwart, and possesses the talent to dominate on any given evening.
Hochevar effectiveSaturday 7/26, 10:48 PM CT
Former number one overall pick Luke Hochevar pitched a solid but unspectacular five innings, allowing two runs on four hits. He did not strike out a single batter.

Our View: Hochevar's lack of strikeouts on the year are surprising, but he would not hold fantasy value even if he had a lot more due to his ERA and WHIP.
Pena homers againSaturday 7/26, 10:44 PM CT
For the second consecutive game, Rays first baseman Carlos Pena hit a home run. He now has 17 on the season.

Our View: Pena is 5-for-11 in the series against Kansas City and has three home runs in his last seven games.
Grudzielanek gets three hits Saturday 7/26, 10:43 PM CT
Royals second baseman Mark Grudzielanek got three hits, going 3-for-5 with three doubles, and stopped an 0-for-9 streak.

Our View: Grudzielanek kept his batting average about .300, and could be an asset in AL-only leagues, despite his lack of power.
Kazmir goes fiveSaturday 7/26, 10:39 PM CT
Scott Kazmir threw just five innings, though he pitched well, allowing just two earned runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking no one.

Our View: Kazmir failed to get the win, but it was an effective effort nonetheless, and he is an invaluable part of fantasy rotations.
Hawpe continues hitting streakSaturday 7/26, 10:18 PM CT
Brad Hawpe has extended his hitting streak to eight games, and is in the midst of a torrid July in which he has an OPS nearing 1.000.

Our View: Hawpe started slowly but began hitting better in June and has continued that in July.
Bailey allows 15 hitsSaturday 7/26, 10:15 PM CT
Somehow, Homer Bailey only gave up five runs, four of them being earned, in 4.2 innings, because he allowed a ridiculous 15 hits during that time. For the record, he only got 14 outs.

Our View: Another hideous performance from the one-time uber-prospect.
Tulowitzki stays scalding hotSaturday 7/26, 10:11 PM CT
Troy Tulowitzki had three hits in five at-bats Saturday, and he is now 15-for-28 since coming off the DL July 21.

Our View: Tulowitzki is still available on the waiver wire in many leagues, but he won't be for long, so pick him up right now if he is there.
Cameron slumpingSaturday 7/26, 10:05 PM CT
After another hitless night in which he went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts, Mike Cameron is now hitting .228, and is in a 4-for-28 slump.

Our View: Stay away from him for fantasy purposes. Despite his 15 home runs, that batting average will just do too much damage.
Backe effectiveSaturday 7/26, 10:01 PM CT
Astros hurler Brandon Backe was effective, and though he did not figure in the decision, he allowed just two earned runs in 5.1 innings of work.

Our View: Backe does not deserve consideration in fantasy leagues until he starts to allow fewer homers and walk fewer batters.
Bush struggles at homeSaturday 7/26, 9:59 PM CT
Dave Bush usually never struggles when pitching in Milwaukee, as he carried a 2.50 ERA at home, compared to 6.95 on the road, but tonight he allowed four earned runs in five innings.

Our View: Bush got a no-decision, and he is just 5-8 on the year. It is difficult to justify a spot on fantasy rosters for a guy who only deserves starts when pitching at home.
Tejada goes 4-for-4Saturday 7/26, 9:56 PM CT
Miguel Tejada had a four hit night as the Astros fell to the Brewers 6-4. Tejada was 4-for-4 with four singles while scoring a run.

Our View: Tejada had been in a bit of a funk and was in danger of seeing his average drop below .270, so maybe this will lead to him breaking out.
Buscher drives in fiveSaturday 7/26, 9:53 PM CT
Brian Buscher is doing the most with his playing time, and went 3-for-5 with a home run and five RBI in the Twins victory over Cleveland. Buscher has now hit in eight of his last nine games.

Our View: Buscher is making the most of his playing time, and although he does not play in every game, he is somebody to keep an eye on, especially in AL-only leagues.
Sizemore strikes out three timesSaturday 7/26, 9:50 PM CT
Grady Sizemore went 1-for-5 and struck out three times in the Indians 11-4 loss to Minnesota on Friday. He did extend his hitting streak to a modest six games, however.

Our View: Sizemore has now hit in 12 of his last 13 games, and possesses that rarest of combinations which makes fantasy owners smile: power and speed.
Baker wins againSaturday 7/26, 9:46 PM CT
It wasn't the prettiest of his seven wins, but Twins pitcher Scott Baker got the job done, surrendering three runs in five innings.

Our View: Baker uncharacteristically walked three batters, which accounts for 1/6 of his total for the entire season.
Carmona awful in first start backSaturday 7/26, 9:44 PM CT
Fausto Carmona made his first start since May 23, and the Minnesota Twins lit him up, as he gave up nine runs in 2.1 innings on seven hits and three walks.

