Baek falls to ArizonaWednesday 7/30, 11:58 PM CT
Cha Seung Baek had a rough outing on Wednesday night as he permitted five runs, four earned, in 4.1 innings against the D'backs in his fifth loss of the year.

Our View: Baek struck out five while walking only one, but he gave up eight hits on the night. This is the second straight start in which he permitted at least four runs without recording 18 outs, so his hold on a starting spot in the rotation could be tenuous unless the team trades Greg Maddux.
Francisco homers twiceWednesday 7/30, 11:56 PM CT
Cleveland took it on the chin, suffering the heartbreaking 14-12 loss to the Detroit Tigers after 13 innings, though designated hitter Ben Francisco did what he could to reverse fortunes. Francisco went 4-for-7 at the dish, hitting two homers to total two RBIs and two runs scored.

Our View: Hitting just .227 for the month, Francisco matched his July homer total coming in with two swings of the bat. He now has 10 homers on the season.
Haren wins againWednesday 7/30, 11:55 PM CT
Dan Haren did what he always does and that is he gave the D'backs a chance to win which they did for the 55th time this season in Haren's 11th victory of the year.

Our View: Haren allowed three runs in seven innings, but as his his M.O. he didn't walk anyone while striking out six. The guy is simply money as he has allowed as many as three earned runs only twice in his last 11 starts.
Winn has two hits for G-menWednesday 7/30, 11:52 PM CT
Randy Winn had two hits for the Giants on Wednesday night which could be his last in a San Francisco uniform.

Our View: Winn's name hasn't come up in many trade rumors, but he is on the block as the Giants are attempting to get younger. It certainly hasn't helped his value that he has hit .232 in July, but many teams could use his veteran presence.
Shoppach finishes with three doubles, two homersWednesday 7/30, 11:52 PM CT
We have already highlighted Cleveland catcher Kelly Shoppach's record-matching night, posting five extra-base hits on the night to tie a major league record. Now we give you the full story following the 14-12 win, earned over 13 innings, by the Detroit Tigers. Shoppach went 5-for-6 with one walk, three doubles, and two homers to post three RBIs and four runs scored on the night.

Our View: Shoppach has four homers last month and carried four more through July into this matchup. He now touts six homers with 14 RBIs and 13 runs scored on the month.
Sanchez struggles in lossWednesday 7/30, 11:50 PM CT
Jonathan Sanchez simply didn't have it on this night as he allowed five hits, four walks and four runs in just four innings in his seventh loss of the year.

Our View: In July Sanchez was brutal with an 0-3 record, a 8.57 ERA and a terrible 1.50 K/BB mark. Sanchez could certainly be tiring given that he worked mainly out of the pen the past two seasons. If you can still move him for something, you would be advised to give it a shot.
Polanco hits Detroit to 13-inning winWednesday 7/30, 11:47 PM CT
It took 41 combined hits and 13 innings to get the job done, but the Detroit Tigers managed to upset the Indians in Cleveland, 14-12. Second baseman Placido Polanco was a force in the effort, going 2-for-6 with his fourth stolen base of the season to total three RBIs and two runs scored on the evening.

Our View: Polanco has struggled this month, hititng just .270 through July after hitting .386 in June. He has just one homer and nine RBIs through this month as well.
Kemp pushes streak to 17Wednesday 7/30, 11:47 PM CT
Matt Kemp upped his hitting streak to 17 games on Wednesday night as he also stole two bases to give him 26 on the year.

Our View: Kemp has been a marvel this year because of the speed on the bases, though he was also thrown out by about 15 feet on a play at the plate as he continues to run without much concern for what's happening around him.
Billingsley throws CG shutoutWednesday 7/30, 11:45 PM CT
Chad Billingsley tossed a complete game shutout against the Giants that was preserved on a play at the plate as Andre Ethier threw out Jose Castillo for the last out of the game.

Our View: Billingsley dominated all game long as he improved to 11-9. The big difference tonight was Chad's control of the strike zone as he struck out eight without walking a single batter. When he is in control of his stuff, he is just about as hard to hit as any starter in the league.
Pence leads Astros offenseWednesday 7/30, 11:26 PM CT
Hunter Pence went 2-for-4 and had an RBI, his 12th in his last 17 games played and 53rd on the year.

Our View: Though those numbers sound promising, it should be noted that Pence is hitting just .245 over his last 50 games and he has swiped only two bags in that time, scarcely the type of production that was counted on when he was drafted as a second outfielder this season.
Wandy taken deep three timesWednesday 7/30, 11:23 PM CT
After back-to-back outings of one run allowed, Wandy Rodriguez took a step back on Wednesday allowing six runs in just 4.2 innings of work in his fourth loss of the year.

Our View: Wandy allowed three home runs on the night while needing 87 pitches to record 14 outs. Over his last six starts Rodriguez has a 5.45 ERA and 1.61 WHIP, a far cry from earlier in the year when he was on quite a role.
Volquez holds on for winWednesday 7/30, 11:19 PM CT
Edinson Volquez improved to 13-4 on the year by holding the Astros to just a single earned run over 6.1 innings. Volquez did give up five runs on the night but he also only walked one in the outing.

Our View: This was the third straight game that Edinson has allowed four or more runs, and it was also his second straight game with two home runs allowed. He certainly isn't the pitcher he was earlier in the year, but there is no shame in that since there have been very few pitchers who were that dominating at any point in the past 20 years.
Dunn blasts two home runsWednesday 7/30, 11:16 PM CT
Adam Dunn homered twice for the Reds on his way to three hits and two RBI for Cincinnati.

Our View: Dunn is now just eight home runs short of his fifth straight 40 homer season, quite an accomplishment for a player who is constantly dogged because of his high strikeout totals.
Another source says Manny deal doneWednesday 7/30, 11:13 PM CT
The Manny Ramirez to Marlins deal has been completed according to an "American League source" as reported by the Palm Beach Post.

