Hawkins goes for 70 yards, TDFriday 8/15, 11:12 PM CT
Lavelle Hawkins caught a 51-yard TD pass and added another 19-yard catch in the Titans' win over the Raiders Friday.

Our View: The fourth-round pick is pretty far down on the depth chart right now, but it's not like he has any studs that he has to leap-frog. He's at least worth keeping an eye on over the final two preseason tilts.
White solid, but outdone by JohnsonFriday 8/15, 11:08 PM CT
LenDale White had a solid showing Friday, collecting 39 yards on eight carries while adding a one-yard catch.

Our View: White was shown up again by rookie Chris Johnson, however, we still expect the cream puff to garner at least half the carries and most of the goal-line touches this year.
Johnson looks good again in Titans' winFriday 8/15, 11:06 PM CT
Chris Johnson led the Titans with 46 yards on eight carries Friday.

Our View: Johnson now has 123 yards on 14 carries in two preseason games. He could split the carries pretty evenly with LenDale White, though White should get the ball at the stripe.
Walker held catchless, has ugly dropFriday 8/15, 11:02 PM CT
Javon Walker was held catchless Friday and had a poor drop in the red zone in the loss to Tennessee.

Our View: Walker, at best, is worth a late-round pick in 10- and 12-team leagues.
Miller leads Raiders receiversFriday 8/15, 11:00 PM CT
Zach Miller was the star of the night for the Raiders Friday, catching four passes for 48 yards, which including a terrific 10-yard touchdown grab.

Our View: The touchdown pass came from JaMarcus Russell, who has developed a nice rapport with Miller in his brief work with him.
Bush solid again for RaidersFriday 8/15, 10:58 PM CT
Michael Bush was the "workhorse" for the Raiders Friday, gaining 59 yards on 14 carries in a loss to Tennessee.

Our View: Two straight solid preseason outings for Bush. He might be the only No. 3 running back in the league that's worth a flyer in fantasy leagues.
McFadden rushes for 44 yardsFriday 8/15, 10:56 PM CT
Darren McFadden came on after Justin Fargas and had a nice game Friday, picking up 44 yards on six carries while adding a five-yard reception.

Our View: McFadden looked better than both Fargas and Michael Bush, showing everyone why he is the most explosive rookie this year.
Russell solid in loss to TitansFriday 8/15, 10:54 PM CT
The Raiders babied JaMarcus Russell Friday, but the former first overall pick had a solid game, completing 10-of-17 passes for 75 yards and a touchdown.

Our View: We have to think Lane Kiffin will loosen the reins eventually, but for now this may be the best way to utilize Russell, who has had a poor training camp.
Phillips having tremendous campFriday 8/15, 6:53 PM CT
If the Newark Star-Ledger's Mike Garafolo knows what he's talking about, then you should expect big things from rookie Kenny Phillips this year. Garafolo says: "The kid is awesome. How he dropped to No. 31 in the draft I'll never know."

Our View: It's looking like Phillips has a good shot to start in Week 1, and he could be a sleeper in IDP leagues.
Williamson misses week of practiceFriday 8/15, 6:29 PM CT
Troy Williamson is the latest in a long line of injured Jaguars receivers. The speedy wideout has missed the entire week of practice with groin and hip flexor problems, according to the AP.

Our View: At this point there is no reason to think this injury is too major. The Jags really need Williamson to be healthy with Reggie Williams and Jerry Porter sidelined.
Gates doesn't plan on being on PUP listFriday 8/15, 5:55 PM CT
Antonio Gates is still experiencing pain in his surgically repaired toe, but he has no intention of still being on the PUP list once the season has begun, according to the North County Times. "I refuse to be on that thing, man," Gates said. "I wouldn't imagine they would put me on it, based on the running I've been doing and the cutting I've been doing. I can feel some changes, but whether or not I can do it to the ability I need to (is the question). It looks OK, but the way it feels is the problem."

Our View: It is very unlikely Gates will miss the first six weeks, but we wouldn't be surprised at all if he isn't that effective in the early going.
Hart likely has roster spot locked upFriday 8/15, 5:50 PM CT
Not surprisingly, Mike Hart has likely locked up a roster spot already with the Colts, according to the Indianapolis Star.

