Hunter strugglesFriday 8/22, 11:57 PM CT
Torii Hunter had a difficult time against his former team, coming to the plate four times, failing to get a hit and striking out twice in the Angels 9-0 loss to Minnesota.

Our View: Hunter's poor August continues, and he is batting just .227 for the month. He also has just a single home run and seven RBI on the month. Fantasy owners who can afford to sit him for a while probably should.
Perkins continues to winFriday 8/22, 11:54 PM CT
Glen Perkins picked up his 11th win against just three losses, throwing eight shutout innings to lead Minnesota to a 9-0 win over L.A.

Our View: Perkins ERA went down to 3.90 on the night, and while his K/BB rate still isn't spectacular, he still manages to get the job done for fantasy owners.
Saunders has tough nightFriday 8/22, 11:52 PM CT
Joe Saunders did not have a good night for the Angels, and allowed six earned runs in 5.1 innings of work, and he picked up his sixth loss after falling to the Twins 9-0.

Our View: Bad night for Saunders, but he is allowed one every once in a while. He has provided a lot for fantasy owners this season, and has 14 wins.
Dunn whiffs three timesFriday 8/22, 11:48 PM CT
Tough night for Diamondbacks slugger Adam Dunn, who went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts while leaving five men on base in his team's 5-4 loss to the Marlins.

Our View: Like Dunn's power? Well, then you better like his strikeouts as well, because he will provide plenty of each. Still, his 34 jacks and OBP over .380 sure is helpful to fantasy owners.
Ross hits game winning home runFriday 8/22, 11:46 PM CT
Cody Ross broke a 4-4 tie in the eighth inning with his 18th home run of the season, which led the Marlins to a 5-4 win over Arizona. Ross was 3-for-4 on the night, with two RBI.

Our View: Ross has good power numbers, but his OBP of .317 leaves a lot to be desired, and makes him a candidate only for NL-only leagues.
Johnson strikes out 13Friday 8/22, 11:43 PM CT
Randy Johnson had one of his best games of the season, pitching seven innings, giving up two earned runs on six hits and striking out 13, but the Diamondbacks succumbed to the Marlins by a score of 5-4.

Our View: Johnson should be in all fantasy formats, and he has an ERA under 3.00 for the month of August. He did not get a decision in the team's loss.
Sandoval still hittingFriday 8/22, 11:40 PM CT
Pablo Sandoval now has a six game hitting streak, even though he has only played seven games in the major leagues. His 2-for-4 night helped the Giants beat the Padres 5-0.

Our View: Sandoval's batting average is now .458, and he raked in the minor leagues. If there is a sleeper who can help fantasy teams, it could be him. Don't hesitate to use him as he continues to roll.
Baek takes lossFriday 8/22, 11:37 PM CT
Cha Seung Baek saw his record drop to 4-9 as he went seven innings, but gave up five earned runs on seven hits while striking out eight in San Diego's loss to San Francisco.

Our View: Baek has a decent WHIP and can strike hitters out, but his W-L record and high ERA make him a weak fantasy option.
Lincecum wins againFriday 8/22, 11:35 PM CT
Tim Lincecum continues his push for the Cy Young Award by tossing eight shutout innings against San Diego, giving up just four hits while striking out eight in the Giants 5-0 win.

Our View: Though many believe Brandon Webb has the Cy Young locked up, Lincecum is making a push and quickly gaining supporters. More performances like this and the bandwagon is sure to grow.
Votto gets three hitsFriday 8/22, 11:32 PM CT
Joey Votto helped lead the Reds to a 8-5 win over the Rockies by going 3-for-4 with two RBI while scoring one run.

Our View: Votto continued his solid season for fantasy owners, and he is now six for his last eight in his last two games.
Hernandez nailed againFriday 8/22, 11:29 PM CT
It was yet another shellacking for Livan Hernandez to endure in Colorado, as he picked up his second loss and again gave up six earned runs in 3.2 innings as Colorado fell to the Reds 8-5.

Our View: This is getting painful to watch, as Hernandez has started three games for Colorado and has allowed nine, six and six earned runs, respectively, in his starts.
Harang finally winsFriday 8/22, 11:27 PM CT
Amazingly, Aaron Harang finally pitched like the Aaron Harang that fantasy owners knew and loved. In the Reds 8-5 win over the Rockies, the big right-hander threw six innings and did not allow a single earned run, picking up his fourth win of the season.

Our View: In no way, shape or form does this mean fantasy owners should scramble to pick Harang up. It was one good performance, but let's see him to it another time or two before believing in him again.
Pujols on base four timesFriday 8/22, 10:58 PM CT
Albert Pujols is making a run at Chipper Jones and the NL batting title, as he went 3-for-3 with a walk and three RBI to help the Cardinals obliterate the Braves 18-3.

Our View: Pujols is now just six points behind Jones, .353 to .359. By the end of the teams' series, Pujols could be on top.
Molina drives in fourFriday 8/22, 10:56 PM CT
Yadier Molina went 4-for-5, scored two runs and drove in four as the Cardinals bludgeoned the Braves 18-3.