Our View: Of course, the source is unnamed and officials from both ball clubs still deny that anything has been worked out. Though the Marlins wouldn't be on the hook for his entire $20 million contract of Ramirez since the year is two thirds over, it is still worth noting that the entire Marlins team is making roughly $22 million. Stay tuned as we will continue to report the latest rumors surrounding this deal.
Three Cubs have three hitsWednesday 7/30, 10:57 PM CT
Alfonso Soriano went 3-for-4 on Wednesday to lead a trio of Cubs hitters with three hits (the others were Reed Johnson and Ryan Theriot).

Our View: Soriano also stole his 10th SB of the year on the night. With a little bit of work, Soriano could still end up as a 20/20 performer this year since he also has 17 home runs, something he failed to do last season when he had 33 home runs and 19 stolen bases.
Prince goes deepWednesday 7/30, 10:55 PM CT
Prince Fielder hit his 21st home run of the season on Wednesday knocking in his 60th run of the year.

Our View: Fielder is viewed as the big bopper in Milwaukee, and while might be true if you looked as his belt size, the big home run hitter this season has been Ryan Braun who has 29 taters on the year. Still, Fielder certainly isn't a bad fall back option.
Parra far from bestWednesday 7/30, 10:49 PM CT
Manny Parra wasn't at his best on Wednesday as he allowed eight hits, four walks and five runs in 5.1 innings in his fourth loss of the year.

Our View: Parra has now lost two straight starts after winning his previous eight decisions. Parra continues to walk far too many batters with a 4.39 BB/9 mark, and until he reigns in that tendency, he will likely struggle from time to time.
Dempster dominates BrewersWednesday 7/30, 10:45 PM CT
Ryan Dempster held the Brewers to a mere run over seven innings to run his record to 12-4 on the season for the Cubs.

Our View: Dempster was in control throughout on this night as he struck out nine batters while walking only one. Dempster continues to work as a massive bonus to those who drafted him late at the start of the year and has now allowed just two runs over his last three starts (21 IP) as he continues to push for top-10 starting pitching honors.
Batista pitches well, but Mariners fallWednesday 7/30, 10:45 PM CT
Seattle RHP Miguel Batista put a strong outing on the mound tonight but the Mariners failed to produce the offense needed for a win, falling 4-3 to the Rangers. Batista pitched six innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Our View: Batista is seeing more work as a reliever in recent weeks than as a starter, and his work hasn't offered fantasy owners too many rewards this season. His status, or lack thereof, moving forward remains a question, but we expect you could see him continue to bounce between relief stints and starts the rest of the way.
Manny to Marlins still on holdWednesday 7/30, 10:40 PM CT
In what feels like update number seventeen in the Manny Ramirez to Florida Marlins deal, latest word from Peter Gammons of ESPN is that the deal has not been finalized.

Our View: This deal could go down to the wire tommorrow, but Gammons is reporting that the real sticking point is which young players will be involved in the deal, though Manny would still have to waive his no-trade clause once the deal was finally agreed to.
Padilla keeps Texas in it to winWednesday 7/30, 10:39 PM CT
Texas RHP Vicente Padilla found another strong outing off the mound this evening, going seven innings to allow three runs (all earned0 on 10 hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Our View: It was just his fourth start this month, going 2-1 through July with a no-decision this evening. There have been more runs allowed over recent weeks than at the start, leaving us to ponder if he will fall of the pace coming down the stretch.
Dunn to Rays possibleWednesday 7/30, 10:36 PM CT
Adam Dunn may be headed to the Rays as the team has apparently been unable to work out a deal with the Pirates for Jason Bay, according to Jayson Stark of ESPN.

Our View: The Rays appear to still covet Bay, but if they aren't able to work something out by early Thursday morning, they would likely turn their attention to the Big Donkey.
Liriano close to recallWednesday 7/30, 10:34 PM CT
Francisco Liriano may soon be rejoining the Twins major league club, according to the Star Tribune.

Our View: There is no news in the report about whether or not he would end up starting, but given that the team is considering dealing Boof Bonser to open up a spot for Liriano, it would seem that Liriano could be headed to the bullpen. Time will tell.
Hamilton homers in win over SeattleWednesday 7/30, 10:34 PM CT
The Rangers had to fight but found a way to win, pulling the 4-3 victory over Seattle this evening. Outfielder Josh Hamilton homered once again, his 25th of the season, going 1-for-3 with one walk, one RBI and one run scored on the night.

Our View: 24 RBIs through July for Hamilton keeps him on pace for an MVP-caliber season. He's failed to earn at least one hit in just two of his last 10 games.
Bonser offered in tradeWednesday 7/30, 10:31 PM CT
Boof Bonser may be spending his last night as a member of the Twins organization, according to the Star Tribune.

Our View: If the team is serious about promoting Francisco Liriano, Bonser would certainly be the logical choice to move considering he has been terrible this season with a 6.59 ERA and 1.53 WHIP.
Ichiro goes 3-for-4 in lossWednesday 7/30, 10:30 PM CT
Seattle suffered through the tough 4-3 loss to Texas despite the efforts of outfielder Ichiro Suzuki, going 3-for-4 for the night with one walk.

Our View: Only three players earned RBIs for the Mariners this evening, a trend that has troubled both Seattle and Ichiro this month. Suzuki carries just five RBIs through July after posting just six last month.
Fuentes sets save markWednesday 7/30, 10:28 PM CT
Brian Fuentes picked up the 103rd save of his Rockies career on Wednesday an all-time Rockies record, according to MLB.com. "After coming off the mound thinking that I have more than anyone in the organization, it feels nice," Fuentes said.

Our View: Whether or not he gets a chance to pick up number 104 is in doubt has his name continues to be one of the most talked about as we approach Thursday's trade deadline.
Braves have four with at least two hitsWednesday 7/30, 10:24 PM CT
Omar Infante led the Braves with three hits on Wednesday while Greg Norton, Kelly Johnson and Jeff Francoeur each had two hits.