Our View: It will likely come down to Kenton Keith, Clifton Dawson, or Chad Simpson for the No. 4 spot behind Joseph Addai and Dominic Rhodes.
Session expected to start on the strong sideFriday 8/15, 5:46 PM CT
Clint Session is expected to start at strong-side linebacker while Tyjuan Hagler is out, according to the Indianapolis Star.

Our View: It's possible Session could keep the job even after Hagler comes back around midseason.
Tyree likely to begin year on PUP listFriday 8/15, 5:41 PM CT
Super Bowl hero David Tyree admitted Friday that he could begin the year on the PUP list, according to the AP. Tyree is recovering from offseason knee surgery. "I am much closer and much stronger," said Tyree. "I can do breaks and in cuts. The consistency and endurance are still not where they have to be."

Our View: It's great that Tyree came up big in the Super Bowl, but his value comes on special teams.
Manuel passes Abdullah Friday 8/15, 3:15 PM CT
Marquand Manuel has reportedly passed Hamza Abdullah on the Broncos' depth chart as the starting strong safety, according to the Rocky Mountain News. Abdullah has been unable to practice due to a groin injury, but defensive coordinator Bob Slowik said, "It has nothing to do with Hamza but how Marquand's playing. He's had a great camp. He's really professional. He prepares in the class room and works hard out here. He's coachable and he's been performing well both in practice and in the game last week."

Our View: Manuel could generate favorable tackling totals as the starting strong safety but is not a safe fantasy prospect, as Abdullah can unseat him at some point this season once he gets healthy.
Jackson learning quickly Friday 8/15, 2:47 PM CT
Rookie receiver DeSean Jackson is learning quickly with the Eagles, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. He continues to gain coach Andy Reid's confidence, and is looking more likely to play a solid role in the Eagles' passing attack this season, as opposed to just serving as a return man on special teams. He has looked good in the preseason, as he hauled in seven catches for 71 yards against the Panthers, and five catches for 51 yards against the Steelers. Jackson said, "Coach Marty Mornhinweg and coach Reid have a lot of things in the offense for me. They have a lot of confidence in me and are giving me an opportunity to help this team out. I feel I'm better from the last game to this game. Coming off the ball. Running my routes."

Our View: Jackson looks to be a good sleeper candidate for 2008, when you consider that Reggie Brown has been plagued by injuries throughout training camp and the fact that Donovan McNabb could be headed for a bounce back season as a top-8 quarterback.
Suggs expected to report Sunday Friday 8/15, 2:37 PM CT
John Clayton of ESPN indicates that Terrell Suggs will report to the Ravens Sunday and sign his one-year tender, which will be for $8.5 million.

Our View: Suggs has agreed to play this season at the $8.5 million tender and won't ask for any condition in the deal that will prevent the Ravens from franchising him next season. He is scheduled to be a free agent after the season. Suggs is to practice at the team facility next week and play about 15 snaps against the Rams in the third preseason game, putting him on pace to be ready for Week 1.
Beisel returns to practice Friday 8/15, 2:19 PM CT
Monty Beisel has returned to practice, according to the East Valley Tribune. He has been dealing with back problems.

Our View: The 30-year-old vet is less likely to make the Cardinals following the acquisition of Brandon Moore.
Manningham not close Friday 8/15, 2:14 PM CT
The NY Post indicates that rookie receiver Mario Manningham is not close to returning to practice and is aggravating coach Tom Coughlin. When Coughlin was asked as to when Manningham may return he said, "Just speculation. It's not worth even talking about."

Our View: Manningham is not needed to contribute this season as the club is well-stocked at receiver, meaning he could spend his rookie campaign on the IR if he doesn't practice and make some noise soon.
Stokes placed on IR Friday 8/15, 2:09 PM CT
Barry Stokes has been placed on the IR, hence ending his 2008 campaign, according to the Boston Globe. He was battling a back ailment.