Our View: Certainly not the start fantasy owners were hoping for, as his ERA skyrocketed from 3.10 to 4.33.
Roberts in a funkSaturday 7/26, 9:41 PM CT
Brian Roberts went 0-for-4 on Saturday and is now in a 1-for-15 slump. He is also in a stolen base slump and has not swiped a bag since July 11.

Our View: Roberts still brings quality numbers to the table, but fantasy owners would feel better if he started stealing bases again.
Arredondo continues to throw wellSaturday 7/26, 9:38 PM CT
Jose Arredondo threw one scoreless inning, gaining his tenth hold and lowering his ERA to 1.26 with 1.2 scoreless innings of baseball.

Our View: Arredondo is one of those guys who can really help fantasy teams who have an open roster spot and need a little boost in strikeouts, ERA or WHIP.
Liz has bad outingSaturday 7/26, 9:35 PM CT
Radhames Liz had a rough outing, giving up six earned runs on seven hits and four walks in 5.2 innings.

Our View: When a pitcher has an ERA that is the same as a jet, 7.47, you know he has no place in fantasy baseball.
Hunter knocks in fiveSaturday 7/26, 9:32 PM CT
Torii Hunter reached base in all five of his plate appearances, going 3-for-3 with two home runs while walking twice and knocking in five runs.

Our View: Hunter is a decent fantasy option, but obviously gave great production tonight, and now has an eight-game hitting streak.
Quentin homers againSaturday 7/26, 9:28 PM CT
Carlos Quentin went 2-for-4 with a hoome run and two RBI in the White Sox victory over Detroit. Quentin is now hitting .363 since July 11.

Our View: Quentin has been among the most pleasant of surprises for fantasy owners, and he now has 27 homers on the year, and could make a push for 40 by year's end.
Cabrera extends hit streakSaturday 7/26, 9:25 PM CT
Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera has extended his hitting streak to eight games with a 1-for-4 performance on Saturday.

Our View: Cabrera started slow, and reported problems with his weight concerned fantasy owners who used a first-round pick on him, but he is hitting over .330 in July and seems well on his way to having close to a typical Cabrera-type of year.
Jenks earns saveSaturday 7/26, 9:22 PM CT
Bobby Jenks earned his 21st save and lowered his ERA to 1.73 with a scoreless ninth inning against the Tigers.

Our View: It was his second save since coming off the DL, and reaffirms that he is healthy and ready to go.
Verlander rockedSaturday 7/26, 9:20 PM CT
Justin Verlander picked up his tenth loss of the season by surrendering seven earned runs on nine hits in four innings against the White Sox. He allowed two home runs on the night.

Our View: Verlaner's ERA once again jumped over 4.00 after being below that mark for one game. He is still useful in fantasy leagues due to his strikeout potential, but those players who own him have yet another reason to be frustrated.
LaRoche still on fireSaturday 7/26, 9:16 PM CT
Adam LaRoche homered for the second consecutive game, and after going 2-for-5 on the night, the first baseman is hitting .378 (14-for-37) since the All-Star break.

Our View: LaRoche is having a superb July, so if he is laying around on the waiver wire somewhere, the prudent move would be to acquire him.
Banks wins thirdSaturday 7/26, 9:08 PM CT
San Diego hurler Josh Banks won his third game of the season tonight, but did not do it in impressive fashion, giving up five earned runs in 5.2 innings.

Our View: Banks allowed just one earned run in his first 23 innings this season, but in his last 23.1 innings, he has given up 17 runs. It might be wise to look somewhere else for pitching help in fantasy leagues.
Van Benschoten destroyedSaturday 7/26, 9:04 PM CT
John Van Benschoten had a horrid start for the Pirates, throwing just 1.2 innings and giving up seven earned runs on six hits and four walks.

Our View: Van Benschoten now carries an ERA of 10.48 and probably should not be in the major leagues, much less fantasy teams.
Gonzalez homers twiceSaturday 7/26, 9:02 PM CT
Adrian Gonzalez went 3-for-5 with a double and two home runs in San Diego's victory over the Pirates. The home runs were number 24 and 25 for Gonzalez.

Our View: Gonzalez is the only true offensive threat for San Diego, and he now has 82 RBI on the season.
Indians trying to move ByrdSaturday 7/26, 8:18 PM CT
The Cleveland Indians want pitcher Paul Byrd to fly away so they can acquire some prospects in a trade, according to ESPN.com. Though the Indians are giving it their best effort, nobody seems to be interested at the moment.

