Rookie Johnson posts 66-yard TD runSaturday 8/9, 11:36 PM CT
Rookie tailback Chris Johnson wasted little time introducing himself to the NFL, taking an early handoff 66 yards right up the gut for a highlight-reel touchdown in the Titans' preseason opener against St. Louis, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Our View: Johnson has been one of the hot fantasy gambles of the early draft season and now fans are going to be giving him that much more attention. If he keeps it up, he'll be working as the primary back and LenDale White could become the change-of-pace option. Stay tuned.
Green injured in preseason opener (again)Saturday 8/9, 10:09 PM CT
Well that didn't take long. Houston rusher Ahman Green was injured on his first carry of his first preseason game of 2008, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View: On the Texans' first play of tonight's preseason opener against Denver, Green took a short pass from Matt Schaub for five yards, then limped off the field with a groin injury. We have no word on the severity of the injury, but if you remember last season (when Green was hurt in the preseason and rarely contributed for the remainder of the year), it's not good. We'll keep you posted.
Steelers sign Culpepper and LeftwichSaturday 8/9, 10:04 PM CT
In response to the broken collarbone suffered by backup passer Charlie Batch, the Pittsburgh Steelers have signed both Byron Leftwich and Daunte Culpepper , according to the Sporting News.

Our View: Batch broke a collarbone in Friday's preseason opener, leaving the Steelers without a veteran behind starter Ben Roethlisberger. With Dennis Dixon and Mike Potts on the depth chart, Steelers officials decided to try the two experienced quarterbacks in what could be an open audition for backup. Batch figures to miss at least a month while his collarbone mends. That means Leftwich and/or Culpepper are likely to be with the Steelers once the season starter. Their first regular-season game is Sept. 7 against the Houston Texans. They have three exhibitions left, including Thursday at Buffalo.
Abraham suffers ankle injurySaturday 8/9, 8:35 PM CT
Atlanta Falcons defensive end John Abraham sustained a right ankle injury in Saturday's preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars and will not return, according to the Miami Herald.

Our View: Abraham, who was acquired in a three-way trade with the Denver Broncos and New York Jets in March of 2006, started every game for the Falcons last season, recording 10 sacks and 32 tackles. We will update his condition as news becomes available.
Green carried off on stretcherSaturday 8/9, 8:18 PM CT
Denver Broncos linebacker Louis Green left the field on a stretcher with a neck injury and a concussion in the 1st quarter of Saturday's preseason game against Houston, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: The 6-foot-3, 237-pound Green collided with teammate D.J. Williams as the two converged to tackle Texans tight end Owen Daniels, who caught a short pass. Green lay motionless for several minutes as medical staff rushed to check on him. Green was strapped to the stretcher and was moving his fingers and hands as he was rolled off the field. The Texans said Green was taken to a hospital for further evaluation.
Grant not likely to play in preseason openerSaturday 8/9, 8:05 PM CT
Green Bay rusher Ryan Grant's availability for Monday night's exhibition opener against the Cincinnati Bengals remains in doubt, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Grant has been on the sidelines for two straight days with a hamstring injury that coach Mike McCarthy characterized as slight. Grant stayed in Green Bay throughout the team's offseason workout program, meetings and practices even though he didn't participate in them. He hasn't said much about his latest setback. He appeared Saturday for a moment in the locker room with the media and said he'd come right back. He never returned, opting to go in for treatment on his ailing muscle instead. We'll keep you posted as news comes forth.
Beck's days are numbersSaturday 8/9, 7:35 PM CT
Updating an earlier report in which we cited unnamed sources with the Miami Dolphins claiming the leash for young quarterback John Beck is getting shorter by the day, we have now learned the Fins are in fact giving Beck a short timeframe to show and prove. To be more specific, he is granted two weeks, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View: PFW reports their team insider has been told that Beck will be granted two more weeks to practice and play in preseason action. If he fails to showcase the progress coach Tony Sparano and leader Bill Parcells wish to see, he will be traded or granted his release. The Fins have no desire to carry four quarterbacks through the season and view Josh McCown as a veteran arm to fill the backup duties behind Chad Pennington. Chad Henne has shown promise and is easily coached, thus the desire to mentor him for the future is likely to end Beck's short and uninspired tenure in Miami.
Goff out indefinately with broken vertebraSaturday 8/9, 7:27 PM CT
Giants rookie linebacker Jonathan Goff is out indefinitely after fracturing part of a vertebra in his lower back in the second quarter of the preseason opener against the Detroit Lions on Thursday night, according to SLAM Sports.

