Bears may be the first to call PenningtonWednesday 8/6, 11:53 PM CT
With news that Brett Favre has been traded to the New York Jets, the talk will (eventually) turn to veteran passer Chad Pennington . In fact, writer Brad Briggs has already taken note and submitted an article for tommorrow's paper, urging the fans of the Chicago Bears to contact the team and encourage the signing of Pennington in Chicago, according to the Chicago Sun Times.

Our View: It is a fair point to note Pennington is getting on in years and will not present an option that can be viewed as move for the future. However, with Kyle Orton and Rex Grossman working to earn snaps as the starting passer, it would seem wise for the Bears to at least consider a move to add a worthy veteran arm of reliability. The Bears are also rumored to be tracking the status of Chris Simms in Tampa Bay, much younger and much more likely to stick around for a few years. We'll track the situation and see if Pennington gets the call... assuming Favre reports to New York.
Favre unhappy with trade???Wednesday 8/6, 11:38 PM CT
It never ends. With the report that the Packers and Jets have agreed on a trade sending Brett Favre to New York, Chris Mortensen is now reporting that many obstacles need to be cleared to turn this into a reality, the most daunting of which would be Brett Favre, as reported on ESPN.

Our View: Mort reports Favre is dying to get back in the league, but he had expressed strong concerns about going to New York. He wasn't excited about their team or their chances to compete, and he had pushed the Packers to trade him to Tampa Bay. Mort now believes the Packers simply ignored Favre and did what was best for them, and in fact may have intentionally designed this deal to influence Favre to once again consider retirement. He reports the Jets are likely to be on the phone right now, attempting to convince Favre to join the Jets, but in the end, the veteran passer still has the power in that he can still retire and walk away from it all. If his anger with the Packers is as strong as most reporters and friends believe it to be, that is not out of the realm of possibility. There will be more drama tomorrow, assuming this is not easily settled (and it sounds as if that is a long shot). We'll keep you posted along the way.
Pacman ready for Dallas debutWednesday 8/6, 11:33 PM CT
Pacman Jones , the still-suspended cornerback for the Dallas Cowboys, is preparing for his debut with his new team, allowed to play in the preseason game on Saturday night at San Diego. However, the team still doesn't know when it will find out if he will be fully reinstated by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for the regular season, according to the Associated Press. Goodell has said only that a decision on "Pacman" would come before the regular season, and could come as late as the week of the Cowboys' opener September 7th at Cleveland.

Our View: Jones has been working primarily on the right side of the defense, listed behind starting cornerback Anthony Henry on the early depth chart. You can bet Pacman will be pushing to take that top spot when he does get on the field, and we expect the frustrations and turmoil of the last year to motivate him to new levels of performance. Stay tuned.
White sits out with sore backWednesday 8/6, 11:06 PM CT
Titans running back LenDale White was held out of practice today with tightness in his lower back, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: There is little reason for concern, though it should be noted that White would be wise not to fall back into old habits. After being drafted out of USC, White took it easy, added way too much weight on the buffet circuit, and found himself as one of the most concerning performers of his draft class despite high expectation. Last season he got back on track, hitting the weights and getting back in shape to become the Titans' top choice for rushing tasks. This year his job is once again being challenged, this time by top rookie Chris Johnson. If he struggles and lets minor pain and injury keep him off the field, he'll fall once more.
Favre traded to JetsWednesday 8/6, 10:49 PM CT
According to Jay Glazer, it is over. The Green Bay Packers and New York Jets have completed a trade agreement sending Brett Favre to New York, though Glazer is unsure of the exact details of the compensation coming back to Green Bay, according to FoxSports.com.

Our View: As a result of this, the Jets will likely release a quarterback. Signs have been pointing to Chad Pennington as the likely culprit because the team will need to free up cap room to fit Favre's contract under the salary cap. The Packers had been hopeful of getting a deal done with the Jets for two reasons. One, it was the better offer on the table as far as the quality of the compensation. Two, it sends Favre out of the conference, meaning a meeting in the playoffs is an extreme longshot. We will bring updated information as it comes in.
Hackett moves to top spot on Carolina receiver listWednesday 8/6, 9:49 PM CT
With Steve Smith suffering a two-game suspension for fighting with teammate Ken Lucas during training camp, the Panthers have moved free-agent acquisition D.J. Hackett to the spot at wide receiver on the depth chart and will give him every opportunity to perform as such, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Hackett showed great potential at Seattle but was hampered by various injuries and failed to emerge from a rather deep group of veteran targets. He came to Carolina based on promises of new opportunity and significant playing time. Now he will get it, and we'll see if those flashes of promise will turn into production on the field.
Gamble tweeks hammyWednesday 8/6, 9:42 PM CT
Carolina Panthers CB Chris Gamble tweaked his hamstring during Wednesday's practice while attempting to defend a pass, according to the Charlotte Observer.