Our View: Byrd hasn't been quite as horrific as his 4-10, 5.28 ERA might indicate, but he's still been bad and does not belong on fantasy teams anywhere.
Mets concentrating on IbanezSaturday 7/26, 8:15 PM CT
The New York Mets have set their sights on acquiring Seattle outfielder Raul Ibanez now that Xavier Nady and Casey Blake have been moved, according to ESPN.com.

Our View: The Mets have a need for a bat, and Ibanez could slide right in to left field, giving them another piece to their offense. His fantasy value would increase by getting out of the spacious Safeco, though AL-only fantasy players would lose a bat.
Morton sent downSaturday 7/26, 7:52 PM CT
Atlanta hurler Charlie Morton was sent down to Triple-A Richmond to clear a roster spot for Mike Hampton, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View: Morton and his 6.00 ERA will not be missed in fantasy leagues.
Bennett to be activated this weekSaturday 7/26, 7:51 PM CT
Reliever Jeff Bennett will likely be activated on Monday when the Braves take on the Cardinals, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View: Bennett has no value in fantasy leagues, as he sports a 4.28 ERA and even worse, a 1.51 WHIP.
McCann on short list with HR featSaturday 7/26, 7:49 PM CT
Brian McCann joined Johnny Bench and Gary Carter as the only three catchers in the history of baseball with two seasons of at least 20 home runs before the age of 25, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View: That's lofty company for McCann, who is on pace to have his best offensive season. And at age 24, he's primed to get even better, and should dominate fantasy baseball at the catcher's spot for years to come.
Granderson will stay at leadoffSaturday 7/26, 7:05 PM CT
Curtis Granderson will remain the leadoff hitter against both righties and lefties, according to the Detroit News. "I'm going to etch that in stone. I've thought about it some more. He's our catalyst. He creates stuff for us, plus he's better against lefties now than he was," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said.

Our View: Granderson is actually hitting better (.306) against lefties this season than he is against right-handed pitchers (.291). Fantasy owners would like him to get closer to the 26 stolen bases he had a year ago, but otherwise he remains a good play.
Wakefield takes lossSaturday 7/26, 6:45 PM CT
Tim Wakefield took the loss against the Yankees, giving up sid earned runs on eight hits and four walks.

Our View: The knuckleball pitcher saw his ERA jump from 3.69 to 3.94. He remains a good fantasy option, with respectable strikeout numbers and a good WHIP that was 1.16 coming into today's game.
Cano remains scorching hotSaturday 7/26, 6:42 PM CT
Robinson Cano continued his torrid July, and extended his hitting streak to eight games, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and a home run today in Boston.

Our View: In his eight game hitting streak, Cano has multi-hit games in all but one of them, and is hitting a ridiculous .514 in those games.
Drew homersSaturday 7/26, 6:38 PM CT
J.D. Drew hit a solo home run off of Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte, and finished the game 1-for-4.

Our View: Drew can hit lefties as well as right-handers, as he carried a .291 average against southpaws into the game today.
Pettitte throws wellSaturday 7/26, 6:37 PM CT
Andy Pettitte threw well for the Yankees in their victory over Boston. The lefty got his 12th win by throwing six innings, allowing one earned run and striking out seven.

Our View: Pettitte has been good as of late, and has allowed just five runs in his last 28 innings pitched.
Coste collects three hitsSaturday 7/26, 6:30 PM CT
Philadelphia catcher Chris Coste went 3-for-4 with a double and drove in three runs in the Phillies win over Atlanta.

Our View: Coste was having an awful July, and his nine walks in nearly 180 at-bats are troubling, but you could do worse in NL-only fantasy leagues.
Hampton hit hardSaturday 7/26, 6:26 PM CT
Making his first start in nearly three years, Mike Hampton was hit hard, lasting just four innings, giving up six earned runs on eight hits while walking two.

Our View: Hampton threw 91 pitches, so fatigue didn't seem to be a problem. Rust could have been, though, as he clearly was not sharp.
Hamels fails to get through four inningsSaturday 7/26, 6:24 PM CT
Phillies hurler Cole Hamels lasted just 3.2 innings, giving up nine runs on six hits to the Braves. Just four of the runs were earned, as Hamels and Chase Utley each made errors contributing to the Braves nine-run fourth inning.

Our View: Hamels also walked three in the game. Just chalk this one up to being one of those days, and he remains an upper echelon fantasy option.
Teixeira hits 20th home runSaturday 7/26, 6:21 PM CT
Mark Teixeira hit home run number 20 on the season off of Phillies ace Cole Hamels in the Braves 10-9 loss to Philadelphia. Teixeira's home run was part of a nine-run fourth inning.

