NEWSBREAKERS NFL
Hamlin talks are on-goingSaturday 7/5, 7:08 PM CT
Ken Hamlin's contract negotiations with the Cowboys continue to be on-going, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Our View: Dallas wants Hamlin to remain with the club long-term, and they placed the franchise tag on him in hopes of working out a deal. A deal must be worked out by mid-July, or Hamlin will have to play under the terms of the one year franchise option.
Bryant Johnson looking for big yearSaturday 7/5, 4:49 PM CT
Several insiders believe that Bryant Johnson and not Issac Bruce will end up being the teams top wide receiver this year, according to the Sacramento Bee.

Our View: Bruce is obviously nearing the end of his career, and Johnson is only working on a 1-year deal as he attempts to prove his worth in order to sign a big money deal. Time will tell, but Johnson does appear primed for a career best season.
Curry slims down, pumps upSaturday 7/5, 11:58 AM CT
Wide receiver Ronald Curry credits new strength and conditioning coach Brad Roll with improving his physique. "I never took the weight room too seriously. I would do just enough," Curry tells the Sacramento Bee. "Coach Roll was really a blessing for me. He got me on my own little plan as far as upper body, lower body, and it's really helped me out. I can feel the difference in my legs, and when I go to block somebody, just me grabbing somebody, I can feel how much stronger I got." Curry plans to play this season at around 200 pounds, which is 10 pounds below his listed weight.

Our View: This is good news for both the Raiders passing game and rushing attack. We don't expect Curry to expand his numbers beyond what we saw in 2006 or 2007, but he should be a nice piece in this growing offense.
McKenzie at 85 percentSaturday 7/5, 7:37 AM CT
Cornerback Mike McKenzie estimates that his recovery from a torn ACL in his right knee is at 85 percent. "I don't want to do anything to jeopardize being ready for Week 1," he informs the New Orleans Times-Picayune. "At the same time, I do have to push it. So I'm looking forward to those preseason games being a real test." McKenzie tore the knee ligament in Week 16.

Our View: The last hurdle can often be the most troublesome with injuries like this, and the Saints are probably just hoping that McKenzie can be a nickel or dime package contributor early in the season. We don't expect him to post his usual numbers.
McAllister pleased with kneeSaturday 7/5, 7:33 AM CT
Running back Deuce McAllister continues to be heppy with his recovery from a torn ACL in his left knee and microfracture surgery in his right knee. "I'm proud and pleased with (my progress)," he tells the New Orleans Times-Picayune. "I don't know if there's really a 'next benchmark' to be met on my part. It's pretty much just getting out there and trying to make plays. That's what I'm looking forward to." McAllister practiced on a limited basis and did individual drills during the June OTAs.

Our View: We're eager to see Deuce take the next step in training camp and the preseason. He should still be considered iffy for Week 1, and his health could ultimately effect how often the Saints use Reggie Bush and how often Drew Brees throws the ball. Brees attempted 98 more passes in 2007 than in 2006.
Carlson still expected to startSaturday 7/5, 7:27 AM CT
Tight end John Carlson remains behind Will Heller and Jeb Putzier on the depth chart, but the Seahawks still expect the rookie to jump to the top of the list this preseason, Pro Football Weekly reports.

Our View: Rookie tight ends rarely make much of an impact in fantasy leagues. Carlson walks into a situation where the Seahawks need as many sets of able hands as possible, which is nice. But Putzier may be just as prepared (if not more so) to help Matt Hasselbeck early in the season.
Kiel dies after crashing carSaturday 7/5, 7:19 AM CT
Safety Terrence Kiel died late Saturday night when he was thrown from a car he was driving, the AP reports. The 27-year-old former Chargers player hit a wall in a San Diego neighborhood, and he died about an hour after the paramedics reached him. Friends had reportedly tried to stop Kiel from driving home from the party. Kiel was a second-round draft pick in 2003 and released in March of 2007.

Our View: Our hearts go out to Kiel's family.