Our View: The team has not decided whether to place the 5th-round draft pick from Vanderbilt on injured reserve or give him more time to recover. If he is placed on injured reserve, he cannot play or practice with the team.
Pennington contract details come forthSaturday 8/9, 7:22 PM CT
To cover our bases, we have learned the terms of the new contract signed by Chad Pennington , joining the Miami Dolphis upon his dismissal from the New York Jets. The two-year agreement is worth $11.5 million, as quoted by ProFootballTalk.com based on a report from the Associated Press.

Our View: However, as Talk notes, the true details of the agreement are not yet known by the public. It seems likely the first year of the deal is relatively light on salary while the second year will include a substantial roster bonus due in March, thus forcing Miami to decide whether to keep (and pay) Pennington for 2009, or whether to allow him to hit the market.
Favre still uncertain in decisions???Saturday 8/9, 7:17 PM CT
The more he talks, the more we wonder. Today the New York media continued to send a barrage of questions towards newly-acquired quarterback Brett Favre concerning his decision to leave Green Bay and join the Jets, and his resulting comments seem to carry a certain tinge of uncertainty, according to ProFootballTalk.com. Asked about the overall emotion of the move, Favre responded, “I hope at the end of the season, I really do, that I feel like I made the right decision. I hope the Jets fans and the people throughout the NFL world feel like I made the right decision. At this point, I think it was the right decision.”

Our View: Uncertain or not, the move is made and it would be best to leave the trepidation on the table and progress forward. It may be that Favre never finds the comfort he desires in the current situation and the way it unfolded, but we seriously doubt it should be a major concern for fantasy owners. Once he hits the field and bodies start flying, the competition and love of the game will take over.
NFL teams watching Simms tonightSaturday 8/9, 6:02 PM CT
As the Bucs prepare for their preseason opener tonight against Miami, the thought around the league is that several teams will be watching with hopes of seeing shimmers of hope from quarterback Chris Simms , according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View: Negotiations on a trade involving Simms could heat up in the next few days if the disgruntled outcast has a good showing in the squad’s preseason opener this evening. Simms wants out of Tampa, but the Bucs have not caved in to his demands yet and are taking a good look at him in practice to get a better sense of what he can offer after not having played in a regular-season game since early in the 2006 season. However, if he shines tonight, several teams could come forth with tempting offers that must be considered.
Wilford labeled as major disappointment in MiamiSaturday 8/9, 5:55 PM CT
While there are some who continue to believe there is competition still to be waged, reports out of Miami indicate Ernest Wilford has served as the most disappointing target in training camp thus far and, as a result, has been indefinitely demoted to the second team, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View: It appears Derek Hagan has all but secured the starting job over Wilford who appears to be disinterested and frustrated with the move to Miami. If he fails to improve, it would be easy to suggest that he may not even enter the season on the Miami roster. We'll keep you posted on this young receiver that once looked to be a sleeper on the rise in Jacksonville but now sits as a player on the verge of release in Miami.
Burgess providing hope in OaklandSaturday 8/9, 5:51 PM CT
Reports from those watching the work of the Raiders' defense indicate defensive end Derrick Burgess is in a zone and the team is seeking to harness his enthusiasm for pain by shifting him all over the field in training camp, from left end to right end, to try to get him on a side away from the tight end, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View: The Raiders have also shown a 3-4 look at times, and Burgess has served as a stand-up linebacker. Burgess has the ability to rush the passer from that spot or drop back into coverage, and sources say he looks faster than last year while he’s on the move.
Harrison, Brackett cleared to playSaturday 8/9, 5:47 PM CT
The Colts report both receiver Marvin Harrison (knee) and linebacker Gary Brackett (groin) were given medical clearance to play in Saturday’s preseason game at Carolina, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View: It seems unlikely either will play as it would be wise to ease them back and practice caution in dealing with their continued return to health. We expect they may take part in the Colts' second preseason game to be played in a week, but we doubt they hit the field in the opener.
Lions PK Hanson struggling with thigh strainSaturday 8/9, 5:42 PM CT
Lions kicker Jason Hanson will be held out of practice this week with a "mild strained thigh" and is expected to miss the August 17th exhibition game against the Bengals, said Dean Kleinschmidt, the Lions coordinator of athletic medicine, according to the Detroit News.