Our View: Molina had four of the team's astounding 26 hits, and fantasy owners in NL-only leagues could certainly do worse at the catcher position.
Morton cannot throw a strikeFriday 8/22, 10:53 PM CT
Charlie Morton had a very tough night, and could not find the plate, walking five batters and giving up five hits in just 1.1 innings while allowing four earned runs.

Our View: Morton does not belong on fantasy rosters, as his record now stands at 3-8.
Wainwright throws wellFriday 8/22, 10:51 PM CT
Adam Wainwright came off the DL and proceeded to go six innings, surrendering just one run to the Braves while striking out four. He also contributed at the plate by going 3-for-5 in the Cardinals 18-3 demolition of the Braves.

Our View: It is safe to assume that Wainwright will stay in the rotation. He looked very sharp, and one of his four strikeouts was a called third strike to Chipper Jones. Feel safe leaving him in your fantasy rotation.
Griffey gets two hitsFriday 8/22, 10:48 PM CT
Hitting seventh in the order, Ken Griffey Jr. went 2-for-4 and scored a run, but his efforts weren't quite enough as the White Sox fell to the Rays 9-4.

Our View: Griffey is only hitting .260 with Chicago, and his double Friday was just his second extra-base hit with the team. His days of providing fantasy owners with good numbers are over.
Jackson wins tenthFriday 8/22, 10:45 PM CT
Edwin Jackson walked five White Sox but overcame it to go six innings and allow just two earned runs to lead Tampa Bay to a 9-4 win over Chicago.

Our View: Jackson is on a great run, and has provided fantasy owners with a win in five of his last six starts.
Byrd continues to hitFriday 8/22, 10:42 PM CT
Marlon Byrd went 1-for-4 with three RBI after hitting his ninth home run in the Rangers 7-5 loss to the Indians.

Our View: Byrd has a six game hitting streak now, and is batting over .400 in August. He has 10 multiple hit games so this month.
Carmona winsFriday 8/22, 10:38 PM CT
Fausto Carmona threw a solid six innings, surrendering just six hits and not allowing an earned run to pick up his sixth victory in the team's 7-5 win over Texas.

Our View: This is two good starts in a row for Carmona, who has not been consistent since coming off the disabled list. He did walk three, but struck out five as well.
Ransom off to best start everFriday 8/22, 10:34 PM CT
Yankees infielder Cody Ransom could not have possibly dreamed of a better start. After homering in his first major league at-bat Sunday, Ransom took his second at-bat and hit another bomb, a three-run shot when he pinch-hit for Jason Giambi in the ninth inning of the Yankees win over the Orioles.

Our View: Ransom is now 2-for-2 with two home runs, five RBI, a 1.000 average and OBP, and a slugging percentage of 4.000. Not bad for his only two at-bats in a week.
Payton's slide continuesFriday 8/22, 10:30 PM CT
After an 0-for-4 evening in the Orioles 9-4 loss to the Yankees, Jay Payton saw his batting average crumble further downward, all the way to .239. His average has dropped more than 25 points since late June.

Our View: Payton is really struggling, and after having his average at .265 on June 26, it's fallen off dramatically. Payton does not hit for enough power or drive in enough runs for fantasy owners to deal with his poor average.
Abreu goes 5-for-5Friday 8/22, 10:26 PM CT
Bobby Abreu collected five hits in five at-bats for the Yankees to help take down Baltimore by a score of 9-4.

Our View: Abreu also scored twice, drove in a run and was caught stealing. It figures he was trying to get to second base because each of his hits were singles. Still, fantasy owners have nothing to complain about.
Overbay collects two hitsFriday 8/22, 10:22 PM CT
First baseman Lyle Overbay couldn't help Toronto beat the Red Sox, but he gave a solid effort, as he picked up two hits, including his tenth home run.

Our View: Overbay is having a poor August, and for the season is hitting just .269. Not someone that belongs on fantasy teams.
Pedroia drives in threeFriday 8/22, 10:19 PM CT
Dustin Pedroia knocked home three runners, collecting two hits in four at-bats and scoring a run on his 13th home run of the year in Red Sox 8-4 win over Toronto.

Our View: Pedroia has been nothing if not consistent in the summer months. In June he hit .356, in July it was .350, and in August his average is at .354.
Marcum hammeredFriday 8/22, 10:16 PM CT
Shaun Marcum lasted less than four innings, giving up five earned runs on six hits in Toronto's 8-4 loss to the Red Sox. Marcum picked up his sixth loss of the season in the contest.

Our View: Chalk it up to a bad night for Marcum, who had three stellar starts before this. He is still someone to trust in fantasy leagues.
Cabrera homers twiceFriday 8/22, 10:12 PM CT
Miguel Cabrera went 2-for-4 with two home runs and two RBI to help lead the Tigers to a 4-3 win over the Kansas City Royals.

Our View: Cabrera has eight home runs on the month, and his slugging percentage is over .600 in August as well. While his average is not above the .300 mark fantasy owners are accustomed to, he remains an offensive stalwart.
Aviles gets three hitsFriday 8/22, 10:09 PM CT
Mike Aviles went 3-for-5 and scored a run, but it wasn't enough, as the Royals were downed by the Detroit Tigers 4-3.