Our View: Gamble did not return to practice, but team officials believe that the injury is not serious.
Conflicting reports on Favre trade negotiationsWednesday 8/6, 9:39 PM CT
As the trade talks swirling around Brett Favre continue, a report filed via telecast on ESPN from Sal Paolantonio indicates the Green Bay Packers have been offered, contrary to reports filed by Peter King of SI.com, a conditional 4th-round pick from the New York Jets and a conditional 3rd-round pick from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for the future Hall of Famer. However, Paolantonio reports the Packers are asking the Bucs to come up with a conditional 3rd-rounder that could escalate to a 1st based on team performance as well as a player, presumably veteran quarterback Brian Griese, to get a deal done.

Our View: Back and forth... we keep getting conflicting reports on what is offered, what the Packers are seeking, and what is likely to happen. It would seem these teams are working into the night to get this done, so we hope to have it finalized soon (for the sanity of us all).
Ravens tab Rice as preseason starterWednesday 8/6, 9:25 PM CT
The Baltimore Ravens have announced rookie rusher Ray Rice will be working as the team's starting running back in their first preseason game on Thursday as they face the New England Patriots, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Rice was drafted with the 55th overall pick after rushing for a school-record 4,926 yards during three sensational seasons at Rutgers. He is expected to be a backup as rookie, but will start against the Patriots because Willis McGahee is sidelined with a knee injury. Rice has already made a solid impression in training camp. Now it's time for him to show what he can do against one of pro football's finest defensive units.
Bulluck pondering future, with or without TitansWednesday 8/6, 9:09 PM CT
Pro Bowl Tennessee linebacker Keith Bulluck reports he is concerned, as a veteran facing the final two years of his current contract, with the history the franchise has built in terms of dealing with veterans due for contract extensions, according to the Tennessean. Set to begin his ninth season in Tennessee, Bulluck admitted it's hard to ignore the organization's previous dealings with some older veterans. He said he's not looking for a contract extension, however, and doesn't expect any conversations to take place between his agent and the team any time soon.

Our View: Steve McNair, the quarterback who took the Titans to Super Bowl XXXIV, was traded to the Ravens before he entered the final year of his contract in 2006. The Titans released Eddie George, the franchise's all-time leading rusher, in 2003. Bulluck's contract expires following the 2009 season. He's scheduled to make $4.25 million in 2008 and $5.5 million in 2009, along with a $1 million roster bonus next spring. If Bulluck plays well again this season, the Titans probably would consider trying to sign him to an extension before he hits the last year of his deal. However, in the past they have simply cut ties and let those large contracts go to other payrolls.
Bell out of shape, or just injured?Wednesday 8/6, 8:54 PM CT
Earlier today we reported newly-signed rusher Mike Bell is not likely to hit the field for Houston as they face his former employer, the Denver Broncos, in preseason action on Saturday. This evening a report from the local beat writer suggests Bell has arrived in camp in poor shape, thus leading to his injury on the first day of practice with his new Texan teammates, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View: Coach Gary Kubiak didn't say as much, at least not directly. Asked about Bell, Kubiak suggests he is "not even close" to ready for play, and that seems to give some credence to the report that Bell is out of shape and struggling to get into playing form. We'll keep you posted on his progress moving forward.
A-Johnson may get into first preseason game after allWednesday 8/6, 8:48 PM CT
While all reports have indicated top Houston receiver Andre Johnson is not likely to appear in the Texans' first preseason game of the season, reports today suggest there is still a chance he could see some action in that game, according to the team's official website. “I would say if we were playing a regular season game this week, we’d be pushing him,” coach Gary Kubiak said. “And I think it would be close whether or not he could play. Since we’re in the situation we’re in, in preseason, we’ll be extra cautious with him. He’s conditioning with Kevin right now and hopefully we get him back to work next week.”

Our View: Johnson has been in the pool rehabbing his groin while head athletic trainer Kevin Bastin supervises his workouts. On Wednesday, Johnson did a little bit of running, but coaches want to make sure he is 100 percent healthy before he steps on the field in the preseason. Johnson’s injury isn’t major and doesn’t require surgery. He’s had some soreness, but his groin has been feeling healthier each day. We'll see if he gets in, though as fantasy owners we would prefer to see him rest.
O'Sullivan gets 1st preseason startWednesday 8/6, 8:44 PM CT
The San Francisco 49ers have announced quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan will start the team's first preseason game, according to ProFootballTalk.com. The move doesn’t mean that O’Sullivan is at the top of the depth chart. He’ll play the first 22 minutes of the game, and Smith will finish the first half and start the third quarter. Hill will finish the second half.