Our View: The 34-year-old vet was viewed as a longshot to make the final roster as a backup offensive lineman.
Williams still not 100 percent Friday 8/15, 2:05 PM CT
Roydell Williams has been activated from the PUP list but his surgically repaired ankle is still not 100 percent, according to the Nashville City Paper. Coach Jeff Fisher said, "We’re going to try to warm him up and see how he is. He knows what to do, but we’re going on how he feels."

Our View: He is not going to play Friday against the Raiders. Williams will test his sore ankle in warm-ups but will not be able to participate in the game. He is listed as day-to-day.
Landry will miss Saturday's exhibition Friday 8/15, 1:46 PM CT
LaRon Landry will miss Saturday's exhibition game against the Jets due to his ailing hamstring, according to the Washington Post. Coach Jim Zorn said, "We're going to leave LaRon at home to continue to get treatment. We are just trying to continue to get him ready. He's starting to come around, just not quite as fast as we hoped."

Our View: He missed the first two preseason games, and his hamstring tightens when he runs full speed. Zorn still believes he will be fine for the start of the season. Hopefully he will get some work in soon, preferably in the August 23rd contest against Carolina.
Thomas to make debut Saturday Friday 8/15, 1:41 PM CT
Devin Thomas, who is recovering from a strained hamstring, is expected to make his preseason debut Saturday against the Jets, according to the Washington Post.

Our View: The rookie is expected to play a lot in the game, and is further along in his development than Malcolm Kelly, who remains sidelined while recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery. If Thomas performs well against the Jets, it will help in his bid to earn a solid role early in the season.
Galloway yet to participate Friday 8/15, 1:36 PM CT
The Buccaneers finished training camp and Joey Galloway did not participate in one team drill or practice, according to the Tampa Tribune. He continues to be hindered by his sore groin.

Our View: Galloway would rank as a top-20 fantasy receiver if healthy, but he should be drafted with caution. He could be ineffective early in the season.
Finnegan inks new deal Friday 8/15, 1:29 PM CT
Cortland Finnegan has inked a new four-year deal with the Titans worth just over $17 million, according to the Tennessean. He also gets a $6 million signing bonus.

Our View: Finnegan is now locked up through the 2011 season, and heads into the 2008 campaign as a starting cornerback. Finnegan is among the best cornerbacks at defending the run in the NFL, evidenced by his 95 tackles (79 solo) in 2007. He is a solid choice as a defensive back in IDP leagues.
McCown leading race for No. 2 role Friday 8/15, 12:59 PM CT
Luke McCown is leading the competition over Brian Griese for the primary backup job at quarterback behind starter Jeff Garcia, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Griese has been closing the gap however, and coach Jon Gruden said, "Griese is one of those guys the more you give him, the better he is. He's rare that way."

Our View: The winner of the job should see action this season with Jeff Garcia unlikely to remain intact for a full 16-game slate, but neither contender should hold solid fantasy value.
Williams expected to begin on PUPFriday 8/15, 12:54 PM CT
Cadillac Williams is close to practicing with the team, but is still expected to begin the season on the PUP list, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View: If he is placed on the PUP list, he would be forced to miss the first six games of the season.
Wilford not in jeopardy of getting cut?Friday 8/15, 12:48 PM CT
The Miami Herald does not believe Ernest Wilford is in jeopardy of not making the Dolphins' final roster at receiver. Wilford has lacked focus and concentration through training camp, but the team still feels he is talented enough to make the team.

Our View: Wilford has fallen out of the running for the No. 2 receiver job to Derek Hagan, and is also losing ground to Devone Bess for the slot role, but should fall no further than fourth on the depth chart.
Giants add Huston Friday 8/15, 12:41 PM CT
The Giants have signed placekicker Josh Huston, according to the Star-Ledger.

Our View: Huston will handle kicking duties on Monday against the Browns in place of Lawrence Tynes, who injured his leg earlier this week during practice. The team is uncertain how much time Tynes may need to recover.
Williams to play MLB on pass downsFriday 8/15, 12:30 PM CT
D.J. Williams is going to work at middle linebacker on passing downs, according to the Rocky Mountain News. He will regularly line up on the weakside.

Our View: Williams ranks as a top-25 linebacker for IDP leagues, and this news solidifies his position.
Dunn to be used more as receiver?Friday 8/15, 12:24 PM CT
The St. Petersburg Times suggests that Warrick Dunn will be used more as a receiver than as a rusher this season.