Our View: Aviles' batting average is now at .333, and for the month of August it is .354. He doesn't walk a lot, so his OBP is not as high as it could be, but overall he should be a major asset to fantasy squads.
Rodney makes it interestingFriday 8/22, 10:07 PM CT
Fernando Rodney made the ninth inning an exasperating one for Tigers fans one again, giving up two runs on three hits but ultimately getting his sixth save of the year in Detroit's 4-3 win over the Royals.

Our View: Rodney struck two batters out, but he also walked a hitter, and his grip on the role as closer has to be very loose.
Hardy knocks in twoFriday 8/22, 10:04 PM CT
J.J. Hardy helped the Brewers nail the Pirates 10-4 by going 2-for-5 with one home run and two RBI. He also scored two runs in the game.

Our View: Hardy has had a miserable August, so fantasy owners should be pleased with Friday's game. He has now hit home runs in two consecutive games, going 4-for-9.
LaRoche continues to struggleFriday 8/22, 10:02 PM CT
Andy LaRoche went 0-for-4 and his average has plummeted to .177 on the season, as the Pirates lost to Milwaukee 10-4.

Our View: LaRoche had a lot of fantasy owners thinking he could do some things when traded to Pittsburgh, but that has not materialized. He holds no fantasy value.
Bush throws wellFriday 8/22, 9:59 PM CT
Dave Bush continued his stellar August, going seven innings and surrendering three earned runs on seven hits to lead the Brewers to a 10-4 win over Pittsburgh.

Our View: Bush has had a very good August, and fantasy owners should take note. Keep in mind that it could go at any point, but he is worth exploring if you need pitching.
Lopez joins BravesFriday 8/22, 9:19 PM CT
The Atlanta Braves have signed pitcher Rodrigo Lopez, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The contract is for the rest of the season with an option for 2008. The right-hander underwent Tommy John surgery in 2007.

Our View: Lopez is not expected to pitch for the team this season, and he will join the team in the spring to see where he is at.
Gorzelanny will make startFriday 8/22, 9:13 PM CT
After being recalled from the minor leagues, Tom Gorzelanny will make the start on Saturday, according to Pirates.com.

Our View: Gorzelanny has been a major disappointment after having a promising year in 2007. He does not warrant a spot on fantasy rosters.
Wigginton continues tearFriday 8/22, 9:02 PM CT
Coming into Friday's game against the Mets, Ty Wigginton was hitting .412 in the month of August. Those numbers were increased during the game, as he went 2-for-4 in the Astros 3-0 loss to the Mets.

Our View: Wigginton was 3-for-13 in his last three games, so despite his mini-slump, he is still racking up hits in August. It's doubtful he's available in your fantasy league, but if he is, pick him up.
Schneider provides the offenseFriday 8/22, 8:59 PM CT
Catcher Brian Schneider is not known for his offensive prowess, but he provided Johan Santana with a two-run home run, giving the lefty all he needed in the Mets 3-0 win over Houston.

Our View: Nice game for Schneider, but he should not be on fantasy rosters, in part due to his numbers, but also because he sees inconsistent playing time.
Oswalt throws complete gameFriday 8/22, 8:57 PM CT
Roy Oswalt hurled a complete game, and allowed just three runs while striking out six, but the Astros failed to score and Oswalt picked up his ninth loss of the season, falling 3-0 to the Mets.

Our View: Solid game for Oswalt, and fantasy owners will be pleased to know that his ERA has dropped in four consecutive contests.
Santana gets win number 12Friday 8/22, 8:54 PM CT
Johan Santana was very good for New York, going seven innings and allowing nary a run while striking out five in the Mets 3-0 win over Houston.

Our View: Santana is rolling. This is the second consecutive game he has not given up a run, covering 16 innings.
Coste has four RBIFriday 8/22, 8:51 PM CT
Phillies catcher Chris Coste did plenty of damage in the team's 8-1 win over the Dodgers. Coste went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI to lead the way.

Our View: Coste has now hit just two home runs since June 28, and he has had a difficult August in terms of batting average, so recommending him for fantasy teams is tough.
Ethier homersFriday 8/22, 8:49 PM CT
Andre Ethier did the only damage for the Dodgers of Friday, going 1-for-4 with a home run, his 16th of the season in his team's 8-1 loss to Philadelphia.

Our View: Five of Ethier's 16 hits in August have been home runs, and he has hit well over .300 for the month as well.
Kendrick wins 11thFriday 8/22, 8:45 PM CT
Kyle Kendrick snapped a personal two-game losing streak and led the Phillies to a 8-1 win over L.A. by going 5.2 innings and surrendering just one run on three hits.

Our View: Kendrick saw his ERA drop under 5.00, but don't let those 11 wins fool you. He does not belong on fantasy rosters, not with his poor K/BB rate and WHIP close to 1.60.
Maddux takes lossFriday 8/22, 8:43 PM CT
In his first start for the Dodgers this season, Greg Maddux did not impress, throwing 5.2 innings and allowing seven runs on nine hits to the Phillies, who won the game 8-1.