Our View: Hanson injured his "drive leg" while converting a 50-yard field goal in Thursday's 13-10 victory over the Giants. He did kick the ball off after the score before leaving the game. It's possible Hanson could miss up to two weeks because the injury involves a quad muscle, Kleinschmidt said. To take Hanson's place on the roster while the veteran is recuperating, the team signed former Michigan State kicker Dave Rayner.
CB Wilson done for the year in DetroitSaturday 8/9, 5:39 PM CT
Detroit Lions cornerback Stanley Wilson will miss the rest of the season with a torn Achilles' tendon, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: The four-year veteran was injured in Thursday night's preseason opener against the New York Giants, a 13-10 Detroit victory. A torn Achilles' tendon typically requires up to a year of rehabilitation after surgery.
McCown out of preseason operner as Beck attempts to keep jobSaturday 8/9, 4:55 PM CT
It appears the cloudy quaterback scenario in Miami may be clearing, or at least the clues left thus far suggest it is. The Fins have announced Josh McCown , listed as the team's starting quarterback in their early depth chart release, will not appear in the team's first preseason game of the season, according to the Miami Herald. Reports from the Herald indicate coach Tony Sparano has informed John Beck that he will be playing the first and third quarters while rookie Chad Henne will man the second and fourth.

Our View: With Chad Pennington joining this mix and clearly sitting as the favorite to start in the regular season, the Fins need to determine which quarterbacks will stay and which will be moved elsewhere. This could be an opportunity for both Beck and Henne to show they deserve a shot, but one might also wonder if the desire to keep McCown healthy for a potential trade is serving as motivation. Regardless, the Dolphins will learn from the game and will be making decisions based on those performances. Unnamed sources with the team are quoted in the story, indicating Beck is already viewed as the odd man out. Thus the Fins are going to give him one more shot to strut, and if they don't like what they see, he will be moved. Stay tuned.
Jackson impresses in preseason openerSaturday 8/9, 4:44 PM CT
The Minnesota Vikings continue to express their pleasure with young starting quarterback Tarvaris Jackson , according to the Associated Press. The Vikes opened with 12 consecutive pass plays in their first preseason game of the season, putting Jackson and his receivers to the test with hopes of boosting their confidence and setting a tone for the rest of the preseason. Jackson completed 8-of-11 passes for 118 yards and one touchdown, with a long pass of 28 yards. The Vikings had five turnovers, but none by their starting quarterback

Our View: This is great news for fantasy owners who have gambled on Jackson a sleeper at the position, though expectations should remain tempered. After all, this is the preseason, but it appears the team has every desire to show support for Jackson following the drama of the Brett Favre scenario and the constant rumors of a move to Minnesota that followed. If Jackson can be this productive in 2008, the Vikings could surprise in a weak NFC North.
Pats sign ShoateSaturday 8/9, 4:38 PM CT
The New England Patriots have signed cornerback Jeff Shoate , formerly with the Denver Broncos, in response to losing safety Tank Williams, placed on the the team's injured reserve list today, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Denver selected Shoate in the fifth round of the 2004 NFL Draft and released him Dec. 4, 2007. He was signed to the Baltimore Ravens practice squad eight days later and he ultimately joined the New York Giants practice squad during last season's playoffs.
Williams season is overSaturday 8/9, 3:43 PM CT
The season is over for Patriots safety Tank Williams, who has been placed on injured reserve after suffering a knee injury in their preseason game, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View: Williams was fighting for playing time, but he was potentially a quality backup.
Schobel signed by JagsSaturday 8/9, 3:40 PM CT
The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed defensive end Bo Schobel, according to Jaguars.com.

