NEWSBREAKERS NASCAR
Qualification for LifeLock.com 400 canceledThursday 7/10, 8:31 PM CT
Qualification for the LifeLock.com 400 has been canceled as heavy rain rolled in just after NASCAR dried the track. That will put Kyle Busch on the pole as the field will be set primarily by owner points.

Our View: The two slowest cars in Thursday's practice session were also the ones that failed to make the field by the rule book, so this really doesn't impact a driver's chances to run strong.
Raines, Sauter slowest "go-or-go-homers"Thursday 7/10, 5:53 PM CT
Tony Raines and Johnny Sauter were the two slowest drivers in the first practice session at Chicagoland for the LifeLock.com 400.

Our View: Those are also the two drivers who would go home in the event of rain, so it might not make much difference if qualification is held or canceled.
Biffle wins Chicagoland P1Thursday 7/10, 5:20 PM CT
Greg Biffle posted the fastest single lap in the first practice session for the LifeLock.com 400 at 179.748 mph.

Our View: Biffle is looking for his first career top-10 on this track after finishing 11th in the last three races. Chances are pretty good that he will achieve that.
Truex appeals penalty: Here's whyThursday 7/10, 4:11 PM CT
Martin Truex Jr. and the No. 1 DEI team will appeal the penalty assessed at Daytona International Speedway for an unapproved roof. The penalty includes a point deduction and the suspension of both the crew and car chief.

Our View: The team realistically can't expect to win the appeal, but by going through the motions, they will have Kevin Manion at the track this week and with next week being idle in the Cup series, this gives them a chance to make preparations for his loss.
N'Wide: Franchitti in No. 40Thursday 7/10, 4:03 PM CT
For this week at least, Dario Franchitti will move into the Nationwide No. 40 car. An announcement about how many races he will run in that ride has not yet been made.

Our View: This could be a great move for the driver as it will give him more seat time in a series with drivers more closely matched to his current stock car skill level. He posted the fourth fastest time in the first practice session for the Dollar General 300.
N'Wide: Ky Bush best Jumper in P1Thursday 7/10, 3:57 PM CT
Kyle Busch posted the fastest time in the first practice session for the Dollar General 300 among the Claim Jumpers with a speed of 175.200 mph. That put him second on the speed chart.

Our View: Now that Busch has taken himself out of contention for the championship, he is out to win every race—not that he didn't already have that goal—and he looks like a threat again this week.
N'Wide: Cassill wins Chicago P1Thursday 7/10, 3:55 PM CT
Landon Cassill is back behind the wheel of the No. 5 JR/Hendrick Motorsports car and he rewarded them with the best time in the first practice session for the Dollar General 300. His top speed was 175.296 mph.

Our View: Cassill has shown a lot of promise in 2008, but speed has not been his problem as he is occasionally crash prone.
It's official: Stewart joins Haas-CNCThursday 7/10, 1:43 PM CT
With a press conference at Chicagoland, Tony Stewart announced he will join Haas Automation in 2009 and create Stewart Haas Racing, with Tony Tony Stewart as a 50 percent owner.

Our View: This was not a very well kept secret, but now Stewart is officially a lame duck driver. Don't expect that to impact his fantasy value, however, as he will leave Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) with a bang.