Our View: It has been believed that Alex Smith and Shaun Hill were the top men on the chart, but O’Sullivan took all of the 1st-team repetitions during Wednesday afternoon’s practice. He has been gaining the favor of coaches and could be ready to make a case for the starting job, if that position is as truly open as coach Mike Nolan has indicated. As always, we'll keep you posted as this situation moves forward.
Seattle to use Jones, Morris in tandem as receiversWednesday 8/6, 8:27 PM CT
Reports out of Seattle indicate coach Mike Holmgren has every intention of using both Julius Jones and Maurice Morris as vital parts of the offense, and both are likely to receive a healthy dose of work as receivers, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

Our View: According to the report, Holmgren fears neither rusher is capable of working as the primary guy and thus they will be used in tandem, but the hope of getting them involved in the passing game is rather intriguing. Former top rusher Shaun Alexander was never a threat in the passing game, but both Jones and Morris have enjoyed strong production in such a role, and those efforts could increase their fantasy value. We'll keep you posted on their progress as training camp moves along.
Smith works with 1st-team offenseWednesday 8/6, 8:23 PM CT
Rookie rusher Kevin Smith enjoyed work with the team's 1st-string offense today as veteran Tatum Bell was absent for personal reasons, according to MLive.com.

Our View: Smith is certainly looking like a rookie worthy of wager in fantasy leagues, and getting work with the 1st-team offense could give him a chance to move up the depth chart. The most recent release of that chart from the Lions lists Smith ahead of Brian Calhoun and now he's taking aim at Bell for the starting honors. However, keep in mind the risk involved in Smith as a fantasy commodity. He carried the ball 450 times as season, his last in collegiate football. That's a concern no matter what league you play in.
Bradshaw will not be suspendedWednesday 8/6, 8:19 PM CT
The NFL league office has announced New York Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw will not be suspended as a result of his recent parole violation resulting in 30 days of jail time, according to NFL.com.

Our View: Bradshaw recently served a 30-day jail sentence in Virginia for off-field issues that came before the start of his pro career. This is good news for fantasy owners seeking a worthy wager in the late rounds of your fantasy draft. There are few running backs that have displayed the burst Bradshaw put on the field during the Super Bowl last season, working against a strong New England defense. It is fair to expect a share of the workload that could grow if he shines.
Gates still uncertain for start of regular seasonWednesday 8/6, 8:15 PM CT
Chargers tight end Antonio Gates has been present at Chargers training camp, but he hasn't practiced with teammates during drills as he continues to nurse his surgically-repaired foot. However, the team reports he is running and making cuts once or twice a day instead, and while the veteran believes he'll "definitely be ready for the opener" against the Carolina Panthers, Gates suggests he won't return at less than 100 percent, according to NFL.com. "This team is too talented and too dedicated to winning for me to come back and not be ready to contribute," Gates told the Tribune. "I wouldn't shortchange this team. Being out there and playing is one thing, but contributing is another."

Our View: While recent reports have been positive, there's still a chance that he'll miss the start of the season or be placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. The latter scenario would force him to miss the first six weeks, or close to half of fantasy football's standard regular season. Owners should watch this a tinge of concern, and it would be wise to carry insurance with a reliable backup option should Gates fail to gain full health in time for Week 1. As always, we'll keep you posted.
Norwood to get more carries in '08Wednesday 8/6, 8:04 PM CT
While the addition of Michael Turner has most fantasy owners looking at the former Charger as the rusher of choice in Atlanta, reports from camp indicate new coach Mike Smith is looking to give more opportunity to Jerious Norwood , according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View: Norwood has averaged 6.2 yards per carry but has just 202 combined carries over the past two years. However, the Falcons gave Michael Turner $35 million earlier this offseason to be the primary back, but with the addition of rookie quarterback Matt Ryan and his potential rise to the starting job, the Falcons want to be prepared by offering both rushers in various packages seeking to take focus off the pass. We will see if it comes true as fantasy owners have yearned for Norwood to get more carries. He clearly has the game to play. Now the Falcons may final give him that opportunity.
Jets offering conditional 1st-round pick for FavreWednesday 8/6, 7:59 PM CT
We are now receiving word that the Jets may be offering a conditional 1st-round draft pick in 2009 to the Packers in exchange for veteran passer Brett Favre , according to Peter King of SI.com.

Our View: With Favre slated to be traded to either the Jets or Buccaneers, Peter King of SI.com reports that he has heard reliably that the Jets are offering the Packers a third-round draft pick that could rise to a first-round pick depending on the team’s performance and how well Favre plays. Per King, the Buccaneers would definitely not offer that kind of a package for Favre. That meshes with the previous report from Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, who said the Jets were making the Packers a much better offer than the Buccaneers were, but that Favre hadn’t warmed up to the possibility of playing in New York.
Cutler hitting his stride in campWednesday 8/6, 7:55 PM CT
The Denver Broncos are happy to report quarterback Jay Cutler is enjoying a wonderful training camp, feeling no ill effects from his recently-diagnosed diabetes and working in top physical shape, according to the Rocky Mountain News.

Our View: Cutler has returned to his normal playing weight, 233 pounds, after shedding pounds due to the diet changes implimented to help his diabetes. Cutler also reports the fatigue and pain he felt during training camp at this time last year is no longer there to be fought, thus he feels great and is rounding into form nicely.
Westbrook believes new contract is nearWednesday 8/6, 7:50 PM CT
Eagles rusher Brian Westbrook spoke with reporters today and indicates he is optimistic the Eagles and his agent will reach terms on a new contract agreement soon, according to PhiladelphiaEagles.com. While the Eagles' star running back focuses on football, his agent and the team's front office are working on the specifics to ensure a deal gets worked out. "I'm positive. I'm really optimistic about how things have been going," Westbrook said during his press conference on Wednesday.