Our View: Schobel will fight for a spot on the roster, and should only provide depth for the Jaguars.
Browns terminate Baxter's contractSaturday 8/9, 3:18 PM CT
The Cleveland Browns have terminated the contract of defensive back Gary Baxter, days after he underwent knee surgery, according to ClevelandBrowns.com.

Our View: Baxter was trying to come back after tearing the patella tendon in both knees on one play in 2006. He has not played since, and is still having problems with his knees.
Kerney will practice soonSaturday 8/9, 2:10 PM CT
Patrick Kerney has nearly recovered from a strained calf and he should return to practice sometime next week, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View: Kerney was a monster with 60 tackles, 14.5 sacks and five forced fumbles a year ago. He is clearly someone to target in IDP leagues.
Lelie in danger of being cut?Saturday 8/9, 2:07 PM CT
After suffering from a calf injury and being outperformed by the likes of Josh Morgan, there is a chance that unless he steps it up, wide receiver Ashley Lelie could get cut by the 49ers, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View: Lelie is a perennial under-performer who has teased fantasy owners before. Consider it a lesson learned and stay away from him during drafts.
Warner still without new contractSaturday 8/9, 2:04 PM CT
Kurt Warner and the Arizona Cardinals have been unable to come to an agreement on a contract extension, and talks have bogged down, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View: Warner and the Cardinals can't decide on his value because it is unknown if he will be the starter or not. Though the chances are that Matt Leinart will be the guy, Warner has conceded nothing, and is taking that approach in his contract talks.
Favre to start next preseason gameSaturday 8/9, 1:57 PM CT
Brett Favre will make his Jets debut as the starting quarterback next Saturday when the team takes on Washington, according to the AP.

Our View: Favre better learn the system quickly. He has missed a lot of camp, obviously, and his first practice with the team was today in front of around 7,000 people.
Smith practices poorlySaturday 8/9, 1:48 PM CT
Ravens quarterback Troy Smith had a poor practice on Saturday, getting intercepted three times on his first eight passes, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View: Smith was bad, but the paper also reported that Joe Flacco and Kyle Boller struggled as well. None of these players should be anywhere close to fantasy rosters at the moment.
Royal to make startSaturday 8/9, 1:32 PM CT
Eddie Royal was penciled into the Broncos starting lineup at wide receiver for the team's first game against the Texans tonight, according to the Denver Post. "He's practiced at a high level and done all the things you need to do to play with the first team," Denver coach Mike Shanahan said.

Our View: If there is a candidate to be the next Dwayne Bowe or Marques Colston, it seems like it is Royal. It would not be a bad idea at all to snare him in very late rounds of fantasy drafts. Of course, it's entirely possible he could perform like so many other rookie WR's, but indications are that he will be involved in Denver's offense.
Reed practicesSaturday 8/9, 1:21 PM CT
Ravens safety Ed Reed practiced for the first time this preseason, though he wore the symbolic red jersey that prevented him from contact, reports BaltimoreRavens.com.

Our View: Reed had been nursing a sore shoulder, but he should be cleared to go full bore in a week or so. He is one of the premier defenders in the game, and is one of many parts that makes the Ravens defensive unit valuable in fantasy play.
Tomlinson will not playSaturday 8/9, 1:18 PM CT
LaDainian Tomlinson will not play in tonight's preseason contest against the Cowboys, according to ESPN.com.

Our View: There's nothing wrong with LT, he's just resting, which is perfectly fine with fantasy owners across the nation.
Askew wins settlementSaturday 8/9, 1:11 PM CT
Matthias Askew has won a settlement that will pay him $500,000, according to the AP. Askew sued the city of Cincinnati after police used unnecessary force on him by using a stun gun when asked to move his parked car. He alleged that the arrest caused his release from the Bengals.

