NEWSBREAKERS NFL
Ellis returnsMonday 8/4, 11:59 PM CT
Greg Ellis returned to the Cowboys practice field after suffering from back spasms over the weekend, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Our View: The 33-year-old Ellis is splitting time with second-year pro Anthony Spencer, who is reportedly blowing people away with his performance, meaning Ellis needed to get back on the field pronto so he wouldn't get lost in the mix.
Morgan excelling in campMonday 8/4, 11:43 PM CT
Rookie wide receiver Josh Morgan has been playing very well in training camp and had a strong scrimmage against the Raiders as the teams practiced together, according to the San Jose Mercury News. "Josh has been outstanding. We're really pleased with him. He's running like crazy and doing a lot of nice things," said offensive coordinator Mike Martz.

Our View: It will be tough for Morgan, a sixth-round selection, to beat out some of the 49ers veterans for playing time, but you never know when the next Marques Colston may come around.
Hampton still not practicingMonday 8/4, 11:14 PM CT
Steelers defensive tackle Casey Hampton has yet to practice because coach Mike Tomlin still does not believe he is in good enough shape, reports the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "It ain't about weight. I can play heavy. I can play anytime. It doesn't matter to me. I always feel like I can play. It's coach's decision when he wants me back out there," Hampton said.

Our View: Hampton needs to get in helmet and pads eventually, as he is the anchor of that defense as nose tackle in the Steelers 3-4 defense, which remains one of the top in fantasy leagues.
Cribbs wants new dealMonday 8/4, 9:38 PM CT
Special teams ace Josh Cribbs wants a new contract despite signing one before the beginning of last season, reports ESPN.com. He may want money comparable to that of Bears returner Devin Hester.

Our View: Hester gets more pub, but Cribbs has held his own in the return game. Last season he returned one punt and two kicks for scores. He is supposed to be getting more reps at receiver this season after snaring just three passes last year. His fantasy status is iffy until he proves he can get it done on a regular basis.
Panthers considering trading SmithMonday 8/4, 9:17 PM CT
The Carolina Panthers have at least considered trading volatile wide receiver Steve Smith, according to Matt Mosley of ESPN.com.

Our View: This seems unlikely, because even though Smith can be a headache, he is also one of the best wideouts in the game, and the Panthers are thin at the position without him.
Schweigert releasedMonday 8/4, 8:49 PM CT
Safety Stuart Schweigert has been released by the Washington Redskins, according to the Washington Post.

Our View: After Schweigert was a big part of the Raiders defense for four seasons, they cut him. The 'Skins subsequently signed him this offseason, but he was third on the depth chart behind Reed Doughty and Kareem Moore.
Rivers close to dealMonday 8/4, 8:43 PM CT
Pro Football Talk reports that linebacker Keith Rivers, and the Cincinnati Bengals are close to a contract. Rivers was the team's first-round pick, and the ninth overall selection.

Our View: Rivers has missed more than a week of training camp, and it is unlikely he will play the large role on defense that the Bengals assumed he would, at least early in the season.
Doucet will miss gameMonday 8/4, 8:18 PM CT
Updating an earlier report, Arizona third-round pick, wide receiver Early Doucet, will miss the Cardinals first preseason game with a hamstring injury, reports the AP.

Our View: Doucet is fighting for playing time, and this injury will not help matters any.
Boldin will sit out preseason openerMonday 8/4, 8:14 PM CT
Cardinals wide receiver Anquan Boldin will miss the team's opening preseason game against New Orleans due to a strained hamstring, according to the AP.

Our View: Boldin had an MRI earlier on the hamstring and there was no major damage found. The Cardinals are doing the right thing by holding him out, as there is no reason for the team to rush him back until he is 100%.
Saunders sings McMichael's praisesMonday 8/4, 7:17 PM CT
Rams offensive coordinator Al Saunders is excited about what tight end Randy McMichael could do in the offense, reports Mike Sando of ESPN.com. "Randy McMichael has been spectacular this training camp, and I would expect him to have a very, very, very profound impact on our offense," Saunders said.

Our View: McMichael was a disappointment last season in St. Louis, catching only 39 passes because he had to spend so much time blocking due to the poor play of the team's offensive line. McMichael could have a very good year and be an asset to fantasy owners.
Snee will have MRIMonday 8/4, 7:03 PM CT
Chris Snee has been dealing with a sore shoulder and will undergo an MRI to determine the problem, according to the New York Post.