Our View: Infante continues to receive playing time with Chipper Jones on the DL, and he has actually acquitted himself quite well with two or more hits in four of his last six games.
Shoppach ties record, posts five extra-base hitsWednesday 7/30, 10:23 PM CT
Cleveland catcher Kelly Shoppach tied a major league record Wednesday night with five extra-base hits, including two home runs and three doubles, according to Yahoo Sports.

Our View: Shoppach doubled and scored in the second, third and fifth innings. He hit a two-run homer in the sixth and tied the score at 12 with a one-out solo homer in the ninth. Shoppach became the eighth player in the majors to get five extra-base hits in a game, including two before 1900. He was only the second AL player to accomplish the feat — Indians Hall of Famer Lou Boudreau did it in 1946 with one homer and four doubles.
Floyd get another winWednesday 7/30, 10:21 PM CT
Chicago RHP Gavin Floyd continues to enjoy a breakthrough season with the White Sox, tonight picking up his 11th win of the season by leading his White Sox to the 8-3 trouncing of the Twins. Floyd pitched 7 2/3 innings, allowing just one run on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Our View: Floyd is unlikely to accept praise, but his rise this season has been fun to watch. After going 4-1 in June he is now even at 2-2 through July despite allowing just 11 earned runs over that same span.
Mather has another big nightWednesday 7/30, 10:20 PM CT
Joe Mather hit his fourth home run of the season on Wednesday as he went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI for the Cardinals.

Our View: Mather continues to impress playing mostly because of an injury to Rick Ankiel. Tonight's effort gives Mather six hits and four RBI in his last three starts.
Jurrjens solid in lossWednesday 7/30, 10:18 PM CT
Jair Jurrjens pitched a solid game on Wednesday night but he still lost his sixth game of the season. Jair held the Cardinals to three runs over seven innings allowing seven hits while issuing three walks.

Our View: Jurrjens continues to impress with a 3.06 ERA through 21 starts. With the recent injury to Tim Hudson, the team will continue to lean on this youngster for more effective work down the stretch.
Ramirez homers in win over MinnyWednesday 7/30, 10:16 PM CT
Chicago second baseman Alexei Ramirez was more than happy to provide a bit of offensive support for his White Sox this evening, going 2-for-5 in the 8-3 win over Minnesota, hitting his ninth homer of the season to total three RBIs and two runs scored.

Our View: Ramirez was hitting .354 through July heading into this game and now carries four homers for July forward. However, these are his first RBIs since July 23rd and his first homer since July 19th.
Carpenter has successful first startWednesday 7/30, 10:13 PM CT
Chris Carpenter made his first start since April of 2007, and he was very effective limiting the Braves to just one run over four innings of work.

Our View: Carpenter was removed after throwing 67 pitches and he figures to be on a short leash as he continues to build up arm strength, but tonight's outing certainly was a positive one for a team that could certainly use another arm.
Quentin keeps bashing for White SoxWednesday 7/30, 10:11 PM CT
The White Sox put the hurt to Minnesota tonight, turning 15 hits into eight runs for the dominating 8-3 win. For Chicago the effort was led by outfielder Carlos Quentin , going 3-for-5 with his 19th double and 28th homer of the season, posting four RBIs and one run scored on the night.

Our View: That's an amazing nine home runs for 22 RBIs thus far through July. Add 20 runs scored and you have to rank Quentin as one of, if not the, hottest bats in the game right now.
No news yet on potential Jacobs dealWednesday 7/30, 10:07 PM CT
Mike Jacobs was removed from the Marlins game after six innings leading to speculation that he had been traded, but when asked about it after the game he said that he had heard no such thing, according to MLB.com.

Our View: One of the rumors making the rounds is that Jacobs will be dealt to the Giants for catcher Bengie Molina, though the Giants don't appear to be overly anxious to trade Molina after his great work with the team's young pitching staff. Plus, the Giants feel that current first baseman, John Bowker, has more upside than Jacobs.
Saunders gets win #14Wednesday 7/30, 10:03 PM CT
Los Angeles Angels LHP Joe Saunders picked up another strong win this evening, leading his team to the 9-2 win over Boston. Saunders pitched six innings, allowing two runs on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

Our View: Saunders now sits at 14-5 on the season with an ERA at 3.09. He is 3-1 through July with just 12 earned runs allowed over five starts.
Uggla back on trackWednesday 7/30, 10:02 PM CT
Dan Uggla blasted his 26th home run of the year on his way to two hits and two RBI for the Marlins.

Our View: This was Uggla's second home run in four games after a stretch of one long ball in 20 games. He is well on pace to establish a career-high in home runs after hitting 31 last season, though his average has slipped to below .270 due to a terrible month of July (.169).
Beckett struggling to performWednesday 7/30, 10:00 PM CT
Boston RHP Josh Beckett suffered through one of his worst outings this season, taking the 9-2 loss against the Angels. Beckett pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on 11 hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.

Our View: Beckett now sits at 9-8 on the season with a 4.15 ERA. He is 2-3 for July, having surrendered a troublesome 20 earned runs over those five starts.
Easley hits pinch home runWednesday 7/30, 9:59 PM CT
Damion Easley hit a punch hit, three run home run in the seventh inning for the Mets in their 7-5 loss to the Marlins.

Our View: Easly continues to prove worthy of at-bats as he is hitting .279 with 29 RBI in limited duty for the Mets. Luis Castillo owners should be very concerned that even when healthy, he won't be able to unseat Easley.
Figgins keeps the bases hotWednesday 7/30, 9:57 PM CT
The Angels put a 9-2 whooping on the Red Sox tonight, ending the series in a three-game sweep of the defending World Series champ. Leadoff man Chone Figgins did his part, going 3-for-5 at the plate with one run scored and his 20th stolen base of the season.