Our View: This incident happened in 2006. Askew is now playing for the Washington Redskins and has zero fantasy value.
Dvoracek returns to practiceSaturday 8/9, 12:50 PM CT
Dusty Dvoracek will practice with the Bears for the first time today, according to the Chicago Tribune. He had been suffering from a strained calf.

Our View: Dvoracek will battle for a starting spot at defensive tackle, and his fantasy value lies in the performance of the Bears defensive unit as a whole, which was surprisingly bad last season.
Jones cleared to practiceSaturday 8/9, 12:46 PM CT
Bears running back Kevin Jones has been given the go-ahead to start practicing with the team, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View: Jones will be in competition with a number of backs for carries, but in all likelihood, he will be a back-up to rookie Matt Forte. Still, he has fantasy potential and is worth taking a late round gamble on.
Gaither strugglingSaturday 8/9, 12:42 PM CT
Trying to replace future Hall of Fame left tackle Jonathan Ogden hasn't been easy for Ravens lineman Jared Gaither, according to the Baltimore Sun. He suffered an ankle injury early in camp, and it has been slow to heal. He also was late onto the practice field this morning, and the Ravens coaches were none too pleased.

Our View: Gaither is an enormous human being with solid potential, but he clearly has a few things to learn before he can help fantasy teams by blocking for Willis McGahee.
McKelvin will return kicksSaturday 8/9, 11:49 AM CT
Bills first-round selection Leodis McKelvin will get an opportunity to return both punts and kicks in tonight's preseason contest, according to BuffaloBills.com.

Our View: McKelvin was a dynamite returner in college, and though Buffalo has Roscoe Parrish, they need to see what McKelvin can give them.
Wyche out for seasonSaturday 8/9, 11:27 AM CT
Jaguars defensive end James Wyche has been lost for the season after tearing his Achilles tendon, according to the Florida Times-Union.

Our View: Wyche also missed last season with an injury. He was going to be depth at the defensive end position, so it should not affect fantasy teams.
Farwell could be gone for yearSaturday 8/9, 11:24 AM CT
Vikings linebacker Heath Farwell could be lost for the season after sustaining a knee injury during the team's preseason game against the Seahawks, according to ESPN.com.

Our View: Farwell was arguably the team's best special teams player, so his loss could impact fantasy teams who have the Minnesota defense/special teams unit.
Parker to get goal line carriesSaturday 8/9, 11:13 AM CT
Steelers running back Willie Parker is likely to get the team's carries at the goal line this season instead of rookie runner Rashard Mendenhall, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View: Fantasy owners weren't quite sure who was going to get those vital touches near the end zone, but this is great news for those who drafted Parker. It is equally frustrating news of Mendenhall owners, who were hoping to vulture a few goal line touchdowns.
Barnes will be starting left tackleSaturday 8/9, 10:55 AM CT
Khalif Barnes has secured the left tackle position for the Jacksonville Jaguars, successfully fending off Richard Collier, according to ESPN.com.

Our View: Barnes has had his troubles, specifically with a DUI and insulting the city of Jacksonville, but he has talent and will continue to block for the running back tandem of Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor.
McCown or Beck not long for DolphinsSaturday 8/9, 10:50 AM CT
With the signing of quarterback Chad Pennington to a two-year contract, the tenures of Josh McCown and John Beck in Miami are shaky, according to ESPN.com. The Dolphins will not carry four quarterbacks on their roster, and Chad Henne is safe, leaving McCown or Beck as the choice.

Our View: Beck isn't likely to be released, but a trade is certainly possible. It's more realistic for McCown to get axed, but the team would probably try to trade him first as well.
Even kids are on Rodgers caseSaturday 8/9, 10:39 AM CT
Here in fantasy sports land, we care far more about the numbers players produced than the numbers on their jerseys. But that is certainly not true in the case of Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who is taking a lot of heat from fans, including being cursed at by children, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. I'm driving up to the (parking lot) gate and punching in my punch code and somebody says ‘F.U.' to me. That kind of bothers me. Or when a little kid is yelling swear words at me. That kind of gets to me. The boos, they expect a high level of play and they miss Brett Favre. I understand that. But the ‘F.U.' and the little kids saying swear words to me, I don't understand that," Rodgers said.