Our View: Not a good outing for Maddux. He still has fantasy value in NL-only leagues, and playing for the Dodgers should help to increase his win total.
Willis to remain in minorsFriday 8/22, 8:40 PM CT
The Detroit Tigers will need another starter now that they have sent Nate Robertson to the bullpen, but it won't be Dontrelle Willis, according to Tigers.com. When asked if Willis was a possibility, Tigers manager Jim Leyland said, "I would say the answer to that, as we speak, is 100 percent no."

Our View: Leyland squashed that idea soundly. Willis has been okay as he has worked his way through the Tigers minor league system, but clearly has not done enough for the team to allow him to return. Don't even think about picking him up on fantasy squads should Willis eventually pitch in the big leagues this year.
Jenkins leaves gameFriday 8/22, 8:00 PM CT
Geoff Jenkins left Friday's game against the Dodgers with a right hip strain after playing three innings, according to The Sports Network.

Our View: There is no word on how the injury happened, or if Jenkins will miss an extended period of time.
Burton throws 30 pitchesFriday 8/22, 7:57 PM CT
Reds reliever Jared Burton threw a simulated game in which he hurled 30 pitches, all of which were fastballs and changeups, according to Reds.com.

Our View: On the DL for over a month, Burton could go out on a rehab assignment by the end of next week.
Braun returnsFriday 8/22, 7:54 PM CT
Ryan Braun is back in the lineup for the Brewers after missing 9 of the team's last 11 games, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Great news for fantasy owners, as Braun is one of the biggest bats in the business. He is reportedly fully healthy and should be re-inserted into fantasy lineups.
Wade could return WednesdayFriday 8/22, 7:32 PM CT
Cory Wade has continued to progress in his rehab from shoulder inflammation, and he could return to the team as soon as next Wednesday, according to Dodgers.com.

Our View: Wade's fantasy value is like many other middle relievers: small, unless in specialized formats.
Baldelli to platoonFriday 8/22, 7:28 PM CT
Rocco Baldelli will spend the rest of the season in a platoon situation, playing only when left-handed pitchers are throwing, according to RaysBaseball.com.

Our View: Baldelli is hitting .250, but in just 16 at-bats this year. Playing in a platoon will hurt his fantasy value, but he is certainly an intriguing player for owners to consider.
Bard returnsFriday 8/22, 7:13 PM CT
Catcher Josh Bard returned to the Padres after the team activated him from the DL, according to The Sports Network. To make room for Bard, Josh Carlin was sent to the minors.

Our View: Bard is hitting .209 and is of no importance in fantasy leagues.
Carpenter progressingFriday 8/22, 6:52 PM CT
Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter played long-toss and then threw around 50 pitches in a bullpen session on Friday, according to StLCardinals.com. He will throw again on Sunday, with an even more aggressive session.

Our View: Carpenter is still a ways from returning, but it's not out of the question for fantasy owners to see him back on the mound in early September. But at that point, he'll only get a few starts in, so the question remains if it is worth it to keep him on fantasy rosters or try and get someone else.
Jeter collects hit 2,500Friday 8/22, 6:46 PM CT
With a first inning single off of Orioles hurler Radhames Liz, Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter saw his career hit total reach 2,500, according to The Sports Network.

Our View: Jeter was having a ho-hum type of season, but has seen his average rise from .280 to .297 before Friday's game after hitting .392 so far in August. He has always hit for a high average, and will be at 3,000 hits by 2011 at the latest.
Robertson goes to bullpenFriday 8/22, 6:33 PM CT
Nate Robertson has been removed from the Tigers rotation and will join the team's bullpen, according to the Detroit News.

Our View: Robertson has been bad this year, with an ERA over 6.00, and a WHIP of 1.65. He had little fantasy value before this move and even less now.
Podsednik returnsFriday 8/22, 6:17 PM CT
Scott Podsednik has returned to the team after completing his rehab assignment, according to ColoradoRockies.com.

Our View: Podsednik has minimal value in fantasy leagues, as the job of leadoff speed demon is firmly in the hands of Willy Taveras in Colorado.
Davies recalledFriday 8/22, 5:59 PM CT
Kyle Davies has been recalled from Triple-A Omaha to take the roster spot of the recently disabled Ron Mahay, according to the Kansas City Star.

Our View: Davies will take the mound as a starter on Saturday against the Detroit Tigers. He has minimal fantasy value.
Gordon tears quadFriday 8/22, 5:57 PM CT
Royals third baseman Alex Gordon is probably going to be put on the disabled list with a tear of his right quadricep, according to the Kansas City Star.

Our View: For all the hype surrounding Gordon, his game has never really materialized like many thought it would by now. His numbers are pedestrian - .254 average, 14 home runs, 51 RBI, and can be duplicated by numerous players around the league.
Mahay to go on DLFriday 8/22, 5:55 PM CT
Royals reliever Ron Mahay will be put on the 15-day disabled list with plantar fascia, according to the Kansas City Star.

Our View: Mahay has been a solid performer in the bullpen for the Royals, though as with most middle relievers, his fantasy value is not high.
Wilkerson put on DLFriday 8/22, 5:43 PM CT
Brad Wilkerson has been put on the DL by the Toronto Blue Jays with back spasms, according to The Sports Network.