Our View: Teixeira has been rumored to be trade bait for some time now, and today's performance won't do anything to keep suitors away.
Justin Duchscherer roughed upSaturday 7/26, 6:15 PM CT
Justin Duchscherer went through easily his worst start of the year, allowing eight earned runs in six innings in Oakland's loss to the Texas Rangers.

Our View: Duchscherer saw his ERA jump half of a run, from 1.87 to 2.37 with this outing. The eight earned runs were two more than he gave up in the entire month of June.
Harrison performs wellSaturday 7/26, 6:12 PM CT
Matt Harrison pitched well, throwing five innings, allowing one earned run on five hits while walking three and striking out one.

Our View: Harrison had been brutal in his previous twos starts, giving up 13 earned runs in 7.2 innings, so this was an important outing for him.
A-Rod leaves gameSaturday 7/26, 6:08 PM CT
Alex Rodriguez left today's game against the Red Sox after being hit by a pitch. The injury is not thought to be serious, and he was replaced at third base by Wilson Betemit.

Our View: Rodriguez was said to be icing his wrist, and he should be okay, but there is no official word yet.
Murton continues to struggleSaturday 7/26, 5:54 PM CT
A's outfielder Matt Murton has struggled since going to Oakland, and after going 0-for-4 today, he is now hitting just .100 since being traded.

Our View: It's too early to give up on Murton yet if you have him on your fantasy squad, but it's not too early to be concerned, as his overall numbers are poor. He is hitting under .200 on the year overall.
Hamilton drives in threeSaturday 7/26, 5:52 PM CT
Josh Hamilton went 1-for-5, but hit a three-run home run off A's ace Justin Duchscherer, propelling Texas to a 9-4 win over Oakland.

Our View: In his last two games, Hamilton has hit two home runs and collected five RBI. His amazing story continues.
Sosa signs with SeattleSaturday 7/26, 5:47 PM CT
Pitcher Jorge Sosa has signed with the Seattle Mariners, and will start out in Triple-A, according to the Tacoma News Tribune.

Our View: Sosa was horrid in his time in the bigs this season, with a 7.06 and frightening WHIP of 1.89.
Hawkins designated for assignmentSaturday 7/26, 5:42 PM CT
Reliever LaTroy Hawkins was designated for assignment today, ending an undistinguished year in New York, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Hawkins was awful this season, with a 5.71 ERA and 1.44 WHIP while striking out just six more batters (23) than he walked (17).
Igawa sent downSaturday 7/26, 5:40 PM CT
Kei Igawa cleared waivers and was sent to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Igawa has only pitched in two big league games this year, and he has given up six runs and 13 hits in just four innings. He continues to be a bust.
Bradley tossed from gameSaturday 7/26, 5:10 PM CT
Milton Bradley was ejected from the game in the third inning after being called out on strikes for the second time, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Our View: Bradley is having a special season, but his infamous temper is always looming just beneath the surface, waiting to boil over like it did today.
Price may get called up soonSaturday 7/26, 5:06 PM CT
Pitcher David Price may end up getting called to the big leagues soon because the cost of trading for another pitcher is too high for the Rays, according to ESPN.com.

Our View: Whether he starts or relieves, Price has electric stuff, and fantasy owners would be wise to claim him off the waiver wire.
Gomez will miss rest of seriesSaturday 7/26, 4:35 PM CT
Carlos Gomez will miss the rest of the Twins series with the Cleveland Indians after being taken off the field yesterday on a stretcher when he ran into the wall making a catch, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Our View: Gomez simply has a bruised tailbone and lower back, and he should return soon.
Carpenter will start WednesdaySaturday 7/26, 4:31 PM CT
The St. Louis Cardinals have evidently seen enough from pitcher Chris Carpenter's rehab assignment that they are penciling him in to make the start on Wednesday in Atlanta, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: It isn't everyday that fantasy owners can pick up a former Cy Young winner on the waiver wire, and with this news, he will be snatched up quickly, so grab him if you can.
Sanchez will not be used in setup roleSaturday 7/26, 4:25 PM CT
Mets reliever Duaner Sanchez will not be used as a setup man in the eighth inning because of his recent struggles, according to New York Newsday. "I'd like to see Duaner's velocity a little better than it is right now," said Mets manager Jerry Manuel.

Our View: Sanchez has not gotten a single out in either of his last two appearances, so if you have him on your fantasy squad for holds, take note.
Ramirez enjoys slight burstSaturday 7/26, 4:09 PM CT
Aramis Ramirez showed a sign of reversing his poor July fortunes today, going 2-for-5 with his 18th homer of the season as his Cubs fell 3-2 in 12 innings against the Marlins. Ramirez totaled two RBIs on the day.