Our View: Westbrook said that he could play as much as a quarter-and-a-half on Friday in Pittsburgh, but his time on the field hinges on what head coach Andy Reid wants. The preseason is not a time where No. 36 tries to shine. Fantasy owners agree and would prefer to see those efforts saved for games that matter. We'll keep you posted on his efforts to get paid.
Titans, Rams brawl at practiceWednesday 8/6, 7:26 PM CT
Anger got the upper hand today as the Titans and Rams engaged in a brawl during a joint team practice, according to the Associated Press. St. Louis receiver Reche Caldwell got it started by grabbing Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan in a bear hug, taking him to the ground. The fight escalated a few moments later when, after being blocked to the ground on his rush, Titans defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch took a swing at Rams left tackle Adam Goldberg. The head coaches tried to calm things down. But on the next play, Titans end Sean Conover tangled with St. Louis tackle Mark LeVoir, with Vanden Bosch rushing in to help, without his helmet.

Our View: The Rams are trying to build off a 3-13 season by working against Tennessee, a team that went 10-6 in the AFC South and made the playoffs in 2007. The Titans had the NFL's fifth-stingiest defense in yards allowed in 2007, so they offer a good early test for a Rams offense that was 24th a year ago, averaging 297.5 yards and without contract holdout Steven Jackson. The Titans are pushing themselves defensively to improve as well, and All Pro tackle Albert Haynesworth, who stayed out of the frays, said it's easy for something to happen with Tennessee's aggressive style.
Bears QB battle may last into seasonWednesday 8/6, 7:14 PM CT
With the first game of the Bears' preseason looming (Thursday vs Kansas City), reports have focused the discussion on the continuing quarterback battle between Kyle Orton and Rex Grossman . When asked about when he hopes to have a decision, coach Love Smith replied, "In a perfect world, before the regular season starts," according to SLAM Sports.

Our View: Orton has been named the starter for this first preseason battle, but reports out of Chicago, as indicated by that quote from Smith, suggest neither is emerging as the favorite for the job. Fans are siding with Orton, having booed Grossman mercilessly during practice earlier in the week for throwing a pass away inside of the 20-yard line. It is starting to sound like Smith is all but certain that this will not be settled before the season begins, thus the already-low fantasy value of both passers could be further hampered by sharing snaps.
Reed to miss preseason opener for BillsWednesday 8/6, 7:00 PM CT
Having missed recent practices, Buffalo receiver Josh Reed is expected to miss the team's first preseason game at Washington on Saturday with minor back pain, according to SLAM Sports.

Our View: Reed is not believed to be harboring a major injury and coaches express only slight concern in discussing his progress in practice. Unfortunately for Reed, it sounds like his major competition for a starting job, rookie James Hardy, is expected to return from a minor hamstring injury and will be playing with the first-team offense in his absence. That's an opportunity for Hardy to show and prove, and that could be trouble for Reed.
Whitner out for Bills preseason openerWednesday 8/6, 6:56 PM CT
The Buffalo Bills report safety Donte Whitner will miss the team's first preseason game at Washington on Saturday as he continues to nurse a sore left ankle, according to SLAM Sports.

Our View: Whitner described his injury as minor, adding that he would be able to play if this were a regular-season game. Out since jamming his ankle in practice Saturday, Whitner said all test results show no damage.
Marshall ready to do things rightWednesday 8/6, 6:47 PM CT
While embattled Denver receiver Brandon Marshall plans to appeal the three-game suspension recently handed down by the NFL due to legal misconduct during the offseason, he tells reporters he understands the errors of his way and he intends to get back on track, according to ProFootballTalk.com. “I’m just going to do everything I’m supposed to do, whether it’s off the field or on the field, and get past this,” Marshall said today in his first public comments since his suspension was announced.

Our View: Fantasy owners can hope he holds true. He's saying all the right things, suggesting it is time to change and move forward with emphasis on the job at hand. The receiving picture in Denver is a mess and Marshall may be the only solid deep threat the team possesses. Missing him in the first three games (possibly only two if he follows a league request to seek therapy) will be a significant concern.
Mangini has yet to announce preseason QB starterWednesday 8/6, 6:37 PM CT
Updating an earlier report, the Jets have released their first training camp depth chart with Kellen Clemens listed as the top quarterback, and while that might suggest it would be Clemens getting the start in the Jets' first preseason game (tomorrow versus the Browns), reports out of New York indicate coach Eric Mangini has yet to finalize that decision, according to ProFootballTalk.com.