Our View: Wilkerson is hitting all of .219 with three home runs and has no fantasy value anywhere.
Harris explodesFriday 8/22, 5:25 PM CT
Willie Harris had a huge day for Washington, hitting two home runs, scoring three times and knocking home six as the Nationals demolished the Cubs 13-5.

Our View: This was easily Harris' best performance of the year, so not too much should be read into it. Nonetheless, he could be of service to fantasy owners in NL-only leagues, as he has 12 home runs and eight stolen bases on the year.
Lee homersFriday 8/22, 5:22 PM CT
Derrek Lee went 2-for-4 and hit his 18th home run of the season, but it was not enough as the Cubs fell to the Washington Nationals by a score of 13-5.

Our View: Lee had not hit a home run in nearly a month, since July 27, so fantasy owners have to be pleased with the power. Overall it's been a solid but unspectacular season for Lee.
Lannan gets the winFriday 8/22, 5:20 PM CT
Despite allowing five earned runs in 6.1 innings, Washington pitcher John Lannan got the victory as his offense exploded for 13 runs in the Nationals win over the Cubs.

Our View: This is two ugly outings in a row for Lannan, who allowed eight earned runs in four innings his last start. His ERA has jumped nearly half a run in the two starts, from 3.40 to 3.95. Not what fantasy owners are looking for.
Marquis can't get through sixthFriday 8/22, 5:17 PM CT
Jason Marquis did not throw well for the Cubs, as he managed just 5.1 innings, giving up four earned runs on four hits and three walks in the team's 13-5 loss to Washington.

Our View: Marquis is an average pitcher who won't give fantasy owners a whole lot. It's best to pass on him, except possibly in deep NL-only leagues.
Drew has herniated discFriday 8/22, 5:13 PM CT
J.D. Drew is suffering from a herniated disc in his back, according to the Providence Journal. He had missed three straight games and was still in pain on Friday, so he underwent an MRI, which revealed the condition.

Our View: Though Drew said he hopes he will not need a stint on the DL, the Red Sox may be wise to make such a move because they can backdate it to the day after Drew played his last game.
Neshek not returningFriday 8/22, 5:06 PM CT
Despite hope earlier in the month that he might make a return late this season, Twins reliever Pat Neshek will not make it back, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Our View: Neshek tore a ligament in his throwing elbow in Many and he has spent the summer recovering. He can continue his rehab in the offseason and he should be ready to go next spring.
Howard 51st in OPSFriday 8/22, 5:00 PM CT
Out of the 79 players in the National League, Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard ranks 51st in on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS), according to Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com. He is behind players like Joey Votto in that category.

Our View: Fantasy players are more than a little familiar with Howard's tough year, but that number really puts it into perspective. Howard's OBP is only .317, and he has struck out 167 times - or 35 percent of his at-bats.
Mulder not giving upFriday 8/22, 4:41 PM CT
Cardinals starting pitcher Mark Mulder said he has not given up on his career, and that he will do everything he can to try and resume his big league career, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: Mulder has been seeing doctors, has hired a yoga instructor to help loosen his shoulder and said that he would continue no matter what. It has been a pretty dramatic fall from grace for a guy that used to be one of the game's best pitchers.
Castillo back SaturdayFriday 8/22, 4:34 PM CT
Mets second baseman Luis Castillo will return to the team on Saturday as he concludes his rehab assignment, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View: No word on who will be sent down to make room for Castillo, but the likeliest candidate is Argenis Reyes, who took Castillo's place upon his disablement.
Church in lineupFriday 8/22, 4:30 PM CT
Ryan Church returned to the big leagues and he will start in Friday's game, according to MetsBlog.com.

Our View: Church is expected to play in a platoon role in order to lighten the potential for his post-concussion problems to reappear. Clearly this is not something fantasy owners must be thrilled about, as his value takes a significant drop.
Blalock returnsFriday 8/22, 4:26 PM CT
Hank Blalock has made his way back to the Rangers after completing his rehab assignment, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. He will hit fifth in the order and play first base.

Our View: When healthy, Blalock can certainly contribute to fantasy squads, especially those in AL-only leagues. He is currently hitting .273 with four home runs and 15 RBI. Expect better production now that his shoulder issues seem to be a thing of the past.
Metcalf sent outFriday 8/22, 4:20 PM CT
Travis Metcalf was sent to the Rangers minor league affiliate in Oklahoma in order to make room on the roster for Hank Blalock, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Our View: Metcalf showed good power, with four home runs in 42 at-bats, but he walked just once and struck out ten times, so his plate discipline clearly needs work before he'll be able to contribute to fantasy squads.
Drew to have MRIFriday 8/22, 4:17 PM CT
J.D. Drew will not play on Friday and he is scheduled to have an MRI on his back, which has been causing him pain, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View: Drew was supposed to play Friday, but that plan was scuttled. We'll know more on the extent of the injury once the MRI results are revealed. Until them, stash him on your bench.
Young clearedFriday 8/22, 4:05 PM CT
Dmitri Young will be allowed to take part in baseball related activities now that his diabetes is under control, according to Nationals.com.