Our View: Well that's classy. Rodgers doesn't deserve the heat he is taking, as he had nothing to do with the Brett Favre - Green Bay breakup. He was simply drafted by the team. That said, he is a good backup in fantasy terms and has the potential to be more.
Avery will sit out gameSaturday 8/9, 10:25 AM CT
Rams rookie wide receiver Donnie Avery will sit out the team's preseason game tonight against Tennessee as he continues to recover from a stress fracture in his pelvis, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: A second-round pick in the draft, Avery is expected to contribute, but has been sidelined with this pelvic injury. Fantasy players should not count on him, at least not right now. Rookie wide outs traditionally struggle, and he just has not seen enough practice time to even get on the field.
Rodgers-Cromartie draws praiseSaturday 8/9, 10:10 AM CT
Cardinals first-round draft pick, cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, was praised by head coach Ken Whisenhunt after the team's first preseason game, according to the Arizona Republic. "You don't have a conception of what his speed is like until you see him in an NFL game against NFL players," Whisenhunt said.

Our View: Sounds like Rodgers-Cromartie is off to a blistering start. No doubt he has speed, but he will be tested on his cover skills against starting NFL players eventually, and that will speak volumes more on his progress.
Boldin will return to practiceSaturday 8/9, 9:59 AM CT
After missing a large portion of training camp and the team's first preseason game, Cardinals wide out Anquan Boldin should be healthy enough to return to practice, reports the Arizona Republic.

Our View: Good news for fantasy owners who are depending on Boldin to put up his usual stellar numbers.
Curry bothered by hamstringSaturday 8/9, 9:53 AM CT
Raiders receiver Ronald Curry was planning to play in the team's game against San Francisco, but did not when he couldn't get his leg to feel right during warmups, according to the Sacramento Bee.

Our View: Curry should be okay eventually, as the injury is not considered serious, and he is a quality depth player at WR for fantasy squads.
Steelers interested in LeftwichSaturday 8/9, 9:45 AM CT
The Pittsburgh Steelers are bringing in quarterback Byron Leftwich for a workout, and he may be signed today, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: With Charlie Batch having suffered a broken collarbone, the Steelers have no veteran backup, making signing a backup a priority.
49ers interestd in SpikesSaturday 8/9, 8:17 AM CT
The San Francisco 49ers could be interested in signing free agent linebacker Takeo Spikes, according to Sporting News Today.

Our View: The Philadelphia Eagles released Spikes in March, and he has yet to sign with a team. He had 86 tackles last season, and the 49ers could be a nice option for him with their young linebacking corps.
Hackett will not play in gameSaturday 8/9, 8:09 AM CT
Panthers wide receiver D.J. Hackett will sit out tonight's preseason game against the Colts due to a toe injury, according to Sporting News Today.

Our View: Hackett was frequently injured during his days in Seattle, and he continues that trend in Carolina. He could wind up as a solid fantasy receiver, but keep his notorious injury history in mind before drafting him.
Seymour dominatingSaturday 8/9, 8:03 AM CT
Richard Seymour is as healthy as he has been in a long time, and he has been performing extremely well for New England, according to Sporting News Today.

Our View: Seymour playing at a high level will please fantasy owners who have the New England defense on their squads. He brings the potential to not only put up sack totals himself, but to clear the way for others to get sacks by engulfing offensive lineman.
Holland to return soonSaturday 8/9, 7:57 AM CT
Montrae Holland will finally be allowed to practice with the team on Monday, according to Sporting News Today. Holland had been working alone on conditioning after reporting to camp overweight. Holland was Denver's starter at right guard a season ago.

Our View: Holland will still be allowed to fight for the starting job at right guard, but he's clearly in Mike Shanahan's doghouse already.
Burgess breaks wristSaturday 8/9, 7:47 AM CT
Linebacker Prescott Burgess broke his left wrist and will have to undergo surgery, according to Sporting News Today.

Our View: No word on how long Burgess will be out. He was a backup, so his impact on Baltimore's defensive unit for fantasy purposes is minimal.