Our View: We have to assume Mangini is simply being secretive with the decision. There is no reason why he would not have made the choice between Clemens and veteran Chad Pennington for the role of starter in this first preseason test, but as of this moment, he is not sharing that information with others. We'll keep you posted if/when that changes.
Favre confirms it will be Jets or BucsWednesday 8/6, 6:32 PM CT
As we continue to watch the Brett Favre situation, reports have come forth indicating Favre has confirmed that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Jets are the two teams attempting to trade for his services, according to the Green Bay Press Gazette. “It’s in everyone’s best interest to do it quicker than later,” Favre. “I won’t say we’re running out of time, but I need to get into a camp somewhere.”

Our View: Favre, his wife, Deanna, and his agent, Bus Cook, flew back into Pine Belt Regional Airport this afternoon after meeting for the past three days with officials from the Green Bay Packers, for whom Favre has quarterbacked the last 16 seasons. Upon arrival, he spoke with reporters and confirmed those reports when asked. He hopes to see the deal done soon ane we expect the Packers are pushing to make that a reality. As always, we will keep you posted.
Rice could push McGahee out of town?Wednesday 8/6, 5:42 PM CT
The Baltimore Sun's Mike Preston has stated that Ray Rice has shown so much potential in training camp that he may eventually push Willis McGahee out of town.

Our View: Don't get too excited about this. Rice won't be pushing McGahee for the starting job anytime soon. Rice is worth a late-round pick in standard leagues and should be bumped up in keeper formats, but don't go too ga-ga over him.
Jenkins running with the first teamWednesday 8/6, 5:08 PM CT
Michael Jenkins is running with the first team offense in training camp, according to the Falcons' official site.

Our View: It had been thought that Laurent Robinson was the front-runner to start opposite Roddy White. That still could be the case, but Robinson has dealt with a back injury recently.
Milner dealing with multiple injuriesWednesday 8/6, 5:04 PM CT
Martrez Milner is nursing toe, ankle and knee injuries and there is no timetable for his return, according to the Gainesville Times. "He's got a toe and a knee and an ankle (injury), all on the same leg," coach Mike Smith said. "I'm encouraged by him being out of the boot so early, but it's going it’s going to take some time, and it's a matter of when he can really put some weight on that (leg)."

Our View: Milner has been used as a motion-oriented H-back and is easily the most athletically gifted tight end of the Falcons roster. Ben Hartsock is likely to start, but he's viewed primarily as a blocker.
Thomas not in tip top shapeWednesday 8/6, 4:58 PM CT
Redskins coach Jim Zorn told the Washington Post that Devin Thomas failed a conditioning test at the beginning of training camp and that is the root of his hamstring problems. Thomas will miss several more weeks of the preseason and will be quite far behind. "I've had this happen in other places I've coached," Zorn said, "and it's very difficult [to get caught up]."

Our View: Fellow rookie Malcolm Kelly also failed the test, which has not made Zorn happy. Thomas has loads of potential, but we wouldn't suggest you taking him outside of keeper leagues.
Kelly failed conditioning testWednesday 8/6, 4:55 PM CT
Coach Jim Zorn said that Malcolm Kelly failed the Redskins' conditioning test at the start of training camp and hinted that the rookie's poor physical condition could be the cause of his knee problem, according to the Washington Post. "If you can't pass that physical test that we give," Zorn said, "then something's not right." Zorn also added that the previous diagnosis that Kelly would miss only two weeks after getting his knee scoped was "ambitious."

Our View: This isn't exactly the way to endear yourself to your new team. Fellow rookie Devin Thomas failed the conditioning test, as well, so Kelly isn't the only one not in tip top shape. Don't expect much, if any, contribution from Kelly at the beginning of the regular season.
Not much expected from SweedWednesday 8/6, 4:47 PM CT
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ed Bouchette said in a recent chat that he doesn't expect rookie wideout Limas Sweed to catch more than 25 passes this season.

Our View: For the moment, Sweed is listed at No. 4 on the depth chart behind Hines Ward, Santonio Holmes and Nate Washington. He should have a bright future, but you shouldn't draft him outside of keeper leagues.
Stewart still feeling pain in toeWednesday 8/6, 4:43 PM CT
Jonathan Stewart continues to practice on a limited basis, but he admits that he still has some discomfort in his surgically repaired right big toe, according to the Charlotte Observer.

Our View: Stewart was supposed to be ready to practice fully by this point. He is unlikely to play in the preseason opener, though coach John Fox said it would be a game-time decision.
Baker listed atop depth chartWednesday 8/6, 4:31 PM CT
Chris Baker is listed as the starting tight end on the Jets depth chart despite just recently being activated from the PUP list, according to the NY Daily News.

Our View: Bubba Franks is likely to start the team's first preseason game while Baker shakes the rust off. Rookie Dustin Keller could eventually challenge Baker for the starting spot.
Clemens ahead of Pennington on depth chartWednesday 8/6, 4:26 PM CT
The Jets have released their first depth chart, and Kellen Clemens is listed ahead of veteran Chad Pennington at quarterback, according to the NY Daily News. That means it's likely Clemens will start against the Browns in the preseason opener, but Pennington is slated to work with the starters in today's practice.