Our View: It was thought that Young's season was over as little as a week ago, but the team thinks it is possible for him to come back in September.
Pearce optioned Friday 8/22, 3:29 PM CT
Steve Pearce has been optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Doug Mientkiewicz has been activated from the bereavement list as the corresponding move.

Our View: Pearce failed to impress the Pirates (or the fantasy community) during his stint with the team, as he only hit .224 over 58 at-bats (no homers), with 14 strikeouts.
Liz recalled Friday 8/22, 3:25 PM CT
As expected, Radhames Liz has been recalled from Triple-A Norfolk for Friday's start against the Yankees, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View: The 25-year-old righty went 2-2 with a solid 2.67 ERA over four starts with Norfolk since being demoted. But with Baltimore he went 4-3 over 10 starts, with a poor 7.47 ERA and 1.79 WHIP. He only merits fantasy consideration in deeper AL-only leagues.
Clement is hot Friday 8/22, 3:07 PM CT
Jeff Clement has raised his batting average from .165 to .220, and is third among major league rookies with a .358 average in the month of August, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. He credits his surge to seeing more pitches and he said, "Obviously it's a conscious decision to take more pitches and see the ball more, but I don't think you can do that unless you're comfortable. If you're uncomfortable, you're still going to be up there hacking at everything, and I still find myself doing that in some at-bats and being too aggressive. But as long as I try to stay back and see the ball go deep, I have more success than when I don't."

Our View: He is actually hitless over his last three games, but could prove to be a good sleeper for AL-only leagues down the stretch.
Capps to be activated for Saturday Friday 8/22, 2:45 PM CT
Matt Capps rejoins the Pirates in Milwaukee for a three-game series against the Brewers, and is expected to be activated from the DL prior to Saturday's game, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. He has been recovering from bursitis in his right shoulder.

Our View: He should resume his role as the Pirates' closer, and is worth returning to fantasy lineups.
Mientkiewicz returns to Pirates Friday 8/22, 2:39 PM CT
Doug Mientkiewicz has returned to the Pirates, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. He has been on the bereavement list to be with his wife, who recently had heart surgery.

Our View: Mientkiewicz has been hitting well, but only holds fantasy value in deeper NL-only leagues, as he is forced to share time at the corner infield spots with the LaRoche's.
Gorzelanny called up Friday 8/22, 2:32 PM CT
Tom Gorzelanny has been recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Our View: He will start Saturday against the Brewers. He held a poor 6.57 ERA and 1.83 WHIP prior to his demotion and is not worth fantasy consideration, especially this week against a potent Milwaukee club.
Chamberlain targeted for early Sept. Friday 8/22, 2:10 PM CT
As expected, Joba Chamberlain increased his throwing program to 20 throws on flat ground from 60 feet to a squatting catcher, according to the NY Post. He is recovering from rotator cuff tendinitis and said, "I let a couple go and it felt good."

Our View: He will throw 35 pitches off a mound tomorrow but will be limited to fastballs and change-ups. Manager Joe Girardi does not have a plan for him beyond Saturday, but does not expect him back in New York until early September. At that point, it may be as a reliever.
Kearns scratched Friday 8/22, 2:04 PM CT
Austin Kearns has been scratched from Friday's lineup due to recurring soreness in his elbow, according to the Washington Post.

Our View: The elbow surgery Kearns had at the end of May has left him fighting some residual soreness, something he has to attend to every day. He's generally fine when given a full day to recover between night games, but the night-to-day transition is difficult. Kearns' elbow is just feeling too stiff to start today.
Duckworth candidate for Sunday Friday 8/22, 1:24 PM CT
Brandon Duckworth is a top candidate for Sunday's start in the rotation (Luke Hochevar's slot), according to the KC Star. Employing Duckworth for Sunday would require the Royals to clear space on its 25-man and 40-man rosters. Kip Wells is the other option for Sunday.

Our View: Duckworth doesn't register many strikeouts and the Royals don't provide much run support, meaning he isn't worth fantasy consideration if called into action Sunday.
Davies candidate for Saturday? Friday 8/22, 1:19 PM CT
Kyle Davies is a candidate to start in the rotation Saturday, according to the KC Star. But he can only be recalled from Triple-A Omaha to replace a player put on the DL. The DL candidate would likely be Ron Mahay, who has made just one appearance since August 6 due to an injured foot.

Our View: Davies was inconsistent over 14 starts with Kansas City this season, but still had some success and looked good at times. If recalled for Saturday's start, he is worth a look in deeper AL-only leagues.
Gordon update Friday 8/22, 1:13 PM CT
Alex Gordon felt a twinge in his quad while charging Jamey Carroll’s grounder in the third inning of action against the Indians Thursday, according to the KC Star. Gordon then aggravated the injury while fielding Franklin Gutierrez’s grounder for the final out in the fourth, prior to his early exit. Gordon said, "Hopefully, it’s not much. We’ll see today."

Our View: As of now, he is considered day-to-day. We will keep you posted on his status.
Ramirez unsure of return Friday 8/22, 12:42 PM CT
Hanley Ramirez is unsure when he will be able to return to the Marlins' lineup due to his injured right thumb, according to the Miami Herald. Ramirez said the injured hand makes it difficult to hit and throw, and he added, "We're fighting for a playoff spot. It's kind of tough. I want to play."