Our View: That's three stolen bases over his last three games, though hitting .217 through July is disappointing.
Johnson wins first game in two yearsWednesday 7/30, 9:55 PM CT
Josh Johnson defeated the Mets on Wednesday night for his first victory since August 28, 2006 in just his fourth start back after undergoing elbow surgery.

Our View: Johnson is certainly a viable NL only option at this point, but he still isn't someone to count on in shallow mixed leagues. Still, it's great to see him back on the hill.
Anderson homers, goes 4-for-5 vs BostonWednesday 7/30, 9:54 PM CT
The Angels sent a loud-and-clear message this evening, sending the Boston Red Sox to the loss column in dominating fashion, 9-2, to complete the three-dame sweep. The Angels were led by outfielder Garret Anderson on offense, going 4-for-5 at the dish with his 16th double and 11th homer of the season, totaling four RBIs and one run scored on the night.

Our View: Anderson continues to bolster one of the hottest bats this month, hitting .329 through July coming into tonight's matchup. He now has five homers for 22 RBIs and 15 runs scored on the month.
Pelfrey loses win streakWednesday 7/30, 9:52 PM CT
Mike Pelfrey tied his shortest outing of the season by lasting just four innings on Wednesday night against the Marlins. Pelfrey fell to 9-7 after giving up eight hits and five runs.

Our View: Pelfrey had won seven times in his last eight starts entering the night, so he was kind of due for a stinker. This was the second time in three starts that he allowed five earned runs but it was also only the second time in his last eight starts that he permitted that many runs to cross the plate.
Maddux to Dodgers deal dead?Wednesday 7/30, 9:47 PM CT
Greg Maddux doesn't appear likely to join the Dodgers, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

Our View: The Padres want the Dodgers to pick up the reaming dollars on Maddux's deal ($10 million this year), something the Dodgers are reluctant to do. The Padres are also engaged in other talks to fill other needs, so it is unclear if this move will happen.
Tulowitzki finds lost strokeWednesday 7/30, 9:44 PM CT
Troy Tulowitzki had three hits on Wednesday night and has racked up 13 hits over his last six games to boost his average from .195 to .241.

Our View: Now that's more like it young man. It was only a matter of time before this stud started swinging the stick, and it looks like he is heating up just as the Rockies are ready to make a run in the NL West.
Iannetta blasts home runWednesday 7/30, 9:36 PM CT
Chris Iannetta hit a 3-run homer on Wednesday night and is not up to 12 home runs and 44 RBI in just 203 AB.

Our View: Iannetta has long been known as a potential every day backstop, and he is proving himself to be the clubs catcher of the future. Look for him to continue to steal at-bats from Yorvit Torreabla.
Doumit hitting .333Wednesday 7/30, 9:33 PM CT
Ryan Doumit went 2-for-5 on Wednesday night as he knocked in his 39th run of the season.

Our View: What an amazing find this guy has been this season. Doumit has put up at least two bingos in six of his last nine games and he is hitting .352 in 13 games since the All-Star break.
Duke pounded by RockiesWednesday 7/30, 9:29 PM CT
Zach Duke fell to 4-9 on the year on Wednesday night after being hit hard to the tune of six runs in five innings against the Rockies.

Our View: Duke has now lost five straight decisions and hasn't won in nine starts. As recently as July 1st his ERA was 3.88, but after tonight's beat down it sits at 5.27.
Cook wins 14thWednesday 7/30, 9:26 PM CT
Aaron Cook won his 14th game on Friday night as held the Pirates to four runs over seven innings. Cook wasn't dazzling but he won his third straight start.

Our View: Cook has never won more than nine games before this season. His ERA (3.53) and WHIP (1.25) are spectacular for a pitcher who calls Coors Field home, even is he is deficient in strikeouts (4.15 K/9).
Morrow to starting rotation?Wednesday 7/30, 9:18 PM CT
Closer Brandon Morrow might be moved back into the starting rotation for the Mariners, according to MLB.com. If the team decides to make this move, Morrow will likely be sent down to the minors where he would work on building up his stamina in the month of August with a likely return in late August early September to the Mariners rotation.

Our View: How lost is this franchise? Morrow has arguably been be the best closer in the AL since he took over for J.J. Putz, and it's not as if Putz is fully healthy and ready to resume handling the ninth inning. Morrow as a starter long term may be a great move, but in the short term it would be a devastating change to his current fantasy owners.
Manny to Florida trade almost officialWednesday 7/30, 9:04 PM CT
The Manny Ramirez to Florida trade has been completed pending the approval of Manny Ramirez who will need to waive his no trade clause, according to Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus.

Our View: According to the report, Manny will end up in Florida while the Pirates will receive Jeremy Hermida and three prospects, while Jason Bay and John Grabow will now become members of the Red Sox. Again the deal isn't official, but it's getting darn close.
Blalock wants to remain at thirdWednesday 7/30, 8:54 PM CT
Hank Blalock is currently on the DL due to inflammation in his right shoulder but he stated on Wednesday that he wanted to remain a third baseman, according to MLB.com. "I'm going to keep trying to play third base to the best of my ability," Blalock said. "Hopefully, I'll be ready to go when the 15 days are up."

Our View: Blalock offered to shift to first base when the team needed a bat there, but the emergence of rookie slugger Chris Davis has made that a moot point. Blalock just needs to stay healthy at this point of his career, and given the trouble he has had staying healthy a move back to third base probably wouldn't help him to keep his bat in the lineup.
Manny in three way deal?Wednesday 7/30, 8:38 PM CT
Manny Ramirez might be at the center of a three way deal that includes the Red Sox, Marlins and Pirates, according to the Beaver County Times.