Our View: Snee is the team's starter at right guard, so his health is important, but the team does not believe the injury is anything serious.
Forte will start in preseason gameMonday 8/4, 6:26 PM CT
Bears rookie running back Matt Forte will be the starter when the Bears play the Kansas City Chiefs in Thursday's preseason contest, reports the Chicago Tribune.

Our View: Forte had been practicing a lot with the second unit, but this start is confirmation of the glowing reports of his play so far in training camp.
Andrews suffering from depressionMonday 8/4, 5:54 PM CT
Eagles guard Shawn Andrews has not shown up to training camp because he is in a battle with depression, reports the Philadelphia Daily News. "I'm willing to admit that I've been going through a very bad time with depression. I've finally decided to get professional help. It's not something that blossomed up overnight. I'm on medication, trying to get better," Andrews said.

Our View: The Pro Bowl offensive lineman should be applauded for standing up and admitting he has a mental illness. Though that may not be good enough for some in football circles, who still have caveman attitudes about "toughness."
Williams suspendedMonday 8/4, 5:46 PM CT
The career of Jimmy Williams has continued it's downward spiral, as the NFL has suspended him for the first five games of the season, reports Pro Football Weekly. Last year, he was arrested for marijuana possession.

Our View: Williams does not currently have a team, as the Falcons released him only two seasons after he was their second-round pick, (but first selection) in the draft.
Whitner to get MRIMonday 8/4, 5:08 PM CT
Buffalo safety Donte Whitner will undergo an MRI on his ankle after he injured it on Saturday, according to BuffaloBills.com.

Our View: The injury is not supposed to be serious, although that will not really be known until after the MRI. Whitner is a leader on the Bills defense and the team needs to get him back ASAP.
Kelly has knee surgeryMonday 8/4, 5:04 PM CT
Redskins second-round selection, wide receiver Malcolm Kelly, had surgery today to clean up loose particles in his left knee, according to the Washington Post.

Our View: Kelly will miss around two weeks and then return to the practice field. Rookie wide receivers are notoriously dangerous in fantasy football, so pick him up at your own risk.
Texans to be cautious with JohnsonMonday 8/4, 4:50 PM CT
The Houston Texans will be cautious with wide receiver Andre Johnson, who tweaked his groin over the weekend, and will not rush him back, according to HoustonTexans.com. "We’re going to make sure we get him 120 percent back before he comes back out here," said head coach Gary Kubiak.

Our View: Fantasy players around the world thank you, coach Kubiak. The team might hold Johnson out of the team's first preseason game as well, in order to minimize his chance of injury.
Pats sign WelbournMonday 8/4, 4:29 PM CT
The New England Patriots signed guard John Welbourn, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View: Welbourn is 32 years of age, but he started every game for the Kansas City Chiefs last year. He will likely be a backup behind starting guards Stephen Neal and Logan Mankins.
Shipp releasedMonday 8/4, 4:24 PM CT
The Arizona Cardinals have released running back Marcel Shipp, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View: Shipp only had 32 carries the last two years, but he was highly productive his first two seasons, rushing for over 800 yards in both. Though Shipp will be 30 years old in four days, he can still be an effective backup for some NFL team.
Addai expected to be fine Monday 8/4, 3:54 PM CT
Coach Tony Dungy stated that the head injury sustained by Joseph Addai in Sunday's exhibition game against the Redskins in not a concern, according to Colts.com. Dungy added that Addai would have returned to the game if it was a regular season contest.

Our View: Addai is fine and shall remain ranked high as a top-5 fantasy running back.
Vikings won't be punished Monday 8/4, 3:23 PM CT
Adam Schefter of NFL Network indicates that the Vikings will not be punished for allegedly tampering with Packers' quarterback Brett Favre. The Packers made the tampering charge last month based on their belief that Favre had excessive communications with Vikings offensive coordinator Darell Bevell, who previously was Favre’s quarterbacks coach in Green Bay. Favre recently admitted that he talked both to Bevell and to Vikings head coach Brad Childress, but Favre denied that they enticed him to play for the Vikings.

Our View: Minnesota could have been penalized draft picks if found guilty of tampering with Favre.
Gray retires Monday 8/4, 3:04 PM CT
Chris Gray has retired from the NFL, according to The News Tribune.