Our View: Ramirez came in hitting just .176 on the month of July, and while the team failed to win and the performance will only lower that average, the small burst is more than he has shown in some time. The hope is that it leads to better days.
Hermida homers twice in winSaturday 7/26, 4:06 PM CT
Jeremy Hermida did fantasy owners proud today with an absolutely brilliant day at the plate, going 3-for-5 in the Marlins' 3-2 12-inning win over the Cubbies. Hermida picked up his 19th double of the season and belted a pair of homers, giving him 15 on the season. He left with two RBIs and three runs scored on the day.

Our View: He's hot. That's seven homers this month for a total of nine RBIs and 12 runs scored. If he could improve the lowly batting average (just .188 through July), he'd be as coveted as any trade target in your league today.
Volstad keeps the Marlins in the mixSaturday 7/26, 4:03 PM CT
The Marlins hung tight with the Cubs thanks to a strong performance from RHP Chris Volstad , getting the 3-2 win in the 12th inning. Volstad went six to allow two runs (both earned) on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

Our View: Volstad gets no decision, but his ERA, standing at 2.38, shows just what kind of season he is enjoying. The offense came too late today, but the end result is what matters.
Harden dominates, but relief does notSaturday 7/26, 4:00 PM CT
It took 12 innings, but the Marlins found the hits in the 12th inning to pull the dramatic 3-2 win over the Cubs, wasting another strong outing from RHP Rich Harden . Harden didn't go deep, pitching just five innings, but he allowed just one run on two lowly hits with three walks and an impressive 10 strikeouts.

Our View: Harden gets no decision and the an ERA drop to 2.10. Five innings ain't much, but fans would agree that the team would be wise to rest that arm. Besides, they should have pulled this one out, indicating the bullpen may be more of a concern than we think.
Pirates recall PearceSaturday 7/26, 3:56 PM CT
The Pirates have recalled outfielder Steve Pearce , filling the spot in the roster vacated by the trade of Xavier Nady to the Yankees, according to the Sports Network.

Our View: Pearce will try to help fill the void left by Nady in right field. The 25-year-old spent a week with the Pirates in July going 1-for-3 as a pinch hitter while playing two innings in right field.
Chavez enters throwing programSaturday 7/26, 3:39 PM CT
Oakland third baseman Eric Chavez continues to work towards health, entering a new throwing program designed to encourage slow-but-progressive muscle build and flexibility in his inflamed right shoulder, according to MLB.com.

Our View: When talking about the shoulder that has kept him on the disabled list since July 2 -- his second lengthy injury stint of the season - Chavez expressed a sense of uncertainty. On Saturday head athletic trainer Stephen Sayles offered some answers, putting Chavez into this new program with hopes of getting him back in positive spirits. It was the 30-year-old Chavez's second consecutive day of throwing, and on Saturday he threw 25 balls from 60 feet, a distance Sayles hopes will expand during the next couple of weeks. Throwing, however, is what aggravates Chavez's shoulder the most. All is well and good with rehab plans, but what A's fans really want to know is if they will see their favorite third baseman back at the hot corner by season's end. This is the same question fantasy owners want answered, but reading the report leaves little to be found in terms of progressive news leading to high hopes. Stay tuned.
Konerko scratchedSaturday 7/26, 3:16 PM CT
Chicago first baseman Paul Konerko has been scratched from tonight's lineup against Detroit, according to ChicagoSports.com.

Our View: Konerko is just 3-for-24 lifetime (.125) against tonight's starter, Justin Verlander, who has won consecutive decisions and is 2.30 ERA over his past eight starts.
Purcey gets first winSaturday 7/26, 3:06 PM CT
Rookie LHP David Purcey put a strong effort on the mound today, leading his Blue Jays to a dominating 8-3 win over the Seattle Mariners. Purcey pitched six innings, allowing three runs (all earned) on seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Our View: The outing "lowers" Purcey's ERA to 8.10 with a record of 1-1 on the season. One point of significant concern: Over three starts, Purcey has earned 12 walks versus just seven strikeouts.
Rios homers twiceSaturday 7/26, 3:03 PM CT
The Blue Jays put an 8-3 whooping on the Mariners today with a little help from the bat of outfielder Alex Rios , going 2-for-2 with a walk and two home runs on the day, totaling three RBIs and two runs scored.

Our View: That's four homers for Rios since July 20th, now hitting .292 for the month of July. His homer total this month matches his number carried into July, suggesting he is starting to find his comfort zone.
Lopez drives in three in lossSaturday 7/26, 2:59 PM CT
The Mariners failed to find the offense needed, despite matching the Blue Jays in the hit column, and suffered the 8-3 loss to Toronto despite a strong day from second baseman Jose Lopez . Lopez went 2-for-4 with his 27th double and seventh homer of the season to drive in all three runs for the Jays.