Our View: See if you can follow this. The Pirates would end up with Jeremy Hermida, the Red Sox would get Jason Bay and Manny would end up in Florida. Jack Wilson could also end up in Boston with Jed Lowrie moving to the Pirates. So many names, so little facts to go on.
Cuddyer takes BPWednesday 7/30, 8:33 PM CT
Michael Cuddyer took some swings on Wednesday for the first time in five weeks and his injured left index finger responded well, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Apparently two cortisone shots helped to get Michael over the hump. He admitted that his hand is still weak and sore, so expect some more work before he embarks on a minor league rehab stint.
Bradley out of lineup on WednesdayWednesday 7/30, 8:28 PM CT
Milton Bradley was held out of the lineup on Wednesday due to a strained left quad and is being listed as day-to-day, according to SLAM Sports.

Our View: Bradley has been hit by a bunch of bumps and bruises of late, but he is still hitting .328 with a 1.023 OPS in 21 July games. Hopefully he will be back in the lineup before the weekend.
Young out of starting lineup due to fingerWednesday 7/30, 8:25 PM CT
Updating an earlier report, Michael Young was indeed out of the lineup on Wednesday because of his broken finger which was too swollen to grip the bat, according to SLAM Sports. "I wouldn't have enough grip to stand up there with a bat and be effective," Young said. "But my body seems to react pretty quickly to treatment. It won't be anything long-term."

Our View: Young might be out of the starting lineup for another day or two, but he did enter the game and hit the go-ahead sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning against the Mariners on this night.
Wainwright to continue bullpen sessionsWednesday 7/30, 8:21 PM CT
Adam Wainwright will throw at least two more bullpen sessions in his attempt to come back from an injured finger after suffering a setback on Tuesday, according to MLB.com. Wainwright will throw breaking balls on Thursday and then a normal bullpen on Saturday before being allowed to face hitters.

Our View: With continued issues with his finger, there is a growing possibility that Wainwright might return in the bullpen and not in the starting rotation.
Mulder out until mid-AugustWednesday 7/30, 8:18 PM CT
Mark Mulder visited the doctor on Wednesday to have his shoulder examined, and he was told to rest for another two weeks, according to MLB.com. Mulder has been on the shelf since July 10th.

Our View: Face it, Mulder it at the crossroads in his career. At this point we wish him all the luck in the world, but he simply doesn't deserve to be on any fantasy roster until he proves he is healthy.
Linebrink progressing wellWednesday 7/30, 8:13 PM CT
Scott Linebrink has responded well to treatment on his injured shoulder, according to MLB.com. Up until this point he has merely been lifting weights, but he should start playing catch this weekend with a return date of sometime in mid-August likely.

Our View: The Sox really miss what Linebrink brought to the table this year which is why there have been rumors of a Huston Street to Chicago deal in the press.
Wood suffers setbackWednesday 7/30, 8:03 PM CT
Kerry Wood had to skip his scheduled throwing session on Wednesday because of the blister on his finger, according to MLB.com. "Initially, they had talked about a simulated game, bringing a few hitters here, and let him get some work in with a pad on his finger," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "That didn't happen, because he's really not close to coming back, so why risk it?"

Our View: Wood can throw his changeup but until he can let loose with his fastball he obviously can't return to the hill. There is therefore no established date for his return, which means Carlos Marmol remains the favorite for saves though rookie Jeff Samardzija could also be in the mix.
Fuentes could still be movedWednesday 7/30, 7:57 PM CT
Brian Fuentes may or may not be dealt but the Rockies have informed teams that they can make one more round of proposals to pick up the lefty bullpen stalwart, according to the Rocky Mountain News.

Our View: The top contenders seem to be the Cardinals, Red Sox, Mets, White Sox and Phillies. If traded, Fuentes could end up remaining a closer or slide into a setup role, so his remaining value this season is totally dependent on what team he ends up on.
Patterson, Bankston sent downWednesday 7/30, 7:52 PM CT
Eric Patterson and Wes Bankston were both optioned to Triple-A on Wednesday, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Patterson was hitless in 10 AB while Bankston was 0-for-20. Still, this news is a bit of a shock from the Patterson angle after the team suggested he would see more time at second base in August.
Hudson to tough it outWednesday 7/30, 7:45 PM CT
Updating an earlier report, it now appears that Tim Hudson will wait to decide upon whether or not he needs Tommy John surgery after a visit with renowned doctor James Andrew left him with the option of waiting a couple of weeks before making a final decision, according to MLB.com. "I'm going to tough it out," Hudson said via a text message.

Our View: Talk about conflicting reports. The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported that two doctors suggested surgery immediately, though Dr. Andrews appears hopeful that some rest and rehab could be the proper prescription to what ails Hudson. Peter Moylan received the same advice from Dr. Andrews earlier this year but after two weeks of rest it was determined that surgery was needed. Will that be the same fate as Hudson?
Hawkins dealt to AstrosWednesday 7/30, 7:35 PM CT
LaTroy Hawkins will be returning to the NL as he was dealt to the Astros in exchange for minor leaguer Matt Cusick, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View: Hawkins will add a solid arm to the Astros bullpen, but he really isn't worth a look even in NL only leagues since a ton of things would have to go wrong in the bullpen for him to even sniff a save chance. As for Cusick, he is currently playing at the Single-A level and is years away from making his mark.
Castro gaining momentumWednesday 7/30, 7:28 PM CT
Kory Castro will be a part of the Nationals future moving forward, according to MLB.com. Castro will see time at third base, outfield and first base the rest of the way, the only in support of the Nationals starters.

Our View: Castro likely won't be anything more than a lefty bat off the bench for the time being, but he could offer enough versatility, which when combined with playing time, could give him some value in NL only leagues.
Atkins provides steady productionWednesday 7/30, 7:24 PM CT
Garrett Atkins is tied for second in the NL with 25 RBI in the month of July during which time he is hitting .313, according to MLB.com. Atkins has also been deadly against right handed pitching this year with a .411 average, second to Albert Pujol's .444 mark.