Our View: Dunn is a solid fit for coach Jon Gruden's offense, and could hold favorable value in PPR leagues if he is in fact featured more in the passing game.
Stewart sent to visit doctor Friday 8/15, 12:18 PM CT
Jonathan Stewart is still recovering from his injured toe and has been sent to visit Dr. Robert Anderson, according to the Gaston Gazette. The doctor assured Stewart that he can’t cause any more damage to the ailing toe and that what he’s feeling is a build up of scar tissue. As time goes on and the more he plays, the scar tissue will loosen up and the toe will begin to feel normal.

Our View: Stewart will take things slow at the beginning of the season, but should now have the confidence to run hard and with less hesitancy after visiting the doctor.
Heap out since August 2 Friday 8/15, 12:12 PM CT
Todd Heap has been out since August 2 while recovering from a right calf ailment, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View: Heap is expected to be ready for Week 1, but is missing time to get into rhythm with the Ravens' quarterbacks, namely Troy Smith. Heap has top-5 potential as a fantasy tight end if healthy, but must be accompanied by a solid backup for insurance if you decide to pull him off the board on draft day.
Green waived Friday 8/15, 12:00 PM CT
Justin Green has been waived by the Jets, according to the Bergen Report.

Our View: Green was not going to hold any fantasy value with the Jets while serving as Tony Rochardson's backup at fullback.
Springs would consider move to safetyFriday 8/15, 11:14 AM CT
Shawn Springs would consider moving to free safety in an attempt to extend his career, according to the Washington Times. Springs said, "Rod Woodson went from 12 to 17 years in the league and had 23 more picks. That would be awesome. I think it might be a natural transition. I've got the size for it. It's just about getting back there and getting used to it. It is still a new position."

Our View: Springs has played all 11 years of his career at cornerback, but has been experimenting with playing at safety a little bit in training camp. If he were to eventually start at free safety, Laron Landry would move to strong safety, pushing Reed Doughty out of a starting job.
Blades returns to practice Friday 8/15, 11:09 AM CT
H.B. Blades has returned to practice Thursday, according to the Washington Times. He is recovering from surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee.

Our View: Blades is valuable to the team as he is the top backup at linebacker. He could play a key role if Rocky McIntosh fails to make a favorable comeback from his knee injury. Middle linebacker London Fletcher is 33-years-old as well.
Ellis expected to be space-filler Friday 8/15, 10:41 AM CT
Sedrick Ellis is expected to be a space-filler and occupy blockers following the loss of Hollis Thomas, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Scott Fujita said, "he has a non-stop motor, looks like the kind of guy who'll be a good friend of the linebackers, just by making their job easier by keeping the offensive linemen occupied."

Our View: Ellis excels against the run, but is also explosive enough to disrupt plays in the backfield. As is the case with most defensive tackles, his fantasy value as an IDP prospect will likely be low.
McBride unseats Boone Friday 8/15, 10:35 AM CT
Turk McBride has unseated Alfonso Boone as the Chiefs' starting left defensive end, according to the KC Star.

Our View: McBride is more athletic than Boone and is better suited to play defensive end, but will not be a solid starter. His fantasy impact will be small.
Dorsey to be game-time decision Friday 8/15, 10:09 AM CT
Glenn Dorsey will be a game-time decision for Saturday's game against the Cardinals, according to the KC Star. The rookie is dealing with a sprained knee and coach Herman Edwards said, "We’ll just figure it out in warm-ups whether he can go, and he probably can go. But we’ll be selective with him."

Our View: If he does play, his appearance will be brief. His knee injury has improved favorably.
Porter's status unknown Friday 8/15, 9:59 AM CT
Joey Porter's status for Saturday's game against the Jaguars is unknown, according to the Miami Herald. Porter iced his sore back during the closing part of Thursday's practice.