Our View: Lopez is now hitting .299 on the season, riding the fun of a 13-game hit streak.
Carmona activated and set to goSaturday 7/26, 2:49 PM CT
As anticipated, the Indians have activated pitcher Fausto Carmona from the disabled list, according to the Sports Network.

Our View: Carmona was on the DL since May 24 after leaving his start the night before against Texas with a left hip strain. He made a rehab appearance with Single-A Lake County and Double-A Akron and will start on Saturday versus Minnesota. He'll get the start this evening against Minnesota.
Millwood to DLSaturday 7/26, 2:41 PM CT
The Rangers have decided to send pitcher Kevin Millwood to the 15-day disabled list according to the Star Telegram.

Our View: Millwood left in the third inning of his last start on July 23rd, but news on the injury has been almost nonexistant. The Telegram reports Millwood will clear a spot for Gerald Laird, who was activated today even though he didn't arrive at the ballpark until just after 11am. Max Ramirez will probably be shipped out Sunday to make room for Eric Hurley.
Indians acquire Reyes from CardsSaturday 7/26, 2:28 PM CT
The Cleveland Indians have acquired pitcher Anthony Reyes from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for minor league pitcher Luis Perdomo, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Our View: The 26-year-old Reyes has split this season between the Cardinals' bullpen and the starting rotation at Triple-A Memphis. The right-hander was on St. Louis' opening day roster and went 2-1 with a save in 10 relief appearances. He was placed on the disabled list in June with a sprained right elbow. Perdomo has made nine appearances at Double-A Akron. The 24-year-old began the season at Class-A Kinston.
Laffey optioned to make room for CarmonaSaturday 7/26, 1:55 PM CT
The Indians have optioned LHP Aaron Laffey to Class AAA Buffalo today to make room for Fausto Carmona, who was activated from the disabled list and will start against the Twins tonight, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Our View: Laffey's demotion means that Matt Ginter will stay in the startng rotation. Ginter, who was out of options, was called up from Class AAA Buffalo on July 12 and is 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA in two starts. In his last two starts, Laffey allowed 16 runs, 11 earned, in 7 2/3 innings. Laffey (5-7, 4.23) has lost his last two starts and four of his last seven.
Mariners still unsure of future for MorrowSaturday 7/26, 1:38 PM CT
Seattle is struggling to determine the best move to make with RHP Brandon Morrow , according to MLB.com.

Our View: Morrow has enjoyed a breakout season out of Seattle's bullpen, posting a 1.56 ERA and 45 strikeouts over 34 2/3 innings of work. But his preference is to eventually move into the starting rotation and the prospect of having another hard-throwing arm slotted behind Felix Hernandez certainly is an enticing proposition for the Mariners to consider. After missing time earlier this month with a hyperextended elbow, right-hander J.J. Putz is close to 100 percent. Once he is deemed completely healthy, that could pave the way for Morrow to begin transitioning into the starting rotation.
Season over for McGowanSaturday 7/26, 1:25 PM CT
Blue Jays RHP Dustin McGowan will have season-ending surgery Thursday to repair fraying of the labrum in his shoulder, according to CBSSports.com.

Our View: McGowan, who is 6-7 with a 4.37 ERA in 19 starts, has not pitched since leaving a July 8 game against Baltimore after four innings, saying that the ongoing pain had become too much to bear. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list the next day. Last September, an MRI revealed McGowan had a partial tear in his rotator cuff. Tests done this month revealed no further damage, but Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi said Saturday doctors will take a closer look when they operate on McGowan.
Cubs avoiding trade temptationsSaturday 7/26, 1:04 PM CT
The Trade Deadline is Thursday, and Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said they may not make a move unless an injury warrants it, according to MLB.com. "There's very little room to put someone in, in my opinion, if you're healthy," Hendry said Saturday. "I would think that for the most part if we did something it would be reaction to a health issue more than feeling our people weren't capable of doing their job."

Our View: The Cubs were believed to be in the market for a relief pitcher (namely Brian Fuentes from Colorado), but the move to call up rookie Jeff Samardzija may have answered those questions. He made his Major League debut on Friday, and was firing 96-98-mph fastballs with movement, something that Cubs manager Lou Piniella is looking for. The concern is whether Kerry Wood can bounce back from a nagging blister on his right hand. Wood, who has not pitched since July 11, was going to try to throw a side session on Sunday. He's been throwing changeups on the side so as not to aggravate the blister. He can come off the DL on Tuesday, but needs to also show the Cubs that he still has the arm strength.
Linebrink to 15-day DLSaturday 7/26, 12:59 PM CT
The Chicago White Sox have placed reliever Scott Linebrink on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 23rd, according to ChicagoSports.com.