Our View: Atkins is about as steady a run producer as you'll find, and his 338 RBI since the start of the 2005 season is the seventh best mark in baseball.
Castillo may not start when healthyWednesday 7/30, 7:16 PM CT
Luis Castillo, out since July 3rd with a strained left hip flexor, isn't certain to return to the starting lineup once healthy, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Damon Easley and Argenis Reyes have hit a nearly combined .300 in July providing the Mets with more offense then they were getting from Castillo who is hitting only .261. Given the leg injury, Castillo might not even be capable of bringing the speed that he once supplied leaving him with little fantasy value except in NL only leagues.
Details emerging of possible Manny tradeWednesday 7/30, 7:06 PM CT
Though nothing is official, details of a potential Manny Ramirez to Marlins trade are emerging, according to ESPN. The report speaks of the Marlins including Jeremy Hermida, Ryan Tucker and Mike Stanton, a minor leaguer with huge upside. There is also a version of the deal that replaces Josh Willingham for Hermida.

Our View: Peter Gammons was vociferous in his statements that the Red Sox must simply trade Ramirez because he no longer respects anyone in the Red Sox organization. At this point, it honestly seems that this deal could happen.
Betancourt still searching Wednesday 7/30, 6:59 PM CT
Rafael Betancourt continues to struggle to find the form that made him one of the most dominant relievers in baseball, but the team is still hopeful that he will rebound down the stretch, according to MLB.com. "You look at the depth of his breaking ball and the arm action on his changeup, and it's better," manager Eric Wedge said. "Where he struggles is in regard to how to use it."

Our View: Betancourt could still figure into the mix for saves if things were to suddenly click for him cause the team doesn't appear to have much confidence in Masa Kobayashi in the role, though Betancourt has shown little sign of returning to last year's dominance.
Hudson likely done for yearWednesday 7/30, 6:52 PM CT
Two doctors have recommended that Tim Hudson should undergo Tommy John surgery to repair the injured ligament in his elbow, according the the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Our View: Hudson was reportedly shocked by the diagnosis and was throwing 90 mph in his last outing even with the injury. It appears that his season is over, and his 2009 season is also likely done as well, at least until late in the year if he announces that he will undergo the procedure (a decision is due on Thursday).
Church changes rehab assignmentWednesday 7/30, 6:48 PM CT
The Mets have decided to alter the rehab work of Ryan Church as he will now travel with the team instead of heading to Florida for a minor league assignment as previously planned, according to the New York Post.

Our View: Church is eligible to return on Tuesday, but it is unclear if that is a realistic target date or not. He would more than likely need a couple of games in the minors to get ready.
Glavine throws without painWednesday 7/30, 6:42 PM CT
Tom Glavine was "pleasantly surprised" with his how elbow felt after throwing a three inning simulated game on Wednesday, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Glavine has been on the DL since June 11 with a partially torn flexor tendon in his elbow. He will throw again on Saturday and if that goes well he will head out on a minor league rehab assignment that will probably encapsulate two starts.
Harang has encouraging outingWednesday 7/30, 6:35 PM CT
Aaron Harang (forearm) threw 50 pitches in a simulated game on Wednesday and the results were extremely positive, according to MLB.com. "He looked pretty good," said manager Dusty Baker, who watched from behind the batting cage. "I was surprised that his location was really good and velocity was good. His changeup was pretty good."

Our View: Harang will throw a light session in the bullpen on Friday and if that goes well he will head to Triple-A next week to make a rehab start with a pitch limit of 75. Given that fact, he will likely need to make two starts in the minors putting his return around before middle of August.
Crosby has nice outingWednesday 7/30, 6:30 PM CT
Bobby Crosby had two hits and two RBI for the Athletics on Wednesday.

Our View: Over the last six games Crosby had only two hits so he certainly needed a big outing at the plate. Crosby is now four games away from his first 100 game season since 2004, but since a hot start to the year the injuries have started to mount which has led to a decline in performance (.200 in July).
Gordon walks five timesWednesday 7/30, 6:27 PM CT
Alex Gordon went 0-for-0 on Wednesday thanks to five walks for the Royals against the A's. The five walks were a club record.

Our View: The A's issued only six walks all day, but five went to Gordon who is hitting only .253 on the season with an OBP just above the major league minimum at .345.
Aviles has three more hitsWednesday 7/30, 6:22 PM CT
Mike Aviles had three hits from the leadoff spot for the Royals on Wednesday to raise his average to .325.

Our View: This has been a pretty amazing run for a guy who wasn't on anyone's radar at the start of the season. Aviles continues to impress and shows little sign of slowing down with a .363 average in the month of July (55 AB).
Ziegler extends scoreless streakWednesday 7/30, 6:14 PM CT
Brad Ziegler extended his major league record of scoreless innings to start a career to 30 on Wednesday with three scoreless innings of relief against the Royals.

Our View: If the team moves Huston Street the prevailing belief is that Joey Devine would step into the closers role. Ziegler may have the stuff most teams look for from a closer, but it's hard to argue with the results isn't it?
Street loses againWednesday 7/30, 6:13 PM CT
Huston Street picked up his fourth loss of the year on Wednesday after allowing two hits and two walks in 1.2 innings leading to a single earned run.

Our View: Was this the last game for Street in an Oakland uniform? Street's numbers are down this year with a 4.05 ERA and a 8.68 K/9 mark, but that hasn't stopped many teams from being interested in adding Sheets to their bullpen mix.
Soria reaches 30 savesWednesday 7/30, 6:10 PM CT
Joakim Soria notched his 30th save of the season with a perfect ninth inning on Wednesday.