Our View: It had been thought that Pennington was holding off Clemens thus far, but it appears, at least at the moment, that the youngster has the edge. Of course, everything will be thrown out the window if the Jets trade for Brett Favre.
Pittman moves back to tailbackWednesday 8/6, 4:22 PM CT
Michael Pittman has been moved back to his natural position of tailback with the injury to Ryan Torain, according to the Denver Post. Pittman had been playing fullback.

Our View: Pittman won't challenge Selvin Young or even Andre Hall on the depth chart. In fact, he might be behind undrafted rookie Anthony Alridge, as well.
Favre will be either a Buc or a JetWednesday 8/6, 4:15 PM CT
It appears that Brett Favre will be traded soon, and he is expected to land with either the Bucs or the Jets, according to the Clarion-Ledger. "Brett's ready to go play," said Bus Cook, Favre's agent. "It looks like it's going to be New York or Tampa Bay. We're waiting to find out and we could learn in the next hour or so."

Our View: Reports indicate that Favre would rather play in Tampa Bay, but that New York is offering more in return for the future Hall of Famer. We'll continue to closely track this ongoing saga.
Addai fully practicing again Wednesday 8/6, 3:13 PM CT
Joseph Addai, who sustained a head injury in Sunday's exhibition game against Washington, participated in full-contact drills in practice Wednesday, according to the Indianapolis Star.

Our View: He looked fine in practice with no issues, and his injury is not a concern. He also lined up at receiver, which shows how much the Colts like his pass-catching ability. He shall remain ranked high as a top-5 fantasy running back.
Mallard placed on IR Wednesday 8/6, 3:08 PM CT
Wesly Mallard has been placed on the IR due to a hamstring injury, according to the Seattle Times.

Our View: Mallard was not going to see action in the Seahawks' secondary, and his only chance to make the team and contribute was on special teams.
Rodgers has strong day of practiceWednesday 8/6, 2:24 PM CT
Aaron Rodgers threw an interception to Nick Collins Wednesday, but overall he had his best day of camp so far, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. He looked calm and confident in 11-on-11 drills, especially through the no huddle portion.

Our View: Rodgers has held up well during the whole Brett Favre situation, and should be less of a distraction as Favre is seemingly close to being shipped out of Green Bay.
Johnson sits out Wednesday 8/6, 2:16 PM CT
Bryant Johnson sat out Wednesday to nurse his hamstring ailment, according to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.

Our View: The injury is not believed to be serious, and the team considers him day-to-day.
Roman returns to practice Wednesday 8/6, 2:12 PM CT
Mark Roman has returned to practice, according to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. He participated in individual drills after being out since July 28.

Our View: He should hold his spot as the 49ers' starting free safety. He is in competition with Dashon Goldston for the job. Neither player should be fantasy worthy.
Hardy returns to practice Wednesday 8/6, 1:58 PM CT
James Hardy has returned to practice after missing some time with a hamstring strain, according to Bills.com.

Our View: Hardy still has time to beat out Josh Reed for the starting gig at receiver opposite speed demon Lee Evans. Hardy should see the field plenty either way, and could hold solid value at the bottom of your depth chart in traditional leagues this season.
Brown's knee responding well Wednesday 8/6, 1:42 PM CT
Ronnie Brown has been practicing in full-contact drills without limitations through the first two weeks of training camp, and noted Tuesday that his knee and body are responding well, according to the Miami Herald. He said, "It was real big over this past week and a half to come in and sort of get over the mental aspect of physical contact. But when I'm in there, I do have to keep everything in perspective and realize that this is a preseason game. We have a long season, at least 16 games. But at the same time, you have to get work in."

Our View: His comments refer to Saturday's preseason game against Tampa Bay. The team will be cautious with him, but also realize the importance of him playing in the preseason.
Sims won't play ThursdayWednesday 8/6, 1:34 PM CT
Ernie Sims has returned to practice this week after missing time due to a bone bruise in his right knee, but is not expected to play in Thursday's exhibition game against the Giants, according to MLive.com.

Our View: Sims should be fine for Week 1, and is sitting out Thursday as a precaution. The Lions' starters are only expected to work around 10 plays.
Torain out at least 6-8 weeks Wednesday 8/6, 1:28 PM CT
Ryan Torain is expected to miss a minimum of 6-8 weeks after breaking his elbow in a 9-on-7 drill Wednesday, according to the Rocky Mountain News.