Our View: He has sustained a low-back spine injury in practice, and doctors didn't really give him a choice about retiring because if he injured it again he risked paralysis. For his immediate future, he would like to do some marketing for the Seahawks. Gray was competing for a backup job at center with the team.
Rolle reports to camp Monday 8/4, 2:59 PM CT
Samari Rolle has reported to training camp Monday after missing the first 11 days due to the death of his father, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View: Rolle feels he is ready to get back to football, and will compete with Fabian Washington for the starting job at right cornerback.
Royal listed as No. 2 WR Monday 8/4, 2:29 PM CT
Eddie Royal is listed as the number two wide receiver opposite Brandon Marshall on the Broncos' first depth chart, according to the Rocky Mountain News. Coach Mike Shanahan said, "You have to put a depth chart out before the first exhibition game. I think we all know there are a number of positions that are very close, but you have to put someone down at first team and second team, even though you really don't know. It's that close."

Our View: Royal is also listed as the number one kick and punt returner. Royal has great speed and has fared very well through the off-season, so it is not really surprising that he is listed ahead of Darrell Jackson, Brandon Stokley, and Keary Colbert on the first depth chart at receiver. He could make some noise as a rookie, but won't likely be consistent enough to count on if he nails down the starting job in Denver.
Webster listed as starting MLB Monday 8/4, 2:21 PM CT
Nate Webster is listed as the starting middle linebacker on the Broncos' first depth chart, according to the Rocky Mountain News.

Our View: Webster is ahead of Niko Koutouvides, but there is still plenty of time for that to change. The winner of the job would have potential to generate solid fantasy numbers.
Carter listed as starter Monday 8/4, 2:13 PM CT
Kevin Carter is listed as the starting left defensive end opposite rising star Gaines Adams, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View: He is holding off Greg White, who led the team with eight sacks in 2007. White would still see plenty of action on passing downs, and is a better IDP prospect than Carter, due to his sack potential.
Metcalf dealing with knee issue Monday 8/4, 1:55 PM CT
Terrence Metcalf is dealing with a knee issue, according to the Chicago Tribune. He had his knee drained Friday after it swelled, and he's not sure how the injury occurred.

Our View: Metcalf has yet to be cleared for Monday's practice, but believes the injury is minor, and he expects to play in Thursday's preseason game against the 49ers. He is competing for a starting job at left guard.
Saints sign Reed Monday 8/4, 1:49 PM CT
The Saints have signed James Reed, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

Our View: Reed registered a career best 65 tackles (44 solo) with the Jets in 2005, but failed to make an impact over two seasons with the Chiefs, who cut him earlier in the year. He shouldn't hold much fantasy value if he makes the Saints as a backup.
Charges against Pearson dropped Monday 8/4, 1:32 PM CT
Two felony charges against Kalvin Pearson have been dropped, according to MLive. Pearson was initially charged with aggravated battery of a pregnant woman and domestic battery by strangulation. During an incident with the alleged victim, Pearson was also charged with a misdemeanor, obstructing or opposing an officer without violence, and that charge still stands.

Our View: Pearson is scheduled to be arraigned on the misdemeanor charge on September 8, but he does not have to appear for that hearing.
Aiken aiming for roster spot Monday 8/4, 1:20 PM CT
Sam Aiken is aiming for the fourth or fifth roster spot at wide receiver, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: He isn't going to make much of an impact if he nails down one of the aforementioned spots at receiver, while fighting for Tom Brady's attention behind Randy Moss, Wes Welker, and Chad Jackson. He would hold most of his value on special teams.
Wilkinson hopes to return next week Monday 8/4, 1:06 PM CT
Gerris Wilkinson, who is nursing a knee injury, hopes to return to training camp at some point next week, according to the NY Post.

Our View: Wilkinson was projected to start at weakside linebacker this season, but the team has brought in Danny Clark due to Wilkinson's absence, and Clark is currently working as the starter.
Lions sign Bing Monday 8/4, 12:57 PM CT
The Lions have signed free agent linebacker Darnell Bing, according to MLive.com.

Our View: Bing was added to replace Teddy Lehman on the roster, who has been placed on the IR/minor list. He will compete for a spot at weakside linebacker, but will be hard-pressed to make the final roster. He was drafted by the Raiders in 2006, but is yet register a tackle in an NFL game.
McCown working as starter Monday 8/4, 12:52 PM CT
Josh McCown is listed as the starting quarterback on the Dolphins' first depth chart, according to the Palm Beach Post.

Our View: Coach Tony Sparano noted that the depth chart can change at any time this week, and he listed the quarterbacks by seniority. John Beck is second with rookie Chad Henne third.
Ginn listed as starter Monday 8/4, 12:47 PM CT
Ted Ginn is listed as the number one receiver on the current Dolphins' depth chart, according to the Palm Beach Post.