Our View: Porter is going to be relied upon more as a pass rusher with Jason Taylor departed to Washington, and the team will remain cautious with him heading up to Week 1. If healthy, he would rank as a No. 3 linebacker for IDP leagues.
Dolphins yet to pick starting RB Friday 8/15, 9:55 AM CT
Coach Tony Sparano is yet to choose his starting running back between Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams, according to the Miami Herald. He has a good understanding as to what both backs can accomplish in games, but has not determined which is better suited to be the starter. Sparano said, "Who comes into the game warm or who needs to start the game to be warm is kind of an issue. Last week, Ronnie started the game, we got him touches early in the game, but there's Ricky kind of chomping at the bit to get in, and I wasn't sure how he would enter."

Our View: Sparano liked Williams' energy when he relieved Brown. He compares the situation to what the Cowboys' staff dealt with between Julius Jones and Marion Barber.
Dockett still nursing injury Friday 8/15, 9:50 AM CT
Darnell Dockett will be sidelined for at least a week as he continues to nurse his mild pectoral strain, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View: That means he will not play Saturday against the Chiefs. He cannot afford to miss much time, as he has rookies Calais Campbell and Kenny Iwebema pushing for playing time.
Moore excited to join Cardinals Friday 8/15, 9:46 AM CT
Brandon Moore is excited to be a member of the Cardinals, according to the Arizona Republic. He said, "To be let go by the 49ers, it was very surprising, but it's part of the business and you've got to bounce back. I'm excited to be a Cardinal because this is a program on the rise with a tremendous amount of talent and tremendous ability to win."

Our View: Moore will provide solid depth as a backup linebacker in Arizona, but does not merit fantasy interest. He is the younger brother of former Cardinals' receiver Rob Moore.
Shockey dealing with hamstring injuryFriday 8/15, 9:35 AM CT
Jeremy Shockey did not participate in Thursday's scrimmage against the Texans as he is dealing with a hamstring injury, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View: He isn't expected to play Saturday against Houston. He is also trying to bounce back from a broken left leg this season. If healthy, Shockey would rank as a No. 1 fantasy tight end in the Saints' explosive offense.
Andrews expected to return Saturday Friday 8/15, 9:31 AM CT
Shawn Andrews, who is dealing with depression, is expected to return to practice Saturday, according to the PhillyBurbs.com. Andrews is ready to resume football activities.

Our View: The Pro Bowl guard should be ready to play next Friday against the Patriots.
Jennings not likely to play Saturday Friday 8/15, 9:11 AM CT
Greg Jennings will not likely play Saturday against the 49ers, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. He is nursing a knee injury.

Our View: The ailment is not believed to be serious, but will continue to be monitored closely. As of now, he should be drafted anong the top-20 fantasy receivers.
Mason injured Friday 8/15, 8:58 AM CT
Derrick Mason landed on his right knee while running a route against cornerback Corey Ivy and stayed down on the turf for a few minutes during practice, according to the Carroll County Times.

Our View: He limped off the field and sat out the remainder of practice with his knee iced and wrapped, but said he will be fine and was able to put weight on his leg.
Ravens bring back Phillips Friday 8/15, 8:55 AM CT
Anwar Phillips has been brough back to the Ravens after the team released him at the beginning of the month, according to the Carroll County Times. He said, "I didn’t know if I would be back."

Our View: Phillips will not hold any fantasy value if he makes the final roster.
Smith comments on Hester Friday 8/15, 8:45 AM CT
Coach Lovie Smith stated that questions regarding Devin Hester as a receiver have been answered, according to the Daily Herald. Smith said, "Coming into camp we talked about him as a returner that a lot of people thought could play receiver. Now, I think it's safe to say that he's a receiver. He's doing all the things that we've asked him to do. I still make the same statement: I think he can be a 1- or 2-type receiver in the league. He's dangerous when he has his hands on the football, and we're excited about getting his hands on the ball in a lot of different ways."

Our View: Hester could be the most dangerous player in the league in the open field, but his potential to post solid numbers as a receiver will be compromised by the Bears' poor options at quarterback.
Evans performs well vs. Steelers Friday 8/15, 8:31 AM CT
Lee Evans performed well in Thursday's exhibition against the Steelers, with three receptions for a team-high 55 yards.