Our View: Andre Hall should now serve as Selvin Young's primary backup. Torain obviously should not be drafted in non-keeper leagues this season.
Ndukwe injury update Wednesday 8/6, 1:20 PM CT
Chinedum Ndukwe gave the Bengals a scare when he was carted off the field during practice, but his knee injury is not serious and he is expected to be fine, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View: Ndukwe could not afford to miss much practice time as he is in a battle with veteran Dexter Jackson for the starting gig at strong safety.
Fitzsimmons back at TE Wednesday 8/6, 1:06 PM CT
Casey FitzSimmons is back at tight end after working as a fullback under Mike Martz, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Our View: He was uncomfortable at fullback, and is pleased to be back at tight end, his natural position. He will compete with Dan Campbell and Michael Gaines for playing time this season.
Smith makes prediction Wednesday 8/6, 12:58 PM CT
Rookie Kevin Smith feels so good during training camp that he predicts the Lions to win their first playoff game since 1957, according to the Detroit News. Smith also said he wants to win a Super Bowl within his first three campaigns, and believes the Lions are a sleeping giant. He will start by showing what he can do in his first exhibition game on Thursday (against the Giants), and he said, "I really want to show my teammates and coaches that I know what I am doing out there. I got a lot of people who want to see what I am doing. But overall I want to help the team and go out there and do the job I got to do."

Our View: He is doing a good job of fitting in and establishing himself as a "team guy" with the Lions, and has a bright future ahead of him in Detroit. If you draft Tatum Bell this season, be sure to "handcuff" Smith.
Buckhalter working as number twoWednesday 8/6, 12:28 PM CT
Correll Buckhalter is listed as Brian Westbrook's primary backup at running back on the Eagles' latest depth chart, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

Our View: That leaves Lorenzo Booker and Tony Hunt fighting for the number three spot. Buckhalter ran well in 2007, as he averaged 5.0 yards over 62 carries.
Jackson will not play SaturdayWednesday 8/6, 12:23 PM CT
Vincent Jackson will not play Saturday against the Cowboys due to his hamstring ailment, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our View: He has missed seven straight practices, and should be drafted with caution as hamstring injuries can be problematic over the long haul of a season.
Marshall intends to appeal suspensionWednesday 8/6, 12:17 PM CT
Brandon Marshall intends to appeal his three-game suspension from the league, according to NFL.com.

Our View: Marshall's value will fall even if he manages to get his suspension uplifted (which is unlikely). His character issues make him a risky fantasy prospect.
Cowboys pleased with Bennett Wednesday 8/6, 12:10 PM CT
Martellus Bennett has impressed the Cowboys' coaching staff, namely in the area of blocking, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Our View: If Bennett is effective as a blocker, he would see the field more, and would allow Jason Witten to line up on the outside as a receiver at times.
Neal tries out for Buccaneers Wednesday 8/6, 12:03 PM CT
Lorenzo Neal tried out for the Buccaneers, according to the PewterReport.com.

Our View: The 37-year-old fullback played for San Diego the last five seasons and previously played for the Buccaneers in 1998. Neal would be added as insurance for B.J. Askew, who is dealing with an ankle injury.
Feely dealing with injuryWednesday 8/6, 11:41 AM CT
Kicker Jay Feely missed a second straight day of practice on Wednesday due to an undisclosed injury, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports. He was seen riding a stationary bike.

Our View: Whatever it is, Feely's injury sounds minor. Rookie Dan Carpenter has a chance to take advantage in the reportedly open competition.
Portis expected to rest SaturdayWednesday 8/6, 11:36 AM CT
Clinton Portis is unlikely to suit up for Saturday's preseason tilt against the Bills, the Washington Post notes. The running back also sat out the Hall of Fame game versus the Colts.

Our View: The Redskins have no reason to risk their top offensive asset until either their fourth or fifth preseason game. We're not worried about his fantasy value.
Roethlisberger to play FridayWednesday 8/6, 11:33 AM CT
Ben Roethlisberger will start and likely play one series in Friday's preseason opener, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. The quarterback has been limited in practice due to a sore groin.

Our View: We didn't think the groin injury was anything to worry about, and the Steelers wouldn't risk Big Ben if they were at all concerned.
Torain carted off field Wednesday 8/6, 11:05 AM CT
Ryan Torain has been carted off the field Wednesday after being shaken up during a 9-on-7 drill, according to the Rocky Mountain News. Torain stayed down after being hit by linebackers Nate Webster and Jamie Winborn. As team doctors were leading him off the field, Torain collapsed to the grass behind the goal posts and stayed down for several minutes before sitting up and drinking water.

Our View: The severity and specifics of his injury are yet to be determined.
Charles impressing with speed Wednesday 8/6, 10:41 AM CT
Jamaal Charles has been impressing the Chiefs' coaching staff with his speed, according to the KC Star. Both Herman Edwards and quarterback Brodie Croyle said that Charles is the fastest player they had seen. Charles beat a cornerback and a safety to the sideline for a big gain on a toss play Tuesday.

Our View: Charles is faring well so far in his bid to serve as Larry Johnson's primary backup. He is battling second-year pro Kolby Smith for the job. Smith was unable to compete Tuesday due to a groin ailment.
Harris suffers groin injury Wednesday 8/6, 10:22 AM CT
The Panthers disclosed that Chris Harris was carted off the field Monday due to a groin injury, according to the Charlotte Observer. Harris said, "It scared me a little bit. I didn't know exactly what was going on. But it's nothing to worry about. I'll be back out there sooner than later."