Our View: Derek Hagan is listed as his wing-man, with David Kircus working in the slot. Jayson Foster and Anthony Armstrong round out the depth chart. Ginn is also listed as the top kick and punt returner. He should make the highlight reel a few times this season, but shouldn't be drafted higher than a low-end number three wideout.
Thomas will not practice this week Monday 8/4, 12:42 PM CT
Devin Thomas will not be ready to practice fully this week, as he is still bothered by a hamstring ailment he sustained during the first week of training camp, according to the Washington Post.

Williams activated from PUP list Monday 8/4, 12:33 PM CT
Roydell Williams has been activated from the PUP list, according to the Tennessean.

Our View: Williams tied for the team lead with 55 receptions last season, and could push Justin McCareins for the starting job opposite Justin Gage at some point this season, if he fully recovers from his broken ankle.
Lucas could miss 2-3 weeks Monday 8/4, 12:17 PM CT
The Rock Hill Herald states that Ken Lucas could miss 2-3 weeks due to his broken nose.

Our View: He has forgiven Steve Smith for breaking his nose, and noted that the confrontation has been brewing for years, and may actually bring the team closer together. He should be ready to play for Week 1 against San Diego.
Coles returns to practice Monday 8/4, 12:12 PM CT
Laveranues Coles has returned to practice today for the first time since last Tuesday, according to the NY Daily News. Coles missed six practices, including the annual Green and White scrimmage, due to a leg injury.

Our View: If he can manage to stay healthy, he would serve as a solid number two fantasy receiver this season.
Dorsey back at practice Monday 8/4, 12:08 PM CT
DeDe Dorsey returned to practice Monday, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. He has been out while recovering from a hamstring ailment.

Our View: He has some catching up to do, as he currently ranks fourth on the Bengals' depth chart at running back.
Smith returns to practice Monday 8/4, 12:04 PM CT
Steve Smith returned to practice with the Panthers Monday, three days after being sent home for punching team-mate Ken Lucas, according to the AP. He broke Lucas' nose, and Coach John Fox said, "What he did was wrong. We take it very serious. He’s being punished severely. It’s an act that’s inexcusable and it can’t happen."

Our View: Smith has been suspended for the first two games of the regular season, but will be allowed to participate in all practices and preseason contests. The Panthers play the Jaguars in their exhibition opener Saturday.

Glenn Dorsey is expected to miss a week after spraining his left knee during practice over the weekend, according to the AP.

Redding remains out Monday 8/4, 10:55 AM CT
Cory Redding missed his second straight day of practice Monday due to his groin injury, according to MLive.com.

Our View: The team did not indicate when Redding is expected to resume practicing. They have a lot invested in him, as he inked a seven-year extension in July worth $49 million.
Mulitalo removed from PUP list Monday 8/4, 10:51 AM CT

Sims returns to practice Monday 8/4, 10:42 AM CT

Our View: Sims should be fine for Week 1 against the Falcons. He may sit out the preseason opener, just as a precaution.
Galloway sits out Monday 8/4, 10:38 AM CT
Coach Jon Gruden expected Joey Galloway to start participating in practice Monday, but the veteran receiver is once again working out on his own, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View: Galloway walked onto the field wearing football cleats and a helmet, but he was carrying running shoes on a day when everyone else is wearing shoulder pads. He has been dealing with a sore groin since before camp started.

Piscitelli determined Monday 8/4, 10:15 AM CT
Sabby Piscitelli is a determined man in training camp after his broken foot cost him most of his rookie season in 2007, according to the St. Petersburg Times. He said, "My determination has been one of my best aspects, but I think it's even greater this year. Coming out and getting hurt last year, I've got to prove myself, man. I haven't done anything at this level, and I'm excited to get out there and show my abilities."

Our View: He is making an impact in the early going of training camp, as he broke up several passes in Sunday's practice. Coach Jon Gruden has been pleased with his range and noted that he looks like a natural play-maker. He should push for playing time at safety this season.
Harris falling out of favor Monday 8/4, 9:35 AM CT
Napoleon Harris has fallen out of favor with the Chiefs and is currently working as a backup behind Pat Thomas at middle linebacker, according to the Kansas City Star.

Our View: Harris fell out of favor in Oakland and Minnesota as well. He racked up 116 tackles (83 solo) with Kansas City last season, but should not be drafted in IDP leagues in 2008.
Williams feeling great Monday 8/4, 9:27 AM CT
Tramon Williams has returned to the field following his bout with a groin injury, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. He said, "I feel great. I had no problem with the injury."