Our View: Linebrink was dianosed with inflammation of the posterior of his right shoulder. Linebrink said after Friday's 6-5 win over Detroit that he suffered from stiffness and that the discomfort was at the back of his shoulder. He has pitched only once since July 8th. This means that D.J. Carrasco will take over the seventh inning duties, with Octavio Dotel taking over the setup duties. Reliever Ehren Wassermann was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte to take Linebrink's spot on the roster.
It's official: Blake to LA for prospectsSaturday 7/26, 12:48 PM CT
It is official as the Dodgers have made their official statement public: The Los Angeles Dodgers announced today they have acquired third baseman Casey Blake and cash considerations from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for minor league catcher Carlos Santana and minor league right-hander Jonathan Meloan. The announcement was made by Dodger General Manager Ned Colletti, according to the Los Angeles Daily News.

Our View: Blake leads the Indians with a .289 batting average and 58 runs batted in this season. He has hit 11 home runs and has posted a .365 on-base percentage and .465 slugging percentage. Blake's .393 batting average with runners in scoring position ranks fifth in the Major Leagues in 2008.
Manny in the lineup todaySaturday 7/26, 12:45 PM CT
Despite his absence last evening, the Boston Red Sox have posted today's lineup and outfielder Manny Ramirez is once again listed as a starter, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Fantasy owners will need to track this situation on a daily basis. Manny is a fantastic commodity, but his inability to provide a reliable effort as he battles with the Red Sox over his contract status appears to be growing, and as such it may would be wise to insure he's in the lineup each day.
More insight on pending Blake dealSaturday 7/26, 11:57 AM CT
Updating a string of recent news stories we have posted this morning, Jayson Stark with ESPN.com is now reporting the trade between the Cleveland Indians and Los Angeles Dodgers, sending third baseman Casey Blake west in exchange for minor league prospects, is in fact agreed upon and in league offices for review.

Our View: The Indians were believed to be receiving minor league catcher Carlos Santana and right-handed pitcher Jon Meloan, while the Dodgers will also receive cash in the deal. Santana is hitting .323, with 14 homers, for Inland Empire, in the Class A California League. The hard-throwing Meloan is 5-10, with a 4.97 ERA, at Triple-A Las Vegas -- but has piled up 335 strikeouts in only 262 innings in his minor league career.
Dodgers nearing trade for BlakeSaturday 7/26, 11:30 AM CT
Amid rumors of the Mets circling to pick third baseman Casey Blake from the Cleveland roster, reports out of Los Angeles now indicate the Dodgers are close to sealing a deal to obtain the power-hitting corner infielder, according to MLB.com.

Our View: The Dodgers are said to be close to acquiring Cleveland third baseman Casey Blake for a pair of Minor Leaguers, believed to be Triple-A pitcher Jon Meloan and Class A catcher Carlos Santana. Blake, a free agent after this year, has a salary of $6.1 million, and the Indians would pay all or most of it, according to a baseball source. We'll keep you posted.
Deal for Nady may see minor revisionsSaturday 7/26, 11:13 AM CT
The recently-completed trade for outfielder Xavier Nady may be in the process of minor revisions, according to Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com.

Our View: The deal is pending a review of medical records, sources say. The Pirates were to receive a package of four minor-league players, expected to be Class AAA right-hander Ross Ohlendorf, Class AA left-hander Phil Coke and righty George Kontos and Class AA outfielder Jose Tabata. However, the teams have discussed substituting Class AAA right-handers Jeff Karstens and Daniel McCutchen for Kontos and Coke, according to a source familiar with the talks.
Yanks pursuing WashburnSaturday 7/26, 11:09 AM CT
Reports indicate the Yankees, while working as one of the busier teams in this year's trade market, are not done, actively seeking a deal to add lefty Jarrod Washburn , according to the Star Ledger.