Our View: Evans has potential to be an elite fantasy receiver. The Bills just need to find consistency at quarterback. Speaking of that, Trent Edwards completed 9-of-11 passes for 104 yards with two scores (both to Robert Royal).
Holmes has strong outing Friday 8/15, 8:26 AM CT
Santonio Holmes had a strong outing against the Bills, as he broke loose for a 40-yard touchdown launched from the arm of Ben Roethlisberger, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He finished the exhibition with two receptions for 53 yards and one score.

Our View: Holmes ranks as a top-15 fantasy receiver, and is off to a solid start in the preseason.
Dixon shows off legs Friday 8/15, 8:21 AM CT
Dennis Dixon showed off his legs in preseason action against the Bills, as he rushed 47 yards for a touchdown, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The quarterback ran twice for 54 yards and completed 6-of-15 passes for 79 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions.

Our View: Dixon is competing for the No. 3 role at quarterback, and will not see the field unless injuries plague the team at the position.
Dekker injured Friday 8/15, 8:16 AM CT
Jon Dekker sprained his right knee in preseason action against the Bills, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: Dekker was competing for the No. 3 role at tight end. The team is yet to determine the severity of the injury.
Brown injures hamstring Friday 8/15, 7:58 AM CT
Reggie Brown injured his hamstring in Thursday's exhibition game against Carolina, according to the PhillyBurbs.com. He was already nursing tendinitis in his Achilles.

Our View: He limped off the field after injuring his hamstring and did not return. Brown has potential to be a top-30 fantasy receiver, but it looks like injuries could hinder expectations.
McAllister to play vs. Texans Friday 8/15, 7:53 AM CT
Deuce McAllister's appearance Saturday against the Texans will be highly anticipated, according to the Houston Chronicle. He missed almost all of last season after suffering a torn ACL in his left knee, and coach Sean Payton said, "He’s coming off a serious knee injury, and getting him back and seeing him get used to the contact again is the No. 1 thing. The plan is to play him, and we’ll see where he is." Reggie Bush added, "He’s getting stronger. Anytime you have an injury like that, it’s tough to come back, and you don’t want to rush yourself too quick. He’s looking good right now."

Our View: Deuce looks to be ready for the start of the regular season. He may not rack up strong rushing totals, especially if Pierre Thomas is in the mix, but could still collect a solid number of touchdowns in the Saints' dynamic offense.
Horn returns to practice Friday 8/15, 7:39 AM CT
Joe Horn returned to practice Thursday following a bout with a hamstring ailment, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Coach Mike Smith said, "He’s been working with the trainers and running some routes, almost full speed. We got him some snaps. So we’ll get an opportunity to see what he can do this week."

Our View: Horn wants to be traded, as he is only serving as insurance in Atlanta in case one of their young receivers gets hurt. He could improve his trade value with a solid showing in the preseason.
Peterson to have more receptions Friday 8/15, 7:30 AM CT
Vikings' O.C. Darrell Bevell stated that he expects Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor to have less rushing attempts this season and more pass receptions, according to the Pioneer Press. The Vikings offense is looking to be more balanced this season, and Bevell added that he feels the team has two No. 1 backs with Peterson and Taylor.

Our View: Peterson ranks No. 2 among fantasy backs behind only LaDainian Tomlinson, and his scoring in PPR leagues looks to increase based on this news. Less carries could also keep him healthier over the stretch run of the season, when fantasy owners need him the most.
Darling claims No. 2 role Friday 8/15, 7:00 AM CT
Devard Darling has claimed the No. 2 role at wide receiver, according to the KC Star.

Our View: Darling did not dazzle in training camp and gets the job due to his experience. The Chiefs have some promising young receivers, like Will Franklin, but none have performed consistently.
Allen sparks brawlFriday 8/15, 12:00 AM CT
Miami cornerback Will Allen sparked a brawl during Dolphins practice by throwing a forearm into teammate David Kircus, who was playing receiver, and then pouncing on him, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Soon, some 30 teammates were taking part. "It's not smart. It's not something that I condone at all," Miami head coach Tony Sparano said.

Our View: Camp fights are not unusual at this time of the year, but nobody wants to see a repeat of what happened between Steve Smith and Ken Lucas, so coaches understandably want no part of it.