Our View: Williams is a top candidate for the nickel cornerback role this season, and the Packers are pleased he is back at practice.
Ellis has edge for No. 5 spot. Monday 8/4, 9:21 AM CT
MLive.com indicates that Devale Ellis has a sizable edge for the number five spot at wide receiver. He is having a strong training camp, and is ahead of Brandon Middleton and Kenneth Moore for the final receiving spot on the Lions' depth chart. Ellis said, "The NFL is all about competition and I've never been one scared of competition. I was a tryout guy and I could've tried out for other teams, but I wanted to come to the Lions. It was a challenge to me."

Our View: Ellis has great speed, but is still raw as a receiver, and looks to see most of his action on special teams if he holds on to make the final roster. The fifth receiver will also be much less of a factor with Mike Martz no longer at the controls of the Lions' offense.
Bryant misses practice Monday 8/4, 9:14 AM CT
Antonio Bryant missed Sunday's practice due to a swollen right knee, according to the Orlando Sentinel. He is considered day-to-day.

Our View: Bryant has previously missed some practice time in camp due to cramps from dehydration. His ailments could hinder his bid for the number two role opposite Joey Galloway. He is competing with Ike Hilliard and Michael Clayton for the job.

Jeff Garcia is expected to miss a few more days of camp due to his strained calf, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

Doucet may miss 1st preseason gameMonday 8/4, 8:48 AM CT
The Arizona Republic states that Early Doucet may miss the Cardinals' first preseason game due to his hamstring ailment.

Cardinals pleased with Keith Monday 8/4, 8:43 AM CT
The Cardinals have been pleased with seventh-round pick Brandon Keith, according to the Arizona Republic. Keith has shown surprising quickness and agility for someone who is 6-5 and 343 pounds.

Gordon leader for nickel role Monday 8/4, 8:13 AM CT
Charles Gordon is currently leading Benny Sapp and Marcus McCauley in the battle for the nickel role in the Vikings' secondary, according to the Star Tribune.

Our View: Gordon could see the field often while the opposition employs multiple-receiver sets, especially against Green Bay, and Gordon could be worth a look in very deep IDP leagues.
Holmes returns Monday 8/4, 7:50 AM CT
Santonio Holmes has returned to training camp after missing the previous two days due to a death in his family, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: Holmes will not be affected by missing a few days early in camp. The rising star is projected to register his first 1,000-yard campaign in 2008.

He is nursing a strained hamstring, and said, "I can run and do all these things, defensive back drills. But there's a difference between doing the drills and jogging, and actually going out and competing. I was able to do the conditioning test and all the running things, but it's tough to have the transition speed, that really explosive speed."

Our View: Coach Mike Tomlin indicated he could be back in three days, or a week.
Rivers still unsigned Monday 8/4, 7:33 AM CT
Keith Rivers remains unsigned and the team is still far apart in contract negotiations, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: The rookie first-rounder was expected to play a big role in the Bengals' defense this season as the starting weakside linebacker, but his chance to make an impact early dwindles with each day of camp that he misses due to his holdout.
Heyer suffers knee injury Monday 8/4, 7:26 AM CT
Stephon Heyer has sustained a knee sprain during Sunday's exhibition game against the Colts, according to the Washington Post.

Our View: His injury is believed to be minor and he is expected to be fine for Week 1. Heyer provides depth as the top backup at offensive tackle.
Lelie returns to practice Monday 8/4, 7:23 AM CT
Ashley Lelie returned to practice following his bout with a calf injury, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View: He could not afford to miss too much time in training camp, as he is fighting with Arnaz Battle, Jason Hill, and rookie Josh Morgan to make the 49ers' roster.
Walter leading No. 2 QB race Monday 8/4, 7:18 AM CT
Andrew Walter is currently the frontrunner for the number two quarterback job behind starter JaMarcus Russell, according to the SF Chronicle. He said, "Well, I understand JaMarcus is the starter. That's not going to change regardless of anything, barring injury. Am I happy with that? No. I want to be a starter. I've always said I don't want to be a backup in the NFL."

Our View: Walter has a good arm and is accurate, but is not a good fit for the Raiders' offense, as he is a pocket passer and their system requires a mobile quarterback who can run play-action rollouts and bootlegs. Hopefully JaMarcus Russell can stay intact over the full 16-game slate.
Jones most improved Monday 8/4, 7:00 AM CT
Brandon Jones is the most improved player at Titans' camp, according to the Tennessean. He’s looked good catching the ball, and he seems comfortable in the slot.

Our View: Jones has flashed big-play ability at times over his first three seasons in the NFL, but struggled with consistency. Jones is currently working as the number three receiver ahead of Biren Ealy, and could be worth a look as a possible late-round sleeper candidate.