Our View: He could still work as a pinch runner, but that will not be good enough for fantasy owners. We will keep you posted on his status.
Rodney could be closer in 2009? Friday 8/22, 12:25 PM CT
The Detroit Free Press believes Fernando Rodney could be the Tigers' best option to close games in 2009. The Tigers' coaching staff made a few adjustments to his delivery. They had him quit turning so much in his windup when he threw his fastball. And they got him to stay more balanced over the rubber during his delivery. The changes have had favorable results and has verified to the team that he can be a full-time closer.

Our View: Barring a collapse down the stretch, Rodney looks to be a top candidate to be the Tigers' closer next season, assuming they don't add a free agent, such as Francisco Rodriguez.
Bush gaining in public opinionFriday 8/22, 12:01 PM CT
Dave Bush has a 1.78 ERA his past three starts (Reds, Nationals and a great outing against the new-look Dodgers). The right-hander has pitched at least seven innings in five of his last seven games, going 3-1 with a 2.77 ERA in that span.

Our View: The stretch started July 5 against the Pirates, when he allowed just one run and four hits in eight innings of work. Rototimes sources can't say enough good things about Bush's form right now. He is doing everything right. His command is spot on, his velocity is the best it's been at any point in his career, his high fastball is almost unhittable and he's pitching smart. Tonight's opponent, the Pirates, have gone from being a threat offensively with Jason Bay and Xavier Nady (.282 team batting average in July) to an anemic entity at the plate without their two sluggers (.236 team batting average since July 31). The difference between the old and the new Pirate lineups should be enough to help Bush perform at the top of his game tonight. It will also help him overcome what was a negative public opinion early in this year's campaign. All that Iraqi business, you know?
Kendrick struggling... againFriday 8/22, 11:55 AM CT
Kyle Kendrick is as streaky as they come. While it appeared in July that the right-hander was rebounding from a sophomore slump -- and returning to his rookie form -- he's coming off two rough starts. One of those against the Dodgers' bats he faces tonight. LA clubbed the Phils starter on Aug. 11 registering seven runs in 3.1 innings.

Our View: In Kendrick's last start, against the soft-hitting Padres at PETCO Park, he was tagged for six runs in 3.2 innings. In each of his last two starts he and the Phils bullpen gave up eight runs. That's likely four more than his mound opponent tonight, Greg Maddux, needs for a win.
Livan still can't get anyone outFriday 8/22, 11:52 AM CT
Livan Hernandez is 1-1 with a 15.58 ERA since arriving in Colorado. On the season he's allowed 216 hits and 108 runs in 148.1 innings of work. Hernandez is 2-6 with a 5.21 ERA in 12 career starts against the Reds, his Friday night opponent.

Our View: There will plenty of balls put in play tonight with Livan and the not-right Aaron Harang pitching. The Reds figure to break out of their RISP slump and the Roks shouldn't have trouble getting good swings off the injured Harang (neck and forearm).
Mussina to be tested tonightFriday 8/22, 11:48 AM CT
Mike Mussina, who is looking for his 17th win of the season tonight at Baltimore, has won six of his last seven overall decisions with a 6-0 record and a 2.68 ERA in eight road starts since early April. However, the O's have been Moose's nemesis this season. Mussina has allowed 13 runs and 13 hits over 5.2 innings in two starts against his former team.

Our View: He is 10-8 with a 4.78 ERA in 25 starts against the O's. Consider that Brian Roberts is 20-for-42, Kevin Millar is 18-for-41 with three homers and Melvin Mora is 15-for-46 with a home run lifetime against Mussina, the Yankee right-hander is in deep tonight.
Santana's strikeouts decreaseFriday 8/22, 11:45 AM CT
The Mets' ace, Johan Santana, may be earning his money down the stretch with his performances, but the decline in his K rate has been a huge disappointment in the fantasy realm. Santana has averaged more than a strike out per inning over the last six seasons. The drop to 7.53 this season in combination with his move to the National League is concerning.

Our View: That said, he's struck out 20 over his last three starts and his 2.75 ERA is stellar.
Bard expected to be activated Friday 8/22, 10:53 AM CT
Josh Bard is expected to be activated from the DL prior to Friday's game against the Giants, according to Padres.com. He has battled a high ankle sprain and a strained right triceps this season.

Our View: Bard will be a welcome addition back to the Padres, but not to fantasy lineups, as he only batted .209 (with one homer and 12 RBI) over 148 at-bats this season.
Peralta closing in on homer record Friday 8/22, 10:44 AM CT
Jhonny Peralta only needs three more homers to tie Woodie Held for the career record by an Indians' shortstop with 85, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Our View: Peralta has four homers over his last 23 games, and is hitting a homer once every 22.4 at-bats for the season.
Anderson to begin rehab Monday Friday 8/22, 10:39 AM CT
Marlon Anderson, who is recovering from a strained left hamstring, is slated to begin a rehab assignment Monday, according to the NY Daily News.