Our View: Dan Graziano reports the Yanks and Mariners continue to have serious discussions about a deal that would bring Washburn to the Bronx. The Yankees would like to put disappointing lefty Kei Igawa in the deal, but Seattle's not sold on him yet. The Mariners are looking for some outfield help, and the Yankees might talk about players such as Melky Cabrera, Brett Gardner or Justin Christian in the right deal. Seattle asked about Austin Jackson but was told no. Washburn does have a no-trade clause that would allow him to block a trade to the Yankees, but there's some sense that he would waive it for a chance at a pennant race.
Boston ready to be without MannySaturday 7/26, 11:00 AM CT
Reports out of Boston indicate Manny Ramirez has sealed his fate and the team is more than anxious to move on without their embattled slugger, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Here's the story. Fans understand the Red Sox have struggled to determine if the coming decision to accept the option year on Manny's contract is the right move for the team. Meanwhile Manny and agent Scott Boras are more than happy to talk in the press about their desires to sign another long-term deal and their willingness to do so outside of Boston (and, possibly, seeking to entice a trade out of Boston now). Yesterday, in one of the biggest games of the season, Boston manager Terry Francona filled out a lineup card with Manny batting fourth, but that was followed by an announcement that Manny could not play. It appears Manny is claiming there were problems with his right knee. In the past, management and the manager would be more than happy to accept and support this excuse, but not this time. Instead, the manager - apparently confident there's nothing wrong with the slugger - put Manny's name in the lineup, then sat and waited for Manny to pull himself out of the lineup. Manny complied. Never concerned with wins or losses, Manny told Brad Mills he was unable to play and took himself out of the batting order for a game that means as much as any this season. With that, the Globe reports the team is ready to move on, and resulting rumors of a potential trade seem certain to follow.
Burnett not on Detroit radar?Saturday 7/26, 10:09 AM CT
The services of A.J. Burnett continue to draw interest from a multitude of teams seeking an arm to add before the pending trade deadline arrives, but the Detroit Tigers (known to have sent scouts to the Blue Jays-Orioles series) are not believed to be one of them, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Our View: Burnett is making $12 million this year, and the Tigers are reluctant to add to what was a $138-million payroll Opening Day. Baltimore closer George Sherrill would be intriguing to the Tigers if Freddy Dolsi is unavailable for any length of time, but the price tag on Sherrill, a left-hander, is expected to be high.
Mets targeting Blake, Ibanez, or BaySaturday 7/26, 9:45 AM CT
The Mets are rumored to be seeking a corner infielder before the trade deadline arrives, and reports out of New York indicate they may be targeting Cleveland's Casey Blake , Seattle's Raul Ibanez, or Pittsburgh's Jason Bay, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View: The belief is that those teams' demands, currently exorbitant, will relax as Thursday's trading deadline approaches. GM Omar Minaya wouldn't discuss individual players, but acknowledged the organization has started to focus on particular targets. However, the Pirates' trade of Xavier Nady last night might change Pittsburgh's plans about trading Bay, and thus it would seem Blake could be the ideal target for such needs. We'll keep you posted.
Lo Duca admits steroid use, distributionSaturday 7/26, 9:31 AM CT
Paul Lo Duca has decided to let reporters know that the implications made in the Mitchell Report, indicating Lo Duca was a known user and provider of steroids, are true, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Our View: Lo Duca was the starting first baseman for the Washington Nationals on Friday in his first game at Dodger Stadium since he was cited in the Mitchell Report as a user of steroids and human growth hormone and the person who referred former Dodgers teammates Eric Gagne and Kevin Brown to his drug supplier. On the day Paul Lo Duca reported to spring training, he apologized he never said why he was apologizing. On Friday, Lo Duca acknowledged the report and told reporters that every word in that report is, in fact, true. He said he was unsure of how he would be received in light of the revelations.
Lannan has another nice outingSaturday 7/26, 12:08 AM CT
John Lannan gave Washington a chance to win, but as usual the offense could not deliver, saddling him with his tenth loss. Lannan threw seven innings and allowed just three earned runs on six hits against the Dodgers.

Our View: Lannan has a 3.33 ERA and respectable WHIP, but the Nationals cannot score many runs with their lineup, so Lannan is doomed to have a poor record despite pitching pretty well.
Nomar drives in twoSaturday 7/26, 12:05 AM CT
Nomar Garciaparra hit a bases loaded single and went 1-for-3 with two RBI, helping the Dodgers beat Washington 3-2.

Our View: Garciaparra has been great in July, hitting over .300 on the month, raising his average from .226 to .277.
Kearns gets two hitsSaturday 7/26, 12:03 AM CT
Austin Kearns went 2-for-4 on the night, and now has hits in seven of his last eight games.

Our View: Anyone remember when Kearns was one of the most coveted young hitters in baseball? That seems like a long time ago, as Kearns raised his batting average five points tonight ... all the way to .221.
Billingsley wins 10thSaturday 7/26, 12:01 AM CT
Chad Billingsley won his tenth game of the season as he threw 7.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits in the Dodgers 3-2 win over the Nationals.

Our View: Billingsley has a 3.26 ERA on the season, and has struck out over a batter an inning. He is one of the most valuable pitchers in fantasy baseball, and likely one of the most underappreciated as well.