Our View: The team will be cautious with him to insure he is ready for the Week 1 opener against the Chargers. Fantasy owners should not drop him out of the top-15 on their IDP draft boards at the defensive back position.
Ndukwe carted off field Wednesday 8/6, 10:16 AM CT
Chinedum Ndukwe has been carted off the field Wednesday with an apparent knee injury, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View: We will keep you posted when the severity of the ailment is disclosed. Ndukwe ranked as a solid IDP sleeper for 2008.
Toefield lost in shuffle Wednesday 8/6, 9:15 AM CT
LaBrandon Toefield has been in and out of practice due to ailments, and is not doing anything to prove he deserves a roster spot with the Panthers, according to the Rock Hill Herald.

Our View: DeAngelo Williams and top rookie Jon Stewart are locks to make the Panthers, and Nick Goings is also likely safe, meaning Toefield will be fighting for the final roster spot at the position.
Peppers excelling Wednesday 8/6, 9:09 AM CT
The Rock Hill Herald reports that Julius Peppers is having an incredible training camp, and looking like an elite defensive end again. During a three-snap stretch in practice, he stopped Muhammad for what would have been at least a 10-yard loss on an attempted reverse, then after a play, he bull-rushed left tackle Jordan Gross back into Jake Delhomme for what would have been a sack, but when the play continued, he faded back, and went high in the air to bat down Delhomme's pass one-handed, before heading to the sidelines laughing.

Our View: Peppers is worthy of drafting as a number one defensive lineman in IDP leagues, as he looks to bounce back from a disappointing 2007 campaign.
Jones close to coming off PUP list Wednesday 8/6, 9:00 AM CT
The Chicago Tribune indicates that Kevin Jones is close to coming off the preseason PUP list.

Our View: He is dressing in full pads with a brace on his right knee. He is also running close to full speed on the sidelines, and we will continue to monitor his progress through the preseason.
Gore improves physique Wednesday 8/6, 8:34 AM CT
Frank Gore has trimmed 10 pounds off his frame in a bid to get into better shape, according to the SF Chronicle. He currently weighs 214 pounds, and Marshall Faulk (who had great success in Mike Martz's offense) advised him to get down to 212. He also told Gore to run at practice every day, which he is doing.

Our View: Gore may not generate fantasy MVP-like numbers, as Faulk did while under Martz, but he could rank in the top-5.
Andrews plans to join Eagles soonWednesday 8/6, 8:10 AM CT
Shawn Andrews, who is suffering from depression, said he plans to join the Eagles at some point this week, according to the PhillyBurbs.com. Andrews said, "I definitely am doing a lot better than where I was even a week or two ago, because I was at the end of the road I felt like. I felt like I needed to talk to someone before things got out of hand."

Our View: If Pro Bowler Andrews can get his illness under control, he will resume his role as the starting right guard for the Eagles. If not, the offensive line will be downgraded significantly at the position with Max Jean-Giles the next in line to replace him.
Mendenhall improves on goal-line Wednesday 8/6, 8:02 AM CT
Rashard Mendenhall, who failed to score on three tries in the goal-line drill Sunday, made it in for a score on his second try Tuesday night, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Coach Mike Tomlin said, "I thought he was better. He was downhill. He went in standing up one time."

Our View: The rookie is working harder, and should keep himself in the running for goal-line carries in the regular season.
Bell won't likely face Denver Wednesday 8/6, 7:40 AM CT
Mike Bell won't likely face the Broncos, his former team, in preseason action on Saturday, due to his hamstring injury, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View: Bell cannot afford to miss too much time in training camp, as the Texans' backfield is crowded and there are several rushers ahead of him on the depth chart more worthy of making the final roster.
Favre could join Tampa Bay soon?Wednesday 8/6, 7:28 AM CT
The Tampa Tribune indicates that Brett Favre could be dealt to the Buccaneers within the next 24 hours. Brian Griese could be sent to Green Bay to back up Aaron Rodgers as part of the deal.

Our View: Favre is willing to leave the Packers for the Buccaneers, and would be a significant upgrade over current starter Jeff Garcia.
Pace progressing Wednesday 8/6, 7:22 AM CT
Orlando Pace, who is recovering from shoulder surgery, took more reps with the first team offense Tuesday than any day previously, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Coach Scott Linehan said, "We're going to start pushing that. He's going to get some good work in Tennessee too. As we go through it, he's going to be working with the first unit for the most part."

Our View: Barring any setbacks, Pace looks to be on target to start in Week 1 against the Eagles.
Favre won't play for PackersWednesday 8/6, 12:44 AM CT
Head coach Mike McCarthy made it clear during his media session on Tuesday that Brett Favre will "never appear in a Packers uniform again," writes Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com. The Packers will either trade or release the veteran quarterback.

Our View: Wasn't it just a two days ago that Favre was set to be in an open competition with Aaron Rodgers? This is the most definitive report to date that says Favre won't be wearing a Packers uniform in 2008. Of course, this won't end the media coverage about where he will end up.