Our View: He isn't expected to be activated until rosters expand in September. He isn't worth waiting for as a fantasy outfielder, as he only hit .222 over 126 at-bats with the Mets this season.
Smith recalledFriday 8/22, 10:05 AM CT
Chris Smith has been recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View: He was brought in to aid Boston's bullpen. This is his fourth stint with the team this season, and allowed one earned run and three walks over 2.1 innings. He won't hold much fantasy value as a middle reliever.
Zambrano breaks toothFriday 8/22, 9:58 AM CT
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Carlos Zambrano broke a piece of his molar while chewing gum Thursday.

Our View: Zambrano expects to see a dentist today. The ailment is not expected to compromise his next start.
Wade to pitch pen session Friday 8/22, 8:54 AM CT
Cory Wade, who is recovering from right shoulder inflammation, will throw a bullpen session in Philadelphia, after which he will be sent on a rehab assignment with double-A Jacksonville, according to the LA Times. Wade is eligible to be activated Sunday.

Our View: He will hold limited fantasy value when he returns to the Dodgers while fighting for playing time as a middle reliever.
Willits could be back Sunday Friday 8/22, 8:48 AM CT
Reggie Willits, who is on the DL while recovering from a mild concussion, could rejoin the Angels Sunday when he is first eligible, according to the LA Times. He went 1-for-3 Wednesday in the first game of a rehab assignment with Class-A Rancho Cucamonga

Our View: He previously wasn't expected back until September. He should remain ignored as a fantasy outfielder, however. He holds a .185 average over 65 at-bats.
Shields hasn't lost role Friday 8/22, 8:44 AM CT
Scot Shields had a rough outing Tuesday and manager Mike Sciosca decided to give the ball to Jose Arrendondo in the eighth inning Wednesday, but Sciosca stated that Shields has not lost his job as the Angels' primary setup man, according to the LA Times. Shields needs to fix a "release-point issue" but Sciosca added, "He's the guy we've got a lot of confidence in to give the ball."

Our View: Shields should remain penciled into lineups in leagues that use middle men.
No progress for Soriano Friday 8/22, 8:22 AM CT
There is no progress for Rafael Soriano and he could be headed for exploratory surgery, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He began a throwing program during the series in New York and had soreness when he raised the intensity on throws. Soriano said he’s frustrated and doesn’t know yet what will have to be done. He has missed most of the season with chronic soreness in the elbow, and three MRI ecams have revealed no ligament damage.

Our View: The latest MRI was last week with Dr. James Andrews, who recommended Soriano begin a throwing program and, if still sore, that he have an exploratory orthroscopy and possible nerve-transposition surgery.
Haren aims to make adjustments Friday 8/22, 7:49 AM CT
Dan Haren gave up five earned runs on 11 hits in his last start against the Padres and is aiming to make adjustments when he faces them again at PETCO Park next week, according to the Arizona Republic. The Padres had success against him while aggressively swinging early in the count, and manager Bob Melvin said, "The Padres definitely are a team that's pretty aggressive but surprised me a little last night. Haren just doesn't walk anybody. As dominant as he's been, I think it was a pretty good approach for them. They'll have to face him again at their place, and Danny's pretty good about making adjustments and can throw breaking stuff for strikes early in the count. So we'll see how adjustments go on both sides."

Our View: Haren is 14-6 with a 3.12 ERA and 1.06 WHIP and looks to fare better in his next outing against San Diego.
Gorzelanny to join Pirates Friday 8/22, 7:36 AM CT
Tom Gorzelanny will be recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Matt Capps is also expected to be activated.

Our View: Gorzelanny is not worth holding for his return, as hemaintained a poor 6.57 ERA and 1.83 WHIP prior to his demotion.
Winn is hot Friday 8/22, 7:05 AM CT
Randy Winn is hitting .500 (17-for-34) over his last eight games, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View: He is also batting .442 (34-for-77) in the month of August. He should remain active in lineups down the stretch.
Colon strong in rehab outing Friday 8/22, 6:59 AM CT
Bartolo Colon, who is recovering from back stiffness, did not allow a hit over four inning's in Thursday's rehab outing with Triple-A Pawtucket, according to the AP. Manager Ron Johnson said, "I thought his velocity’s getting back up to where it was. He’s not there yet as compared with where he was when he was with us early in the year. But that’s to be expected because he hasn’t been out there that many times. He just looked crisp to me." He topped out at 90 mph on the radar gun, consistently threw in the 88-89 range.

Our View: Colon will make another rehab start on Tuesday at Lehigh Valley and will increase his pitch count to five or six innings and 60-65 pitches.
Brown provides the punchFriday 8/22, 12:16 AM CT
Emil Brown went 1-for-3 with a homerun, as he helped the Athletics beat the Mariners 2-0 Thursday night.

Our View: Brown has been heating up as of late, hitting safely in five straight games.
Ichiro's three hits not enoughFriday 8/22, 12:11 AM CT
Ichiro Suzuki went 3-for-4 but didn't manage an RBI or run scored, as Seattle went on to get shutout by Oakland 2-0 on Thursday night.

Our View: Ichiro now has a 6-game hitting streak, while tallying multiple hits in five of the six games.