Our View: How many relievers have ever had a better start to their career than this guy? Through 118 career innings Soria has 47 saves a 2.07 ERA and a 0.84 WHIP. Why would the Royals still be considering moving him back into the rotation with numbers like that?
Bay to Tampa talks slowingWednesday 7/30, 6:06 PM CT
The Jason Bay to the Rays talks are still alive, but according to Jayson Stark of ESPN there was "very little dialogue" between the two teams on Wednesday.

Our View: The Pirates want two top level prospects as well as two other players, and the Rays appear reluctant to meet those demands. If the Red Sox move Manny Ramirez, rumors are circulating that Bay could be targeted as a replacement in Boston.
Ellsbury removed from leadoff roleWednesday 7/30, 6:03 PM CT
Jacoby Ellsbury has been removed from the leadoff spot and will be replaced by Coco Crisp, according to the Providence Journal. Ellsbury will now bat ninth.

Our View: Over the last 35 games Ellsbury has hit .223 going 33-for-148 leading to the demotion. Almost as bad is the fact that he has almost completely stopped running with just one steal in June (22 games). No steals and a poor average equal little fantasy value from the youngster.
Dodgers interested in MadduxWednesday 7/30, 5:37 PM CT
Greg Maddux may not accept a deal to the Phillies but it appears that he could be headed to the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to ESPN.

Our View: Maddux only will accept a deal to another team on the West Coast, and he could be headed back to the club that he pitched for in 2006. Maddux might be only 4-8 on the year, but his WHIP is still solid at 1.29 and his ERA a serviceable 4.29.
Manny could be moved to MarlinsWednesday 7/30, 5:34 PM CT
The Manny Ramirez trade rumors are heating up as Buster Olney of ESPN reports that the Sox are "serious" about moving Manny. Olney also reported that the Marlins appear to be the front runner for Manny's services.

Our View: Olney said that Ramirez was clocked at 6.0 seconds the other night as he "attempted" to beat out a double play. Given that Bengie Molina, who appears to be running in slow motion like the Bionic Man, is faster than that, it is clear why the Sox think Manny is just plain dogging it. After years of discussing moving him, it seems like it might actually happen.
Beltre not headed to SF?Wednesday 7/30, 5:29 PM CT
The Adrian Beltre to San Francisco Giants talk is apparently dying down, according to a report at the Seattle Times.

Our View: The Giants appear willing to take on Beltre and his $12 million contract for next season as they feel a return to the fastball friendly National League could return him to all-star levels. However, the Giants don't want to move any of their young arms, which is why the trade talks have apparently died down.
Colon throws on the sideWednesday 7/30, 5:26 PM CT
Bartolo Colon threw on the side on Wednesday and will throw again on Saturday, according to the Providence Journal. If he avoids a setback he could head out on a rehab assignment next week.

Our View: Colon could serve like a trade deadline addition that could offer a big boost to the Red Sox rotation, that is if he can keep his weight below 300 lbs by avoiding the buffet table.
Barmes to play in OFWednesday 7/30, 5:06 PM CT
Clint Barmes will make his first career start in the outfield tonight for the Rockies, according to the Denver Post.

Our View: The Rockies face a left-hander tonight in Zach Duke, and given that Brad Hawpe is hideous against lefties (.229 in 314 career AB), Barmes will get the start (.296 in 287 career AB).
Casilla could be done for the yearWednesday 7/30, 4:51 PM CT
Alexi Casilla, on the DL due to a torn ligament in his right thumb, will have surgery and probably miss the rest of the season according to a statement he made to the Star Tribune. However, after Casilla made this announcement, the team was quick to say that no official decision has been made and won't be until Alexi visits a hand specialist on Thursday.

Our View: Casilla said he was "going to do surgery for sure", so it is clear that he has already thrown in the towel on the season. Perhaps the exam on Thursday will show otherwise, but it doesn't sound good.
Kendell hits Dempster wellWednesday 7/30, 4:46 PM CT
Jason Kendall may be hitting only .248 on the season, but he is 13-for-29 (.448) against Cubs starter Ryan Dempster who the Brewers face tonight, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Our View: Kendall is only 14-for-82 in July (.171), so he could certainly use a matchup with a pitcher who has had a lot of success against.
Durham to play on WednesdayWednesday 7/30, 4:44 PM CT
Ray Durham is in the lineup tonight for the Brewers after injuring his shin on Tuesday night, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Our View: Durham is 5-for-8 against Ryan Dempster, the Cubs starter tonight, so the team is hopeful that Durham will be able to continue that success. It is unclear if this is a changing of the guard with Rickie Weeks heading into the background, but it certainly is a situation to monitor closely over the next couple of days.
Bay in Pirates lineupWednesday 7/30, 4:36 PM CT
Jason Bay is in the Pirates lineup tonight, meaning that a trade to the Rays or another club likely won't happen this evening, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View: Of course, a trade could still be worked out during the game, but if a deal was close chances are pretty good that Bay would have been held out of the starting lineup. It will be a tense night and morning for Pirates fans, as Bay seems likely to move before the deadline.
Yadier on leaderboardWednesday 7/30, 4:30 PM CT
Yadier Molina has five hits in his last two games to push his average up to .307 on the year, the ninth best mark in the National League.

Our View: Molina actually has hits 5-straight games and is hitting .341 over his last 85 AB. After hitting .216 in 2006, Molina improved to .275 last year and seems intent on bettering that total yet again this season.
Byrd on Dodgers radarWednesday 7/30, 4:25 PM CT
Paul Byrd might be in the sites of the Dodgers, according to a report on Newsday.

Our View: No further information was given in the report. Byrd is just 5-10 on the year with simply middling ratios (4.93 ERA, 1.36 WHIP), but a move to the NL would likely boost his value a bit, especially if he were to work in a pitchers' park like the one at Chavez Ravine.
Young out on WednesdayWednesday 7/30, 4:22 PM CT
Michael Young, suffering from a broken finger, will not be in the lineup on Wednesday night, according to the Star Telegram.

Our View: No word yet on if this is just a day off, or if the injury to his finger has worsened. Young played yesterday but went 0-for-4 at the plate. Here's to hoping that he will be back in action in a day or two.
Hurley to miss startWednesday 7/30, 4:19 PM CT
Eric Hurley will not make the start on Friday because of biceps tendinitis, according to the Star Telegram. No replacement has yet been named.

Our View: Hurley was limited to just two innings on Sunday in his first game back since being activated from the DL, but he finds himself right back on the shelf a mere three days later.
Ibanez not headed to NYWednesday 7/30, 4:13 PM CT
The Mets don't appear willing to move some of their minor league talent and as a result it does not appear that Raul Ibanez will be going to New York, according to ESPN.

Our View: The Mariners want Mets pitcher Jon Niese and a second prospect in the deal, but Omar Minaya seems reluctant to give up more of the young talent that they are looking to be a part of the squad in the future.
Inge to take over at catcherWednesday 7/30, 4:10 PM CT
With the trade of Ivan Rodriguez to the Yankees, Brandon Inge appears to be in line to take over full-time catching duties for the Tigers.

Our View: Inge is only hitting .227 on the year, but he is 9-for-32 (.281) in July with seven RBI, and could make a great waiver-wire grab for those who start two catchers. The Tigers may not be done trading, so keep an eye on if they bring in another catcher to share time with Inge.
Markakis goes 2-for-4 Wednesday 7/30, 3:59 PM CT
Nick Markakis went 2-for-4 with an RBI in Wednesday's 13-3 loss to the Yankees. Both of his hits were singles.

Our View: He extended his hitting streak to six games, and tallied two hits in each of his last two outings.
Abreu leads way in Orioles rout Wednesday 7/30, 3:55 PM CT
Bobby Abreu led the way in Wednesday's 13-3 rout over the Orioles, as he went 3-for-4 with three RBI. He hit a single and two homers.

Our View: He raised his average to .288 and now has 13 homers and 71 RBI. He has recorded three hits in back-to-back games.
Sarfate loses first start of season Wednesday 7/30, 3:51 PM CT
Dennis Sarfate allowed three earned runs on two hits over four innings in Wednesday's 13-3 loss to the Yankees in the Bronx, with three walks and five strikeouts. Most of the damage came on a two-run homer by Bobby Abreu.

Our View: He was handed a loss in his first start of 2008, while replacing Brian Burres in the rotation. Sarafate didn't pitch too poorly in the loss and should remain in the rotation, but shouldn't be considered in anything but deeper AL-only leagues.
Farnsworth traded to Tigers Wednesday 7/30, 3:44 PM CT
Kyle Farnsworth has been traded to the Tigers in exchange for catcher Ivan Rodriguez, according to ESPN.

Our View: Farnsworth will help an ailing Tigers' pen, and his numbers should benefit from playing his home games at pitcher-friendly Comerica Park. Farns could emerge as a candidate to close out games if Fernando Rodney struggles and Joel Zumaya cannot bounce back healthy.
Pudge dealt to Yankees Wednesday 7/30, 3:38 PM CT
Ivan Rodriguez has been dealt to the Yankees in exchange for righty Kyle Farnsworth, according to ESPN.

Our View: The Yankees were also said to be interested in Gerald Laird of the Rangers, but ended up with Pudge. He should start in New York with Jose Molina relegated to the backup role. He is hitting .295 and his home run rate should improve while leaving Comerica Park to play his home games at Yankee Stadium.
Chamberlain shoots down Orioles Wednesday 7/30, 3:31 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain was in command in Wednesday's 13-3 win over Baltimore at Yankee Stadium, as he only issued one earned run on five hits over six innings, with no walks and six strikeouts.

Our View: Chamberlain is in the zone right now, as he only allowed two earned runs over his last three outings (19 innings).
Five clubs targeting Ohman Wednesday 7/30, 3:26 PM CT
There are five teams believed to be interested in Braves' reliever Will Ohman, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Those clubs are the Red Sox, White Sox, Marlins, Tigers, and the aforementioned Cardinals, who are believed to be his mostly likely landing spot.
Mahay wants to remain in KC Wednesday 7/30, 3:21 PM CT
Ron Mahay's name has been circulating in trade rumors, but he mentioned that he would like to remain in Kansas City, according to MLB.com. He said, "I don't want to go anywhere. I don't know what to tell you. My name's been floating around, but nothing's been done." The Royals will be off Thursday when the trade deadline comes around, and he added, "I'll be playing with my kids, hoping I don't get a phone call."

Our View: The 37-year-old lefty is enjoying a strong season with the Royals, as he holds a 1.78 ERA and 1.19 WHIP over 55.2 innings, with 42 strikeouts.
Overbay productive in loss Wednesday 7/30, 3:15 PM CT
Lyle Overbay went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to the Rays.

Our View: Overbay notched his seventh homer of the season, snapping a 33-game drought.
Inglett goes 3-for-5 Wednesday 7/30, 3:10 PM CT
Joe Inglett went 3-for-5 in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to the Rays. All three hits were singles.

Our View: Inglett has recorded three hits in two of his last four games, and raised his season average to .293. He is worth a look right now if you need help in your middle infield in AL-only leagues.
Sox looking for pitching help Wednesday 7/30, 3:04 PM CT
The White Sox covet a starting pitcher or a reliever and have made Orlando Cabrera available as trade bait, according to ESPN.

Our View: The Sox haven't been able to draw much interest in their minor league prospects in any trade talks. Three clubs known to be looking for shortstop help are the Cardinals, division rival Twins, and the Orioles.
Twins inquire about Aurilia Wednesday 7/30, 3:00 PM CT
ESPN reports that the Twins have inquired about Rich Aurilia of the Giants.

Our View: The Twins are dangling Boof Bonser in exchange for Aurilia. The Twins like Aurilia because they covet a right-handed bat and middle infield depth.
